Anxious when I passed the perimeter. But seconds later I spotted the sign. I guess if you're going to offer meats from locally raised, free range animals I guess you better be close to the farmers. Frigs commitment to quality is perhaps unparalleled. They buy from Manitoba farmers, butcher everything on site, cure their own meats in a smoker out back using hickory and mesquite (no nitrates here), and guarantee that everything is gluten free (no filler!). In an almost uncomfortably small space, they manage to stock an extensive supply of product including all the usual cuts of bison, from steaks to burgers. But there were a few surprises too including corned bison and an intensely smoky, sweet bison bacon that I dream about to this day. My head exploded when I found goose, and I was also delighted finding elk from not too far away Stonewall which I made my purchase of the day turning it into one the best meatloaves I've ever made. If you're still a little skittish about those wild meats, there's still a full selection of beef and pork in all the obligatory cuts, but after spending a few minutes in Frigs, these somehow seemed borderline boring.

Their summer "camping"/"cottage" packages are also an excellent grab when you're on the way out of the city and in a rush. You simply walk in and ask for the package and off you go. This place is located just south of west broadway in a small building where the place is literally crammed with a million items. There was quite the selection of halal all beef salami, mortadella, and even bologna (who knew that existed as halal!). There were several types of middle eastern cheeses like halloumi. Lots of spices, canned goods, Turkish items, and frozen meat. Service is very friendly as one staff member offered to give me a tour of the place when I had more time. There were some prepared samosas and rotis (veg and meat filled) selling at the front near the cashier. Parking is available behind the store and on the side street for an hour.
