Cafe Stelios in Merrillville on Broadway was an awesome experience. It feels family owned, and that warmth really comes through the second you walk in. The atmosphere was comfortable and inviting, and I loved that they took the time to decorate so nicely for the holiday. The inside was done really well and made the whole place feel even more welcoming. The service was undeniably great. The girl handling the coffee told me "my pleasure" when I asked for a half cup on my refill, which stuck with me because it was such a small but genuine touch. Our waitress was also very easygoing and pleasant, and she made the meal that much better. The coffee was spectacular, and the food was outstanding. The waffle was absolutely magical. The atmosphere is nice and the place looks like it wants to be a solid neighborhood spot, but the execution just isn't there. Drinks came out lukewarm and lacked flavor, like they were rushed or poorly measured. Service was polite, but slow and unorganized. Nothing outright rude, just a lack of attentiveness and urgency that makes the whole experience feel sloppy. Prices don't match the quality, which is probably the biggest letdown. I'm giving it two stars instead of one because the space itself is decent and there is potential here. Stelio's is located on Broadway in Merrillville, In, and there is ample parking available. This place has changed several times since I was a kid, so I was curious to see what it would be like this time. To my surprise, I'm a fan! The restaurant is clean, and the restrooms are well maintained. Everyone was friendly and accommodating, and the food didn't disappoint either. I ordered catfish and grits, and I was pleased with my choice. The only suggestion I have is to serve the small amount of gravy on the side, and I would recommend adding cheese, butter and a little seasoning to the grits. We were in for breakfast after our workout, thirsty and hungry and were seated quickly. The cafe was emptied of the lunch crowd, now down to a few patrons and it was fairly quiet, clean, and comfortable. There was a generous selection on the menu and an experienced server provided help, directing a trainee who shortly disappeared. Hubby ordered the Stelios Combo--that was 2 eggs sunny side up, bacon, hashbrowns and two buttermilk pancakes at $15 with a Granny Smith topping extra at $2.59. I ordered the Slim Skillet that included sausage, spinach, cheese, two eggs over easy on hashbrowns with one pancake (it came with two--only wanted one) at $14.49. I'm not sure why, but the skillet food tasted a bit dry for me and was glad to have the ketchup the server left for us. Immediately obvious was that neither of us would be able to eat the bacon--well beyond crisp. Unfortunately, the egg yolks were cold, though the whites were cooked. My meal was warm (not hot). Meal portions were probably appropriate for our (senior) age, though the same meals elsewhere usually result in enough to take home. Quality level below price point. read more

For 4 meals and one coffee, nothing else. That was no where near $75 quality. Their website states this quote "WITH THE LARGEST SELECTION OF ORGANIC AND HORMONE AND ANTIBIOTIC FREE FOODS YOU'LL FIND ANYWHERE!" Which is the farthest thing from true and what actually brought me in in the first place. False advertising and very disappointing. There's nothing organic about this place. I called and spoke to the manager about my concerns and he hung up on me and refused to make it right. Passing though on our way from Indy to Chicago, we decided to stop here for a late breakfast. We were pleasantly surprised. The interior is very cute and roomier than it looks from the outside. We went with the basic breakfast and it was delicious.Everything exactly as we ordered. I had mine with sausage links and those were the tasiest I have eaten in a long time. Once again Cafe Stelio's has decorated their restaurant for Christmas. They use a LOT of figurines and window clings. They choose to use ALL white ones. They're located in Merrillville, Indiana a racially diverse town. It would be nice if the decorations represented more than one culture. Updating my review to give the fifth star. I was in the Region this past weekend and went for breakfast on Saturday morning. The service here is so good. I really like the wait staff. The woman who took care of us was friendly and professional and treated us like long-time customers (this was only our second visit since we live out of town). I ordered eggs, bacon, hashbrowns and a half order of biscuits and gravy. My partner had the pancakes, eggs, bacon, and sausage. The food was excellent. Pro-tip, if you log onto their free wifi and enter your phone number, you get a text that you show to the cashier and your coffee is free. Stopped here on the way through town - ordered a big breakfast since we weren't going to be eating again for another nine hours. I ordered the vegetable omelette - it came with green pepper, mushroom, broccoli, spinach, tomato and mozzarella cheese. There was also onion but I left it out. That came with grits and toast. The first time my wife and I came here, we were not really impressed. She got the avocado toast which she liked, but wasn't blown away by, and I got some lunch sandwich, that I can't honestly remember, but it was really bland. I could probably have made an equivalent sandwich from ingredients I already have at home. After a few months, my brother brought up Stelio's and said they have the best breakfast he's ever had. I was shocked, since we didn't have a great experience the first time. But we decided to go back and try the breakfast. And oh. My. Great aunt Nan. This truly is the greatest breakfast place I have ever been to. I don't even love breakfast the way most people do (a great sin, I know), but this place makes me want to eat breakfast three times a day. I ordered a custom omelette with sausage, bacon, and mushrooms. I would have added a couple more ingredients, but each additional food was more charge, and I didn't realize the omelette was going to be a foot long or I would have just gone for it. I paid I think $9 for an omelette I could have worn as a shin guard. It was epic. And it was amazing. Perfectly seasoned, fantastic and fresh ingredients. I was so impressed by the eggs I went to the farmhouse where they bought them and personally thanked the chickens who laid these eggs. My wife was annoyed at making the extra stop, but I thought it was important we recognized and appreciated greatness. I can't remember what my wife got that time, but I know she thought it was equally amazing. And with this visit, we entirely forgot and forgave (you're welcome) that first experience. We were back just a month or two later and I got the Attitude Skillet, which came on a bed of breakfast potatoes. I was unfamiliar with breakfast potatoes and thought it was just a pretentious way of saying hash browns, but my wife said that they were different and delicious. And oh. My. George Washington Carver. They were EXQUISITE. The layer of potatoes was topped with mushrooms, spinach, and a couple of those tasty eggs. It was great. And as a bonus, the skillet came with a side of buttermilk pancakes and real maple syrup (which usually costs $25 and the blood of a virgin per ounce). Best pancakes and syrup I've ever had, and I didn't have to shed any blood for it. In fact, the meal was a very reasonable price. My wife had the Delta Po' Boy with tater tots and creamy broccoli soup. All three parts of the meal were delicious, and tons of food for a great price. I believe we spent about $30 with tip and had enough leftovers for a second meal each. As for the service, we've never had an unpleasant experience. Even that first lunch visit our server was very sweet. Super helpful, kind, and knowledgeable servers. I have repented of my blasphemous anti-breakfast ways, and I suggest you do the same by giving Cafe Stelio's a visit. read more

Stopped here before dropping kids off at camp. Easy to find off the street and plenty of parking. The interior was very inviting - clean and decorated nice. Service was slow - we were seated in the back and couldn't see but we were told they had just taken an order of a party of 25 so there'd be a wait on our order. We ordered breakfast and burgers. Kids menu did not have cheeseburger on it so we had to order off of the adult menu. We asked for toast instead of hash browns and were told normally they didn't substitute but since it was for a kid they would. The burgers had two patties and came with a choice of soup and fries so plenty to eat. Food wasn't very hot - after waiting so long I would have expected it to be hotter. Hard to decide between 3 and 4 stars. Then again, maybe not. Food was average. Never got any coffee refills until I asked a different waitress who was trying to get away before I could stop her to ask. Was almost done with my food. Our table was right across from hers. Our waitress let us know multiple times that they were short staffed. It wasn't that bad though. Could at least check on the table once. The restaurant is very clean. Prices are average.
