I don't know how this doesn't get a perfect 5 stars. It's such a unique and exceptionally well executed experience, it's hard to find any flaws. We arrived at 9am on a cold March morning (the first day of daylight savings time -- so an hour earlier than most people would normally arrive) so we were literally the second group there for the day. This made it and exceptionally special experience because we basically had the whole cave to ourselves. Dead silent and eerie. Perhaps if there were a million school kids in there at the same time, my opinion might differ. The lighting is perfect and illuminates all of the nooks an crannies and makes it easy to appreciate how each type of formation differs subtly from another. The pamphlet they give you and the numbered stops on the pathway give a good explanation of each special place. The price is high, but it's unique and has been cooking under the earth for millions of years so it's hard to put a fair price on it. Simply put, you won't be disappointed. read more

If you love natural wonders, this place is for you! Around a mile of well-maintained, underground path takes you around stunning stalagmites and stalactites. It's a stunning cave cathedral, replete with mirrorlike pools that reflect ceiling and floor as one. This would have been an eerily magical experience if not for the swarms of loud and obnoxious children running around. I can't deduct stars for the parents but if I could, I'd give them a low score. read more

The cavern is interesting, but not for the cost. The attraction was so jam packed with people it wasn't enjoyable. This is basically a theme park, with theme park people. If you want to truly experience caverns go to a National Park; Mammoth Cave, Carlsbad or Wind Cave. read more

These formations at Shenandoah had been discovered in Aug. 13, 1878 by Andrew Campbell, his 14yr old nephew Quint and Benton Stravinsky, his photographer. The lighted cavern has stalactite and stalagmites that embody this spectacular site. We walked at our own pace and took severa pictures. Last time I went here as a child and it is amazing to see natural beauty at its form. There is more to see with this cave stretching far and wide. The wishing well is a breathetaking area, and the sound of the cavern organ. This place is a must see in Virginia. It's so beautiful! The first time I have ever been on a cavern tour-- a great experience! I was talked into going to Luray Caverns-- I was initially a bit afraid, as I am scared of the dark and of tight spaces. This experience surpassed my expectations. The cave is bigger than you would imagine, and did not leave me feeling claustrophobic at all! There were people of all ages and demographics on our tour, and the tour guide was extremely friendly. Next to the cave is a garden that is extremely fun but quite tricky-- very fun if you have extra time! You can also grab some wine and food as there is a charming looking spot right next to the cave. Good gift shop as well with cute and reasonably priced souvenirs. Pros: - Reasonable price for tour, $27 for adults, kids ages 6-12 is $14, and kids under 5 go free! -Informative tour guides - Good temperature in cave, and also very well lit - No more than a 15 minute wait to get in the cave, even on a busy day. Cons: Honestly, none-- this was a great experience, fun for kids and adults alike! This is a good place to venture through while in Virginia. This cavern is a beautiful site. There is no fee for parking just buy your ticket to walk through. So this was a self guided tour, I was glad to take my time and get an eyeful of all the stalactites and stalagmites (mouthful). As you walk through there are signs to explain what you are seeing. There was a stalactite that was translucent and was called the curtain. Very wide and long, it's amazing how these things are so sturdy. I was able to hear the great stalacpipe organ play which echos throughout all of the stalactites . It was soft music to my ears. Nature is beautiful. I enjoyed seeing the fluorescent blue pools of water and the mirror image of the stalactites in the pools of water below. There is a village center with a museum. There's a garden maze, gift shop and a car and carriage museum. As I left I had to have a lemonade and chocolate chip cookie, you know , just because, and it was yummy. Go enjoy!! read more

Beautiful to see God's hand in everything. The tour took about and hour and I was glad to have seen this. I did not like waiting in line outside to get in and getting wet with the rain. There should be more covers for problems such as this. I also did not like how they tried to sell pictures before entering and this made the line slow in the pouring rain. The new ramp beats the old steep stairs leading down into the caverns. I found the tour guide very informative and the walkway and new rails much safer than the old days. The cave itself is amazing and the organ music still very eerie. I am grateful that Luray Caverns still continue provide jobs for folks in this area. read more

It has been several years, since I last visited here with my family. We had to wait a long time on a long line outside in the hot summer time years ago. Luray recently opened a new $3 million covered inclined entrance ramp, which is much more pleasant and effective with crowd control than the last time we visited. We were able to purchase our tickets after a short wait on line. Tickets are now $28 for adults, $25 for seniors and $15 for children above a certain age. Children under a certain age are free. Audio tours for both adults and children are also available for only $5 each. The audio for children is more easily understood by children. The tour was much more enjoyable this time than the last time due to our shorter wait time. I will probably return here again after several more years. After the cavern tour we also enjoyed the adjacent carriage museum and purchased some home made fudge as usual from the adjacent shop. We will definitely return here again. read more

This was the most unenjoyable place I've ever been, there was so many people that shoved into one cave, it was loud, everyone was rushing through so we didn't even get to actual enjoy it. There wasn't much open in the area on a Sunday so we made the trek to Luray Caverns. Signs for miles up to the actual exit. Tickets cost about $28 for an adult ticket, $25 for senior (no one had mentioned the BoGo 50% off ticket with a Giant/Martins card). The whole place was definitely a tourist trap. Waves of people shuffling through. They had posted guides on our visit meaning they were stationary and the visitors moved from one guide to the next. My family and I visited the caverns during our spring break. We had the absolute best time! If you have never seen caverns before, these are my #1 recommendation. Truly a place of amazing, natural beauty. Not only do they have the spectacular caverns, all the included activities and museums were great! They even have extra activities, pay separately from the attraction tickets, and those were great! The whole experience is one that we will never forget and will totally do again! The entire staff were helpful and friendly. But the real friendliness and super extra helpfulness came after we left and were already back home. I realized that I did not purchase enough souvenirs for some of our friends and called them to ask what I could do. I was put in touch with Rikki Miller and to say she went above and beyond is an understatement. She assisted me in obtaining what I wanted and kept in touch with me until she was able to attain the shipping cost for me along with my total purchase amount. She made this visitor extremely happy. 5 star caverns... 1 star lines... The cafe had a limited menu of simple foods. Shockingly the Ham and Grilled Cheese sandwich was delicious and the chili was edible too with large chunks of ground beef. Food: One original Grilled Cheese Sandwich; one Ham and Grilled Cheese Sandwich; one Chili, and a bottled water = $17. Line to buy tickets: The lines to buy tickets were crazy long and stagnant! Luckily my wife simply jumped online and purchased two adult tickets for $28 each ($56 total for admission, not including the food I mentioned; kids under 6 years old are free). After buying the tickets online we simply went in the door, no line no wait, for people with tickets. Inside the Cavern: It was as expected in regards to tight spaces, wet floors, somewhat dim lighting in areas, and water dripping on you from the ceiling, after all it's a cave. However, it's very clear that they are all about the Benjamin's at Luray Caverns because the cram so many people into the tight spaces of the cave, that it's a safety Hazard. Nobody moving, everyone standing in everyone's way... it was like being in bumper to bumper traffic on the Jersey Turnpike with no exits. As a mater of fact, my wife and I joked that it was like being in an IKEA store... once you are in, you are stuck, the only way out is to fight the crowd. Being a first responder, I knew right away that craning that many people into a tiny crowded space with no exit is the recipe for disaster. Thank God, that didn't become an issue today but if the power goes out and that many people start pushing and stampeding, there will be injuries at the very least. Tips: Wear tennis shoes, not flip flops or sandals. Wear a hat. If you have a small child, I'd use a body carrier not a stroller (I used a hiking backpack style baby carrier) Bring water, a snack, small pocket/purse flashlight just in case. No cell signal in the cave. Eat before you come. Dogs were welcomed. Restroom lines were long and crazy, pee before you come. ; ) Admission tickets included two museums. Garden maze on site! If you are cold natured, bring a light jacket or sweater in the summer and. Big jacket in the winter. It's about 50-60 degrees down there. I'm warm natured and it was not cold to me in July, felt good actually. read more

I was so excited to come back to Luray. It has been about 10 years since my last visit and this time it was a different kind of experience since I had kids with me. They have a new ramp that is wheel chair and stroller friendly. I was so excited to hear this! It made it so easy to navigate. We really enjoyed our time here and was really impressed with all the different types of unique formations that we saw. I enjoyed the self guided tour and we had such a fun time. The admission ticket also included the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, Shenandoah Heritage Village, and Toy Town Junction. There are also other activities like gem mining, garden maze and rope adventure park, which cost extra. They also have a cafe, restaurant and a gift shop. You can pretty much spend your entire day here. I would definitely recommend it to others and I might come back again in a few years! read more

The new visitors' center and cave entrance is very well done, and makes the caverns more readily accessible to all visitors. The cave itself? What can I say? It's a cave. I've been to dozens, and every one is unique and beautiful. There are a handful of universal features- stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, "cave bacon" - and all of these are well represented in Luray. They also have a calcite column known as Pluto's Ghost, one of the best "fried egg" formations I've ever seen, and the Saracen's Tent, which National Geographic says is the best example of flowstone drapery in the world. The solenoid-powered "stalacpipe organ" is disappointing- the sound quality is terrible, more like a cyborg farting than an organ. Our guide gave pretty much the same tour that every kid who works in a cave gives: a memorized geological spiel with a few historic nuggets and some corny rock puns thrown in. At least, as far as I could hear her- we had the misfortune of exploring this subterranean wonderland with a gaggle of noisy cretins who insisted on touching everything they were told not to and never ever shut up. The admission is steep- about $85 for the three of us- but it includes several small museums on the grounds, including the Car and Carriage Museum, the Luray Valley Museum, and the old toy museum. The cars and carriages are an exceptional collection of unique vehicles including a 1908 Baker electric car and Rudolf Valentino's custom Rolls Royce. The Luray Valley Museum is typical of small museums- some neat pieces, some old junk, and most of it not particularly labeled. The toy museum was neat, and spanned the 20th century, with a few 19th century pieces. Again, the labeling was pretty hit-or-miss. read more

Tip 1: if you use extremely bright flash photography, maybe trail behind at the end of the group. Its dark--no one wants your camera flash going off within 2 feet of their eyes. Tip 2: if you're trying to be Instagram worthy, maybe trail behind at the end of the group instead of stopping and holding people up every few minutes. Tip 3: its wet! Spent mid morning/early afternoon on a Tuesday at Luray Caverns. Pictures don't do this natural beauty justice. The brochure that's provided with descriptions was super helpful and added to the experience during our self guided walking tour. Also, for those traveling with medium to larger pups. If you ask, and it's available...they have crates that you can put your dogs in while you complete the caverns. The crates were large enough for my English mastiff and black lab. They were also kept in an air conditioned room with staff that obviously enjoyed our dogs company. We only did the caverns tour and not the other sites that were included with the tickets as we were being mindful regarding our dogs. Overall, great experience...and for someone that's traveling with dogs, this made our experience that much better! We definitely would love to come back next time we are around. read more

Comparing to other great caverns such as Carlsbad, TX, the scale was smaller, but there was tour guide with fruitful knowledge and professional manner paid attention to tourists' safety for each group. My son and I I visited Luray caverns, and they were absolutely magnificent and spectacular. I felt this should be listed as one of the wonders of the world, it was an absolutely incredible world below us, and we felt so lucky that we were able to see it. Everyone was very friendly. The walk underneath the Caverns was about 1.5 miles, and it went deeper deeper and deeper. But we did not feel scared of claustrophobic, it was very well ventilated, there was perfect lighting, handrails and very helpful attendants. We can't wait to come back again, this time with mom and our younger son. We highly recommend this place for anyone who is passing through the area, and to be honest, we feel it's worth special trip just to see it. read more

We took a guided tour and enjoyed our time with our two small children (4 and 6). We thought we would need boots for the caverns, but it was paved and kid-friendly all the way. We walked for about a mile inside and the tour lasted about an hour. The guide went so far as to dress up in a period piece which added to the fun! My family had a great time here. There was plenty to see during this tour. Once you show your tickets you are instructed to walk down a flight of stairs. When you reach the bottom you start to see all of the underground rock formations which are pretty amazing when you think it took millions of years for their creation. There are very many different rock formations below and plenty of photo opportunities. My favorite spots were the reflecting lake and the wishing well. The only drawback is that I believe it's overpriced for what it is. Overall, it is a nice tour that takes between 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 hours. read more

Luray Caverns are apparently the largest and most popular caverns in Eastern America, and it's quite a natural wonder. Definitely a memorable experience. Prices are as follows: $28 for adults, $25 for seniors (62+), children $15 (6-12). Of note, if you have a Giant or Martin's BonusCard, it's 50% off for the second adult ticket. You can carry small pets on the tour. Also, I have noticed that some people don't pay attention to their young children, so their kids misbehaved and kept touching the stalagmites, subsequently damaging them with their skin oil. These structures take thousands/millions of years to form and deserve more than our respect to preserve them. It was discovered by a group of 5 men, including a teenager, in 1878. It's located in the Shenandoah Valley, so you can also go hiking at the Shenandoah National Park in the area as well. The caverns are breathtaking, with many different named sections, many of which I forgot or did not catch what the tour guide said. You can pay extra to have a set of earphones for a more guided tour. What stood out to me was the grand scale of it all, and to think that stalactites grow on average about less than 1 cm every 100 years, and it is still an actively growing cave with deposit rate of approximately 16 cubic cm every 120 years. The Dream Lake was quite a sight to behold. The optical illusion created by the crystal clear water makes it seem bottomless, with perfect reflection of the columns of stalactites. The deepest point is actually only 20 inches deep. The Great Stalacpipe Organ is just as incredible. It's a lithophone that works like a pipe organ from the tapping of the stalactites of various sizes, and operated by a console. read more

Beautiful cavern that is treated more like an amusement park attraction at Disney World than a natural wonder. Tickets are sold and the line moves faster than you think. Seems like they are just trying to get as many people in as possible. The young staff is not spread out within the cavern to keep groups moving, or keep individuals on the path. They are usually crowded up in their own groups talking, while you deal with choke points (where people are not moving), or being photo bomb by other guest (who are jumping on the stalagmite, pillars), or having children urinate in a corner. The "Do Not Touch"signs are for show and not enforced. The $80 spent to see this, felt like a waste. The cavern is beautiful, just not appreciated. read more

Fun factor - 4/5 Worth the Price factor - 3/5 The best thing about Luray is that it really appeals to all ages. My wife and I are in our mid-30s, we took my brother who is in his early 30s, my sister who is 14, and our two kids 6 and 2 and all of them had a pretty good time. Three stars really comes because of the price. For a general ticket, you get a tour of the caverns and access to three small museums (history, toys, and cars). For the 4 of us and a kid (our daughter was free), it was about $100 and that was with a discount. That's just a tad pricey in my opinion. That becomes even more pricey when you consider they have a hedge maze and ropes course for additional fees (and so many possible souvenirs). The caverns themselves are very nice and pristine. It is about as far as you can get from caving while being in the cave. The walkways are paved, they have altered the cave for accessibility, strewn lights about it, and there's even a really cool organ (that plays notes on the stalactites). All very cool (which makes this cave in particular appropriate for all ages). The guide was also incredibly knowledgeable, answering questions from the mundane to the complex with confidence and in an easy to understand and approachable manner. I will also recommend the car museum. I don't really care for cars and even I was impressed. They have Bugatis, Lotuses, and pre Model-T Fords amongst many others. If you really love or know cars, I assume this will blow you away. read more

Not my first stalactite cave... but this had the best formations I've seen... I liked the mirror pool and the cathedral organ ... was my fav kinda "rock" music. The caves can get pretty crowded depending if you visit during holiday season... takes 3 hours for the whole trip...be prepared to wait long lines to get into the cave... if you have someone to hold your spot in line you can visit the vintage car & carriage museum and stone museum in the meantime. It's a slow paced guided tour although you can purchase headphones to guide you as well...the guides take you in groups of 20-30 ... so keep up if you want information..if your in the tail end you won't be able to hear anything. Ticket prices are $27 for adults and $14 for kids 6 and above... includes entry into the museums and a coupon for a free rock(seriously skip it).they also have hedge maze and rope adventures for an additional charge. read more

What a cool place! We arrived when they first opened which was perfect timing. It was not crowded at all and we were able to start our walk through the caverns peacefully. However, my son had to go "potty" and we walked out and came back and when we did, it all of a sudden became crowded. It became more difficult to keep social distance and there were some kids running around touching the caverns, which they were not supposed to do, and this was annoying. However, since the place is so beautiful and special I have to give it 5 stars. It is a big pricey but definitely worth it! read more
