Nice quiet spot right by César Chávez -- kind of hard to see but worth stopping in. I was glad I came and my drink was exactly what I wanted. Delish.

House handmade margarita & The Double Entendre

The margarita is hand made not from a machine. Double Entendre is delicious. We are from Kansas City & the main places on yelp have been okay. But this place is a great local place everyone should stop at.

Came in on my birthday with my BF just to get away from my family after a birthday lunch. Walked in and immediately felt some cool vibes going on here. I love how quaint and home-y Lowcountry feels. The bar is super cool and dark looking - I love it. There is a variety of craft cocktails you can choose from here so take your pick or default to the house sangria. Back patio is pretty awesome but small so if you have a big party it may be better for you to be inside where you can seat 6-8 people in the room right by the restroom. The front room was spacious yet romantic with the mantel and the pews off against the wall. Cool art! I thought I saw a Daniel Johnston piece but I wasn't 100% sure. Best thing about Lowcountry? The view of the Tower of the Americas from their front patio. Off in the distance can you marvel at a 1968 World Fair structure that is amazingly still standing and operating in San Antonio. Lowcountry - you da best! Also side note - I heard that many traveling bands and local bands come play here at Lowcountry. Recently I heard a gig advertised on Austin radio (KUTX) for a show at Lowcountry that should not be missed. Safe to say that their a lowkey Lowcountry music venue too. I am a fan.

This hole-in-the-wall bar is the newest addition to Southtown's coolest speakeasy-type bars. Lowcountry is a tiny converted home, consisting of about three rooms, so things can either be insanely packed, or completely dead. It's hard to find it at a comfortable number of people. But it is a good place to go to hear some live music. The old house gives acoustics unlike any other venue in town. The place is so small, that if you need to squeeze by to go to the restroom, or get another beer, you're going to have to walk through the middle of the band. In fact, if you want to dance, you'll probably be grinding at least one member of the band. The drinks are delicious and imaginative. They've got the regular beers, as well as a few really great craft beers. Beer is cheap, $3 for Lone Star, which goes even cheaper during HH. They offer champagne for $3/glass all day, every day. Not too shabby! The bartenders are great, incredibly friendly and helpful. They are knowledgeable about their drinks, and want to make sure that they get it right. The decor is interesting. It seems like they didn't change much since this was an old house off of Durango Street. There's a piece of art with the coordinates 29N 33W, or something to that effect. If you look it up, it's off the coast of S. Carolina. I have no idea what that means. There's a front, and a back patio area, where things get a bit less cramped. This place is not ADA compliant. They have a handicapped elevator in the back, but it seemed inoperable and covered with empty beer cans. Granted, most of those beer cans were mine. There are stairs in the front and the back, so it could pose a problem.

I want to start out by saying this bar isn't for everyone. Not everybody is going to like it, it is smaller than most, and if you have a goo band playing it'll be hard to find a seat inside. The patio however is spacious, and the drinks are so, so, good. It is a cocktail bar, though they do offer some bottled beers and wine. They have a cocktail menu that is written daily, so it's always changing. while some might be disappointed to find that a drink they liked one day, isn't on the menu the next, I think it's what makes the bar so great. Variety is the spice of life after all! This really is your friendly neighborhood bar, the bartenders are all quite experienced and are pulled in from bars all over the city. if you frequent the bar scene, and frequent this bar, it will quickly become like cheers, where "everyone will know your name." There is frequently live music playing, either in doors or outside depending on the weather. The ambiance is great, on the patio you can see the Tower of the Americas. The inside perfectly captures a balance between divey and classy, intimate and friendly. It's a really great bar, and while not everyone will like it, they should at least give it a chance.

I live close to here and have in this place a few times and Nikki and Alex have always been awesome. This time I'm here with my brother and cousin from out of town. The drinks are amazing and my brother is happy with his Good Sport.

    Watermelon mule!
    David H.

Drinks were very tasty but the portions for the price are inadequate. Great atmosphere in a great area. The House sangria is flavorful and very refreshing. The watermelon mule was also very tasty. Sweet with the ginger bite, would have been better served in a Cooper mug and a larger quantity with less ice.

Not for everyone. Feels like you've just walked into someone's house. People were not very friendly, which I don't care.

Light dish. Tc double cheese burger: very strong flavors, somewhat sweet. Dense/heavy dish . Our waiter was quick and friendly. The restaurant lighting was dimmed and gave a more intimate /bar environment. I think the ac was broken here because it was very warm and they had fans going on around the room. I think this place would be good for someone who is prefers an American fusion cuisine that leans heavily on the western style dishes. The fusion elements were cute but I still left unsatisfied but still full. We did not park. We walked here right from the river walk. Not a bad place to go if you arrive in town after 9 pm.

Our initial visit to this establishment presented some unique circumstances. On that occasion, the…read morevenue was exceptionally busy, and the sole bartender on duty informed us he was covering for an absent colleague. Despite the staff shortage, we placed a significant order for at least ten drinks. My husband had made a reservation for 6:00 PM. However, at approximately 7:30 PM, after we had already placed our drink order, a staff member informed my husband that our table reservation was only valid for two hours. Concerned about the impending two-hour limit and the delay in receiving our drinks, which had still not arrived by 7:45 PM, we inquired with our bartender about potentially canceling our order. He reassured us, stating that other tables were available should additional patrons arrive. Our subsequent visit, on Saturday, July 25, 2026, was solely with my husband. We arrived punctually, approximately five minutes before our 7:30 PM reservation. A female bartender directed us to a small, two-person table, despite the presence of two larger, seemingly more comfortable, unoccupied tables nearby. While initially assuming these larger tables might be reserved for a bigger party, the selection felt somewhat restrictive given the availability. Our seating unfortunately placed us adjacent to another patron who was using an additional chair to prop up her footwear, which contributed to an unpleasant atmosphere. The bartender then approached our table and asked if it was our first time, to which we replied it was not. She then asked if we knew what we wanted to order. We requested a brief moment to review the menu. However, we then waited for approximately fifteen minutes for her to return. Eventually, my husband had to actively call her over to place our order. Our initial drinks arrived after another ten to fifteen minutes. Subsequently, my husband attempted to catch the bartender's attention to order another round and request water. However, she was engaged in a lengthy conversation, estimated at ten minutes, with the neighboring patron and proceeded to walk past our table without acknowledging us. This extended period of being overlooked led to considerable frustration for my husband, who then felt compelled to approach the main bar directly to place our order and obtain water from a different bartender. It was only after this that the initial female bartender finally approached our table, asking if we needed anything. Considering the relatively small size of the establishment and the fact that there were only three occupied tables at the time, the level of inattentive and delayed service was particularly disappointing and, frankly, perplexing.

Their Steak Friday specials are excellent, and I'm pretty sure the steaks are cooked sous vide, which makes them consistently tender. The oysters are also a standout at $1.50 during happy hour. It can get a little loud when the place fills up, but overall it's a very comfortable spot to enjoy drinks. They validate two hours of parking at the Rand Garage behind the bar, but be aware that the validation is exactly two hours. We asked for someone to clean a table for our party and waited quite a while before anyone came over. My party even asked if we could just clean it ourselves. When a staff member finally came over, she didn't seem happy about having to do it. She didn't greet us or say a word. She quickly sprayed the table, wiped it down, and flopped the food around with the rag instead of actually cleaning it. She didn't bother to pick up or sweep the food and crumbs off the floor either. I had already ordered food and drinks for my party, expecting the table would be cleaned quickly. We ordered two alcoholic drinks and two soda-based drinks, but the sodas were flat. The food came out one plate at a time, with the quicker dishes served first while the rest of our party waited. We didn't want to start eating until everyone had their food. Food was decent. We had an event to attend at the Majestic and didn't have enough time to go somewhere else, so we stayed. We've eaten here several times before and always had good service, which is why we chose to come back. I haven't been to a restaurant in a long time where the staff dragged their feet this much just clearing tables for the next guests. You're in a busy downtown area with venues and events nearby bringing in customers. Keeping tables clean and turning them over promptly should be a priority. This visit was a huge disappointment, and we won't be back.

Drinks were AMAZING! Bartender Rob made the best Negroni I've ever had. I asked him to use whatever gin he thought best--result was an artistic smooooooth full-bodied drink. Told him when I was done I'd lick the glass if it wasn't considered so uncouth for a 'mature' lady like myself to do so Hubby's Buffalo Trace bourbon old fashioned was also outstanding. Rob was the bartender last night who did such a great job, and his work was even better tonight. We highly recommend The EsquireTavern for excellent cocktails. We love the long wood bar and high copper ceiling upstairs, but love the intimate speakeasy atmosphere downstairs even more. We'll definitely be back every time we're in San Antonio! First review, Friday night: Drinks were great (Manhattan and Bourbon Old Fashioned). REAL drinks, no complaints at all about those. And the bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Those aspects of the Esquire get 5+ stars from us. But the appetizers were not good, close to inedible. It was about 8:30pm or so, so maybe they were getting ready to close out the kitchen but the chalupitas with chicken tasted like rubber, and no flavor at all. The seafood platter had something in it that was breading with shell inside, but no meat of any kind. We couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. The shrimp was good and the fish was good but those other things... We'll always love the drinks, the long wooden bar, and the ambiance at the Esquire Tavern, but we'll eat somewhere else and come here for before or after dinner drinks. (See update above to this review for when we returned the next night for after dinner drinks.)
