This was, without question, the worst salon experience I've ever had…read more I went to Blush Hair Salon with a photo of the haircut and color I wanted. Jen told me the only way to achieve the look was with a balayage, bringing the total to $365. I explained that $365 was outside my budget. I also explained that I understood it wouldn't look exactly like the photo without balayage, but I wanted to get as close as possible by matching the highlight and lowlight colors while keeping my existing base color. I wasn't asking for perfection--I was asking for the closest result within my budget. Instead of working with me, Jen refused to do the color because she said it wouldn't achieve the exact look. At that point, I decided I would at least get the haircut since I was already there. Unfortunately, the haircut looked nothing like the inspiration photo. The picture had textured, choppy layers, movement, and curtain bangs. My haircut had very little layering and a completely different shape. The owner eventually stepped in and agreed to do highlights and lowlights, but he also refused to use the colors I requested. He told me the blonde in the photo was "too white" and the darker pieces were "too dark," and instead chose colors that he felt would look better. What bothered me most wasn't that they couldn't duplicate the picture perfectly. It was that every compromise I suggested was dismissed. Both the stylist and the owner decided what they thought I should have instead of listening to what I was asking for. People walk into salons every day requesting fashion colors like pink, purple, blue, or green, and stylists help them achieve the look they want. I wasn't asking for anything unrealistic. I was asking for blonde highlights and lowlights in the tones shown in my inspiration photo, adjusted to fit my budget. Instead, I was repeatedly told no and ultimately given what someone else thought looked best. The final color isn't terrible, but that's not the point. When I pay for a service, I expect to be listened to. I left feeling frustrated, unheard, and incredibly disappointed. In all my years of getting my hair done, I have never experienced so much resistance over simply trying to achieve a look I wanted within a budget.
