They had fish tacos made with wahoo, which I consider the most perfect white fish in existence, so that's what we had. They were fantastic. My Sweetheart and I just had our first meal at Maria's and it was SO good!! We both got the $12 lunch special and we sat at the bar. The place was busy, friendly and the bartender, Shay, took care of us. She answered the phone, took orders at the window, made drinks and took care of the bar-all while smiling. What a treasure she is!! The restaurant is comfortable, fun and feels good. I got a cheese enchilada with green sauce, a puffy chicken tinga taco, rice and beans. My husband got two cheese enchiladas ( one red sauce, one green), rice and beans. From the photo you can see that we devoured our lunches. We will be back and the menu is extensive. I am a food columnist for Traveler's Times. Today I decided to review Maria's Cantina (St Croix), after reading and hearing several complaints. My previous visits to Maria's resulted in very expensive bills with many extras added. The food is expensive. The drinks are VERY expensive. Today was no different. I was charged .50 cents for a glass of ice. Not a big deal... I ordered hard shell taco's, and the shells were very stale. The taco's were ok, but for the price, I thought they could have been better. I have no plans of returning to this restaurant. Feels like a bit of a dive. More of a sports bar than a cantina on Sundays, but still feels cramped even with a dozen TVs. Friendly service. Mediocre guacamole. Generally good Mexican food but some strange restrictions. For example, they have a "Mexican Flag" enchiladas special with red, green, and queso sauces. Your choice of filling is beef, chicken, OR carnitas. Apparently, they can manage three different sauces but three different enchilada fillings is "too difficult." Service is pretty slow, so even the same enchilada filling with three different sauces might be too complex. However, when they finally arrived, they tasted excellent. St Croix's only Mexican restaurant. Huge menu, I usually default to the daily specials if I can't decide. Located in Gallows Bay, parking is tight during office hours 9 to 4 but spaces open up afterwards. Not a large number of tables inside, some additional tables outside. Being that I am a Mexican American and eat Mexican almost every day and live in California. I have a good grasp of what Mexican food should taste like. I was really surprised with the food at the restaurant. They do Mexican food really well. If I had to add 1 negative comment about the food. It would be that the food wasn't spicy enough for me. But I can't fault them for that since everyone has a different spice level. I'm not sure if I will ever come back to this island. But if you're reading this and want to try good Mexican food on the island, this place will not disappoint. read more

I give Maria's four stars for what it is: a slightly divey, but very good Mexican kitchen. You may have to wait for a table, or have a seat at the bar next to some semi sketchy people, but the food makes it all worthwhile. Last time I was there, I enjoyed a light lunch of chips and guacamole, and a cup of their chicken tortilla soup. I can honestly say I don't remember that I have ever had better tortilla soup! And I've spent a number of years in Arizona and California, where they really know Mexican food. On the down side, the guac was too smooth and rather tasteless, like the premade kind you get in a plastic container at the grocery. Maria's usually has specials in addition to their menu, and they have two dollar taco Tuesdays. And, they have Wi-Fi! Yes, I know, the island is getting better following the hurricanes, but good Wi-Fi is still a valuable thing. Maria's has it. If you like good Mexican food, you owe it to yourself to check out Maria's. Finally, those reviewers who complained that Maria's service was slow for their party of 25 or whatever, realize it's not a big place, and the kitchen is sized accordingly. They're not prepped to make 25 meals that all come out at once, unless they're all the same thing. Give 'em a break! read more

They also have an impressively stocked air conditioned bar with many choices of from scratch margaritas and other custom libations and cocktails. If your looking for one of the best Mexican restaurants on the island look no further. This place has some of the best Mexican cuisine I have every tasted. I got 2 beef tacos and they were delicious, my family had the enchiladas with beans and rice and it was the best they ever had. It was amazing. We got frozen lemonade, iced tea, and margaritas and they were delightful. When we first walked in the restaurant was super busy but we were seated after only 10 minutes. When you walk in this place the wonderful aromas hit your senses. There is tons of seating inside and a handful of tables outside. The patio was a great place to sit on a beautiful night. The food was fresh and delicious. I went boring and opted for tacos but they did not disappoint. The queso was delicious. I only had one frozen margarita, servers choice. Boy was I dead wrong! The staff is friendly. Miss Maria, the owner, is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Her food gives you ALL the flavor and feel of Mexico. The margaritas are the BEST and pack a punch! And if you're coming for Taco Tuesday, you better get there EARLY! This place gets packed! This is surprisingly one of the best restaurants on the island, which is interesting, since Mexican influence isn't really part of the culture here. Had a bad experience today. Ordered a simple burrito with queso and it all came out cold. The server never came back to ask how it was so I ate it and still left a good tip because it wasn't her fault. What a cute little place!! Nice patio with a fantastic breeze. Salsa was EXCELLENT!! The chips were just so so; they needed coarse salt or something. The only thing that looked different was the beef, Maria's beef was darker...so more spices right...? -chicken special: I didn't taste anything different between this taco and the normal chicken tacos back home. I only ordered this because the mango salsa sounded delicious but...I tasted no mango at all =T For some reason, they were very busy when I was there. My friend's cousin, that lives on the island, said that it's never that busy. They had to create a spot for us to sit in front of the restaurant. I felt like they forgot us a lot. We asked for some things and it took them an extremely long time to fulfill, except for drink orders. Those always came in a timely manner. But because of that lag, one of my dining companions asked for a pitcher of iced tea to reduce the amount of flagging we would have to do. They charged us for the pitcher D= And we were waiting for our orders at least an hour + after ordering and we kept asking them for chips and salsa to fill the time, that showed up on our bill too D= If you can help it, I'd really skip this place and go somewhere else. NEVER AGAIN!!! I called Maria's Cantina to make a reservation for a party of 25. Mind you we have been dying to try this restaurant based off of Yelp reviews. When we get there nobody has ordered (I was lost) and they were there for a long time. I ordered queso and chips with jalapeños (extra charge). The queso came without the jalapeños. I asked several times for chips to go with it and by the time I got chips the cheese was cold. No p! I'm not mad! Life happens! So I asked the waitress to reheat the cheese. She had a major attitude about it. Mind you everyone else either didn't get their order or it was wrong. We were understanding to a certain point because we were a large group but we didn't order an attitude and poor service. They didn't offer us water while we waited. Not to mention the mosquitoes. I simply asked the waitress to take the queso off my bill and she told me I would have to speak to the owner (no p). She was suppose to come out but never came. I'm ready to go so I asked for my bill (y did I do that) cuz it never came. I asked the owner to speak to her and she kept avoiding me. Finally, I spoke to her and told her what was going on. She proceeds to slam down her cup and tell us how needy we were and how we made reservations late. Mind you we made reservations at lunch time and no one told us we couldn't be accommodated which I found out she mentioned several times to other customers. She said she wasn't short staffed but only 3 ppl including her was working. We came to her with our concerns respectfully because we didn't want to be stereotyped as the angry black ppl which she painted us out to be. We were told by the waitress to talk to her but when we did she said we were attacking her to cause a scene in front of everyone. The food wasn't hot or good (greasy and no seasoning). Then they messed up my tacos and didn't inform me just let me wonder where they were. The list goes on and on. I hate writing poor reviews especially for minority businesses but I would want someone to tell me the honest truth. The portions for the tacos were definitely not what I expected for $16. I ordered the shrimp tacos and it only came with 2 pieces of shrimp. I also ordered other tacos and they were small as well. Being a Mexican I was disappointed and not worth it, at least not the tacos for me, I would've appreciated bigger portions. read more

Mixed feelings based on inconsistent food and service. Carnitas burrito and tacos are tasty, but chips were cold and stale. Guacamole was a bit bland, but much better when salsa was added. Cheese-dip was slightly runny and flavorless. But when mixed with chorizo and salsa, the dip was tasty. Our waitperson was not very friendly and basically had no personality. Ok so the food at Maria's is decent, but probably not going to compare with some of the other places on the island. Why the four stars then? They make (and I will argue with anyone) the best Lime in da coconut anywhere! The service is usually pretty friendly as well and it's one of the places I visit any time I'm on island. read more

Marias Cantina-A Cruzan coping strategy Although it wouldn't be my first stop back home here in St. Croix I do seem too end up here alot. Back home prolly 3.5 stars. Food is expense in St. Croix so sometimes things that normally come with your dish you have to ask for or pay for. For instance when have you ever ordered a "street taco" and had to ask for Lime as if its not normal or when you get red chili sauce on a enchilada you have to ask for more. Chips and Salsa not free. OK enough with my "mainland" problems. On Taco Tuesday its $2 for your entry level tacos. All serviceable. There are usually 2 or 3 specialty tacos usually $3 or $4 per. You pick the tortilla flour, soft corn or hard corn. There is al pastor and tinga other authentic Mexican options as well your cheddar cheese and sour cream abominations for the drunken gringos. Please drunken gringos try something new every once and while if not for you for me. I would like to add this disclaimer. Im usually only partially intoxicated or sober when I eat here because I live here so I think you can trust my reviews than the everything is great in St. Croix because I just drank 4 Cruzan Confusion style reviews. Cruzan Cufusions are where the bartender grabs 4 bottles of rum and free pours into a pint glass and adds a splash of juice. Have I mentioned a Liter of Rum is $8 here. Not the rail stuff but proper Cruzan Rum. Believe it oh pale ones. Service is always good. Free Wi-Fi. Lots of TV's. read more

Good eats! The ingredients were fresh and the flavors were pretty authentic to Mexican food. I had the Mexican tacos that came with the traditional toppings of cilantro and onions, perfect! My husband had the burrito bowl that was packed with fresh ingredients and overflowed the bowl. The salsas need a little help with finding those authentic Mexican chili and spices flavors, but they were pretty good. I asked for a side of salsa verde that was good, but needed to be a bit thicker and could use some roasted serrano peppers. It was a clean restaurant and felt pretty festive. We felt neglected from our waiter, but still had a great time. If you're looking to escape from the parking madness downtown by Company St, this place has spacious parking and is easy to find once you get into the Gallows Bay plaza area. read more
