I was a years long Benchmark patient, and have gone to three different locations and seen several PTs. Recently, I took a break from PT, intending to resume in the Spring. However, that changed the other day when I received a collections notice out of the blue; I received no calls, no emails, no mention at my biweekly appointments, and no knowledge that I owe them anything beyond the fee I paid at every single visit over the years. I did receive EOBs from my insurance, and receipts for my visits which I became accustomed to recycling as I was under the impression I had paid in full each visit. I have now spent hours of my day going through my insurance claims over the last two years to review each date the collections noticed listed. In doing so, I realized they did not even credit the listed visits in collections with the amount I paid at each appointment. This business has received years of payments from me and my insurance company, yet once I took a pause on therapy, they silently sent me to collections on a balance owed I was not aware of; this will impact my credit, and the chance I will ever go to their business again, regardless of how great *some* of their PTs are. This time I'll look for a local non-franchised company to support, who does not have a corporate conglomerate drooling at the opportunity to sneakily stick it to their patients.

His advice was consistently insightful and very informative, always willing to elaborate on a lot for me. He also made sure I understood how to manage my stretches and exercises at home and at the gym to continue healing properly. That's part of why this is difficult to write. I'm sharing this because of a pattern I've experienced over multiple visits, culminating in my most recent appointment. Over time, there have been repeated issues with communication, documentation, and coordination related to my workers' compensation case. This is not based on a single interaction. For example, during a prior visit, I was not provided a work release note, which created confusion when I later tried to follow up. When I called to clarify, I was told there was nothing further available, without additional explanation or effort to resolve the gap. Earlier in my claim, there were also instances where documentation had to be corrected retroactively so that my work status accurately reflected my condition and I could receive appropriate compensation. I understand these cases involve multiple moving parts, but situations like that reinforce how important consistency and accuracy are from the start. During my most recent visit, I was asked whether I felt "medically stationary." I explained that I am not a medical professional and not qualified to make that determination. That should come from the provider after a complete evaluation, including coordination with all treating professionals. In my case, both my physical therapist and aquatic therapist had not yet been consulted. The medically stationary status was marked as "not sure," which I appreciate, because it reflects that a full evaluation had not yet taken place. However, the conversation leading up to that point felt rushed and, at times, framed in a way that placed pressure on me to answer something I should not be responsible for determining. Another concern was how the conversation was framed around "moving forward" and "closing the claim." These are things I have expressed over the past two years. I do want to move forward. However, hearing those same phrases reflected back in this context felt misaligned, especially when key steps like coordinating with my therapists had not yet been completed. It gave the impression that my own words were being used to support a timeline that had not been fully evaluated. Wanting to move forward does not mean skipping necessary steps, it means making sure everything has been properly reviewed so that the next step is accurate. I was also told that "this isn't a game" and that "this is my life." I agree with that completely, as I've been saying that throughout this process. But in that moment, it felt less like support and more like pressure, especially when I was being asked to weigh in on something I'm not qualified to determine. Statements like that carry weight, and in a workers' compensation setting, they can come across as pressure if not paired with thorough evaluation and coordination of care. A patient should not feel responsible for advancing the process without full clinical guidance. After two years of navigating this process, I have been consistent in what I've communicated. The issue is not a lack of clarity on my end, it's that those concerns have not always been fully reflected in follow-through. What stands out most is the pattern: moments where communication breaks down, documentation is inconsistent, or decisions move forward without full coordination between providers. In a workers' compensation case, those details directly affect treatment, recovery timelines, and stability. For context, my injury involves the hip, and my background is in aquatics. I am a swimmer, water polo player, and artistic swimmer, and have worked in aquatic environments for many years. The hip is central to nearly every movement, and recovery requires careful, progressive rehabilitation. I have only recently returned to the water, which is a key part of my recovery. Given that, discussing whether I am medically stationary at this stage, without full coordination across my care team felt premature and not fully aligned with the recovery process. I do want to acknowledge that the physical therapy team, especially Andy, has been excellent. That side of care has been thoughtful, consistent, and a very positive part of my experience. Despite the concerns above, I still look forward to continuing care here. I have been in a vulnerable position throughout this process, and I recognize the ways Dr. Joan Takacs and the team have supported me. Edit: Since writing this review, I received a letter dated March 26, 2026 stating that Dr. Takacs is withdrawing from my care and canceling my upcoming appointment. My ATI Physical Therapy ended on August 7th, and though strength improved due to ATI's exercises, the pain had not diminished. Until August 25th. It is now September 20th and the pain remains mostly gone. I agree with some other reviewers regarding the free-wheeling atmosphere (switching therapists, simultaneously handling multiple patients, and billing irregularities--thus the 4-star rating), but the Physical Therapists are very good at what they do--they NOTICE the most subtle movement issues and react accordingly. For example, I have other physical issues that made it difficult to do certain exercises--issues (primarily arthritis) that had nothing to do with why I was there. Katy Mendy, especially, would analyze the problem and find a different exercise that I *can* do. This ability is both science and art, and I appreciate Katy's skill in it. It should be noted that she is not the only Physical Therapist at the site with this ability. Would I go here again? You bet! (By the way, this is Sharon McLeod. Dr. Justin Ilsley has been my PCP for at least 12, maybe 14 years, and I feel genuinely lucky that I found this place so many years ago. Having a naturopath as a PCP works beautifully for me; they treat the whole body, can call in prescriptions if appropriate and if something falls outside their scope I see a specialist. That said, MHC offers a remarkable range of services in-house: naturopathy, acupuncture, herbal therapies, bodywork treatments (focused massage, cupping, kinesiotape), IV treatments (chelation and vitamin supplements), and on-site blood draws for labs. And that's only about half of what they offer. It took me a long time to come around to acupuncture, but I'm a believer now. It's subtle, it treats the whole body, and it may take a couple of visits, but at the very least, you'll leave the calm, peaceful session feeling deeply relaxed and genuinely cared for. More often than not, whatever was bothering you has quietly resolved itself. Of course there's no pressure if that's not your kind of thing. If you're someone who's serious about a holistic approach to your health and not just masking symptoms with a pill, this place is a wonderful fit. It doesn't feel like a cold, clinical doctor's office. You feel like you are entering a warm, supportive, caring, natural environment when you walk through the doors. They take the time to get to know you and understand what's happening in your life, and offer treatments that reflect that. I also really like that they are invested in the community and getting to know their neighbors by occasionally offering fun workshops. Dr. Sarah Jones is a newer addition to the team and every bit as knowledgeable and nurturing as Justin and Beth. And while I haven't worked directly with Beth, I've heard nothing but high praise from the community for her talents and specialized offerings. As a person of color who does not curse or call people names, I can honestly say that this health…read morecenter has failed me in regards to not being able to show empathy enough to provide support after visiting the emergency room years apart for different needs. I had to beg and wait in tears for crutches or a walker when the disk in my back became extremely swollen impacting my entire body causing extreme cramping, loosing feeling in my legs and severe knee and hip pain. I lost full motion of my joint between my leg and my pelvis. Terrible Terrible pain. I had to scoot around the house using a box. Nothing worked! Then when I had my needs neglected at Legacy in N Portland; I was forced to walk around no car in all with a foreign sharp object lodged 1 inch deep in my foot of which no one could find including a Legacy foot specialist. I limped to the store, to my child's school, to the park, and everywhere else. I had to beg for a prescription of pain killers which was not given by Legacy until I seen the specialist days later with the object still in my foot. I prefer herbal remedies over prescriptions, but I still needed the prescription. I spent the entire day calling around trying to advocate for myself the following day after being released from the emergency room. When I called I explained everything to Mississippi Health. Mind you I was never given the option to speak or arrange a time to consult my physician. Instead, I was told right off the back after explaining the horrible experience with legacy that a referral to outpatient surgery "is out of Mississippi Health Center's jurisdiction". I told them the physical in the emergency department required that I follow up with my primary. Mind you Legacy never reviewed my contacts or demographics with me. Legacy never sent over my treatment information either, which I explained. I was given podiatrist options to call and make appointments with without a referral. I ended up waiting 4 days to get the foreign object removed which was very risky and dangerous. Legacy had lied about issuing crutched to me as well. I informed Mississippi about this as well. I was told by Mississippi health that I would get call back. I did not get a call back but ended up calling and told them that they were cruel for not helping me. I was sad! They hung up on me. So its easy to tone police a person of color who is tired, scared, and desperate for services. This is a common form of micro aggression that is normalized and more than often excused. I ended up getting surgery at a different hospital after doing everything on my own. The post op appointment with Legacy consisted of a Podiatrist assistant looking at my foot for a quick minute, changing the dressing after I asked him to, then telling me the appointment was done without the Podiatrist(the expert) coming in to complete the examination and answer questions. To make matters worse, I was sent paperwork to find another provider by Mississippi Health. Even though I have already requested assistance with finding a new provider twice in the last year or so including the following day after my most recent emergency room visit. *** If you are a person of color be aware.*** I was also sent pre-surgery paperwork from legacy requesting a signature that several staff witnessed me signing. I have a picture of one (legacy does not know that I took a picture). They confiscated my form that listed my refusal to consent to vaccinations through biologics which they can place in IV's. Moving forward: I did not know that my younger sister use to be a member of Mississippi until she told me. She said she had been misdiagnosed for years until she switched providers. She lives in another state now. I spent years receiving guesstimates about conditions and had to beg for testing after doing online research and speaking with others regarding conditions. Had I not known the test names, I would not have been offered them. Medical discrimination is hardwired in policy, testing, and procedure and for this reason health care disparities exist across the board. The whole experience has been a gaslight for simple obvious needs that no one regardless of who they are or what color of skin they have should have to beg for. I am well informed and conscious about my health and I myself have worked with vulnerable populations for over 20 years serving the community so I am not anything close to how I have been treated.

They also have sophisticated equipment to utilize diagnostic ultrasound and biofeedback to determine the etiology of your condition. For treatment, they have all traditional exercise equipment as well as shockwave and laser therapies.
