Italian beef - Lupe's Grill
Diana L.

I have to admit, I was a tad bit skeptical when I was invited to go to lunch at a place in DeMotte called Lupe's Grill. I was expecting a Mex/American dining fare menu which, based on experience, can either be decent or eh. Lupe's grill is not in the downtown area of DeMotte. If you are headed east towards the town of Wheatfield, it is on your left (north) next to a carpet store, before the DeMotte Legion hall. Lupe's Grill did a great job on the signage - bright red sign that is large made it easy to spot. I parked on the side as the few spots in front were full and I didn't want to take up a parking space for the carpet store. My dining companions were already seated. The inside is comfortable and roomy. They already had menus and a placard for today's specials. The server (Kylee) immediately came to our table and asked if I'd like something to drink. I asked if they had unsweetened ice tea and she pleasantly and clearly explained it wasn't a fresh brew tea and provided a bit more detail. It tasted like your average Lipton lemon flavor tea and was totally fine. The menu - a basic "American Diner" fare of spaghetti (tonight's special), other pasta (today's specials), patty melt and burgers. This is what caught my eye - if you have ever been to Mexico or Little Village in Chicago, you will find some very interesting combinations on a sandwich including hamburgers and this is where Lupe stands out from an average American diner. While I didn't try it this time, I had my eye on the Dakota burger. Burger with mozzarella, ranch, pickles and jalapeno cheese poppers (you read that right). Another was a burger that included chopped hot dogs. Another one mozzarella, coleslaw and bacon topped a burger. Meals chosen - Shrimp Alfredo and Chicken Alfredo (two of the specials of the day) both with garlic bread. Italian beef (my choice). It also came with a side, I chose fries. I was pleased with the service, pleased with the overall vibe and this Italian Beef was going to either make or break my review. It comes topped with mozzarella and you can have mild or hot peppers (I chose neither), au jus on or on side (I chose on side). All three meals were generous portions. Mine.....was a monster :) When Kylee brought the meals, I knew this was a homerun. Served open faced. Fresh bread, nicely toasted, plentiful beef, plentiful mozzarella, generous side au jus (hot) and a generous portion of fries. I managed to eat 1/4 of it at most and some fries. I have a pic of this homerun sandwich. Once I post this review and it is approved I'll add it and also the menu. Kylee returned promptly to check on beverage refill needs, how the meals were and if boxes were needed. She came back once again to ask if the check needed to be split among us and it was asked in the nicest way. She then came back to check on dessert. The consensus of my two dining companions was churros. I will say now, I am not a churros fan. At all. But in for a penny, in for a pound, churros it was. They also have pie, cake, ice cream and fried cheesecake. Since we seemed have difficulty choosing what topping we wanted (whipped cream, chocolate, caramel or strawberry), she pleasantly suggested a tray with all for us. The churros were fresh and warm. The dipping choices were also warmed - if you are not looking up directions to this place by now you should be lol. It also came with ice cream. While I am still not a churros fan this was an A+++ presentation and quality so for once, on today, I was a fan and I was impressed. Lupe's Grill, you truly impressed me. I will be back. Thank you for an excellent meal and stellar service.

Shrimp dinner.

Nothing fancy but good quality. I had a tenderloin and my husband had a cheeseburger. Fries were crispy and hot.

We had the tea leaf salad, which had just the right blend of crunch and spice. The samusas were hot and flesh and the flavor of both the mohinga and coconut chicken noodle dish I had were phenomenal. And of course the service was impeccable. The owner was very friendly and accommodating. We can't wait to be back and try the tofu salad and Shan noodles next time.

I'd rate it on par, or even better, than San Francisco's Burmese options. Service was much friendlier here, that's for sure! Tawk was a delightful host...making jokes along with dish recommendations. Sadly, we gobbled up the food before I remembered to take photos. D'oh! I highly recommend the Tea Leaf salad--a Burmese staple and a real treat if you haven't had it before. Very flavorful and just a hint of spice (don't eat the sliced peppers if you're spice-adverse, but we devoured them). We also had Shan Noodles (B8). I also recommend that. A mild to medium spice level and very tasty. Generous portions. Two dishes was enough for two though I wish we had tried the spring rolls or samosas too--we might have had leftovers if we had! The restaurant itself is inviting and clean. They did a good job considering the location in a strip mall. The lighting looks nice, and the textured walls add to the inviting ambience.

Happened to order delivery here because the Thai restaurant we usually order from was closed …read more Ordered Pad woonsen with beef, rice soup and papaya salad. I've eaten at many Thai restaurants in the Chicago and surrounding suburbs. Food is usually too sweet or salty, proteins are overcooked, or give sparingly. I've come to just accept it lol. This place was the best I've seen for years! Padwoonsen - Beef was moist and perfectly seasoned not too sweet or salty. Veggies plentiful. Noodles dry (not soggy) just like it's supposed to be! Papaya salad- large portion. A little on sweet side but I asked for little spicy so probably catering to American taste which tends to be sweeter. Rice soup - got a small. rice soaked most of soup by the time it got to me. take out container was not great (styrofoam) but flavor still good. On top of that I have gluten and msg sensitivity and didn't have any issues after eating it. My go- to Thai restaurant for now on!

Our waitress greeted us and took our beverage order. Our starters were 4 Piece Crab Rangoon and 5 Piece Pot Sticker. The Crab Rangoon was super crunchy and surprisingly meaty. I loved them. The Pot Stickers were lacking in flavor. The sauces were also pretty much flavorless. For entre, I ordered Combo Woon-Sen Pad Thai, a combo with shrimp, beef, and chicken, and noodles. V ordered something very similar, with the same proteins, but with rice. Both dishes were fresh and tasty. The waitress was prompt and courteous. The restaurant was comfortable, if not high-end.

Seating was a little tight like at Phodega, but not terrible. To view menu, you scan a QR code at the table. My husband & I ordered the following: - Grilled Squid This was really good! I thought it was going to come out like little calamari rings, but it was actually a decently sized whole squid, sliced with the tentacles on the side. It was cooked perfectly as it was not chewy or rubbery. The flavor was great, especially with the paired Thai-spicy seafood sauce. - Crab Meat Fried Rice Loved that this was with real crab! & not the imitation crab. There were bits of crab meat throughout the rice and then topped with a big lump of crab meat. It came served with a lime & yummy fish sauce with fresh Thai chili's. - Bamee Noodles with BBQ Pork without broth This bowl of egg noodles had a slightly sweet flavor to it, served with a fox amount of BBQ Pork which was also nice & tender! Slurped it all up! - Jina's Fried Chicken This was good, but not anything like out of this world. It was fried chicken leg quarter, served with black sticky rice. - Sweet Sticky Rice with Mango LOVED this! It was a great way to end our meal! I loved that it came with extra sweet sauce! - Taro Tapioca in Coconut Milk Cream This was great too! It was actually a warm dessert. The menu described it as "Tapioca pearls" so I was expecting the tiny little clear boba balls, but it was cubes of like glutinous rice. Which was not bad! I liked it a lot; it reminded me of Ginataang Bilo Bilo (#iykyk if you're Filipino)! Overall, a delicious experience! We would eat here again!
