tl;dr - Drinking, axe throwin' and escape rooms. Gets your adrenaline pumping! What a crazy night to wind up here! I was grabbing dinner in Waukesha on a Tuesday night and wanted to try and swing by Raised Grain for a quick beer. It was around 9 pm and sure enough, Raised Grain was closed. Further back in the same parking lot ... something about a lit "open" sign drew me in ... I took a few steps in the front door and lo and behold ... a gigantic taxidermy bear greeted me. "WHAT HAVE I WALKED INTO!?" I wondered. Answer: Lumber Axe. This place is the first in Waukesha County to feature axe throwing and has only been open for a few weeks now. I had no idea what to expect, but it's got a lot of cool "mountain man" decor and giant wooden targets as well a separate area for the escape rooms. Craft (bottled) beers and mixed drinks keep the night going - but read the sign in the photo area, as zero-tolerance policy when it comes to safety and there is a staff member monitoring and showing you what to do for the axe throwing. Think darts on steroids. You do have to sign off on an electronic disclaimer form which allows you to participate in the axe throwing and escape rooms. You can throw multiple times and we were able to learn the different methods of throwing (two-handed throwing, one-handed throwing) and also playing a "good natured" (depending on your company) competitive axe throwing game. Tweens and older can participate as long as there's adult supervision. Also, there are only five ranges, each with two lanes for two targets which means reservations might be a good idea as this place starts to get busier and more noticed! Great for groups, I told my boss about the place in passing and she's already debating on having a company summer event there. P.S. It sounds like the business is trying to get together or host an "axe throwing league" similar to darts, pool and bean bags! No food, but sounds like you can bring delivery or catering in. As you can tell, this place is very new and it was my first time there (and I haven't tried an escape room yet), so I will be sure to make a return visit and revise or update this review as needed! read more

I was a regular customer at the Brewcade in the same building, and same owner, as this for most of the time it was open, and I looked forward to going there every weekend. Ellen, the lead axe coach, would come and talk to me and convinced me to try axe throwing, and it is a lot of fun, and Ellen is amazing. The owners and employees treated me very well until the end of September, when they decided to replace the arcade with "Krazy Golf" and banned me from their Facebook page for saying I'd have to find something else to do in response to the removal of the games. The bartenders (especially Kris) also scolded me for daring to say anything about it too and told me the owners would tell me to get the hell out. I have never been to a business that treated their customers this way. There have also been several now-former employees who have told me that the owners treated them like garbage. It also sounds like the owners moved from a nice location to this and don't understand Waukesha AT ALL. You're in a college town. All your competition is open until 2 AM. I don't care if you don't want to deal with the late night crowd. And no real signage for Lumber Axe or advertising? Nobody knows you're there! Utter incompetence on all sides here. Do yourselves a favor and avoid this, Krazy Golf, and any other businesses owned by these people. They don't care about their employees or customers at all. read more

I can't recommend this place. We went to throw axes at wood targets, And we did that, but the targets were so torn up when we started, that it was difficult to get the axe to stick. for the $500+ our group spent in the hour and a half we were there, they could have hung new targets. We spent most of our time picking axes up off the floor. The employees were nice, but not really helpful. The place has potential, but its methods and procedures lack common sense. The fact that there's no food served is kind of a problem, I get you don't want a kitchen, but how about a little pizza oven or two? Maybe some chips of some kind? They do allow you to bring your own food in but that's not always convenient. I realize I don't know everything about the daily operations of this business, but from the perspective of a customer, I can think of several easy things, that would have made my visit better. I wish them luck in the future, but I won't be back, sorry. read more

Wow. So much fun. We tried axe throwing once before but this venue made it even more enjoyable. Our first time to Waukesha and loved it. Ellen was our instructor and made the axe throwing fun, engaging and entertaining. Ellen had us play some games which added a bit of competition to the evening. Had a blast for my birthday. Staff was very accommodating and the instructor was super nice. Got a couple commemorative mugs.

Sadly this is the only ax throwing place we have been to that is sub par. Would not waste my time. Axes do not stick. More chips of wood on the floor than I have ever seen at any ax throwing place. Not many axes stuck. And that's from someone who throws in league. Drinks were not very good either. Hope they do better with the next group that comes in read more

This was fun! My friends had their joint bachelor/bachelorette party here a few weeks ago. None of us had ever done any axe throwing, so we had no idea what we were walking into. I can definitely say that we had a great time at Lumber Axe! I loved how the different games were played, and they all made sure to include each member of our group multiple times. You never felt like you weren't getting your turn. The employee who oversaw our session was great as well. He was extremely helpful with his tips and explanations of the games. Had a fun time here with a few friends who wanted to do the axe throwing. Although we didn't do the axe throwing because it was $35 per person we did watch our friends and they enjoyed it. They have a really good selection of beer and hard drinks that are reasonably priced. They also have darts and pool tables upstairs. This place was so much fun! We had an awesome axe instructor Coach Ellen and she was a great teacher and made the event fun. It was our first time throwing and was not hard to do and you do not have to be strong. We just had 2 people in our lane, however would be fun with a big group. Will be back! read more

My first experience was fantastic but my second visit was not so great. The staff was not friendly, they didn't have their escape or virtual reality room open and when we asked about throwing axes it was all booked up by one group for three hours and the bar was empty. I had a large group with me and for the majority of them it was the first experience at the Lumber ax. It didn't make a great first impression. read more

Booked a work event there and it was great! The axe ladies are very helpful and show you all the tips and tricks and manage the games. The beer selection was great as well. The over all location is a bit hidden off of Bluemound but once you are inside it is a beautiful setup. We will be back! read more
