My wife and I had an appointment in Harvard, MA and wanted to find a nice place to eat. This place was well reviewed on Yelp so we decided to try it. We were very surprised and delighted by the uniform excellence of everything we ordered. The place far exceeded our expectations. Bread bites appetizer was a luscious hot crusty bread which was so satisfying. My wife's seafood and my crusted tuna were both wonderful. A light French Chardonnay superlative. And the Zabaglione dessert was crazy good - an instant favorite. The service and atmosphere left nothing to be desired. What a surprise. We've driven through Ayer before and have commented on how nice the downtown looks, but never knew where to go. Some friends suggested that we all go out to Lucia's and give it a try. Definitely a good move. They have a good selection of Italian dishes, with some house specialties, but not so many that makes you wonder if they can actually cook anything well. Nevertheless, you will spend some time tried to decide what you want. One thing that they do very well are the drinks. My wife had a basil lemon vodka gimlet that was perfect, her friend had a blood orange martini that she said was the perfect amount of sweet. I did a straight up Negroni that tasted all of Italian that it was. My friend had his Cabernet Sauvignon that he felt hit the spot. We all started with the grilled peach and goat cheese salad that tasted just right of summer. Next, all the dinners came out to perfection. My friend had Fra Diavolo that he enjoyed. My wife did the chicken piccatta that had a nice light sauce and wasn't over done. His wife had the house special Pollo Muratore that came with a delicious polenta. My choice was the Aqua Pazza that had lobster, scallops, shrimp, calamari, and mussels in a lemon white wine reduction - the seafood was perfectly done and the pasta was right on al dente - also the amount of pasta was just right, now the gobs and gobs you get at a typical Italian American restaurant. One thing to note is that the entres come with rigatoni pasta, but you can substitute linguine, which I highly recommend for the seafood dishes. To be sure, I will be going back and think that even my extremely picky Italian American mother-in-law will like this place and so will you. read more

Our daughter recommended goind here, so we were excited to try it. Very disappointed. My linguini was good, but drenched in too much saice. And the meatballs . If those were homemade, the chef should be ashamed. My wife's meal was good, she liked it. Our server was very good which definitely helped. Caveat... It was Christmas eve 2012 when we visited and there was a table of 18 or so that was seated not long before us. A table that large in the best of restaurants is a test and in a small place like this it likely through the kitchen off kilter. The staff were gracious and polite but we were left with long periods between visits and courses. I appreciate a leisurely meal and I have no problem with a 2 hour 4/5 course meal as long as everything is orchestrated and moves at an appropriate pace. This evening did not. Once the large table was served things improved. I had the lamb special for the evening and the chops , sauce and presentation were excellent. Another in our party had a veal cutlet and pasta dish. It was very good, the veal was very tender however the plating was a mess making it tough to eat especially for my senior Mom. The veal was presented layered on top of probably too much pasta and vegetable to make the dish attractive. The dish was served in a wide serving bowl and you really had to remove the veal to a side plate to cut it in to edible size pieces. Flavor excellent spoiled by the presentation. Wife had lobster pappardelle . She found the white wine garlic sauce overly sweet and the olives were ripe olives when one might have expected a brined olive. Menu didn't say one way or the other. Chefs choice. Lobster and the pappardelle were excellent. Other than flavor disagreements the dish was well prepared. Food quality and flavor would rate this a 4 star restaurant. However the nearly 50 minute wait between apps/salads and entrees,was excessive, they forgot one app . Presentation was not what it should be on 2 of 3 dishes and I hate Televisions in what is a essentially a fine dining restaurant. No one was at the bar, shut them off. High points, staff, food quality; low points timing and presentation, televisions. I don't live in the area but I have family who do. I will likely visit again and hopefully I will find the service issues were due to the large group and Christmas eve. I will make sure to ask for a table in the corner as far as I can get from the TVs. read more

We had a reservation on 2/26/2022 for 8pm. We reached the restaurant at 7:45. Waited till 8:20pm past and asked if there was any sign of us going to be seated. Unfortunately the wait staff told us that they had no idea when the table would get free as their kitchen was running very late and people were still "lingering" at their table. It was very unfortunate as we had to leave so that we could make other dinner arrangements before other area restaurants would be shutting down. The staff was very unapologetic - maybe we were the only people of color at that place. This place used to be one of our favorite places to eat, but now NO MORE. read more

Got food poisoning here on 8/9/22 from the butternut squash ravioli. Both people who ate the dish got sick! I don't believe the pasta was cooked properly, meaning we ate raw eggs and flour. Lucia's has been a family favorite for many years but I'm not sure if I will return. read more

Loved it here! Quaint little romantic spot. The service is attentive and knowledgeable. Our server gave us a great wine recommendation, and it was delicious. He helped us choose dishes that would suit our tastes. The menu is very classic Italian, but they offer gluten free pasta! As someone with a gluten allergy, it's pretty tough to find Italian places outside of Boston that offer GF alternatives. I got the sciue sciue sauce (never heard of it before, but it was like a puttanesca with large pieces of tomato) and the GF penne. DELISH. My boyfriend and brother got the bolognese sauce and it looked amazing. Tons of meat, and not very saucy. If you prefer a saucier bolognese, I would suggest trying another sauce/dish. While the decor is simple and casual, the food is fresh, authentic, and perfectly cooked. I just wish the portions were bigger! read more

I found this place while on business in Leominster. I had the fettuccine carbonara, the stuffed dates and dessert. I would recommend all three and definitely spring for the fresh pasta. The food was awesome and the service was excellent. My family of four, including 2 kids (13 and 14) went to Lucia's on a Tuesday. We had reservations and were quickly seated by the friendly waitress. She was quick to take our order and provide us with the information we needed. Delivery of the food was a bit slow, but it was well worth the wait. The fresh bread had a nice slightly cheesy taste to it. The Ricotta Arancini was very good. We also got the Salumi E Formaggio. It was good, but nothing special. For the main course, I got the Pollo Muratore, which the menu describes as "award winning". I normally don't order chicken at a restaurant because chicken dishes are usually nothing special. This was probably the best chicken dish I've had in my life. The chicken breast was moist and tender with a tasty crispy skin. The polenta was like none I've ever had. It was fantastic. The other members of my family got Fettuccine Alfredo, Five Cheese Lasagna and a lobster pasta dish. Everyone was very happy with their food. We look forward to returning. read more

Why did I wait so long to try this place? The food was fantastic. I had the salmon special with a flavorful puttanesca I couldn't stop talking about. My boyfriend had the surf and turf with filet mignon and scallops that were cooked to perfection. For dessert we had the cheesecake with raspberries. The food was wonderful and our server was helpful and attentive. The only negative was the restaurant itself, which is very small and a bit noisy. It was clear our server was having trouble hearing us. Also, the tv in the bar takes away from what I assume is supposed to be an upscale eatery. Based on previous reviews we were looking forward to a nice meal but overall the experience was a great disappointment. We were seated in a cute spot by the window, white linen tablecloths set the mood for an upscale experience. We asked for sparkling water but they were out of it. Bread was warm but super salty. I ordered a red wine from Sicily but it was not great . Calamari for appetizer was overly deep fried and super heavy and oily. For entrees we ordered the eggplant parmigiana and the eggplant was also deep fried, mostly batter, hardly any eggplant. Also ordered the lasagne which was tasteless and the cheese was congealed, not sure what was happening there but it was barely edible. We had three plus flies constantly trying to land on our food. The service was ok but overall the staff seemed to be in a constant panic despite the restaurant being only half full. Not sure how this place is managing to pull out so many 4 star reviews other than lack of any other competition in the area. Olive Garden would actually been better. We will not be back. read more

Lucia's might have promise, but they are still definitely working out kinks. My family went: two adults, two kids (6 and 9). Our reservation was for 5:30. By 6:00, the place was totally packed. The server was nice and competent, particularly for around here. For appetizers, we had fried olives (delicious!) and calamari (everyone at the table had a different reaction, ranging from love to meh). Portions were a little small, and as our entrees were taking a while, we ordered another calamari, to prevent the kids from melting down. The bread was really good, as was my glass of Barbera. Then things tanked. By 6:00, we were getting a little antsy, but the server said our food would be right out. At 6:30, our server told us that the chef absolutely promised that we were just three minutes away. At 6:40, with the kids absolutely furious and the adults getting pretty grumpy as well, I talked to a manager, who produced our food about five minutes later. The total wait time was 1:15 for our entrees. Hunger is the finest sauce, but nobody loved the entrees. Everything was a bit bland, even my frutti di mare fra diavolo. The mussels were sandy. I thought the side vegetables were undercooked. Other entrees we had were veal Parmesan (server's recommendation) and rigatoni with meatballs. Food quality was a little below Papa Razzi. But maybe there was some series of kitchen disasters that resulted in this, like they dropped the whole tray of our food and had to start from scratch, and then the dog ate it, so they had to make it again! And so, they had to do a rush job? Something.... At the end, the manager came out and said that our meal was compliments of the chef. That was one of the classiest such maneuvers I've ever seen at a restaurant, and it is the reason I'm giving the place three stars instead of one or two. Everyplace can have an off night, and they were very much aware that they had messed this one up. Thanks to that, we might try again, maybe in another six months, but next time, certainly without he kids. Call it growing pains. I almost never give 5 stars but this restaurant was excellent. We visited for the first time since it opened. We didn't noticed any start up glitches in our visit so maybe the issues mentioned in earlier reviews have been worked out although to be honest it was fairly empty. For appetizers we tried the goat cheese fritters and the fried olives based on reviewer comments. They were interesting. Not sure I would order them a 2nd time but we enjoyed them. The entrées were excellent. I had bolognese on hand-made fettuccine. It was the best I've ever had in a restaurant. I ordered a small side of polenta that was also excellent. My daughter had mushroom ravioli and my wife had a seafood pasta dish that were also excellent. The service was very good. The wine/beer selection is pretty limited. The prices were pretty high for this location in downtown Ayer. A normal meal for 3 adults with drinks was ~$120 before tip. read more

Visiting a new restaurant on its second night might not be the best time to review a restaurant, since they're still working out their kinks. But we'll review again after another visit or two, since we'll have a better sense of the consistency as it settles in to a routine. Lucia's took over the location of the site of Thirty One Main, and we're happy to have a new option at that location. Not much appears to have changed in the decor. The tables are reasonably spaced out and arranged. There is a long bar that runs the length of the restaurant. The door to the kitchen was open, probably for logistical reasons, rather than to give the diners a view of the goings-on. Overall, this place has great potential, and it should live up to that potential given that their other location (in Brookline, NH) is very successful. The prices are indeed a bit on the high side, but the quality of the food, for the most part, justifies these prices, even in edgy Ayer. On the other hand, with prices comparable to 80 Thoreau in Concord, which has an edge on the cuisine, and is vastly more atmospheric, I think some might complain that the cost is too high. Fair enough. Hopefully, over time, they will address the decor, which is basic and lacking in sophistication. But if their focus is on the food, as the owner(?) mentioned to us, perhaps they'll leave things as they are, which would be a disappointment, because there are some things that need immediate attention. Like the door that lets in a blast of cold air every time a patron enters or exits. I'm completely forgiving the under-supply of menus and utensils, the noise level, or the lack of a liquor license, or even the service issues, since they are just getting the rhythm. So let's first talk about the food. We went with a party of six, and were seated at a large round table. The wait person was reasonably good, pleasant, and reasonably knowledgeable about the food and wine. No complaints. She also compensated us for a very long delay between placing our order and its arrival. We ordered a selection of antipasti (appetizers) and insalate, which were all very good. One negative is that two of the salads were *very* small for the cost, in particular, the caesar salad ($7), which was very tiny, although very good. The terra di madre salad (7) was really excellent, and a fair portion size. The lobster gnocchi (14) was outstanding, in a delicious sherry cream sauce. The caprese salad (10) was delicious with house-made mozzarella The entrees range in price from $14 (fettuccini alfredo, very rich, perhaps a bit too much sauce) to $27, with most veal dishes in the low $20s, low to mid $20s for seafood, high teens for chicken, low to mid teens for pastas with sauce. The menu has a LOT of choices, perhaps a few too many? Certainly something for everyone. Vegetarians/vegans will probably either resort to a pasta dish, or choose a combination of appetizers and salads. The wine selection was limited, since they were just getting stocked, but the selections were VERY good and reasonably priced. When they get their liquor license (which they hope they will have in a week or so), they will have cocktails in addition to beer and wine. Things that could stand some improvement: 1. Decor - for the menu pricing, I expect a more comfortable and inspired setting. Perhaps better lighting, and more sophisticated wall decor and flooring. Maybe address the wide-open door to the fluorescent lit kitchen (maybe there were too many accidents with the swinging door?). For the menu pricing, a better atmosphere is expected. 2. Comfort - The front door is a real problem. Our party of six was some distance away from the front door, yet the rush of chilly air when the door opens really made us uncomfortable. This can be corrected by adding a second door between the current door and the street, forming a vestibule. Also, the ambient temperature was at least 5 degrees too chilly. We were all complaining about the cold by the end, and while it was chilly out, it was in the high 40s, I dread to think of what it would be like in the winter. Needs immediate attention. 3. Noise - the acoustics are not optimal. Hard linoleum floors, hard walls and ceilings means lots of noise reverb. As the noise levels rise, people need to speak louder to be heard, creating even more noise. Some sound-absorbing acoustical treatments are needed. This would improve the atmosphere. This restaurant holds promise, and the food has already demonstrated that this will be a great asset to the area, which is greatly lacking in options. I wish them well. Given that they were already doing a bustling business on the second night with no advertising, they will probably do very well with just a few improvements. read more

I've been to Lucia's several times since they first opened- and honestly found it to be a bit or miss kind of place. Last week was a huge hit! The menu seemed a bit smaller, less complicated-making it easier to navigate. We ate outside- inside still was not open to guests- and the ambiance was great! The Lucia's team went out of theres way to spruce up the sidewalk dining- if not for the traffic sounds- you'd think you were indoors. It was lovely. The staff were great and attentive.-and the husband and i loved our entrees- he got a flank steak and lobster stack- i had the eggplant Napoleon. The steak was cooked perfectly- and the lobster was fresh and plentiful- interesting twist to add cranberries. My eggplant was thin and crispy and layered with the right amount of ricotta. The sauce was one of the best I've had- and out meals were quite large- so we got to enjoy again the next day. Looking forward to coming back! read more

Traveling on business to the Devens area, I've dined here six time in the past month. They've had a few issues getting there full liquor license, but they can serve wine and beer. The wine list is solid and I've enjoyed several of the reds offered. The menu is eclectic and somewhat unique. Recently, I had the filet that was the nightly special. Hands down better than the filet I had at GH/Groton. And, as the grandson of a rancher, I know my beef. Other solid dishes I've had are the chicken Muratorre, chicken Milanese, and chicken Marsala. Metropolitan dining in Central Mass, I am always happy to find good quality upscale dining outside of Boston or NYC. Beth, our server, earned 5 stars for top service, great balance of approach, friendliness, and knowing when to give us space. We went at 6pm on Sunday, so I cannot comment on acoustics since we had a nice window seat and there were only two other tables occupied. The bread basket and herbs/olive oil was delicious. My husband inquired as to the origin of the olive oil, and Beth informed us that it is only available commercially, and hails from a small vendor in Italy. For appetizers, my husband and I shared the Baked pancetta wrapped dates stuffed with goat cheese served over crispy prosciutto risotto. My general comment is that I needed to smoke a cigarette after that one, if you get my drift. We also had a lovely salad special with mixed greens, goat cheese, candied pecans and strawberries which was delicate. I had the Pinot Grigio, there was not a large "by the glass" wine list, just about one of every choice. The wine was fantastic.. For dinner, I ordered the Tenderloin tips & jumbo scallop's sautéed with roasted wild mushrooms & peppercorn brandy demi glace served with garlic mashed potatoes. It was a little more comfort-foody than I would have preferred at the moment, too much peppercorn yet still tasty. The scallops in the dish were excellent. My husband ordered the triple butter cream Alfredo with sautéed Maine lobster & shrimp tossed with fresh fettuccini pasta. The dish was excellent, the homemade pasta definitely stands out. Both our meals were very rich. For dessert we ordered one vanilla and one chocolate gelato, mine was free for my birthday which is a nice bonus for a restaurant to offer. They were much larger portions than we expected - I was thinking one scoop, we each got three. Again, rich and decadent. Splitting a dessert would have been enough. We both felt like Thanksgiving afterwards, next time we will probably split some meals. The elapsed time of the dining experience was 2 hours, though we ate and ordered at a very relaxed pace. I've seen several reviews of people waiting for entrees, but am curious as to what is 'too long'. Lucia's is a place you expect to spend some time for good quality meals, if you've never been to Europe for dinner, you might not appreciate the timeline. We have been anxiously awaiting the opening of this restaurant after hearing rave reviews about the one up in New Hampshire, and we finally got a chance to check it out this past Wednesday night. I am happy to say it lived up to its expectations. Since it was a Wednesday night the place was busy but not packed, so we were promptly seated. They were out of my first choice of wine, but the cab I ordered instead was great. The hubby had an Italian beer. They brought fresh bread and an oil dip that I think had bits of olive in it, but I'm not 100% sure. The bread was warm and soft, and despite my intentions of only eating once slice, I think I ate four. For an appetizer, we tried their fried olive dish - jumbo olives stuffed with cheese and drizzled with honey. Duh-rool. I'm not even a huge olive fan, but they were so good. For main entrees, I got the mushroom ravioli and the hubby got the stone worker chicken with polenta. The hubby raved about the chicken, and I sampled the polenta, which was garlicky and lovely. The mushroom ravioli were in a bed of a savory, super creamy Alfredo sauce and topped with asparagus (I'm pretty sure they used at least a full stick of butter to make the sauce, because when I reheated my leftovers the next day there was a melted tablespoon's worth on my plate). The dish was really delicious, even if I only could eat half and probably gained five pounds in doing so. You don't go out for Italian when you're concerned about your waistline. My only real complaint of the night was after I ordered my entree, the waitress came out and told me they were running low on the mushroom raviolis and asked if I would be willing to mix in a few cheese raviolis with the mushroom. I could have opted for another entree and debated about it for a moment, but decided to be okay with this proposed alternative. The cheese raviolis were fine, but nowhere as good as the mushroom ravioli so that was a little disappointing. I attribute this to the place still being new and still working out some of the kinks, so I am willing to forgive this strange scenario. The bill came out to be around $70 without tip - that was for two glasses of wine, a beer, an app, and two entrees. So it's a little steep compared to most places in the Ayer area, but compared to the other options out there, it is worth every penny. The food was comparable to something you might find in Boston, so it's definitely filling a sorely needed hole in the local dining options. Positives: ambience is beautiful, dessert was very good Negatives: cold (like refrigerator cold) arancini, basic marinara sauce was inedible. It tasted like metallic tomato paste out of a can. My husband didn't like his bolognese sauce either. Other note: we received a "finger bowl" with our dessert with no explanation beyond "finger bowl." I think it was to dip our fingers in if they got sticky, but this was so weird bc we didn't have towels or anything to wipe them off. Service was okay, very pleasant and polite woman but extremely slow despite being at 9:30 at night with most tables already finished with their meals. We do not plan to return. read more

Yelp to the rescue again. Staying in the area for work and needed a place to eat. Asked at the desk where, of course they recommended the in hotel restaurant (bleh) or a place very close by. Of course, I checked reviews first. I'm so glad I did. Nearby restaurant has had a lot of very negative reviews recently. Lucia's was only a 5 minute drive and the menu looked good. Reviews were good so I figured it was worth a try. Wow. A little slice of the North End in the middle of nowhere. Ok Ayer isn't the middle of nowhere but you can see it from there. (badump) Things started off well as I was eating early and got a parking spot right in front of the restaurant. I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door and seated immediately. My server came to the table with in a minute or two to ask me if I had been there before and to show me the wine list. Decor was overall nice but as way too many places do, they had stupid Christmas tree lights (icicles no less) in the window to provide "ambience" and the first chair I sat in was a little wobbly (they quickly replaced it and apologized). Sorry the lights are a pet peeve of mine as they detract from what otherwise would have been a very nice ambience. For appetizer I started with the "Date e Pancetta" which is figs stuffed with goat cheese wrapped in baked pancetta. OMG. Absolutely fantastic mix of sweet and savory. I loved them but they might be a bit sweet for some as an appetizer. For dinner I had the Vitello "Lucia" which is small pieces of veal stuffed with mozzerlla figs and pesto. This is served with starch and fresh vegetables. I selected the risotto. Very minor complaint is the pesto was very fresh and a tiny bit too gritty. Every now and then I would get a bite that was just shy of a nice pine nut crunch that you sometimes get in fresh pesto but not quite completely ground. Another minor complaint was that the risotto while well cooked was slightly lacking in flavor. However, these were very minor complaints and did not detract from an overall excellent entree. Foolishly (for my waist line) I listened to the dessert choices. They had fresh zabaglione. I absolutely love zabaglione but it is so hard to find someone that makes it well. They not only made it well it was one of the best I have ever had. It had a fantastic consistency and excellent flavor. It had fresh strawberries, bananas and blue berries mixed in that provided an excellent "pop" of fresh flavor. They get 5 for their amazing service but may have got it for the food anyways. We had a death in the family and stopped to get flowers across the street and I saw their poster for "To Go family dinners"-perfect for an impromptu gathering. They weren't open for lunch but I called and an hour later we were picking up amazing home style Italian. The size of the meatballs were impressive - from the Italian in our midst. The sauce was amazing, the sales fresh and the cannoli delish. My only regret is we were too early in the day for fresh bread, but the day old was pretty amazing anyways.Thank you so much and kudos to your kitchen. Excellent offerings, very rich comforting Italian food. Warming environment on a main street. On the downside, very overpriced for the community and general area. Boston prices in small town of 8,000 people. Vitello "Lucia" - Veal bundles filled with house made mozzarella, pesto, mission fig & Prosciutto topped with a velvety Marsala wine demi reduction. Let me start out by saying I've been wating to try out this restaurant since it opened. It looks really neat and I scoped out the menu before as I am vegetarian. My husband and I finally had sometime to ourselves (we have a 3 1/2 yrld) and decided to go out for dinner. We decide to finally try out Lucias. We got there at about 5:15 on a Saturday. As we entered there was only one table seated, I repeat one table seated with no one waiting. The hosted asked us if we had reservations and we did not (as we looked on to an empty restaurant). She proceeded to tell us that they are all booked up until 8 with reservations and that she could not seat us. REALLY?! Okay? I could atleast understand if the restaurant was half full but it wasn't. So we proceeded to go another restaurant in the area and after we were done (6:30ish) decided to check out the capacity of the Lucias just for kicks. Yep it was not even half full. Maybe if I ever have time again I will check it out and actually be able to try it out and redue this review but for now it is what it is.. read more

Ayer resident here. I don't know, maybe it was because we did take out and didn't eat in. The gluten free seafood alfredo was clumpy. The side of risotto wasn't even as good as the Lundberg Farms organic boxed rice from the supermarket. Blah. Considering the lack of palatable options in the area, I wanted this place to be good.
