OMG I'm so glad I found Tracy! I've been trying to find a stylist I can stick with for years (after my regular stylist retired). Tracy was recommended to my by a stylist in Stafford (where I live) since I wanted a short cut. I called Tracy Monday and was able to get an appointment that Thursday (today in fact!). I was at the counter for a moment when I came in, no one manning the counter, but a young lady (Tracy's daughter turned out) directed me to Tracy's room when I told her who I was there to see. The salon a pretty big space with different areas for stylist, barber and a braider. It was pretty quiet. I liked that it was open and you didn't feel like you were on top of people regardless of what area you were in. Tracy's room isn't huge but even with people in each chair, I didn't feel claustrophobic. I arrived about 10 mins early and she was finishing up with a client. I waited and we all chatted until she was ready for me. My appointment was at 1p so we started about 1:15 or so. Not much wait and the convo was nice so I didn't mind. I came in for a relaxer and a cut. As you can see in the pic I went short, so it was really important for me to find someone who could do a great short cut. Tracy really worked fast. I was amazed. She had my hair cut and the relaxer in I know in less than an hour. And I am not complaining about that at all. Tracy and her daughter worked as a team with Tracy doing my cut and relaxer and her daughter basing my scalp, shampoo and wrap set. I have never had my hair shampooed with a brush before. I had to ask what it was because I knew it wasn't fingers. It was ok. Usually, I don't want too much friction after a relaxer so I think next time I'll skip it. But I think most people would enjoy it. After my wrap and dryer time, Tracy finished up my cut and styled my hair. I was so happy with the results. It was exactly what I wanted. She also didn't charge an arm and a leg either. I will definitely stick with Tracy from here on out. read more

So I just moved to area from MD. Today was my first time at this salon, my stylist was Mary. I needed a simple deep conditioner (sat under the dryer for like 30 minutes) never have I ever sat that long under a dryer for a deep conditioner. I eventually had to get up and get her. I then asked for a blow out and flat ironed. Well my hair turned out average I could have kept my $65 and did my own hair. I'm so unhappy that I have to come home and redo my hair. The sad part is my hair is easy to work with I could have went to a Dominican salon and gotten extremely better results. I'm not sure if I'll ever return back but if I'll do I'll be requesting a different stylist. Oh and to top it off at the end of my service she says "I don't accept cards you can go to 7/11 and get money" well my question is in this day in age who doesn't accept cards and second why wasn't this mentioned when I called and made a appointment. I would like to preface this review by saying this is not a reflection of the whole salon, merely a review of the hairstylist, Mary, I was suppose to have a service with. Today I had an appointment scheduled at 6:00am for box braids, that I had booked on Wednesday, and she told me she has the braiding hair there. So I get up at 4:30 am, leave at 5:40 am and arrive at 5:58 am. I'm greeted by the other hairstylists that are already there, all the hairstylists are all very nice. I'm waiting and waiting with no call from my hairstylist until 6:30 am. She calls me and asks me the time of my appointment, and I say we scheduled for 6:00 am. She says "I'm sorry I'm on my way." While she is already 30 minutes late. She does not arrive until 7:00 am. A whole hour after my appointment was scheduled. Unacceptable. She gets in and greets everyone and sits in the back for about 5-10 minutes. Unacceptable. Once she comes back to the floor, she asks me what colour and style of braids that I would like. So I show her a picture and she tells me she doesn't have the colour I wanted. She says she should have asked me to send her a picture before my appointment, so she would know what colours to get. And after I reiterated what I wanted, she made no attempt to go get the materials/products required. So she's an hour late, and she can't provide the service I want. So I simply walk out. I felt the stylist was unprofessional, uncaring of my time, and overall not prepared. I will not be going back. This was my first impression and last opportunity with this salon. read more

After a terrible experience at Master Salons with Laryse that led to crazy damage on my hair because of a bad relaxer, I needed a new stylist. I asked around and multiple people recommended Toya. Of course I was skeptical because you don't let just anybody do your hair. Although I think $85 is a lot for a relaxer she and the relaxers are WONDERFUL! While doing your hair she keeps you occupied with conversation and let's you know EVERYTHING she's doing, what's she's using, and why she chose that specific product for your hair. So this is a long overdue review. I was in desperate need of a blowout preparing for a trip I was taking. I had searched salons that specialized in Dominican blowouts since they are the healthiest option for my natural 4a/4b hair. My hair is extremely coily and while thick my individual strands are very fine. My mother suggested I go to Sensational Stylez and ask for Varonica to do my hair. I was very reluctant because my experience with stylists had not been great in the past. But mother knows best! So I scheduled an appointment and went in with my fingers crossed. As Varonica is going over the various methods to which she straightens hair I see Dominican styled blow outs on the list. I asked her why is was labeled "style" and not just a regular Dominican blowout. She explained that her method places less stress and direct heat on the hair and so it wasn't a true Dominican blowout. I automatically opted for it. Let me say that Varonica did an EXCELLENT job on my hair she knew what she was doing and listened to all of my concerns. My hair turned out great! It had so much body and movement and lasted for a good week (without me really tending to it). If you're looking for a stylist that knows how to care for natural hair. Do Not go to Veronica!!! I went to Sensational Stylz and spoke to Veronica on a couple of occasions before I went and got my hair done. I showed her pictures of the hairstyle that I wanted but in particular how I wanted it cut. I also asked her what was the price of her doing my hair she said $125.00. She agreed to the picture of the hairstyle, I wanted and said that she could do the quick weave style that way. When I showed up to my scheduled appointment I was like 5 minutes late only to discover when I got there Veronica was late by like 10-15 minutes. So she proceeds to take out my previous braids which were underneath my wig. Anyway once she got to cutting and styling the quick weave it was obvious to me that the cut was no where close to the picture I had shown her. When I mentioned it she copped and attitude immediately like right away saying crazy shit like why was I blowing and looking at my hair. I told her because I could and then she tells me that the cut wasn't going to look like the photo and that basically she couldn't get it to look like the photo. I felt like at this point we were were sparing back in forth about how she perceived how my actions were instead being professional and focusing on my hair. At one point she said to me let me hurry up and get you outta here. When I mentioned I would write a review she got very defensive and try to get another hair stylist there involved. Veronica in my perception has very low self esteem, is very defensive and has an over all shitty attitude to be a hair stylist. When she finished my hair and I went to pay her she told me it would be an additional $25.00 dollars for taking out my braids when I asked her the cost in the beginning for a total of $150.00 Veronica comes off like she's off her rocker a little bit (mentally not wrapped tight). Please do your research with hair stylist. I'm not knocking Sensational Stylz or the other beauticians because those ladies do some good work. I am saying I was not happy with the attitude and treatment I received from Veronica that was my first visit to the shop. It was a horrible experience. read more

I've been to Mary at Sensational Stylz. I was a long time client of hers I had went to her for years as she came recommended by a friend when I was new to the area. My last encounter with her was horrible and her professionalism was extremely poor. She stopped doing my hair to take a call from a friend and he came to the salon. She went outside to talk to him. Apparently they were arguing as she came back in upset and talking about the ordeal. She also would change the agreed upon price once I sat in her chair saying my hair is thick so it's going to cost an extra $20. The very last time she did my hair I wasn't satisfied with the style and I messaged her about it she said that I had to let her know within 24 hours although it had only been a couple of days. If she treats someone who's been coming to her for a while now how is she treating those that are NEW! She needs to watch how she talks to customers and be more professional. Unbelievably rude. The sign was flashing open so my family and I decided to swing by for everyone to get their hair done. As we were approaching we noticed two people that worked there yelling and swing at each their very aggressively. As I started to open the door I was shock to find them actually screaming and yelling. I thought before I proceed to walk in with my children I should simply voice out "are you open?" because nobody even acknowledged that the front door opened. I went into today as a walk-in for a big chop hair cut, I'm starting fresh again. The only person in the store was Varonica and she did a wonderful consultation with me, she advised me that she had 15 years of experience. She listened to me, allowed me to show her pictures, but she let me know what I could do or couldn't do with the short length of my hair. She was very patient and at the end I decided to let her do "her thing". Wow!! I was pleasantly surprised and VERY happy at the way she cut my hair. The salon was very spacious and large inside. I am from Baltimore and was in Virginia for the day and had a last minute event to attend. I was not going to be able to go to my regular nail technician back home so I walked into Sensational Stylz and try to see if I could score an appointment! And there was JOY ... Sweet as can be ! She was wrapping up an appointment and was kind enough to take me in! Before I tell you how amazing she is I would like to state that I am very hard to please. I have had horrific experience in the past and I was very sceptic about this ... Joy and I talked about what I needed done and what style I had in mind, she even offered her expert advice and OH! Boy she did not disappoint !! My nails looked better than my "go to" nail tech in Baltimore ! Her lines and designs are clean/sharp, my nails lasted and looked good for a long time (minus re growth) she is quick but efficient and on top of that ... What a great conversation ! She is funny, sweet and very patient ! I think she does not usually take walk ins unless she is already there so if you happen to be in the neighborhood and want appointment with Joy I would suggest booking in advance ! So my review is good and bad. The good is I loved the way my hair turned out. I was in and out within 30-40 minutes. I went in for a wash/trim/blow dry/flatiron. I usually do my hair myself but I needed my ends cut and was referred to this salon so I decided to give it a try. Well for a simple trim of my ends and a straighten it cost $80 plus tip. That's outrageous. I'm from up north where that would cost 30 bucks. 80 dollars for what? I have really good textured hair. Straight/loose curl wave pattern hair. And it's really easy to manage. Thanks to hair stylist Varonica, I have to wear a wig until my hair grows back. I trusted Varonica to shape my natural curls and not give me a full blown haircut. I go from a thick full head of natural curls to her cutting my hair so much that she exposed my thinning and balding areas on my sides. Because my hair is very thick everywhere else, I have done a very good job at rocking hairstyles that don't expose my most sensitive area. Since Varonica has been doing my hair for about a year in my transition from relaxers to natural, she is very aware of my thinning balding areas so why would she cut my hair so low is beyond me especially when I continued to tell her that I don't want my edges exposed, yet she still acted like she knew what she was doing with "17 years of experience". I asked her for my money back but she only offered me $20 for her mistake and I've never heard from her again. She also colored my hair that was also not very good that I'm having to put a black rinse on it because it looks a mess....Now, I'm worried that she has messed up my curl pattern from the bleaching of my hair, in which, I asked her if it will mess up my curl pattern and she said, No. I sent her a before and after pic of my hair and asked her if she would rock this, smh.....of course not!!! Still waiting on an answer.....I want her to be proud of her work and I'm pretty sure she's not. I've been searching for a salon to be my go to place for dread re twist and maintenance. After finding this place online, I called and spoke with Ruth. I arrived for my appointment and Ruth was ready for me. After a great shampoo, she got me in and our the chair in record time. Although she was fast, I never felt she was rushing. Like most stylist, she handled multiple clients but I never once felt neglected. Everyone was warm and inviting. The shop was clean and professional. I also observed the other stylists, and they were all doing a magnificent job on everyone's head. The barbers were precise, and the stylist had women walking out like they were on a box of dark and lovely. Every head looked great leaving that shop. I didn't get my hair done at this salon but my co-worker/friend Amber did.She received a partial weave by Varonica.Upon getting her hair done, she was informed by Varonica that "should she need to have anything fixed, she would do so FREE OF CHARGE within a 2 week timeframe".After getting her hair done on 07/11, she was back in her chair by 07/17 & by 07/21 (today) she needs to be in her chair again.Her tracks are lossening by the day. She's reached out to her via text & phone to get this resolved. As a woman who receives weave on a regular basis, I was appalled by her dispostion and come off via text messages to Amber. Amber asked me to be a "go between" to help get this resolved and she was EXTREMELY RUDE. So I called the salon (she answered) asking to speak to &/or get the name of the owner (she refused). I'm with Vickie... I had an AMAZING experience with Ashley & Jemar (?), who shampooed me and blow dried my hair. Ashley flat ironed, trimmed & styled it. She was nice even though I was late for my appointment & her last client. I was done in 2.5hrs. I am soooo happy! I didn't want my hair presses so it was silk wrapped then bumped again with the flat iron that gave it so much body. I will definitely recommend that salon to everyone for any style or hair texture! I just moved to town and I was looking for a barber. I called Thursday afternoon and asked to make a barber appointment. I spoke with Walter and we confirmed for 1 o'clock Friday. I arrived to the salon at 12:50 on Friday and to my surprise the barber was not there. Someone else greeted me and I told them why I was there. They asked if I had the barber's number and I said no because I was new. She said that he should be here soon. Another lady came up to me about 10 minutes later and said she would cut my hair, just give her 15-20 minutes to finish a roller set. I said okay and informed her that I would run to the ATM. Today I had an appointment with a woman named Mary who was very nice. The salon was very neat and clean. I had to wait about 10 minutes for her to finish some one else's hair which wasn't a problem. Now I have never written a review but I am very unhappy about her work. I showed Mary a picture of what I wanted. I am natural and I like my hair to look as natural as possible. I wanted invisible corn rows. ( It's when you start the corn row with your natural hair and then add pieces of braiding hair) she assured me that she can do this. She said she has been doing hair for 25 years. That made me feel comfortable. She proceeded to do my hair. When I was finally able to she the braids I started to get worried because they were larger than I expected. I let her know that they don't look like the picture. She said everyone braids different. When she was done they looked ok wasn't what I was expecting but I could get by. When I got to my car and started checking them out. They were four really big braids, the back didn't lay right and what the breaking point was, the ends looked like rat tails. There was nothing natural about this hair style. I was really upset after a paid her 50.00 for something I could have done myself. I was so embarrassed And felt some uncomfortable that I took them done. I just moved from NY and I was looking for a great stylist. Needless to say I will NEVER go back to Mary again. She knew she was unable to do what I asked however she still took my money. First visited this salon approximately 2 months ago after a friend's recommendation. Made an appt with a stylist, however she suggusted I see another stylist named Ashley B as I wanted to stay away from heat, as I continue to transition to natural hair. I came back a couple hours later and Ashley B hooked me up with a a trim and two strand twisted my hair...I loved it and made another appt for two strand natural updo a month later and needless to say I loved my hair! I'm so glad that I found a wonderful salon where the majority of the stylist specialize in natural hair, and that I don't have to travel to DC or B-more anymore.
