I stopped in yesterday with a friend for a quick drink. The place was semi busy at about 5:15pm, but we were told there was an hour wait because of incoming reservations. There was seating at the bar, so we headed there without a problem. My friend ordered the Paloma which was good and tart if you're into Tequila. I wanted something fruity, so I tried the Jungle Bird. It was perfect. Not too sweet and not heavily booze forward. It was wonderful for a hot summer day of strolling around. The bartender serving us got the job done but wasn't overly friendly. A great find while visiting Madison for a day. We got there when it opened so didn't need a reservation. We were looking for a place we could eat at with our dog, and they have a great street patio that allows dogs!! So convenient. We always have our own portable dog bowl and water bottle, but it was so nice for our server to offer us a dog water bowl. We each got a beer to start. We ordered a 14" wood-fired build your own pizza and added basil, garlic, green pepper, and artichoke. The basil and artichoke really added to the overall flavor to the pizza. There is always a time and place for that so I opted to sit outside to take in the people watching in the square and enjoy the sunset. I ordered "The Boss" pizza and a New Glarus Spotted Cow. Unfortunately by mid dinner time they had sold through all their fennel sausage so I took Hana's suggestion with grilled chicken. While I was getting my tastebuds ready for the sausage, the chicken was a notable substitute! The wood fired pizza is something I'm drooling about as I type this review! Pizza came out piping hot, beer hit the spot and the energy outside was good. Service was awesome too. Hana checked on me a number of times but I was just hungry and thirsty, almost hangry. I would've come back a second time but there was so much to do, see, and drink within a two mile radius that I couldn't squeeze in another trip here. Went to Lucille last night for date night with my husband. Was glad to have a reservation, since the place was packed! Got the She's A-maize-ing and the 6 Mile Classic. Both were quite good, and food didn't take as long as I thought it might based on the crowds. It was waaay too much food for us, but happy to take home leftovers! Would have liked to try the nachos or quesa birria tacos, but we really wanted to try one of each type of pizza (wood fired and steel pan) and already had more food than two people could possibly eat. Service was pleasant, and the outdoor space was nice, though it would have been great if the chairs were a little more comfortable. This place is really cool. Anna C was our server and she was fantastic! She was very accommodating and attentive. We had the pork nachos, a wood fired pizza and flourless brownie. All very tasty but the brownie was excellent. The cocktail menu was really cool but we were here for lunch and didn't have anything this time around. Next time for sure. So we checked into our hotel and the front desk agent suggested this place for drinks. Well we looked at the menu and figured we should eat there as well! We had the cheese pizza, I had the arugula salad, and two empanadas: one chicken and one beef. The chicken empanada was definitely better than the beef. 5 stars for ambiance and awesome old bank building with exposed brick walls and everything else! 5 stars for service as our waiter was only a month in and totally rocked it. 4 stars for the food - it was definitely delicious but didn't have that "savor every minuscule bite" feel. We both got the fish tacos which quantity wise is great - 3 tacos in corn tortillas presented nicely with your choice of beans and rice or chips and salsa. And the tacos weren't whimpy like I find some are - they were packed full. I'm a sauce lover so I think they could have used more of that. We also had two empanada for appetizers and the best part of those was the sauce (no surprise there for me). Again, really delicious but maybe not super memorable. Like other reviewers said, take advantage of checking in on Yelp when you arrive for a free beer, Moscow Mule or 1 other option I'm forgetting. We made a reservation for Lucille's for 7pm and early on in the day realized we were going to be later than that. The host was super helpful and was able to reschedule our reservation for 8pm with our table ready to go as we walked in at that time! Food was amazing, the crust on their deep dish was uniquely perfect and the umami pie was the right amount of funk and goodness. We ordered 2 of the shrimp skewers as a starter, we only received one. After talking to our server she rushed the other order and got it taken off our bill at no request. Cocktails were fun and creative, not hard to enjoy a couple. Overall great experience and the ambiance is perfect for the setting, it can get a little loud but that's to be expected with a restaurant that's almost at full capacity. I can't honestly say why I would give this place any less than 5 stars. Came on a weeknight and got seated immediately at a patio table that was safely distanced from everyone else. The front desk girls seemed frantic so I'd suggest a manager help out to get organized. I liked how the salads come in different sizes - great for sharing. The GOAT pizza was phenomenal (doesn't need scallions btw). The dough itself was flavorful and had a nice chew. Waiter was great and very patient. To be honest, I was thinking something was going to be wrong with our meal based on all of our edits - but everything came out exactly as requested. Perfect. As a tourist, any restaurant you go to is a gamble. But I'm glad this one worked out. We'll be back next time in Madison. When we arrived there was an hour wait ( should have made reservations) , but didn't think it was this busy on a Tuesday at 6pm. Lucille is a good spot for a pizza lover. Their pan / Detroit pizza was like the child of the Chicago thick crust and New York thin crust. It had enough crust to hold the shape of the pizza but not overwhelmed that you ended up full after 1 slice. The pizza was very good: hearty and cheesy, all you could asked for in Wisconsin. Arrived on a Thursday before 6p with no reservation and was greeted by a very abrupt and rude hostess that stated she had no tables available until 9p, however, there were only a few tables with customers in the entire restaurant and a few people at the bar. No big deal...maybe a lot of people were coming in and they were about to fill up? So we took a seat at the bar. I really wanted to like Lucille's and have been looking forward to trying it out. As a new resident in Madison (and living around the corner) everyone told me this should be on my list. Multiple bartenders and yet it took almost 15 minutes for someone to take our drink order. Again, there was not a crowd at the bar and everyone else had been served. I ordered an Old Fashioned and when my friend had questions about the drink menu the bartender responded with "you're not from here are you? You won't like that drink. You should just get an original. I can't explain it to you if you don't know." The service went downhill from there. Appetizers delivered with no silverware or napkins (we went to an empty table and got our own). Asked for water and didn't get any. Tried to get the attention of the other bartenders to reorder drinks because the one that took our original order was gone and they would make eye contact but not actually ever come to take our order. Maybe the lack of quality service wouldn't have been so glaring if others at the bar were not different service. Bartenders were engaged in flirting and lengthy conversation (good for you but take care of other patrons in between your flirting) and visiting with friends. Pros: pizza was good. Since I live around the corner maybe I'll get take out. Cheese curds were ok. Had better at the bar down the street and the service was AMAZING. My soon to be mother in law came into town, and we stopped by Lucille's right before Christmas. They had turned the restaurant into a fun pop up bar, full on decorated and themed with Christmas cheer! This included Santa hats as chair backings, lights galore, and themed cocktails including one named after a popular "Die hard" phrase. I'll leave you to guess the name ;) We shared a vegetarian pizza and apps, which was all delicious! I had a whiskey old fashioned which was spot on as well. The restaurant can get crowded and even on a Wednesday night, we were lucky to get a table. I definitely recommend a reservation or planning on waiting for a seat. I have heard there is a cool lounge space downstairs, but we were unable to check it out secondary to it being closed for a private event. We'll definitely be back! read more

Lucille is that kid who thinks they're super popular but is mostly just tolerated because they have a pool. (Lucille does not have a pool. This isn't literal you guys!) The food is pretty good. But I've never had anything that impressed me and the most memorable parts have been the time it takes for the food to get to the table and the price tag. The service has also been pretty good. I've felt forgotten or neglected a few times but the space is gigantic so I feel for those servers. And when sitting at the bar the bartenders have a tendency to talk to their friends/regulars so long that my friends and I have sat with empty glasses much longer than we'd like and have felt kind of unwelcome overall. The bar is nice though, good cocktails and wine. I think they're known for their rum selection? The space looks huge but always feels cramped, even when it's not that full. Aside from that it's a cool space. The basement feels pretty cool/exclusive. Not my favorite, wouldn't recommend it but wouldn't refuse to go if it were someone else's first choice. read more

Our group saw that Lucille offers gluten free crust and decided to go for dinner. We ordered appetizers and a bottle of wine. Everything was great so far. Then comes the pizza. I have to emphasize that there is nothing more disappointing than seeing your friends get a delicious looking pizza while simultaneously being served toppings on a piece of cardboard. The gluten free crust was atrocious. At a seemingly nice establishment such as this, I was expecting more. I really like Lucille. The design of the restaurant, the vibe, the extensive menu with so many types of pizza, everything about it is great. There's definitely something special about sitting in a building with such a historic feel on a warm day, breeze streaming in through the open windows, while indulging in some delicious pizza. We've tried a couple of the salads and appetizers on our visits. The cheese curds are good, but not my favorite in Madison. But that's fine, because the salads are great. We've tried both the market salad and the Italian salad, and both had really fresh ingredients, great dressings, and were loaded up with healthy vegetables. The small salad was a very generous size for a small, and absolutely enough for both of us to share on the side of our pizza. Between the two we tried, we liked the market salad a little better, which came with tomatoes, radishes, and carrots when we got it, perfect for the warm weather. There are two main types of pizza at Lucille: the steel pan pizza, which is kind of like a cross between Detroit style and Sicilian, and the wood-fired pizza, which comes in two sizes and has a nice chewy crust. Both are good, probably just depends what you're in the mood for on any given day. Another thing to keep in mind when choosing is that the steel pan pizza is really large though, so it would be hard to eat on your own unless you're planning to take home leftovers. My favorite of the steel pan pizzas is the weekender, which adds homemade sausage, pepperoni, cremini mushrooms, red onion, banana peppers, and olives to the usual tomato sauce and mozzarella. I love toppings on pizza, and this one came completely loaded. That said, while I really liked the toppings, the best parts of the steel pan pizza in my opinion were the tomato sauce (so full of tomato flavor) and the caramelized cheddar cheese crust. That crust really makes the pizza. From the wood-fired pizzas, I'm a big fan of the umami pie, which is so different from any pizza I've had before. It's topped with black garlic creme fraiche, manchego, grilled chicken, mushrooms, spinach, caramelized onion, rosemary, and scallions. Probably helps that I really love black garlic, onions, and rosemary, as those were the dominant flavors of the pizza to me, but I thought this pie was just really, really good. So many of the pizzas sound good, and they also have seasonal specials, so it should be easy to find something to fit all different tastes. read more

We went to Lucille's as a back up plan. We were intimidated by the price of their brunch dishes. I wanted something delicious, filling, and not going to eat up my bank account. The OG brunch place was packed to the brim, so we hopped across the street the the far less crowded Lucille. I liked all of the windows letting the natural light shine in on the beautiful bar area. We were led upstairs and quickly sank into the very comfortable booth seats. We ordered our Daiquiris and Moscow Mules (free with a check-in on Yelp) and began to peruse the menu. (The Moscow Mike here was easily the most enjoyable Moscow mule I've ever had) Though the brunch menu was short, the dishes were surprisingly filling. The Cuban Sandwich was a solid choice for my partner, and though I generally steer towards veggie heavy dishes, I dove into the Carnitas Hash. The flavors were brilliant. Though I couldn't finish all of my food, my partner was happy to gulp down the rest of the dish. A little pricey, the food was good. I would definitely come back for the drinks. read more

This was our first time trying Lucille's, and it didn't disappoint! We went on a Friday around 3pm after a successful interview. My partner had already eaten, so we ordered just the margarita pizza for food, and it was delicious and the ingredients were fresh. We each got a beer and as an IPA lover I really enjoyed the Double 755 IPA, I rated it 4.75/5! After ordering we saw a few signs about happy hour, and asked our waiter. We found out that on Fridays from 3-6 they put out a variety of their pizzas and you can grab a few half slices to try some different pizzas while having a drink at the bar. I've noticed recently that restaurants are pulling back on happy hour offerings, so it was awesome to see such a great happy hour here. Lucille is a tougher one to rate. It's a great space inside. Nice tap menu. They usually have a cider, too - would like to see more than one. Excellent Yelp check-in offer of a free tap! Really thinks it's cool how it was a bank before and such a unique layout. Really like the guac appetizer, it's quite great. The nachos were not worth it, very meh. The cheese was not proportionate with the chips, which effects how it melts and you eat it. Actually, the ingredients in general seemed disproportionate to me. Maybe I'm splitting hairs, I love nachos and didn't love these. Maybe they need some re-working. And I don't know what it is with the bar staff, but they seem so off-putting. Like you can just sit and wait until we feel like asking you if you want a drink and to serve you when we feel like it. I don't know if it's an ego thing or what makes them feel like they're so special to decide when to wait on customers. And if I got that vibe only once, I'd probably just ignore it. But, it's been multiple times I've gone in there and sat at the bar and there's just this air of arrogance and I'll sit so long where no one says a word, not even the basic I'll be with you soon. It's always been the male bartenders, which I think I've only had a female bartender once, she was very nice. Most are men though, oddly. But seriously, it's the service industry business of which I was a part of myself for a good 8 years. Why is it sometimes hard for bartenders to be nice and have a personality with people. If anything bartenders and servers should be great with people rather than just nice, which is at the very least. Customers give you their money. Be extra with them as the job requires and you might get extra from them, too! It seems better than a 3 star place, so I guess 4 it is. But, the bartender attitude/vibe needs work. We got 2 orders of cheese curds for the 5 of us to share. It came with a side of marinara sauce and ranch, both great options. The pizza took a little longer to come out (the menu does call this out) so I wouldn't come here if you're looking for a quick bite. The pizza was pretty good but I wish there was less cheese and more toppings. We felt like there wasn't enough sausage. I also took off some cheese because it was too heavy. I would come here again but probably wouldn't visit more than a few times a year. There are other pizza places in madison that I prefer. read more

I picked Lucille for a double date since I've been here previously and knew how awesome the ambience and food was. I always love visiting historic buildings downtown, and Lucille really captures a cool industrial hip vibe. The pizza was the bomb as always...our waiter was very friendly however there were a few things out of his control that we all got a bit annoyed about such as only having one bar tender for the entire restaurant. We had 5:45 reservations on a Tuesday and it didn't seem overly busy, and it took 35 minutes to get our first cocktails. The food service was great - we were worried about how long it would take considering how long the drinks took, but everything came out pretty quickly. Our party shared an order of cheese curds which were ok, and an order of guacamole which didn't seem as fresh as the last few times I have visited. We ordered a brick oven pizza which had amazing flavor from their brick oven, and we also shared a pan pizza that was delicious with sauce on top of the cheese. I'm obsessed with their pizza sauce...it's SO good and they don't skimp on their pizzas. I recommend branching out to a pasta dish using that sauce!!
