I called to make an appointment for crochet and was told to come in at 0830. I arrived a little before 0830 and no one was there. I waited around for a bit and two people finally arrived at 0900. They weren't friendly or apologetic about being late. Upon entering the salon they put headphones in and listened to music as they took their time getting the store ready. They did not say good morning, ask who my appointment was with, or welcome me. Once the stylist began doing my hair I had to constantly ask her to not braid too tight and she would respond how she wasn't. As the customer and person who can feel the tension I found this to be an inappropriate response. Upon completion of my hair I could not move my eyebrows or make any facial expressions. Looking into the mirror I could see the pulling of each and every strand and my scalp buckling. It was already frustrating that they were late, pulled my hair too tight, but the end result did not look good or professional either. Because she pulled/braided every single piece of hair back so tight the crochet finished product looked like I had a wig on. The style looked very unnatural due to her pulling back my entire hairline. I have worn crochet many times before but noticed they braid yarn into your hair and they double knot the hair very tight. I believe this will be a challenge trying to take it out. I noticed on another review someone relayed the challenges of taking out their crochet as well. They use to braid good but now with the new set of folks and owner..NO!!! I called to make an appointment, asked for butt length SINGLES with square parts, got colored hair so I needed my hair tucked and showed up with my own braiding hair, blow dryer with comb because they infamous for using dirty stuff! I paid $220 and DID NOT get butt length and the lady acted like it was too difficult to tuck my hair! So annoying!!! Then she swept the floor and cleaned the bottom of the broom with her hands and emptied trash cans then preceded to try and touch back in my hair, without washing her hands! They never wash their hands or hair tools, they just go from head to head. You have to watch this place because they don't practice cleanliness standards. PLUS --I'm not happy about my braids! 1.) Instead of feeding in more hair to achieve the length I asked for she tried to stretch the strand of braiding hair and never feed in more hair, just to save on time! Like don't tell me you can do it but you can't! 2.) I dislike that you can ask or inquiry prior to making appointment and they tell you yes to get you there, yet don't listen or rush through your braids. 3.) Sloppy messy braids and no regard for your natural hair like don't rip through my hair roughly while attempting to use that dirty hair dryer (they use on EVERYBODY). ***Their yellow blow dryer used in that shop is NEVER disinfected or clean in fact you can SEE the DIRT build up visible on dryer comb teeth and they'll just keep using it, switching it from head to head transferring dirt without cleaning it between hairdos or customers... that literally takes 2 min TO CLEAN HAIR TOOLS... it's so disgusting how nasty not to! It would make sense to invest in multiple hair dryers because you care about your customers and business NOPE they got only "ONE" dirty blower dryer with a dirty blower dryer comb which is used on everyone! This why I brought my own there as they don't care they will just use DIRTY combs, DIRTY blow dryers, and DIRTY towels on your hair AND ALL that's not hygienic or safe. Combs never in barbicide which cost $8.00 to place hair tools in for hygienic purposes. Towels are not clean so they just will throw a dirty towel on your head too. UH NO!! Be careful. I'm never going back here. Avoid and take your time to find a good braiding salon that's worth it. read more

I LOVE Lydia's!! I have been getting my hair braided (of and on) for at least 25 years. So I know what I like and don't like. I remember days of braids taking 12 hours and I swore I would never do it again. But over time I found much faster braiders. I also discovered that many shops like to use multiple people on a single person. This has always been a challenge for me because I could tell which braids had been done by which people, because they would look different. I moved to the DMV about two years ago and thought I had found a shop, but she usually didn't start my service until at least three hours after I arrived and I finally had to look for someone new. That's when I came across Lydia's. At Lydia's there are often multiple people on your head at once, but they are really good at giving it a uniform look and feel. I have never been there for more than 5 1/2 hours and I fluctuate between box braids and Senegalese twists. The ladies are friendly and fun to chat with. Like many shops they will stop, mid-service to eat, but there is always someone available to jump right in so it does not change the time you are in the shop. The only caveat to this has to do with your edges. You won't always realize when the women have swapped out, but some of them make the braids around the edges much tighter and I have had to stop them before because the braids were too tight and a much different tightness from another section of my head. The only thing that makes me uncomfortable at Lydia's is the fact that every time I've gone, there comes a time that one of the ladies goes to the middle of the shop floor and gives a sermonette about how we are all bound for hell and that we need to be saved. I don't have a problem with their faith. I can't even say that I disagree. However, I do try to respect the views of everyone and I don't like not having the option of not participating because I am sitting in the shop with no where to go. In my opinion, this is a smaller inconvenience and not a reason that I would stop going to the shop. I would definitely recommend Lydia's for a wonderful braiding experience. read more

I've gone here about 3 or 4 times so far and I will keep coming back! My expectations were low due to experiences in other shops in the area. I love Lydia's because these ladies are fast! I just got done on a Saturday and had only one braided but she got me done in about 5 hours, usually they have two people on my hair and I'm done in about 3.5 to 4hrs but for one braider on a busy Saturday I'll take it!! There was I believe a walk in and they got her box braids done in a coupe hours. I book an appointment usually a week in advance because due to work I can only come on weekends and I know they get busy. Prices here are on par with the area to slightly higher (maybe $10 - $20 more than typical) but trust me it's well worth it because of the time you save and the GREAT quality of work. I don't have braids falling out at embarrassing times either during the weeks that follow. Also, I HAVE to point out that they know how to comb natural hair! They don't yank and pull on my hard to comb natural hair like a lot of other places do or use tiny combs to tame the beast. I was super hesitant going anywhere in Woodbridge to get my hair braided. I had only gone to one place in MD for years but I recently moved to Woodbridge. I was referred to this shop by a family friend and I was pleasantly surprised. I love my hair and it doesn't hurt! Also I got long box braids (down to my waist almost) and it only took 4 1/2 hours! I had crochet braids done at another salon. I HATED them. I ended up with a lions mane of hair around my face. There was nothing I could do to pull it back and fix it. I immediately began looking for another shop to fix that mess. It was 5:30 on a Fri so I wasn't very hopeful. Then Lydia said come now. When I got there she was finishing up another lady's crochet braids and they looked so nice. As soon as they saw my underlying braid pattern she said it will have to come out and be redone completely. I showed her the same pictures of what I wanted. I have been hesitant to get my hair braided in Virginia... it's my experience that DC/VA salons do permed hair well and MD salons do braids well. That being said, I had a great experience at Lydia's. The owner is very sweet and efficient. She runs the shop well. Clients were getting done quickly and beautifully. I was also impressed with the wide range of styles they are able to do (cornrows, sew ins, wash and color, wig installation, braids, etc). I saw all of those styles done while I got my box braids put in and they came out wonderfully. My hair? Not too tight. Looks good. Exactly what I asked for. CLEAN SHOP. 2 or 3 people will do your hair at a time which makes it go faster. I had long, medium sized box braids done in 4 hours. Very impressed for a last minute (I called same day, so basically can be considered a walk in) Saturday appointment and I will continue to use this salon for my braids. read more

Box Braids: If I could give zero stars I would. Today I returned to this salon to express my concerns about my hair coming out of the braids and my hair coming out completely with the braids. I have healthy hair that is managed very well. A few braids started to come out and take my hair with it. I brought the braids back to this salon with me and asked for at least half of my money back. I had some micro braids done here awhile back. At any given time there was 1-2 braiders working away --- I wasn't really assigned a stylist. Lydia started my hair, then someone else took over, then a second new stylist joined in. All-in-all, after about 5.5 hours my braids were done. No braids "slipped" away during the two months I had the style. I did make an appointment, but I don't think it helped in me ensuring a certain stylist would be working on my hair. So I called Lydia's and they told me I could come next day at 8AM... Less than 12 hours after my other appointment was cancelled! This was my first time getting Marley twists and I knew I had an idea of how I wanted them to come out and they all did such a great job! The women here are very nice and friendly and I like the vibe of the shop. However, I left slightly disappointed. It was my first time getting crochet braids and I brought my own hair (Trendytresses1.com). She couldn't install it bc it was super silky, the way she braided my hair and stitched in my hair made a super difficult to take out. Also bc they weren't familiar with the texture the way it was installed was a mess. I couldn't wait to take it out bc I wasn't satisfied with how my hair was cut. Again super friendly ladies love the shop and they did great work on others hair. It's just my personal experience wasn't that great.
