As soon as I walked in, I was greeted with a smile. My order was long & complicated and the lady at the counter was patient kind and very good at making sure what I wanted was correct. I was very excited to go as there was a Sam's southern eatery on 34th Street in Lubbock & the dry rub Buffalo wings were so amazing, therefore it was unexpected to have regular fried wings with sauce on the side, but it was still up to par. The meal was the hot comfort food you need in life, it's filling & there will definitely have leftovers. The prices are very reasonable. I have been wanting to try this place so today I did. They have a larger than expected dining room. It was clean and well maintained. I ordered the Shrimp Po-Boy with Hush Puppies. The po-boy was excellent! I even got an extra jumbo shrimp in my basket. The hush puppies were of the jalapeño variety. They were equally as good as the sandwich. Service was fast and accurate. This is a casual restaurant, but the food and service belie that designation. First, the food is excellent. In fact, after finishing dinner, we ordered another okra/hushpuppy appetizer. So tasty. Second, the staff acted like we were in a more formal setting; for example, patiently describing dishes, options, portions. We did say that this was our first visit and there wasn't a line, so that might explain in part how they could be so attentive. For example, the young man who took our order came to the table to chat with us during the meal. We are staying in Brownwood only a few more days, but we well bo back before we leave. Its more fast food than sit down dining. I think we were expecting the latter, but we were short on time, so fast food won out. Mostly fried items (fish, shrimp and chicken), but you could get much of it grilled as well. I would have expected gumbo to be on the menu, but alas it wasn't. We had fried green tomatoes and fried pickles as starters. Not a fan of either usually, but tried a couple pickles. Breading was ultra salty for my likes, but the flavor of the pickle was good. Ranch for dipping was also pretty good. Main orders came out soon thereafter. A couple of the red beans and rice sides were nearly spilled - one was - so they should rethink the serving container. Cole slaw was in a covered container, but the red beans were in an uncovered styrofoam bowl so depending on how you handed it off, it was an accident waiting to happen. The shrimp in my 2 fish and 6 shrimp combo were quite large. Provided two types of dipping sauces - red cocktail and a remoulade. Breading was similar to the appetizers and the fish, but slightly different. Definitely crunchier. The shrimp were very good. The fish - maybe tilapia - was a bit dry and the breading was definitely the same used on the appetizers. It was a bit salty for my liking, but still good. Pricing wasn't bad. Someone else had the shrimp poboy and commented how my shrimp still had the tails on - which I would have expected - but the shrimp in her poboy had been removed - which she was thankful for. Hush puppies were okay. Nothing to write home about, but fries looked very good. This seemed to be a former Wendy's so don't expect any fancy dining experience. Bring your own fork or power through the plasticware, but you won't want to leave a bite on your plate! The Cajun category is what caught my husband's attention, though I'm not EXACTLY sure what they consider Cajun on their menu unless it's the Po Boys. All that changed, however, when we walked in and saw the special - we were hooked on the Chicken Shish Kabob with 4 Grilled Shrimp and 2 sides. My palette isn't trained to know what they seasoned the chicken with, but it was a smidge tangy, a lot savory, and NOT dry - SO GOOD! The shrimp was super - not too small and seasoned well - as were the grilled onions and bell peppers, all perfectly tender yet crisp. The green beans were GREAT - a little peppery, buttery, and tasteful - and the hush puppies were fried fantastically, not overdone, perfect bite size, and with just the right hint of spice. I also liked that not EVERYTHING was fried; actually, it was the opposite. My only complaint, and it's minimal enough that I buried this bit for a reason, is that they served plasticware which made it a challenge to fork the chicken, onion, and green beans. The food at Sam's is absolutely delicious! At this point, we've had the crab cakes, fish, chicken, shrimp, and po boys, as well as most sides, and everything has been top-notch. The crab cakes are actually some of the best I've had in Texas--crispy-fried on the outside and tender and flavorful inside. The chicken is also moist, with good flavor and a light breading (I actually prefer their chicken to some of the other local chain competitors). As for sides, they've all complimented the meals nicely, but the beans and rice is a true 10/10. If you're in the area, give Sam's a try! Super close to Walmart and Home Depot but I've never seen the restaurant super crowded. Glenda is on a health kick, and I'm playing along to be nice. We ordered grilled instead of fried. Catfish, shrimp and oysters, come to pappa! Everything was delicious. Their house made tarter sauce is my favorite. At Sam's, you always get more than you order, and that means leftovers! For a chain, they have really good food. The sides can be so-so, but that's ok. Just being honest. I have had many folks steering me in direction of Sam's by singing it's praises, much akin to the old church hymns I'm fond of on Sunday mornings. Each contained equal amounts of fervor and devotion. The establishment was nice and clean. The menu was straightforward and easy to read. I ordered the fried shrimp and a soda. Food came out hot and fast. Overall, it was good. I don't know if the cocktail sauce is homemade, but it didn't taste like it came from a tub. I'm weird like that. I have a sensitivity to processed seafood condiments. The shrimp were very fresh and the coating perfectly fried and crispy. A little bland for my taste, but definitely skillfully prepared. I do, however, wish the seasoning in the breading was more pronounced or had maybe even had some heat. Could be my taster is skewed from all these years of TexMex, but it's far too late to undo.
