As it stands now, don't make the same mistake I did. I am disappointed and feel that they ripped me off because they didn't do what I hired them to do. I wanted to support them because they are local and truthfully, I thought it was a family-owned small business, not one that hires out contractors. The job I had seemed relatively easy. Other contractors had quoted $200 (I figured all total it might come to around $300) but since I had contacted M. Cary first, I decided they were the ones to go with. I was wrong. I spoke with another plumber who had contacted me the same day M. Cary was set to come; he was kind enough to call the next day to see if my problem was fixed (a smart business decision on his part). Having had a long conversation with him about what happened, I wish I had gone with him instead. He seemed very genuine and knowledgeable. He also has excellent ratings on HomeGuide. But I digress... M. Cary & Daughters Pros and Cons: CONS: - EXTREMELY overpriced - Incomplete work PROS: - The contractor was friendly. - The person who took the appointment was friendly. At least I know not to hire them in the future myself and hopefully, this review will let neighbors know they might want to find a different plumber if the price is a concern. PRICE BREAKDOWN (why I think it was fair to just offer to pay for the parts) Yes, he did have to come out 2 times, but my condo is literally 1 mile (3 min drive) from M. Cary and on both visits combined, he spent less than an hour doing work and travel. The reason he had to come out twice was that he needed to order the part. The total cost quoted on the first visit: $320, (I didn't realize that the dispatch fee was extra but even so, that would be $385) Total cost breakdown with knowledge of parts + labor prices $185 (the hourly charge for labor) $65 (cartridge est.) $80 (what he claimed part cost) $65 (dispatch fee) -------------------------------- Total Actual Cost with Labor and Parts: $395 Total I paid on the first visit: $470 Since they didn't complete the job, the total additional they wanted me to pay for a 2nd visit was $265 I offered to pay for parts only: $80 Total Actual parts and labor: $395 Total Amount I paid: $470 Additional I originally offered to pay for parts: $80 Amended Additional I offered to pay for parts + time: $100 They could have made $570 on a job that should have been at most $395 and had a satisfied local customer who would have used them again but they opted to hold firm at $735... losing $100 with a dissatisfied customer and no repeat business. WHAT YOU SHOULD EXPECT: - Upfront, the cost of their dispatch fee is $65. That does not get subtracted from the cost of the service. - Communication with genuinely nice people - Might need to stay on top of it. They tended to call back right away but if it's a "follow up" call, it might fall off their radar. - To be charged a LOT more than the market rate (remember that you're paying for the contractors + company so it's much more expensive than it would be to go with someone who works for themselves). If money is no object, they are good. You can just think of it as "supporting a local business." Yes, they charge too much and in good faith, I don't recommend them for that reason, but I have nothing bad to say about the company itself. I had what I thought was a plumbing issue because of a weird smell, so Ian came over to scope it out. I was able to snag an appointment next day, which I was relieved by, and the minute he walked in and assessed what was going on, he explained that he didn't think the smell was a plumbing issue. He checked the toilet and sink from where I thought the smell was originating, but then suggested we check the crawl space, where I found a massive dead possum - clearly the actual root of my problem. Ian was so helpful despite my problem not even being a plumbing problem at the end of the day! I love M Cary and Daughters and am grateful for their help in all facets of home ownership. There is an interment leak in our upstairs bathroom that I wanted to see if they could diagnose. They said there was a 60 trip charge which we were fine with. The plumber came, and claimed that if you ran the tub slowly, water could get on the floor because it's a filler for a clawfoot tub. We explained we hadn't run the tub in weeks, so it wasn't the problem. He said it might be anyway and proceeded to charge us an extra $200 for his "diagnostics" read more

I have used M Cary & Daughters plumbing service in three of the houses I've owned over the last 20 years, including service from them today. The repair I had in my last house, a few years back, was a major sewer line replacement that was done efficiently and at a fair price. They came out today to my current home, and were able to repair our water line on-the-spot instead of having to do a full replacement. Having used them over the years, my experience with them is that they are always thorough and efficient. I would say they are moderately priced, certainly not as expensive as a franchise service like Roto Rooter but not cheap either. However, you get what you pay for. The plumber I have dealt with from M Cary on these jobs has over 20 years of experience. And they always come with a team ready to do the work if needed. They may need to schedule a few days out, but set clear expectations and keep their appointments. My overall experience with them is that you get a professionally done job for a reasonable price. We have used MCarey before and been happy with the results. Unfortunately our recent experience has soured us a bit. We had a gurgling toilet and called them out to check it out. They diagnosed it as a flow issue in the main line, removed a toilet and snaked the line out. They put a camera down and told us that our line was "in great condition" and that they had solved the issue. We paid about $600 for this. A week or so later the gurgling returned. The office told us that since "they don't know what we've been putting down there" since then, it would cost another $600 for them to come out and re-treat. We instead called another company to come out who found that there were multiple breaks in the line allowing debris into it, and roots/holes in the main line to the street. The entire line to the street was solidly clogged. Obviously we feel that paying MCary $600 to not solve our problem and expecting payment to come actually solve it was not a great experience. read more

I had the daughters rip out and replace all the cast iron in my 83 year old house, which took almost a week. I'm very satisfied. The quality is topnotch and the job was done in such a way as to minimize disruption and damage to the walls and ceiling. I've had an extra bathroom that has not been used in a blue moon after I had some jerk plumber come in and tell me it would cost thousands to have my toilet and shower fixed. Well, I finally got sick of the inconvenience and perused Yelp. I liked the previous reviews on M. Cary and Daughters and thought I would give them a go. I called, they fit me right in, and came when they said they would. I got a female plumber- YES! I was alone and my hair was already bristling, thinking some guy was going to come in and try to railroad me with extras. I immediately felt comfortable with her. She took a look at my bathroom and showed me the cracks in the parts inside my toilet (I knew it had to go- it was 30 years old) and it would cost so much more to fix all the parts, I might as well get a new toilet. Agreed. And the previous plumber told me that it would cost hundreds upon hundreds of dollars to fix my shower. Nah, she said, it just needed some washers replaced, no biggie. She came on a Friday, and had a new toilet and the parts in by Monday. I asked them to come on Thursday, they showed up and fixed it all for a great price in under an hour. So far, the new toilet works perfectly (my fiance flushed it over and over again like a child with a new toy) and the shower no longer incessantly drips. Big thumbs up to M. Brief encounter with them - they came to check out our water heater, figured out the problem with it, spent a good deal of time finding a part then discovered that the real problem was the external electrical system! M Cary's plumbers were professional, polite, and did not try to "schmooze" me; they are expensive. This is a really good option if money is not a constraint for you. I had a simple problem (two leaking bath taps) that I was willing to spend a few hundred fixing; the bill came closer to $1000. If there's one thing I should have learned from other reviewers: ASK ABOUT BILLING BEFORE SERVICE. There was ALSO an incident that makes me feel unsettled: the two taps were easy washer fixes (pricey at $400 for labor and washers), but in the repair process a completely different part of my plumbing suddenly "became" broken. I had never had any problems with this aspect of my plumbing before and it had nothing to do with my service call, but once it broke I was forced to have another, more complicated repair on the spot - not doing so would have left me without water. The technicians claimed that it was old, about-to-go-anyway, etc. Maybe this is true. It sounded like a certain amount of violence was used on the tap before it broke, but I don't honestly know, so I can't say. But there's something about new things breaking while the experts are there that just doesn't make you feel good.. All in all, I will probably not call this company again, even though I feel confident in the end they did fix everything well. They were both highly competent and courteous. But from the shock of my family, friends and neighbors, I think I may have paid a bit too much. read more

We've used M. Cary and Daughters for several years for typical household plumbing tasks and have been totally satisfied with their work every time. You might find a cheaper plumber to do the job at times, but the quality of the work with M. Cary is excellent and you'll know they did the job right. We just had a water heater replaced and they not only installed the tank as expected, they also reconfigured it so it wouldn't take as much room and they did a much better job at plumbing it than the last guy did on the old tank. We also had them come out one time to check on a leak in the kitchen faucet. It turned out to be a simple tightening of the hose connector going into the spray head, but they didn't even charge us for it (since we're on-going customers I suppose). read more

A few months after they installed the water heater, it died. They sent out a technician quickly. Unfortunately, the source stems from my fridge, so she could not help me repair that problem. She referred me to a company that has multiple poor reviews on Yelp (I think she might have had a good experience with them and they are close to my house). My four out of five star rating stems from the receptionist not informing me of the $125 diagnostic fee upfront. $125 for a 20 min diagnosis doesn't sit well and it's worth losing a star in an overall positive experience. read more

About three years ago, I had a leak in my bathroom ceiling. M Cary was very responsive. They came out, determined quickly that it was the overflow and replaced it. I found the bill to be expensive, ~$240, but didn't know much about plumbing and was happy that it was fixed. Three years later, (now), I noticed a leak in the same area. This time, I was more selective in my search for a plumber. I found one. They came out, determined that it was that same overflow and mentioned that it wasn't installed properly and it looked used. I typically do not write reviews but want to share the wonderful service we received from M. Carey and Daughters. We have been having plumbing issues in kitchen: garbage disposal stopped working and horrible smell. The plumber, Kat, came out to check out the issue. She related that not only was the garbage disposal out of commission but the pipes and faucet needed repair. Not what i wanted to hear but suspected it was such. Upon her return, she replaced garbage disposal and faucet and reconfigured the pipes. Whomever installed the pipes when kitchen was built did some craziness down there with the pipes. Kat was able to reconfigure to allow much more space underneath the cabinet. Everything is working great. Great customer service from the phone call to the repair. M. Carey came highly recommended to us and we highly recommend them to you. Thanks M. Carey! I have used this company before and have been happy with them hence my 2 stars instead of 1. Every time I have had a woman plumber give a quote and do work with m Cary I have been satisfied. Yesterday I had a plumber come out from m Cary plumbing and give me a quote. This was a man.. This was to replace a water main line coming from the meter to the house. The plumber told me I had galvanized steel coming from the street and I needed to have it replaced all the way to the house and my quote $3100. Well, I didn't just fall off the turnip truck. It was not galvanized from the meter it was copper and I had it fixed with J Squared plumbing for $469 as a tree root had grew against the pipe and caused it to be crushed over time. Incorrect information was given to me about the main line from m carry's plumber and a gouging quote of over $3000!!!!!! I don't know what to say other than what the fact are here.... I'm sorry I won't be using M Carrey any longer and I have a lot of rental property that they have done repairs for me in the past. read more

We could not be more pleased with the work done at our house by M Cary and Daughters. We live in a 96 year old house with "antique "plumbing. Our vintage porcelain console sink began to leak earlier this year. We had contacted another well known Atlanta plumbing company which told us that the sink could not be saved and that the leak could not be repaired without destroying our tile and redoing the entire bathroom. We called M Cary and Daughters and they did a beautiful job restoring our sink and fixing the leak with minimum damage to our walls. The work was done quickly and efficiently with very little mess. I was told they would come after 2 PM on the date we scheduled. Then, on the morning of the appointment, the plumber called and said she was going to be in the neighborhood and would be coming earlier (this was at 10 AM). If I was home, that would have been great! But I wasn't home, and wasn't planning on being home until 2:00. She told me she did not want to come back later since she was already nearby. And then she told me there is no way of telling when they would arrive, and made it seem like I was crazy they had given me any time estimate at all when I made the appointment. Seriously, how can people rate M Cary so highly? They provided the most unprofessional service last year when I ask them to look at a leak in the line from the water meter to my house. Instead of meeting with me so that I could get a quote on replacing the line, they started digging to fix it. They were going to charge me $385 if I didn't let them continue. Then they said the line was copper, which it isn't. $1000 later I still had a non-copper line. Now it is leaking again and I am looking for a plumber. I am amazed to find M Cary rated so high on Yelp. Makes me wonder since they aren't rated very high on Kudzu. read more

She fixed my leak, reconfigured the pipes, gave me more space under my sink, and kept the area perfectly clean the whole time. She quoted the actual amount I was billed right up front, got in and out, and saved me a bundle with a quick fix on a separate problem while she was at it.
