Had a great kid friendly Covid safe experience yesterday at Studio M with Michelle. Michelle is excellent with kids. She's relaxed, down to earth, and friendly. My daughter had a very grown out very awkward pre-covid pixie that was difficult to work with however Michelle had no problem finding a way to get an angled bob out of something that was basically a dismantled birds nest. Price was very reasonable considering she gave her a very styled "adult" haircut. Would defiantly go back to Michelle in the future. read more

I've had a few not-so-great hair experiences in Boston which is always frustrating. Hair is so important!!! Especially when you color your hair. Based on tons of yelp recs for Patrick, I found him at Studio M where he moved from a previous salon. He is really great! He's fun, friendly, and gives honest advice. He does exactly what you ask for too, which is huge. Don't you hate when your colorist/stylist just does what he/she wants? The worst. Patrick is the opposite. He LISTENS! Now as a blonde, I take my highlights very seriously. If you give a blonde the wrong shade for her skintone, it'll look alllll sorts of wrong. Patrick knows what's up. He put a bunch of different colors in my hair to give it a natural look with plenty of dimension. He really put a lot of time in effort into my foils. I was in the chair for quite a while but the end product was so worth it. And best part? This place is NOT crazy expensive. It's right what I'd expect to pay. I got a cut & full foils (like 4 colors!) for around $135. That's amazing. read more

I've had about 10 haircuts here so far with Michelle and each one has been great. Recently Michelle suggested a new cut and style for me and I love it. Already have had some compliments -- and that's for a man's short haircut. The shop is very clean and they've taken every precaution to be safe during the pandemic. I like the easy online booking system which sends convenient reminders. Also, the parking is easy and free (street or lot across) which is great. Her co-workers, Melissa and Gina, are also very nice and I've seen them do some really good work for their clients. read more

OH MY GOD MICHELLE IS AN ANGEL. I had the WORST mishap that I hope no one ever experiences at another salon- had it done twice there and ended up with streaky, randomly placed chunky blonde highlights. It looked like I was ready to host TRL circa 2002. Seriously. It was bad. I desperately message Michelle Wednesday night around 7-8pm via Yelp. She messaged me back/called me the next morning and told me to come in Thursday at 6pm for a consultation. All I was expecting was a consultation, but she actually colored my hair that night! She ended up using four different shades of color to help my poor hair. Now, it still has some blonde in it, but it's blended, my brown is a richer color and it just all around looks great. I'm so sad I didn't come here first, but I've learned my lesson and will be coming back for ALL my hair needs. Oh, she also only charged me $60 for this, because she is a saint. So after a LONG day, I was aggravated, and had to DRIVE 20 minutes to get to Studio M... instead of walking down my street to the corner for a haircut. And you know what, I couldn't be HAPPIER Why? Its pretty simple. Michelle. She has been cutting my hair for years, and I wouldn't trust anyone else. In stead of finding someone closer or different, I will gladly drive to Michelle. I've been going to Patrick for about 3 years now, originally at the salon where he used to work, and now I've finally tracked him down at Studio M. I realized that in all of this time, I have never written him a review, which is not fair, because he is so so great. Every single haircut he has ever given me has been fantastic - and I've asked for a wide range of styles and cuts, and can be quite picky. So, after finding out that Patrick had moved, I visited Studio M for the first time yesterday, and it's a great little salon - very clean and a great location, and (in my limited interaction) the other staff there seemed very nice. Prices are totally reasonable too, especially for the quality that you're getting. I seriously cannot recommend Patrick and Studio M enough. read more

I've seen this place for a few weeks, and since it's close to my house (and very well reviewed here!) I decided to give it a chance. I'm so glad I did! I had a cut with Kim. I absolutely love the cut, and I also don't mind the affordable prices. I am always looking to support local Somerville businesses, and this couldn't get more local: there are only two stylists here and they are lifelong friends who have worked in the hair industry for a long time. They couldn't have been nicer on the phone or in person. Another bonus is that they are both trained in barber arts (hence the title "barbershop and salon") and I one of the other customers in at the same time as me was a guy. He seemed satisfied with his cut, and I definitely noticed more attentive service than my boyfriend ever gets in his no-frills barbershop... yet their men's prices are on par with the local barber shop! Definitely give them a try. One bonus is that they have some deals for new customers, and they are sure to tell you about them. (Rather than you having to ask.) read more

Michelle is the best! I have been going to her for about three years and will never go anywhere else as long as I live inside 95. She is a complete departure from the "supercuts" type experience. Always happy to listen to what you want, actually cares about her customers and is a real person. She's fantastic and from the first time I went to her she made me feel comfortable and at ease. She does a fantastic job and will give you her honest opinion on what she thinks will look best and not rush you out the door like most hair stylists at other places try to. I have had my hair cut in a million different cities, and even halfway across the globe. I haven't been loyal to a salon in probably 5 years. Studio M has totally changed me. I've loved every cut from the salon (I've had Michelle and Kathy cut my hair), and I always leave smiling and with EXACTLY what I want. The prices are unbeatable and the service is top notch. Just how great are they? I had my hair highlighted for the first time EVER by Kathy and was so pleased despite being extremely nervous and obviously hesitant. She sat me down, talked me through it, and gave me exactly what I was looking for. Michelle was great about talking me through it too and, though Patrick has never done my hair before, he was also really great. I love love love my hair, and Kathy was as kind and patient as can be. After seeing the cost of my men's haircut increase every few months at the salon I had been going to for the last 5 years, I found Michelle and followed her when she opened Studio M last year. She does an outstanding job! A few of the guys I work with have the high and tight style and we're constantly comparing notes on where we go, how much it cost, etc. I consistently get compliments the next day at work whenever I go in to get a cut from Michelle. She has taken the time to figure out what I like, what is going to look good, and is able to adapt throughout the year if I want to go shorter or longer, depending on the weather. The shop itself is always clean and comfortable. Though a wait is rare, there is a big comfy couch to sit in while you're waiting for your turn in the chair. The shop is on one of the busier streets in Somerville, but I don't usually have a problem finding a spot on the street right outside, and there's a free municipal lot right across the street if there aren't any street spots available. For the quality of work and attention to detail Michelle provides, the price is extremely reasonable and competitive. Even after switching jobs a few months ago, and no longer working in Somerville, it is well worth the trip to Somerville Ave every 3-4 weeks to go to Studio M to see Michelle and get fresh. I can enthusiastically and without reservation recommend Michelle and Studio M! If you are seeking a friendly, unpretentious, yet relaxing and refreshing experience for your men's (or women's!) haircut, look no further. read more

Michelle and Patrick are great at cutting hair, and I would recommend seeing either of them. They both really listen to what you want versus what your hair does and create a harmony of the two. I have struggled with haircuts that just don't work for my thick, poofy, wavy hair, but Michelle and Patrick know how to work with it and leave me feeling lucky to have my natural hair- and somehow there's no poof anymore!? The studio is easy to find and has street parking available. It's a little bit of a walk from the Porter T stop, but you'll probably want to parade your new 'do around anyway! read more

I made my appointment online which was extremely easy and also received text message reminders for the appointment. The salon is easy to find and everyone is friendly and welcoming. Taylor cut my hair and she did such a cute job! I had some uneven sections but she fixed me up nicely without completely changing my desired hair-style. I was oh so happy to find out that my favorite stylist, Patrick, had made his way over to Studio M. I went to see him last Friday for a cut and color correction - a sorely needed one at that. It was my first time in Studio M - and I must say, it's a great spot! Easy to find, easy to park at (plenty of street parking right out front), clean, comfortable atmosphere, and the owner Michelle is as friendly, charming, and professional as can be. But anyway! Back to the hair: Patrick (the saint that he is) spent the better part of FIVE HOURS meticulously correcting the 18 months worth of horrible drugstore straightouttathebox dye jobs that I had subjected my poor locks to; bringing the whole haggard mess back to a completely gorgeous shade of my natural auburn. He stayed *well* beyond business hours to make sure that he got it just right. And THEN - well into hour four - he made sure to give me the beautiful cut and styling that I've consistently come to expect from him. I went here for the first time tonight. Learned about them from a friend. LAST night I went to QuickBeauty Salon in Everette and they completely butchered my hair. Had me in tears. Michelle (owner) heard about it and told my friend to send me in. She had me sit with Patrick and he fixed it in like 15 minutes. I'm in love. And THEY WOULDNT EVEN LET ME PAY FOR IT!! Melissa knows exactly what I want when I give a brief description, and I've loved each of my haircuts I've had with her. Because I cut my hair every month, I need someone who can provide consistent cuts, and Studio M Barbershop provides this. Especially for a male haircut in the area, I've found their prices to be reasonable for the service that includes hair wash (the shampoo they use is amazing). And it's very convenient that they provide an online appointment system that you can use to reserve and cancel at will. Just make sure you check the days they are open, since they do close for a significant part of each week. I wish I had found them sooner! read more

2 stars because the staff is so nice. I got my hair cut here months ago. They were super friendly, accommodating, and assured me they'd make sure I got a good cut. It has been years since I've received a good cut and I told her that coming in that I was concerned since I have very long, thick hair. I'm sad to say that only now I'm confident wearing my hair down again. I asked for a layered tapered cut. She told me that it would cut too much length off by tapering it so she suggested keeping the length with a more rounded bottom but with layers. I let her know I wear my hair parted to one side but she said she'd cut it so I could part it anywhere--I found that odd since I only ever wear my hair parted in one spot. But I trusted her and she continued. As you can see in the picture it seems like she took the top half of my hair, cut it to one length and trimmed the bottom. One of my friends said it looked like "a staircase". Mortified. They curled my hair before I left so I wasn't able to see the true cut until I washed it next. After tip, I paid over $80 for this cut and I feel disappointed. I considered contacting them to go back and get it fixed but I felt my hair was too far gone at that point and there wasn't much else to cut... Still on the never ending search for a decent haircut. I have to stress that both the woman who cut my hair and styled it after were so nice. Probably just not a good fit for me considering the other good reviews. read more

Michelle destroyed my hair. I went in to see Michelle to for a full foil. I showed her a picture of what I wanted (it was a picture of Jennifer Aniston) with blonde highlights. After Michelle did my hair, she left me in the dryer for too long and my hair came out white with gold spots. She then went over the gold spots with more foils, further damaging my hair. She did not even blow dry my hair herself, she had someone else do it. My hair came out terrible -- I have gold stripes on my hair. I never asked for gold stripes, nor were there any in the picture I showed her. I also have random stripes of blonde on my roots (see in pictures) and blotches of white in my hair. I will never return to this salon again. I went to another salon to get suggestions on how to fix it, and they were apalled at what Michelle did to my hair. I cannot speak to her cutting ability, but do not go to this salon if you are looking for quality coloring. I followed Patrick from Hair by Christine in Somerville to his new job less than a mile away at Studio M. The salon has tons of parking and is really accessible on Somerville Avenue. Everyone was super friendly, attentive and helpful. The music was a nice mix of top 40 instead of obnoxious pounding house music at noon. Patrick is amazing! He is the first actual hairstylist I've ever had since I used to get haircuts sporadically at best. I met him once in April and it was enough to make him the one for me. He also remembered me on the phone and everything we talked about last spring even though I hadn't seen him again before today! I trusted him to chop off about a foot of hair last time and this time I came back for a cut and color. It was super fast and he made it perfect, making sure every detail was right. It came out incredible! My boyfriend just about died when he walked in from work today. Definitely got that "GL" guarantee! This is now my regular salon (even though the old salon is literally across the street from me) because Patrick is awesome and Michelle was very sweet and I could tip on my card which is a big plus! Highly recommended for anyone in the Somerville/Cambridge area! read more

My review is specifically for Michelle, the owner. Despite all the good reviews on Yelp, I found her being "polite" only when I agreed with her cutting. The moment I voiced out my different opinions (such as I think her cut is still too thick and cutting the side at an angle will look better on me), her smile faded immediately with an annoyed voice telling me "well, I'm not Patrick!", as I mentioned in the very beginning of my appointment that Patrick there gave me a great cut when he was at Hair at Christine&Co. Moreover, when I walked in at the time of my appointment, she was styling for another hair stylist who works there(as she had a party to go to) and had me wait for more than 10 mins past my appointment starting time. But when I wanted her to trim a little bit more at the end of my session, she was very impatient saying "your appointment is over!". I was charged $65 before tips for cutting long hair to above should-length short. I would be ok with the price if I was at least treated like a valued customer, but I was very upset that I was treated this way. I even paid her 20% tips (here I blame myself for being a nice person). I think I would still go back, just for Patrick, definitely not Michelle again. ============Update to my review 05/14/2015============ Okay, Michelle contacted me asking about the specifics and offered to correct my haircut for free by Patrick.
