I was looking to get minor alterations on my wedding dress- hemming so it wouldn't drag on the floor and taken in a little at the top to fit my chest better. With Lydia, I didn't just get the few adjustments I sought out- she went above and beyond to make a dress I bought online look exceptional. Lydia provides both the technical excellence of a phenomenal seamstress and the keen eye of an experienced fashion designer. I received so many compliments on my dress and have never felt so confident and beautiful. Lydia added extra layers of tulle and loaned me a custom-made petticoat, which made my A-line dress perfectly full and flowy, plus made it so easy to walk without stepping on the skirt! Look no further people, Lydia is your girl!!! I didn't realize I needed alterations to my bridesmaids dress A WEEK before the wedding (yikes!). I've heard of Lydia from two brides I knew so I immediately called her up. She was very honest and told me that we were super short in time, but she was willing to see me on the same day I called her. So I went. Lydia works at her own home in Newark. Immediately you'll see all the dresses she's working on so you can tell she's really busy. And I now I know why-- she's really good! My dress was too long and a bit snug, but it still zipped. When I showed her the dress, she said that the material was cheap and the quality was very poor (bought the dress from Amazon, made in China). There wasn't enough fabric to work with, but ultimately she made it work. I only thought I needed the dress shortened but Lydia did more to the dress and really transformed it! She added extra boning to the top part of the dress since it wasn't holding up nicely. She even fixed a few things that were sticking out from the dress that I didn't even notice. Lastly, she also suggested a corset to go with the dress and OMG IT IS A GAME-CHANGER!! (Funny story: she ended up helping the two other bridesmaids in the wedding that came to her five days before the big day because she already knew the dress.) She fixed everything and made the dress fit me (and the other two girls) sooo beautifully. But this is why Lydia is super amazing: besides her magical hands and talent, she is brutally honest and knowledgeable. She will not sugarcoat it if you need to go on a diet (so don't be surprised if she says it to you! Lol). She often says "the dress doesn't lie" and she will hold you accountable in between fittings to see if you truly followed her advice. Unfortunately, I was not able to get any work done by Lydia as I was hoping. I contacted Lydia a couple weeks after receiving my bridesmaid dress and inquired about bringing the waist in as well as hemming. She responded very quickly and we were able to talk over the phone and discuss my needs. Lydia is very honest and lays out what is possible and not possible for alterations. She had not seen my dress prior to talking over the phone so I was asked to send in some pictures with me wearing the dress so she could have an idea of what she'd be working with before my appointment. Lydia and I spoke on the phone on January 18th, 2022, and I told her my wedding was going to be on February 22nd, 2022. My parents brought my wedding dress to Florida from the UK, but I wouldn't return to the Bay Area with my dress until January 29th, 2022. When I tried my dress on at Lydia's house on January 31st, 2022, Lydia said she would usually require two months to carry out as many alterations as my dress would need but she agreed to squeeze me in. Lydia added a bustle to the back of my dress and a ribbon and silver applique to the front of my dress. She raised the hem of my dress and tightened the sleeves. She attached each of the layers of the wedding dress skirt so that they moved as one. She removed some excess material from one of the shoulders on my dress as I have one shoulder slightly higher than the other. She stitched the bust area of the dress to add more shape. Lydia went above and beyond by also recommending that I buy a strapless, adhesive bra to wear under my wedding dress and taught me how to wear the bra properly. She taught my mother-in-law how to button and zip my wedding dress. She loaned me a petticoat that she'd made as the one provided with my wedding dress did not give the desired shape and support. She's even offered to loan me the petticoat again for when I have a second wedding reception in the UK. I should have written this review 6 months ago. But, one thing led to another... such as life... I found Lydia from word of mouth via my wife's friends and on Yelp (of course I do my research). I took a high-end golf rain pants for her to shorten both legs. The pants had velcro straps, zipper, buttons, double layers of water-proof design and a FootJoy logo which I thought was nice to keep, but, then it I loose it because of the alteration, no big deal. I made an appointment with Lydia as she work with appointment only from her house. She is courteous and professional, asked very detailed questions and made sure she understand exactly what I was looking for. Never blinked on the complex design of the legs. Marked everything and measured everything. Her confidence made me at ease. As it was an expensive piece of garment. I found Lydia via Yelp when I was looking for a seamstress for my wedding dress. My wedding was in October 2021. For transparency - I had gone to another seamstress before I had found Lydia, and felt that something was missing. When I met Lydia in person, I knew that she was the one I wanted to use to alter my wedding dress. She is NOT your typical seamstress, she is VERY talented at what she does and thinks about not only how a dress should sit on your, but HOW that can be achieved. For instance, my dress kept sagging at the back, the first seamstress I went to was just going to tighten the dress. But Lydia, she thought through this very carefully. She knew that tightening the dress was not going to prevent the back of my dress from sagging, the material was light it lacked structure and needed help. She came up with the solution for putting boning into that part of the dress, and boy that made the world of difference! This is just one example of how Lydia thinks outside the box to find a proper solution vs the easiest solution. Another thing Lydia does, she teaches you how to properly dress yourself for your wedding day. Even from the first phone call based on pictures I texted her, Lydia was extremely honest and thorough in her explanation of how she would alter the dress down to my size. Lydia was amazing. She was very helpful and friendly. She is an expert when it comes to wedding dress alteration and her price is very reasonable. Lydia had to take in the chest area, shortened the hem, add in a bustle and lengthen the layer inside. She also helped clean up the work from my previous designer as well.
