MAC Fitness is a great gym with great people. The trainers are knowledgeable and helpful. The equipment is first-rate and extensive. They have a sled, power training ropes, a Jacobs Ladder, and the full gamut of weight machines as well as a huge range of free weights and stretch equipment of many kinds (I have used hammers) in several rooms. They are the best-equipped gym in the area. The facilities are clean and well maintained. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the place has a great atmosphere. The trainers are great, and I worked with one for three years before going on my own. Unlike many of the gyms in Manhattan, they are honest. The price is moderate given the extensive equipment. All of the equipment I use regularly, especially the weight machines, work fine almost all of the time. The weight machines I use regularly include the sled, Jacobs Ladder, biceps, triceps, chest press, lat pulldown, fly, row, leg press, leg curl, leg extension, and abdominal. I also use treadmills, bicycles, ellipticals, and similar aerobic machines. The machines all work fine and are in good shape. Occasionally one breaks down, of course, but they are fixed quickly. They have plenty of room for stretching. The bathrooms and locker rooms are clean and not too crowded. They have a huge selection of treadmills, bicycles, row machines, and ellipticals, and in three years I have always been able to get one without a wait. Sometimes some of the weight machines are occupied at busy times (they can use an additional biceps machine), but there has never been a time when I could not find at least several free machines, even at the busiest times, as people were rotating. There are a lot of great people of all ages working out there. It's conveniently located near Walgreens, Herzog's, Hannaford's, etc. in Kingston Plaza. It is the best of seven or eight gyms to which I have belonged since my friend's dad used to take us to the McBurney Y, then on 23rd Street, in the mid-1960s. read more

MAC Fitness is closed due to the Corona Virus, yet is charging members monthly dues, unless they can cancel out of their contracts or their annual memberships are past their first full year. They also did not send any kind of announcement to their members about the closure or their COVID-19 preparedness. Very uncool. The club is perfectly fine otherwise. I've enjoyed working out there. Addendum to review after reply from Holly Snow, owner of MAC -- Read the comments below that the owner of MAC Fitness posted. She is an angry, abusive person. I predicted in the original review that she would post a ranting, abusive reply to this review, and like clockwork she replied in this manner. This is a person who lashes out and abuses her customers on a public forum. Her version of the "truth" is more than a bit stylized. Being a locally-run, woman-owned business does not make you a quality operation, or an ethical businessperson. After such an abusive response to my yelp review of bad experiences, I have to change this to 1 star. Original review: It seemed like a good idea to join this place. But now I regret my purchase. Here are the perks: 1. There is a lot to choose from in terms of machines. (This is also a problem, though. See below.) 2. Ashley the fitness consultant is friendly and the real reason I joined. 3. Fitness classes! 4. Nice towels for a low fee. 5. It's rarely crowded. Here are downsides: 1. It's possible there are way too many machines here, crammed into a maze-like space. More than a few machines are a bit past their prime. The treadmills and ellipticals are geriatric and wobbly - meh at best. 2. The men's locker area is not especially well ventilated. 3. Aloof desk staff- PF is a lot friendlier than this place. My complaint is that they ignore you mostly. You usually have to track them down if you need something. Check in is self-service, and that sets the tone for the rest of the visit. 4. The sales staff are fast to sell you a training contract and don't really go over the fine print with you. I'm my case, it wasn't clearly explained that I would be billed every month ongoing for personal training. The training was good at first, so I went with it. Everywhere else, you buy a package and then buy more when you are ready. Here they sell you a mortgage. 5. Trainer turnover and some lackluster training staff. In my case, my first trainer was really great. Then she was out on maternity leave for a long time and then didn't return. There weren't many evening hours available, so after a long pause I was assigned to another trainer. This person kinda phoned it in, going through the same stuff every time and never really asking me about my goals. It became stale quickly, I became under-motivated, and I under-utilized the personal training. 6. Buying local doesn't mean a better deal or a better customer experience. It also doesn't mean that you get treated like a customer who has paid a good deal on extras since joining. I'd think a local place would be more flexible. My work is taking me out of town and my membership is getting frozen until I figure out whether I'll be able to come back to the Hudson Valley. However, despite having paid a good deal on training, having underutilized the sessions I racked up, Holly, the owner feels that she can't refund the month of training just billed yesterday, which I will never use. Here's where buying local bites you in the a$$. You can't transfer this to another gym. And I guess she's gotta make the rent or something like that. (See #5 above, "It's rarely crowded".) You would think that buying local would mean also more flexibility. But that is not the case here. 7. The last person that posted a negative review got a quasi-abusive response from MAC staff. Went to check out the 9w location. Not impressed. The pros are that it has a spa and the place is clean looking. It is a large facility and they do offer classes. The layout seems awkward and the first several machines I tried had issues. The machines look old with very obvious signs of wear and tear. They sorely need to update. Been a member of this gym for 3.5-4 years at this point and I'm still here for a reason. Or several. For starters it's not that purple and yellow gym that dictates what type of hat you can or can't wear and kicked me out for wearing the wrong style hat - tldr - the mac doesn't care about your fashion. As a lowlife, I like that. It makes me feel comfortable being myself. There are a lot of machines and two areas of free weight/dumbbells allowing for a workout without having to wait for someone to stop texting and get off the machine/bench so it can be used properly. I haven't had any personal training but the trainers are always polite and helpful toward their clients. The counter staff is always kind and courteous. They make you feel like you're less of a customer and more a part of the overall gym experience. And don't forget to grab a shake from Julie at the shake counter on the way out! If you're lucky she may have her dog with her! And who doesn't love dogs? The only reason this isn't a five star review is because of the recent change in policy that restricts members from bringing a guest. It was a nice perk to have. read more

I was excited to give MAC Fitness a try once I heard this business was female run, but my experience going into this club was so disappointing ... last week I went into the club and I was greeted by a super friendly and smiley front desk clerk which was great. He introduced himself and walked me over to a cubicle and introduced me to a young female with curly brown hair that was scrolling through her cellphone. She immediately acted bothered that I was interrupting her and then asked me to have a seat over in the waiting area because she had to take her dog for a walk to use the bathroom!! YES you heard that right!!! Was it Bring your dog to work day? Gym dog?! Luckily my child wasn't with me as he is severely allergic to dogs and cats. The front desk clerk looked as displeased as I was with her response. While I waited the guy at the front desk kindly made small talk with me about the classes that the club provided and some information on the spin instructors which was wonderful! After she came back in from walking her dog, she took me on a tour of the facility and she couldn't have been any less thrilled to be talking to me as she was holding her cell phone in her hand that kept going off with alerts that she would glance at throughout the tour and even at one point took a picture of the floor or machine and texted it to someone! The whole experience made me feel uncomfortable and really disappointed. read more

I came with a friend to try it out as a quest. The first thing I noticed was how filthy the place is. There were several leaks in the ceiling (garbage cans collecting the stream of brown run off), the floors and equipment are down right disgusting and don't even ask about the men's locker room - wet carpeted floors with heavy mold throughout! Second impression was the multitude of broken and outdated machines on the exercise floor. The condition of the parking lot was horrendous - in my opinion, a law suit waiting to happen (flooding and ice everywhere where one would walk !), uneven and broken up sidewalks and stair way. There is no WiFi available (ridiculous - this is 2014!!) , 4 out of 7 TV monitors were out of order and the tiles on the floor of the main hall way were broken and lifted! I am still in total shock....mainly because a "sales person" approached me and began explaining that this was a "premium gym" and worth the elevated cost of membership! After speaking to this very odd person, who had great difficulty maintaining eye contact and acted erratically at times, I realized this was the owner. A strange fellow - perhaps he is on the spectrum?... but I digress. The last and possibly the worst impression was watching the girl up front prepare a "health" shake for a women who should have been paying more attention to her shake prep and less attention to her cell phone. The girl making the shake must have had allergies or a cold bad enough to warrant staying home that day as her nose was in constant flow mode. Here is how that went: she wiped her nose with her hand, scooped ice into a large cup, wiped her nose with the back of her hand, scooped some powder into the cup, wiped her nose with her finger tips, opened a container of some liquid, wiped her nose.....you get the point! YUCK! I wish I could say something positive about the place but I really can't, expect maybe to say - I'm glad I didn't pay anything to try it out? MAC Fitness staff is friendly, until you ask them about canceling your membership. They will stop smiling and inform you how much they will charge you to cancel your account. My mother had a similar experience. They defer to the contract, but they don't seem to realize that a $75 cancellation fee is not worth all the negative feedback they generate through the community. MAC Fitness also lacks essential gym gear, like dip belts and kettlebells. Well, they have a full set of kettlebells, but you aren't allowed to use them unless you're being trained by a Personal Trainer. Essentially, you have to pay for the kettlebells by the minute. What the hell? One power rack, but four benches. Two smith machines, but no glute-ham raise. This is a baby-step above Planet Fitness. That brings me to the personal trainers. And boy, do they deserve one star. They will have you do nonsense like sitting against a wall (seriously, you will pay per-minute to have someone watch you sitting against a wall) or resistance exercises like light bicep curls and tricep extensions with such little weight that you will see literally no difference in your health or physique. It's basic physiology. Light weight won't even build functional strength. They might as well be on a walk around the neighborhood. See, here's the problem: personal trainers carry a cache of authority. If you tell an overweight person, "This is how you get in shape," she will listen to you. So stop giving them the feel-good, easy-way-out method. It's one thing if a person gets a lite-gym membership and decides to do slow walking on a treadmill as their sole source of exercise. In that case, it's a personal choice to be ignorant. It's another thing to pay someone else for guidance and get nothing of real value in return. I'm convinced that these people faked their way through certification. I have never seen a trainer teaching the squat, deadlift, dip, row, or any other activity that will promote health, welfare, and fat loss. Not even easy-to-learn stuff like leg press. (Yes, overweight people should be taught that muscle growth will produce fat loss.) Like with their membership, they get your money up-front and, hell, what are you going to say, afterward? "Thanks, but I'm not seeing results?" And you sure as hell won't see results from light overhead tricep extensions and bicep curls. Don't be scammed by their nonsense. I gave it two stars because the cleaning staff is excellent and most of their equipment is in good condition. Otherwise? Find a real gym, or head to Planet Fitness, who will give you a lite-gym membership for $99 with no questions asked. And I hate Planet Fitness. read more

Del who does membership is "overly friendly" to women when he wants to be. He'll say anything to make you feel taken care of, and when you least expect it- you've been duped. Watch out, the owner Holly doesn't disapprove of this behavior apparently! We were misinformed about our membership and NO ONE came forward and made us feel heard and attended to- even after being promised a return call day after day owners and responsible parties avoided taking care of our dispute. I have been a member of MAC Fitness for about 10 years. It's a wonderful gym! Tons of equipment, a gigantic main room with high ceilings & an oversized fan, great spaces for functional training, stretching & jumping rope, a terrific aerobics room, clean shower & locker facilities, nice people on staff... add to that a reasonable membership fee... and it's everything I could ask for in a health club! I find the overall atmosphere of the club to be very motivational & welcoming and that's why I look forward to coming here a few times a week! Other highlights to consider: Great tanning equipment, good water pressure/temperature in showers, cool ambient temperature & air circulation in workout rooms, the machines are well maintained and new gear is often added, lots of TVs -if you're into that, and an overwhelmingly nice clientele (i.e. not too many obnoxious 'gym-jerks'... almost none really... I hope I'm not considered one!). I travel for work and I get to use gyms all over the world. I've seen some really nice health clubs out there, but I always look forward to returning home to 'MY' club... MAC Fitness!! read more

My teenage son had been trying to cancel is membership for several months. He was given instructions that he had to wait until 1 year, which he did. Then he was still charged an extra month fee. When I called to complain, the owner said her staff wouldn't do that, put us on hold while she tried to conduct an investigation, then wanted my son to drive back and point out the people who gave him that information! Like a line up. If he could do that she would refund him cash on the spot. She couldn't see that was inappropriate. I felt it was fair that we paid $75 for the months he hasn't gone, but unfair to tack on another $25 for December. And no I did not want a $25 gift certificate. Never returning. read more

This place is gorgeous. The pictures above are of their other location, not the Kingston plaza location. Huge selection of equipment, mini indoor turf field, smoothie/juice bar, gorgeous locker rooms with nice showers, and fantastic staff and trainers. I can't get over how affordable it is for what you get, and for the benefits of membership. Free guest passes, complimentary training session, tanning booths, etc...Sure, it's more expensive than planet fitness - but planet fitness is a huge franchise with hundreds of locations. Considering that this is a small business with two locations, and it's extremely affordable with updated equipment and facilities, I'd say it's an awesome value. I love this gym! read more

I signed up for MAC Fitness about 7 weeks ago. Here are my thoughts: - They are 3 times the price of Planet Fitness. That is a sizable difference. I signed up here expecting it to be 3 times better. So far, mixed results. - The trainers are great. Rachael and Chuckie in particular are very friendly and personable. They encourage me and seem genuinely interested in my progress. Same goes for the manager, Scott. These are people I look forward to seeing when I work out and make me feel great about hitting my goals. Caylee at the desk is a sweetheart too and always has a towel ready for me the second I walk in. Very nice staff! - One complaint, when I started here the tv's worked great the first week. Then, there was an issue with Time Warner cable. The service was resumed but even the Golf Channel we got briefly is gone again. For 6 weeks now I've used the treadmills grimly staring at the blank screen, wistfully remembering when there was something to take my mind off the long and boring trek. I ask periodically about its return, but my questions are gruffly received. No end in sight here. - Another point of contention is the closing hours on weekends. Tonight I showed up at 7:30pm and was surprised to learn that they close at 7pm Saturdays and Sundays. How odd! That seems awfully early. I'm generally not a night person, but I'd like the option at least. - Those concerns aside, the place is clean and well kept. Equipment is plentiful and runs perfectly. I don't take classes, but they seem varied and well attended. All in all, I am happy with my gym and will continue there. If only they would address my 2 issues, I would happily adjust my star rating. Great place otherwise! read more

I love it here! Been a member since I moved to West Hurley in September 2018 and couldn't be happier. I could have chose somewhere closer but decided to check it out. Although cleaning staff was in there because it was near closing, Josh saw me peaking in the windows and took us for a tour. My husband and I joined the next day. We are both pretty consistent and go at least 3-4 times a week. I really have no negatives. I owned my own gym and realize how difficult it is to please everyone. Cancelation policy is pretty clear so anyone complaining that it is hard to cancel is just looking to complain. I had the same problem with the gym I owned and we asked for a 30 day notice so many complained about the extra charge they incurred if they were outside the cancellation period. Complaints about too many machines? Really?Definitively not overcrowded. I have been in clubs where there were not enough equipment and people were waiting for machines. Atmosphere is very upbeat, staff is super friendly, trainers are always busy and helpful if you have questions. Very clean and Holly just put in all new flooring that looks beautiful! Hey, listen you can't make people exercise and unless they use the facility, really can't justify their negative comments. I honestly, think it is a very welcoming, clean and a non intimidating club. I have been to Golds,PF, Brewster Athletic and East Fishkill sports club and Mac is definitely my favorite. read more

I joined this gym as a gold member to MAC Plaza. I thought the price was fair for what the gym has to offer(personal training session, level 1 tanning), though I have been turned off lately. They do not tell you anywhere on the website that they charge you some "re-up" fee every March...do not know why. There are usually not many people there, but when there is, too many of their treadmills are out of order. The toilets in the women's bathroom never flush either! And they dont let you use wifi for internet radio, which is a bummer. My advice is if you are like me and are just looking for a gym, no classes, join Planet Fitness.. you wont be sucked in for a year, no re up fee, and they are on top of their equipment. The owners are not people you want to deal with. They have no "people sense", only in this for the $$$. They break contracts, don't fix their crappy equipment and they treat loyal customers like dirt. I have heard too many similar stories from people saying they left for the same reason. The one positive I can say is that the classes and instructors are amazing. I don't feel they deserve your $$$.....find a different gym. If you must join this gym head to their 9w location. The owner there, Lyle, is very welcoming, the classes are great and the people are friendly. The plaza location is a different story. The manager there, Holly, is rude, will talk loudly about members and lets her 8 month old baby roam around the gym unsupervised. If you say anything about the unsupervised baby (who crawls into the locker room and under weight equipment), she will scream at you and demean you after you leave. Someone should call CPS on her. She is publicly condescending to her staff (who are very nice people), and talks down to her cleaning crew at night. It's very obvious that she gets off on her position of authority and loves to make people feel rotten. Please dont give this woman money. If members call in to terminate their membership or ask for a refund...she will ignore the messages, not return the calls and claim she never got a message (which is why they continue to get billed after cancellation). The equipment is old, some of it is faulty and prior members have gotten skin infections from the tanning beds. If you complain about any of this...she will tell you off. Their only redeeming qualities are their friendly front desk staff, and the trainers, who are very nice people and do their best with their SUNY Ulster training certificates. Mention them at all to the manager however and she will be glad to rip them apart and is dismissive to any positive feedback about anyone other than herself. Everything is fine unless you have to cancel your membership. You have to provide 30 days notice for some unexplainable reason. All that does is allow them to bill you for one more month before you can cancel. There is also a 75$ cancellation fee that goes along with the extra month so it essentially costs 100$ to cancel your membership. This is unreasonable in every ethical sense. If you get hurt, or in my case have to move out of the area, there is no other choice but to get ripped for 100 bucks. Seeing as how gyms are very similar I would have just gone to planet fitness in hindsight. It's cheaper and they also don't make you sign a contract with the sole purpose of trying to get as much money as they can out of the customer. It didn't help that when I questioned why there was such a high cancellation fee along with the highly questionable 30 days notice the manager was very rude and condescending when explaining it to me. Somebody should tell them that in this day and age word of mouth travels very fast. My advice would be to avoid this place at all costs. Because unless you can see into the future and foresee any complications, cancelling your membership gives the Mac an excuse to gouge you for 100$ one last time. read more
