Lucky Danger is located in Chinatown near multiple other businesses and with a lot of foot traffic so just look out for the red sign. Once you find it the inside has ample seating options ranging from bar seating for happy hour and a more comfortable section for lunch and dinner but doesn't serve happy hour. We made a reservation a couple of f days before so I was seated a few minutes prior to arrival although my friend came done minutes late I did not feel like a timer was hanging over me for the other party to show up. Now the food, was so tasty. This is a modern Chinese menu and they are not shy with their ingredients but it's also not done in an intimidating way. The sticky spicy beef was my favorite and a must try on the appetizer menu. Very flavorful short rib that was tender at the middle but a little crisp outside and the accompanying sauce was amazing. All of our dishes came with a side of salad which helped to balance the proteins and provided a refreshing option on a hot summer day. The allium pancake I did not care as much for in itself but it came with a shredded pork salad dish situation on the side that you could construct together with the pancake and that I loved. The dumplings were also very tasty and cane with a side of horseradish which gave a unique flavor. We don't play mahjong so had no idea when this restaurant opened a little over a year ago in the space previously occupied by Red Apron. Found out about it through DC summer restaurant week listings so had to go give it a try as we are always on the look out for new Chinese restaurants especially in downtown DC. The layout of the space is not much changed, still two sides bar and dining room divided by a wall with the smaller mahjong bar and room in back. like it that the tables still have good spacing Even the two tops. The RW lunch offering has a good variety of starters and entrees (Even including a burger and fries). We had dumplings, spring rolls, shrimp and beef dishes plus egg custard and sesame mocha for dessert. It's good to go with more people so you can share the dishes. Dumplings are steamed with choice of beef or chicken filling and spring rolls are vegetarian. The spring rolls are a bit strange - quite large and the wrapping somewhat glutinous unlike the usual flakey crispy types. Both beef and shrimp entrees have generous portion sizes and very tasty. as for dessert - the egg custard is the Portuguese style (which is quite different from Chinese especially the crust) unfortunately not my favorite, the mochi is very soft with a super runny white (or grey) sesame filling - gotta be very careful or you'll spill all the runny filling. Lucky Danger is a casual spot- good for dates or friend groups (saw many groups of 4) and it's in a great location downtown. I booked a reservation on Opentable at least a week out for a Friday night for me and my husband. We parked a few blocks over on Indiana Ave & between 4th and 5th streets (there is metered parking), but it's close to a couple of metro stations. We arrived a few minutes early prior to our 6:30 reservation, but they seated us immediately. The place was already busy, and the tables turned over quickly. The food we ordered arrived quickly and we were done in about an hour. Tough decision on what to order, since to us many of the menu items looked good! We went with two small plates: short rib & bone marrow dumplings (came as 5 dumplings- delicious) and the Chinese snap pea and asparagus salad (it wasn't that exciting- we'd skip this). We ordered the crab lo mein, because it seemed to be the most popular dish (for me it was ok, since the crab falls off the noodles and doesn't really stick). We also ordered a half duck (under the Large Format menu section). It comes with side containers of rice, plums, cucumbers, and butter lettuce, so we ate it wrap-style. I didn't take a picture of the duck dish when it arrived at our table, which was unfortunate, because the description says sausage came with, but we didn't think we got the sausage, and couldn't prove it when we asked after eating. They were out of ginger-scallion biscuits! Our water glasses were always filled up, empty dishes cleared, and they swapped out small plates and utensils quickly. Came here for happy hour. Sat at the bar and ordered with one of the bartenders. He gave me a recommendation for a non alcoholic drink. He actually ended up giving me a second one on the house! The lemon iced tea was refreshing and not too sweet. Tried the beef dumplings and the chicken dumplings. Both were fried which is ok but I prefer steamed. I believed fried is the only option. I like the sauce of the chicken dumpling but wasn't as much of a fan of the mustard sauce that came with the beef dumplings. The $15 entree can't be beat. I love me some lucky danger! This place has so much to offer--great fun and great food! My personal favorites are the dumplings and crab lo mein. There are no words for the crab lo mein--it's SO tasty oh my gosh. Succulent, fresh, aromatic, and has a citrus punch. The service is also incredible, your glass is never empty and a plate never sits in front of you empty. It's a very fun environment and loud, although there are tables that provide some a bit of quiet from the two bar areas. They also offer Mahjong lessons and tables to rent. This place has some buzz, but my experience was mixed. Despite several open tables that didn't fill during my time there, I didn't have a reservation and was told to wait 15 minutes or so in a loud and cramped bar area. Make a reservation I guess. Service continued to be a mixed experience. It took a while for them to get to me, and they seemed focused on a diner who I guess is an Instagram influencer who someone there follows (apparently they don't follow my Yelp account), but I could not in good faith accuse them of failing to keep me hydrated and well looked after either. The menu has shifted with time, and they have some labeled vegetarian options but these can be limited. The only one on offer the night I happened in was the classic ma po tofu. Their rendition was certainly interesting; it had a note of sweetness uncommon to this dish, but could not be accused of lacking in salty or savory flavor, and came with mushrooms and rice cakes for a dynamic textural experience. I attempted to order a fancy beverage that was supposedly on tap to be told they were out of it, so I asked if they had tea, which oddly was not on the menu. They ultimately brought me a good quality tea and didn't charge me for it; the food was on the higher side and it is an expensive neighborhood, so I'll take that. The desserts looked intriguing but I did not have room. The actual quality of food was good and DC is not overflowing with middle- to high-end Chinese cuisine, so I really want this place to succeed. We had a condensed menu for restaurant week which included some of their top sellers. We started with two versions of dumplings which were delicious! The morels and sweet corn sauce was incredible. For our entrees we got the duck fried rice which had foie gras woven throughout it - YUM. The only thing that feel short was the dessert. So, I attempted to dine in here one time before during the Thursday Dinner event in Downtown DC. It was busy but the young lady was not the friendliest. So, I ended up leaving instead. Fast forward to me bringing my friend visiting from out of town here during a less busy time to try the happy hour menu! We had a long day at work and wanted some good drinks and food. This experience, the same host was a bit more friendly. The issue we had was the bar seating. My understanding is that it's first come first serve. However, two women were holding two bars seats and when we asked about them, they told us their friends were on the way. We turned and just stood up at the bar by the wall, instead. We had already walked there and was ready to just move along. Our bartender was attentive and he made us some great drinks. The food was good, too. Here lies the additional issue that really kind of turned us off. We stood there for an HOUR! A WHOLE HOUR before those two seats being held were occupied! They were allowed to hold those bar seats for that long but that was a financial loss on the business. We came ready to buy plenty of drinks and food but ended up getting one drink a piece and three appetizer before moving on to have actual dinner somewhere else nearby. We basically watched those seats go unoccupied for that long! If it's FCFS at the bar, enforce that, please. Amazing dumplings and drinks! We came during happy hour and tried both the beef and chicken dumplings and they were both so flavorful, we couldn't decide which we liked better. Drinks were boozy and delicious. We really liked the Ju Zi Sling and imperial mule. The Lucky Danger lager was really bright and refreshing. General Tso's chicken was good, although we would have preferred a crispier batter on the chicken. Had a lovely Restaurant Week meal there with a friend, and from how busy it was on a Tuesday at 6pm, I'm guessing others did too! The drink I wanted (Jú zi Sling) was not available, so I tried the Empress Tea (whisky, pear, and chrysanthemum tea). It was kind of tiny, but incredibly delicious. My friend suggested splitting all the dishes we got, because she's awesome. For the small plates, we ordered the blistered 5 spice squash and the crab Rangoon, followed by the mapo tofu and crab lo mein for entrees, and one of each of the desserts. Both of the appetizers were excellent. I wouldn't have picked the squash, but I'm so glad we got it. The flavors were complex, a little bit spicy, and a whole lot delicious. The crab Rangoon were fantastic as well - that sauce is amazing. The two entrees were also fabulous. We both tried the crab lo mein first because it was less spicy than the Mapo tofu. It was fantastic. The sauce was incredible, the noodles were the perfect amount of chew, and there was loads of crab on top. The mapo tofu was like "hey, I'm great too!" as we were eating the noodles. It had rice, cakes and tofu and ground beef and a nicely spicy sauce. So good. For me, the desserts were the only letdown. Banana bread pudding was fine, although I was a little confused by some of the flavors, like having both lemon curd and chocolate in the same dish. And there was something about the egg tart. I just didn't like, which may have been the compressed pineapple. It's weird because all of the ingredients sounded great. In addition to the food being great, the service was really fantastic. Our server Natalie was incredibly helpful and there whenever we needed her, as was the rest of the team. We also got the Chinese egg noodle and tomato as our entreee and apple mooncake as our dessert. Everything was absolutely wonderful! We especially liked the crab rangoonsand Chinese egg noodle and tomato though I wish there were more noodles in there. The apple mooncake was wonderful also! I didn't love the beef short rib. Lucky Danger was such a highlight of the pandemic before they closed in Mount Vernon and I'm happy to report they're back in DC and *incredible*. For mains we did the Mapo Tofu ($25) and Chinese Egg Noodles and Tomato ( $25). We finished with the egg tart ( $13 ). Overall the music was a little loud but fun. Happy hour only goes until six. I hope they expand it to 630/7 so more people come in to try it before committing to the full menu. You can reserve mahjong tables in the back! What we wanted was some Chinese food. This one came up, and the name appealed to me. AshleyDenise was our server and was very nice. The atmosphere was a bit trendy. Rap music was playing when we came in, but it just didn't seem to fit with the Chinese food ambiance we were expecting. My wife and I got Crab Rangoon (Snow crab, Tobiko, cream cheese, ginger, scallion, Old Bay) for an appetizer. It was different, but good. I did not know Tobiko were tiny fish eggs, but they added something to the item and that was fine with me. For entrees we had Ginger Scallion Tiger Prawns (Baby bok choy, oyster mushroom, basil, crispy onion, ginger scallion butter) and Crab Lo Mein (Maryland blue crab, leek fondue, shiitake, caramelized whey, kaffir lime) While the Ginger dish had tiger prawn heads, my wife and I had just had prawns two days ago at another restaurant. They served tiger prawn heads with tiger prawn meat still attached. Here it was tiger prawn heads with some shrimp. There just seemed to be a mismatch. The Crab dish was good, but the noodles were impossibly long. There was no way to get them from the presentation plate to the dinner plate without either making a mess or cutting the noodles before moving them.
