First of all..: when you are surrounded by hotel restaurants, bars and typical tourist fair.. luncheria IS the place to go when you're in Christiansted USVI! Secondly.. don't be a karen... the islands and the people operate at a different speed and a different culture. If you have that imperialist mentality where people serve on you hand and foot.. this is prob NOT the place for you. Thirdly.. don't expect Michelin star service/ food. This place has been here for 46yrs as of this review.. the locals love it and that's all you need to know. With that being said: I Decided to try something simple and unassuming.. just to see if their Tex-mex fair was on point... needless to say, in a city where everyone is trying to sell overpriced state side fair... luncheria was a refreshing surprise. I'm from Texas and I will say this.. if you've ever had food from a small mom and pop operation along the border.. this is the place that will remind you of home. Terrible terrible terrible We showed up just as they opened. No one was there and server only had my group which was about 8 people. They want you to order at the bar which is fine... we placed our order and the food came out suspiciously quick.... I ordered a salad with chicken. I got a styrofoam plate with what looked like some salad out of a bag with some heated up pre made shredded chicken. We then had to get up again to grab our food since our server was just so busy serving no one else... I don't recommend based on my experience. read more

It's hard to say what the best part of the restaurant is, the food or Lenny. Upon solemn consideration I'm giving the edge to Lenny. He's funny and just a great host that really made this dinner visit special for my family and me. That said, first out the best queso dip I've had in life. The drinks were great, too. Two of us had the sangria but the other party members got margaritas and were very happy with them, too. We are visiting the island for two weeks but there will be so least one more visit before we, sadly, leave. We happened upon this place by chance and would recommend it to anyone who wants a good meal, reasonable price, and great atmosphere and wonderful host. Here's the backstory, Me and my wife came to the island for her birthday for a week. We were casually strolling along the strip when we saw the $2.50 margaritas sign which led us into luncheria. The scenery was beautiful and the workers was great and the FOOD is amazing. So good that we went every single day of our trip!!!! I can't believe people prefer savant of this. I must warn you though, please do not consume the margaritas near an open flame or items that may spark. Dangerous! As a Texan I didn't expect much but glad we tried this place. The margarita was impressive and, thankfully, strong!!! We split the chicken nachos - wow really tasty! We dropped in on this place unannounced because our reservation across the street was deemed invalid. Louie was incredibly gracious and helpful. He didn't insert himself into conversation, but once we engaged him, he was fun, talkative, and helpful - genuinely concerned that we enjoy the island he so clearly loves. The food was simply incredible. The doubled up taco seemed excessive, but a few of us decided to try it... We're on vacation. Why not. Do. It. It was fantastic. And then we kept putting more orders in because the food was so dang good. Louie took it in stride and seemed to enjoy the fact that we were so happy with the food and service. Closest thing to Mexican food on the island, but it's not that close! Semi-fast food. No table service, usually. Open air seating. Most tables have umbrellas. Nice, relaxing setting. Food is actually quite good but not, repeat not, spicy. They do have help-yourself sides of a mild, medium and hot salsa of sorts. Also jalapenos, the soggy, canned kind are usually available. Ask for them if they're not already out with the other condiments. The crispy tacos they serve are covered with what seems to be Italian salad dressing. Doesn't hurt the taste any but they become soggy quite quickly. Some of us order specifying "hold the dressing" to retain the crispy taco texture. Don't bother with the teaser Margaritas. Bite the bullet and get the 5 dollar ones. Beer is 3 dollars, like most real restaurants on the island. They offer a Sangria, too, but don't recall ever trying it. **UPDATE 9/6/09**- Went here last Friday because I was starving and the service was blah, I asked for refried beans and they gave me black beans! I said I wanted two enchiladas and beans, you would think they would put it all on the same plate...NOOOOO, 3 seperate plates with sauce leaking all over in my TO GO bag. Think I will stop frequenting for a few months. As Al J. said before me Luncheria is as close as I can get to Mexican food on island without putting on my apron and whipping up my own batch or carnitas, sopapilas, enchiladas and margaritas as home. Its actually too hot for that right now so Luncheria will have to do. This cool chill out place is located in the a courtyard in Christiansted town. Lenny, the owner, is super cool and very friendly. From time to time he tops off my Strawberry Margarita with a shot of two of extra tequila. The food here is ok, the things that stand out to me are the Shredded Chicken Taco Salad and Enchilads...the chicken is slow-cooked and simmered in a yummy sauce which Lenny concocted himself. What Luncheria loses points on with me is the fact that they don't have Mexican rice! Here at Luncheria your entree is served with Brown Rice and Refried Beans...once again, it goes without saying that I judge places like this on the calibre of the Mexican Rice and Refried beans, which is hard to here so I have to take points off for that. I've complained to Lenny several times that I can't consider his joint an authentic Mexican joint because there's no Mexican rice! I doubt he'll change it, because apparently no one else has a problem with it...and they don't put cheese on the refried beans! Ugh! Am I asking for too much?!? On a high note, the $5 Margaritas are HUGE and the regular one is good but the Strawberry ones are GREAT! Just one leaves you with a nice good buzz, Lenny also makes a homemade fruit punch with a secret ingredient (I think its Sorrel) but I have yet to get that info out of him. I live in Texas so Mexican or Tex/Mex is a daily thing. I guess I was surprised at how "acceptable" the food was. I was not expecting true Mexican or Tex/Mex, but for my money it was pretty good. Service was quick, drinks were cold and the eating area was kind of nice. Tacos were good, queso not bad and the salsa was pretty good..price was fair for the quality and portion that we got. Nothing fancy but I will go back next month when I return to the island read more

Went for lunch the other day - had a take-out Chicken Burrito. It was just ok - I didn't like that the elements weren't combined well so I would get to the beans part of the burrito, just past the chicken, but before the rice... I want to taste it all together. I'll probably go back to try something else (tacos), and drink from the margarita machine. read more

The Good: margarita (pay the extra money for the higher end one), outdoor seating, casual atmosphere (though everyplace I found on the island is casual, so this isn't unusual), service and chatting with Lenny the owner. Could Improve: quality of food is akin to somewhere between US fast food and order and sit down type restaurant. Good enough, but if you're craving a delicious, homemade, authentic Mexican meal, wait until you get back home.
