Gabrael was my barber and we had great conversation and he was very in tune with what I was trying to accomplish as he made suggestions on how to cut my hair. Even though I was there at closing time and he had to go somewhere else, he was very patient and meticulous and gave me a fantastic haircut that could put me on the cover of Spin Magazine. He even lathered up my neck and shaved me in fine detail and then even gave me a quick neck massage with some relic of a machine that felt incredible. Clipper cut (I use a #8 guard all over), straight razor neck shave, tonic, massage, in and out in thirty-five minutes on my lunch break, and the barbers seem to know most of the customers by name. Luis, owner and barber, provided me with a face mask so he he cut my hair with precision. He cut my hair to my liking and that's even after showing a pic of what I wanted. He, and staff, are really personable and friendly. He made me feel right at home with our conversations. For the last three years of college I've been a loyal customer of the Avenue Barbershop on South Congress but since graduation I can't justify going down there and waiting two hours in the middle of the week to get a haircut anymore so I decided to look for a place closer to home. I came in mid week around noon and got lucky to catch them at a bit of a down time and was able to jump into Luis' chair immediately. After asking what I wanted to do with my hair he asked if I had been in before and when I told him I hadn't he introduced me to everyone in the shop. Our conversation was easygoing, not forced small talk, and when he asked what I did I slipped in that I actually had a job interview in about an hour. He laughed and told me to not put so much pressure on him. After giving me a great hair cut he threw in a beard trim on the house and told me to come back and get another cut after I got the job. Well, even if I don't get the job I will be back for sure. This place is great, friendly professional staff that give a great hair cut. I wouldn't even mind waiting for a bit if I had to. read more

Sorry for the long review, but I can't say enough good things about these guys. So, I'm really picky about my haircuts. I have really coarse, dry, curly, and wiry hair and so many places try to cut it like it's straight hair. It always ends up looking like someone set my head on fire or like I'm trying to grow a fucked up afro. For the last few years, I've resorted to just buzzing it over the toilet - or even worse - just not cutting it for as long as possible. Today it was the latter. I desperately needed a shave and a haircut. Being new to the area, I figured I'd give this place a shot since it was the only place that said that I could just walk in and get it cut today. They weren't lying. I walked right in and immediately Raymond sat me down and we talked about what I was going for; no wait, no bullshit. I showed him a few pictures and tried (poorly) to describe what I had in mind, and immediately it seemed like he "got" it. Honestly, I wasn't even too sure what I wanted, but he stopped every step of the way to make sure we were moving in the right direction, making changes and refining things before moving forward. I'm so used to the awful "ta-daa!" moment at the end of a haircut, but Raymond made it a point to make sure that wouldn't happen. Usually I'm shy about "correcting" barbers, but he did a great job of making me feel like getting my hair right was a collaborative process. Needless to say, my cut turned out great. As for the place itself, it has a really nice vibe. It doesn't feel stuffy, pretentious, or faux retro-masculine like a lot of places I've seen around Austin; no corny curly moustaches or bow-ties here. Their pricing is very fair, but I'm definitely going to bring cash next time - there's a small but reasonable fee for using a card. It's in a convenient location and there's parking right outside, which is a big plus for me. It seems like the guys here keep tabs on everyone who walks in, and overall there's just a warm atmosphere. Definitely a good first impression - I'll be back. read more

In my search for a true, traditional men's barbershop (unlike the "salons" and other "barbershops" where they buzzer off your hair, with as much care as mowing their yard), I had stumbled on Luis' Corner Barber Shop. On my first visit, Luis' suggested that I know the true name to my rather vague request of how I wanted my hair. This would avoid having the describe it every time. Told me it was called a "low fade, half-guard" and proceeded with the cut. The many years I spent trying to find someone who would gain the same respect as my hometown barber in his attention to detail and customer service had finally been concluded. On all subsequent visits I found all the staff (Luis, Gabriel, and Raymond) to be friendly, talkative but careful of details and respectful to the tradition ways of men's grooming. I would definitely be going there for all my haircuts and goes without saying that I would highly recommend them. read more

These guys are the real deal. I have very difficult hair to cut and they always do a fantastic job. I have been in just about everyone's chair. All types of people and ethnicities (hipsters, professionals, students, white, black, Latin, Asian, etc.) come to this place because they can accommodate a diverse range of styles. The icing on the cake is their bedside manner. They are always very friendly and want you to genuinely have a good time. Another great service that comes standard is their traditional blade shape up and back massage. This cleans up your hair and has it grow back nicely. The massage is just an extra perk to relax you on your way out and shake out any loose hairs that may have fallen. The only downside is this place can get packed because the service is so good. They recently added another barber to keep up with demand though. read more

I hated to do it, but I switched to Finley's on Burnet simply because they take reservations and credit cards. If I found out Luis' took reservations, I'd be back in a hot minute. Also, a $5 upcharge for using a credit card is overkill - there's no way the CC companies are charging you $5 for every $20 in charges. read more
