Ludvigs is seriously some of the best chowder I have had in Sitka. I appreciate the chunky and meaty texture that hits the spot any time of the day! The soup itself is not too thick- and pairs well with the delicious bread it is served with. We also shared their prosciutto sandwhich - which was equally delightful and another "must try" when visiting. Lastly- its a good idea to try whatever desserts they have that day. We split their apple turnover and it did not disappoint! We wound up purchasing another to take back to the hotel. There is casual seating inside for perhaps 12 or so, while outside you can enjoy eating your food near the water. Ludvigs is truly a gem! From their delicious food to their warm and friendly service, I will definitely return the next time I am in Sitka. Thank you Ludvigs! read more

I can totally see why this chowder is so popular in Sitka. It was a spicy bowl of goodness, and served at a nice hot temperature. It's perfect for cold, windy, and rainy days. It's located at the gift shop next door to the Sitka Sound Science Center. It's where you can sit down and soak in the view of Sage Beach. It's where many people go to climb on the rocks and look for sea life that has washed ashore. It's amusing to watch them. You may even see Bald Eagles fly by looking for fish. We did. There was a line, but everyone was served quickly. The menu is very simple. The chowder with spicy chorizo is the star. We both decided to get the lunch special. I should have ordered a cup instead of a bowl. This chowder is very hardy. There's a lot going on in terms of flavor. It's very meaty. Hubby asked for hot sauce. She told him that he's not going to need it. He was initially taken aback by this response and refusal to give him any. He totally understood after tasting it, and he even ended up agreeing with her. We totally devoured it. The baguette sandwich was also quite delicious. My husband had some sort of sandwich with pepperoni because he doesn't like prosciutto. He said it was okay. I didn't try it because my baguette sandwich was huge. I couldn't finish it. My advice is to get a cup of chowder and split the sandwich if your significant other likes prosciutto. The price is high for what it is. It's like that everywhere in Alaska due to the cost of transportation. There's limited seating inside, but it's somewhat easy to find a spot if it's not too busy. There are benches outside as well. I would definitely return if ever in the area. It was a great pick-me-up, and very conveniently located on the waterfront trail through Sitka. read more

I visited here when I was on a cruise about 4 years ago. I still have dreams about their chorizo potato chowder. Be sure to check them out!

Tasty chowder in a convenient location towards the National Park and at least a little bit away from the cruise ship chaos. Lots of clam meat, which is nice, and good flavor overall. Tasty bread too. Not mind-blowing (hence 4* rather than 5*) but well worth a stop in the area. read more

The original Lutvig's Cafe doesn't open until 3p (after the cruise shippers have left), but this is a great way to try their delectable chowder. There are only a few things on the menu and their spicy chorizo clam chowder, served with their house made potato baguette bread is the star. It's as good as advertised! They also had chewy chocolate chip cookies (I got the last one) that are big enough to share and very yummy (a little cinnamon?), AND sandwiches in the same great bread. Veggie sandwich had artichokes, yellow and green peppers, garlic, zucchini, onions, and chipotle aoili. The prosciutto-arugula sandwich was maybe even better than the signature chowder, with the right amount of chipotle aoili on it. Warning: it's popular with the cruise shippers, and they close when they run out (around 1p)! Get there early if you have your heart set on it. read more

This place was hard to find but I knew I just wanted some clam chowder and didn't need to go to a full on restaurant for it. I finally found it inside the Sitka Sound Science Center. There is a lady that comes in every morning and sets up a counter with freshly made sandwiches and chorizo clam chowder. The clam chowder was delicious with a slight spicy kick from the chorizo. She gives you a slice of bread with your chowder that I felt was hard and decided I would eat the chowder plain. When getting ready to leave I thought I should at least give the bread a nibble and it had a really good flavor and thought this would have been really good dipped in the clam chowder:/. I was a little slow on this one. Anyway, I'm really happy I tracked this place down. I do have one mystery left to solve though and it's why there is a Ludvig's bistro that seems to have a similar clam chowder and this place is listed as Lutvig's? Are they related? Why the difference in the spelling? read more
