The doughnut display at Lucky Donuts looked tempting with the usual collection of raised, old-fashioned, and filled donuts plus a few discoveries like fritters, cream-filled donut holes, and fruit-filled taquitos. Sadly, the donuts were dry and luckless when it came to dessert satisfaction. The chocolate-covered raised donuts purchased to surprise my wife didn't help me get lucky while a pair of old-fashioned donuts for me simply tasted old more than being fashionable. Worst of all, the chocolate used is a light brown substance that doesn't even taste like chocolate. 2 stars means 2, dos, deux, ni, dalawá, er, shnáyim, hai, 'elua, dō, or dva. This is a small mom and pop place and the donuts here are pretty good. The bavarian cream donut holes are yummy but I think the highlight is really their ham and cheese croissants. A quick search on Yelp showed that L.D. was the closest doughnut store in proximity to where I was working today (7-11 doesn't count because I'm not that desperate..). My favorite thing to get here is the ham & cheese croissant... It' s perfect for times when we're running behind and need breakfast fast... The croissant is not the flaky and buttery kind, it' s flat but it's HUGE. The ham and cheese that's in it is really good :p They will warm half for breakfast and we usually save the other half for lunch. The donuts here are not bad but I've had better. They leave a gritty after taste in your mouth and are sometimes dry but they have a unique honey chocolate donut and a few other items I normally don't see. The donuts were good - the fritter SUCKED! So it was National Donut Day and I couldn't resist, so I stopped into Lucky for some donuts prior to a client meeting. I picked a quality assortment of old fashion, devils food cake, blueberry and standard glazed and of course a fritter for myself. The fritter was crap! It had no cinnamon nor did it have any apple goodness? It was a waste of calories; they need to go back to school on how to make fritters. The only saving grace for the place was the standard donut. The blueberry donut was good, better than the usual I would say. It was flavorful and had a good amount of blueberries actually in it. This little Donut shop is phenomenal. Places like Randy's Donuts in Inglewood and any Crispy Kreme location can not hold a candle to this establishment. Lucky's is open 24/7/365 and always has fresh donut at the ready. They have a wide selection but my friend and I have our favorites. I am more of an Apple Fritter with the occasional Chocolate Glazed; my friend is more of an Old fashioned type. The donut holes that is amazing. It is located in a little strip mall with a Subway, L&L and 1-2 other restaurants so it is pretty nice to pick up some desert with your meal. Lucky's has a large refrigerator with a wide variety of ice teas and milk to choose from. The prices are very reasonable which could be a bad thing when you realize how much money you have left over while you are still in a donut shop. They have a few interesting donut varieties like their tiger tail among others. Also they have a variety of donut holes. Don't see that at many places. Service is friendly, I'm always greeted with a smile. Seems a bit overpriced if your just buying a couple, but buying by the dozen is reasonable, coffee is cheaper if you hit the 7-eleven across the street, but creamer and milk is fresh and cold. ZERO stars, actually. I wanted four dozen donut holes for a potluck tonight. I was specific in letting the lady know that I wanted four flavors in four rows. I even showed her via hand motions so they don't mix. She interrupted abruptly and said I can have a box or else she will bag them. Box was my preference but not mixed up. I showed hand motioned again and she interrupted saying "yea, yea." She was smashing 2-3 donut holes with the each tong transfer. After the second dozen, I asked if I can see the box. I want to start off by saying I hate doughnuts. I hate how they are overly sweet and how they leave that greasy film on the roof of your mouth. I gotta say, I used to go to Dough Boy donuts, but today I hit up Lucky on the way to work to get the morning crew a dozen of the buggers. The person who helped me was pretty cute, but she may be underage as what looked like her mum wandered out of the back. So I forwent the obligatory flirting and asked for a mixed dozen. She then asked me what kind I wanted. But, I thought a mixed dozen is like the omakase at a sushi place. Oh well, I chose some random doughnuts and went on my merry way. I go to Lucky Donuts since I work in El Segundo. I love this place because its a classic donut shop, they make fresh donuts twice a day. My favorite thing to get here are the classic glazed donut holes. I've never had a crappy, hard-assed ball of dough from this place. Only sweet, soft, flaky goodness. The fact that this is an independently owned establishment makes the quality even better. This isn't some chained owned, Krispy Kreme type spot. I hate Krispy Kreme, their shit is way too sweet. Contrary to popular belief, there is a such thing as too sweet. If you happen to be in El Segundo (I can't really imagine a reason to go to El Segundo other than for work) check out Lucky Donuts. I'm shocked how many positive reviews this place has. It's kinda hard to screwup donuts. Guess lucky is in the name only. I live by a yum yum shop which seems like French pastry in comparison to lucky. Donuts looked good enough on shelf but the selection we had (on two occasions) was tasteless, stale and just plain off. The kicker is I swear I smelled insect repellent or similar in the place. Service is mediocre at best. My advice is get packaged donuts at the 7 11X street. read more
