I've never lived in an apartment before renting out the one I have now with Mac Properties, but I don't feel much on a day-to-day basis to be lacking. The staff I've interacted with (Amari and Tanisha for calls and work orders, Stefan for maintenance) have been very lovely, quite friendly and polite, and they do make me feel quite cared about. I'm usually extremely anxious about making or picking up phone calls, but I do tend to pick up the ones that seem to be follow-ups from Mac about work orders because the staff I've interacted with make me feel much more at ease than usual. I also find maintenance to be very personable. Stefan and the others who have come by have been very attentive and thorough with the work they've done, and they always verbally check in with us if we're home when they come in, to make sure that they've completed work orders exactly as we wanted. Mac's resident portal isn't great, the help articles are atrociously unhelpful, and I don't really understand why they ask for preferences around contact for work orders because they always email and call regardless of what you indicate. The lawn is always somewhat overrrun with weeds, regardless of the season, so that's a little annoying as well. But maintenance is always incredibly prompt, and usually when the weather gets nicer, someone adds some nice plants to the flower pots outside my unit, which I appreciate. So overall.... I don't exactly feel like Mac Properties totally makes looking after residents their very top priority, but I don't have much to complain about either. I wish we had central a/c and more control over heating, but I suppose it's an old building and that's not really within their control. And I really do appreciate the staff. They're probably the biggest upside to living where I do. read more

As of February 5th, this issue still persists with no genuine effort from the landlord to resolve it. Instead, I am met with avoidance, disregard, and false claims of completed work orders, while they insist there is no mouse infestation or evidence of mice in my unit. The landlord continues to deny that there is a problem. They refuse to credit my account for the cost of materials I purchased on my own to protect my home. Calls and work orders remain unaddressed, and they mark them as complete without any resolution. This situation has been ongoing since May 2025. It has become so severe that mice are now openly visible, as if they pay rent, and they walk around the traps. This is a health hazard, and I can't even stay in my home comfortably. I have always held Mac Properties in high regard, especially because my mother has been a tenant in one of your properties for over 15 years. She has never been on Section 8 and has consistently paid market rent. However, my recent experience with your leasing process has been extremely frustrating and disappointing. As a separated mother of three, with one child who has autism and a heart defect, I already face numerous challenges. I am also currently in graduate school, so I am certainly not the "typical" tenant. Despite this, I feel that I am being unfairly discriminated against because I am a Section 8 voucher holder. I have been searching for a walk-up unit in one of your properties due to ongoing elevator issues in my current high-rise, which present a serious concern for my child's health and well-being. I've reached out to your leasing consultant multiple times, requesting to fill out an application, but instead of providing me with the application, she continues to send me only the pre-application. Furthermore, she has been largely unresponsive to my messages, only responding when it is convenient for her. Despite my efforts to communicate, including a message expressing that I feel discriminated against, she has failed to acknowledge or address my concerns. Up until I mentioned that I am a Section 8 tenant, our communication was positive. However, since then, I've been ignored, and I still haven't received an application, nor have I been given any clear guidance on how to proceed. I am actively trying to secure a unit for June, as indicated on your website, but the delays and lack of communication I've faced are both discouraging and unprofessional. If I could give Zero stars, I would. Mac Properties is a plague in Hyde Park and the community would be so much better off without them. Mac Properties is probably the MOST negligent, irresponsible, and idiotic leasing company imaginable. I rented a unit from them this past year and I will NEVER rent from them again. There have been multiple problems including but not limited to, REPEATED flooding of our unit from rainstorms, homeless people living in the utility closets of our building as well as sleeping in the hallways and staircases on upper floors, constant package theft, broken exterior locks/door handles, and just over all inadequate, INCOMPETENT managment. Our apartment has flooded multiple times, after the first flood I requested that managment do something about the damaged hardwood floors and test for mold. Not only did they do NOTHING about the flooring, the REFUSED my request for mold testing after the flood. All they did after the flood was put 1 (one) portable dehumidifier in the apartment that had to be emptied constantly 3-5x per day. The apartment still smelled musty, the floors are warped beyond belief, and I began suffering from respiratory issues from staying in the apartment too long. Tasia and her manager, Robin, both came to the property and tried to convince me the flood did not happen and the discoloration of the floor was from different stains used on the hardwood. This was obviously a load of crap, because when we moved in the floor was not discolored, and I physically witnessed the flooding of the entire lobby and both first floor apartments. I battled with Mac Properties to try and get them to conduct a mold test and senior managment REFUSED. Eventually, I just gave up because spending countless hours on and off hold, being told staight-up LIES that this building has never flooded in the past, when other multi-year residents have shown me photo and video proof that it has flooded in years past with time stamped images. As soon as I became exhausted of trying to deal with Mac and their BS, guess what happens? It floods AGAIN! This time worse than before and Mac did even LESS this time than they did before. I have had open trouble tickets over this issue since december, but they refused to do anything and then closed the maintainence request without solving any of the issues. I would open new requests and they would almost immediately close them without addressing the issue. DO NOT EVER RENT FROM MAC PROPERTIES THEY ARE GREEDY, NEGLIGENT AND IRRESPONSIBLE LANDLORDS. Look up the Class-Action Lawsuits against them, because it tells you all you need to know. I wish I could rate this 0 stars. This is the worst company I've ever had the displeasure of interacting with. Not only are the apartments full of problems, leaks, and bugs, but they can't seem to follow up on a single maintenance request. I have been waiting for damn near 3 weeks and have not gotten them to install my A/C. They actually came once, did half of it, and left, leaving a gap underneath my bug screen so I can't even open my window for ventilation! Wow! Incredibly unimpressed with Mac Properties and I have only been here for ONE month. The leasing team has no regard for attention to detail and management has such poor communication skills it's astounding. They need to work on many things if they are even remotely interested in resident retention and providing a positive experience at all. I visited Chicago a month before my move-in date and was very specific about wanting to see the exact units that I would be living in. Our leasing agent, Khalil B., reassured us that this would be the case. We toured two different buildings and decided to sign a lease with one. He told us that we were responsible for paying the company for rent and a building services fee (heat, water, sewage, and trash) and were also responsible for internet and electricity on our own. He informed us that there was no package service in the building and that management would not receive our packages and it was our responsibility. When we received the lease, we noticed a package addendum and an electricity/cooking gas section. In the package addendum, we had to acknowledge and allow Mac employees to be able to receive packages on our behalf etc. I signed even though I knew this was not a service that would apply to this building but found it odd that it was still in my lease. I reached out to Khalil about the cooking gas since I did not remember discussing this as a responsibility and he responded that the stove was electric and that section did not apply. He told me that twice over text because I had asked a few times. So, I assumed that the cooking gas section was like the package addendum and did not apply to the building. On move in day, I go to the unit which we had toured and he told me I had leased. Someone else was moving into the unit. After calling him and not receiving a response, I walked around the building and found the correct unit which I had not toured and this turned out to be my new apartment. I was shocked that Khalil had pulled a bait-and-switch by having me tour a unit and told me over text that this was the unit I was leasing, only to find out I had signed a completely different unit. I walk around and see a GAS stove. I send a picture to Khalil who states that since I signed it in the lease, I would have to pay for cooking gas anyways. I reached out to Darrin C. and expressed my frustrations about the cooking gas misinformation and he said that since I signed it in the lease, tough, they were not going to do anything. They did not offer anything to correct Khalil's mistakes and were not even interested in attempting to make anything right in this situation. A few weeks later, another resident pounds on my back door, looks into my window, and screams at me, threatens me, and accuses me of stealing her electronics from the laundry room in the basement. I had no idea what she was talking about and hadn't left my apartment all day. I reached out to the leasing office through email to report this matter of resident safety and they did absolutely nothing. I called twice that week and asked when I would get a response and they said that since I didn't have video evidence and didn't know the woman's unit number, they weren't going to do anything. They allegedly have no security cameras covering the property and obviously have no concern for the safety of their residents. The employee I spoke with on the second call reassured me that the property manager would reach out to discuss this. Shockingly, the property manager never did and I never even received the courtesy of an email response that I sent to the office and Darrin. I am incredibly disappointed by Mac Properties, Khalil, and Darrin for providing such a terrible experience so far. It seems that with every issue, Mac Properties only looks out for themselves with no concern for resident experience, safety, or satisfaction. In the past year, our floor has had to be replaced, our bathroom has been flooded from the apartment above (twice), and our breakers are ALWAYS going out. As of now, we are currently on our second month of waiting for the hole in our ceiling to be fixed and our third week of waiting to have our broken cabinet fixed. We have called, made repair appointments, and sent in maintenance requests multiple times. We are now being charged an extra $130 for a late rental payment but when you look into our account you can see we have paid our rent on the first every month. I have also emailed Mac saying that it is within my right to hire an outside company to repair the damages and have the cost of their labor be taken out of my rent. No response. This is my last resort because I cannot keep living like this, our kitchen is small enough without not being able to use the cabinets or be afraid of more ceiling falling onto our heads. I would not recommend this company. I hope this ridiculous review will finally get their attention since all of my other efforts have been in vain read more

Hi everyone, I'd been talking to Mac Properties for about 2 weeks. We had planned on transitioning to a new apartment in Missouri from California. Everything was all set - we were pre-approved and had paid our admission fees. However, there were some issues. Firstly, they charged our debit card twice, totaling $660. I contacted the management in Missouri, and they said they could not return the money until 10 days later, or we could use it towards our first month's rent. Later, the management informed us that we could not be approved for the apartment until we had a job offer in Missouri, even though we were still residents of California. We explained that we had job interviews lined up for our transition week, but they said it was not enough. Overall, I do not recommend moving into this apartment. I will keep everyone updated on whether they return the second portion of our admission fee, which is $350. Update: I received a text from them that the money might not returned until 45 days, just thought everyone should know. read more

My wife and I were tenants of Mac Properties for 3 years. Our experience was awful from beginning to end. This company is solely motivated by profits, and they will dehumanize you and cut any corner possible. When we first were moving into the apartment, the day before we were supposed to move in, a Mac employee called us and said that our place wouldn't be ready for another two weeks. They said we could either cancel the lease or accept their temporary accommodations. We had no choice to delay our move and take the accommodations since we had a moving truck coming. When we finally moved in, the apartment was rank with fumes from the floor being refinished. There were dozens of repairs that needed to be done. After dealing with so many maintenance men who couldn't solve a problem, we bought materials and made fixes ourselves. While living in the building, we experienced so many issues. The elevator in our building was constantly down. Our heat went out frequently. Once we were double charged for rent and then charged late fees on not paying the second charge. We were mysteriously charged "fees" for months before someone told us we were missing a line of text on our insurance policy. The customer support rarely answered our phone calls, chat messages and emails, and problems took months to resolve. We moved out with 4 months left on our lease, and surrendered our keys. A Mac representative advised us to do this, and said that they would make an effort to lease the apartment so that we wouldn't have to pay for a vacant unit. Instead, Mac advertised the availability date for our apartment to the day our lease ended, ensuring we paid the full amount. Furthermore, the sales reps giving tours left the lights on in our vacant apartment, resulting in only dollars of electrical charges. Mac had the audacity to send us the bill as well as a $50 late fee per month, $400 in total. Avoid this unethical, heartless company at all cost. They are a blight on the community. read more

I moved out on the tenth of the month. MAC has yet to pay me what is owed. I've spoken with several MAC accountants and contractors. None will sit to have a face to face with me. Even after scheduling an appointment, I was forced to sit in the lobby and take their phone calls instead. They constantly wasted my time with lies, redirecting me to other departments to stall my refund. Eventually, I took my matters to the bank to dispute the charge. These folks then sent me a bill for a "returned check" fee for monies that were never owed to them in the first place. If you want sky high rent, restaurant grade cockroaches, mice in your dishwasher, and mold in your bathroom, MAC is the place to be. But honestly, I do not recommend. read more

I am a tenant with Mac Properties in Chicago and have experienced a consistent pattern of unresolved habitability problems, billing issues, and poor communication since moving in. Shortly after my lease began, I found both live and dead roaches in my kitchen, ants near my windows, and a dead mouse in the bathroom closet. Pest control was minimal--limited to sticky traps and spray--with no confirmation that licensed professionals were used or that entry points were sealed. There was no documentation or follow-up provided. I also reported a leak in my entry hallway, and a strong rotten egg smell continues to come from a utility access point inside the apartment. I still haven't been told whether this odor is related to gas or sewer, nor has any inspection been performed. Shared outdoor areas near my unit are frequently littered with trash and food waste left by other tenants, attracting more pests. The oven in my unit was eventually replaced, but it was delivered without prior notice. The old unit was left in the middle of my kitchen with packaging on top. No one told me when installation would be completed or cleaned up behind themselves. On July 31, I submitted my rent through Mac's app using my savings account. I copied and pasted the correct banking info and confirmed the funds were available. I followed up by phone and was told the payment was processing. Days later, I was told it had failed due to insufficient funds. A staff member eventually said the problem may have been caused by copying and pasting the account details. This was never disclosed anywhere in the payment system. I was forced to repay using a card, incurring a $25 fee, and was charged a late fee, even though I paid on time. Apartment searching is stressful as it is, but what makes it even more stressful is dealing with an employee with a shitty attitude. I didn't like her vibe after viewing one unit. My intuition told me not to move forward, but I was still "possibly" open since I like some of their units elsewhere. Today confirmed exactly why I'm glad that I did not move forward ; Victoria called me today with a very sarcastic, nice nasty & condescending attitude as if me applying for units that I AM INTERESTED IN was bothering her. I would think that ignoring her emails and lease application would showcase that I am not interested in moving forward with her, clearly she didn't get the hint -- which is what the slick remarks and frustration came from. I usually pride myself on being professional but not today. Not sure if she thought I was a pushover or something but she had the wrong person today. I reserved the freight elevator as advised to have my sofa removed. The mgr was off and told me to call Resident Services & they'd send someone over to operate the freight elevator. NO ONE came. After living in a Mac Properties apartment for a year, my list of positive aspects about them is very limited while my list of negatives could fill a book. When trying to contact any member of management do not expect clear communication, responsiveness, concern, or consistency. I stopped counting the amount of times I would try to call and would end up hanging up due to no one answering the phone. When my apartment got broken into while I was out of the city, they had little to no concern about the incident and were hesitant to give me ANY information about the state of my apartment aside from the door being open. When trying to communicate about any specific issue with their resident services or call center, I found the communication between ANYONE to be convoluted and inconsistent. I would have to call back multiple times a week to get a simple situation figured out due to no one continuing to work on my issue and leaving someone else to deal with it. In general I would recommend renting through literally anyone else. The only positive I had when living at this property was getting to see Shandra in the mail room. They have intentionally deceptive renting policies. I indicated I was interested in an apartment and they immediately asked to see a $550 "admin fee" up front. When I refused and asked to see an example lease first, they revealed that the rent was $250 higher than they advertised in their listing. If I had paid that fee, it would have been non-refundable, and they intentionally misled people into paying it and then realizing that they are out of their budget. read more

I'm a resident living in paramour apartment (4850 S Drexel Blvd). We just moved in this semptember and up till now I have four packages stolen in this building. I'm sure they were stolen by someone inside the building because those packages are inside the locked front gate. This is outrageous and I've been reporting every single incident. Every time I was told to have my packages sent to the kenwood office. But this would be extremely inconvenient for me as I don't have a vehicle. And to let the thief have their way, to let them get away with multiple thefts is unacceptable. the whole stolen package experience makes me feel really disgusted. I would suggest setting up a secure package system here at paramour apartments. I know a lot of walk up buildings in Hyde park have already done that too and I'm surprised this building hasn't already, since I know it has been just refurbished. We've been leasing with Mac properties for three years. We really hope Mac would not let us down. The past month of living here is really not pleasant with our package being constantly stolen. Not once, not twice, but four times! I would expect the situation to be worse more if we hadn't try to get downstairs the minute we got a delivery notification. read more

I've been a loyal Mac resident since 2018. Similar to other reviewers on here, I will be breaking ties with all Mac-related things after my lease is up. I truly believe that Mac Properties as a whole does not care about their renters and customers, and instead cares more about profit margin and making their investors happy. A large part of the trust that we've built over the years together was demolished in the last few months due to a horrible resident services experience with Ruth. I've been communicating with Ruth since January 2022, attempting to resolve ongoing noise issues with my next-door neighbor that started back in November 2021. (see more details in my Del Prado review) During my interactions, I constantly felt disrespected, belittled, and treated unfairly. I felt my opinion/feelings didn't matter to her, and that she was annoyed and bothered when talking with her (her messages would be riddled with errors in spelling and grammar). She was blindly following ineffective steps that were clearly not working for this case. And failing to recognize that the situation was escalating, Ruth continued to downplay my ongoing complaints until things reached a boiling point. On their website, one of Mac's values is "It's personal - We're dedicated to each resident, one universe at a time." I felt the complete opposite in my case, and felt it was a dehumanizing experience. After 3 months, I had to escalate my case to a manager (who was helpful and empathetic), and thankfully had the case reassigned. I honestly don't like that I'm making this review, as I believe there are genuinely good people who work here. However, I feel it's right to share my experience with others as a warning. I used to think Mac truly cared about my well-being as a long-time resident and appreciated how it provided good jobs to the Hyde Park community. Now I see them for what they are; a programmed machine that grows like a virus. I can't stress this enough; avoid Mac Properties at all costs, and don't feed their greed. read more

They add random charges to your rent, hope you don't notice, and when you do, they don't do anything about it. They say they'll fix it but the overcharges keep coming. I used to think it was a problem with their software but it's actually just mismanagement if not deliberate. They have a monopoly in Hyde Park so their business model seems to be to steal from University of Chicago students and workers. The whole business is horribly run with the facade of competency and care. The worst of it is Solstice on the Park where they try to overcharge unknowing foreign students. read more

The absolute worst property management company in Chicago. I was a tenant at Del Prado from 2012-2014 and they made my life a nightmare in those three years. They will do anything, no matter how illegal it is, as long as it benefits them and they think they'll get away with it. There was black mold growing in my apartment for over six months and they essentially did nothing about it. Eventually, after complaining for months, I threatened to sue. They then installed a massive dehumidifier in my apartment, which was noisy and used over $2000 in electricity that they never compensated me for. It also didn't fix the source of the problem, which was a crack in the facade that was letting water into my unit under the carpet whenever it rained. The only reason why I didn't sue is because as a 19 year old, I was intimidated by them and didn't want to waste the little energy I had on a legal battle. They depend on most of their tenants being university students or people living paycheck-to-paycheck, because they're less likely to be sued by either of those groups. read more

they continually raise rent while the quality and cleanliness of their properties gets worse every year. Promised amenities disappear, laundry facilities stay broken down for weeks or months, trash and stripped bicycles are left for months if not years. Rats? Oh, we've got those, and if you try to report them, the person on the phone, who has never even been to the building, will cut you off to tell you that you mean mice, and they will do nothing about them. If you experience bedbugs, they will not inform your neighbors (and vice versa) unless you threaten to call the health department. If their contractors don't show up to do management mandated work, which happens often, they will threaten your lease (in writing, and sometimes via their lawyer) for their own incompetency. The buildings are in poor condition, pipes leak and break constantly causing hundreds if not thousands of dollars of damage, but despite requiring tenants to have renter's insurance, they will not release damage reports to you, and will ignore any requests not made by the insurance company. They forcibly sell tenant's information via "required insurance verification" to a new "Verification company" pretty much every year. Said companies are invariably shady no-name insurance companies with dozens of legal and BBB complaints against them that harass you to buy their service. Their maintenance staff are nice, and generally helpful, but that can't make up for everything else. You will not get what you pay for, and you will be harassed and abused for the privilege. read more

I gave them one star because I couldn't give HALF of a star. We lived at the Del Prado on 53rd and Hyde Park Blvd for two years ending in February of 2020. We were nervous to live in an apartment during the pandemic. Mac Property made it nearly impossible to leave our lease. Newly married, we purchased a home and were expecting our first baby in a few months. Pregnant wife--they don't care, "pay us." We're between jobs because of covid-19, "pay us." The options for breaking our lease were complicated and expensive. We received a notice that we owed over $7,500 for the last few months of the lease. They're no one to negotiate on their side. That past due amount is now owned by Hunter Warfield Collection Agency. So, do your best to work with a company that won't put you in debt. read more

For 900+ a month, you can pay to live in a barely maintained property. Mac loves to impress with the amenities, like providing residents with broken washing machines (the two machines pictured have been out of service for at least two months - note that one is filled with water, making an excellent breeding ground for pests). In addition to non-functioning machines, the laundry room will also greet residents with a literal stream of sh*t, also pictured. A picture is worth a thousand words, but if only I could share the stench, which says it all. Slumlords abound in Chicago - find yourself one who won't make doing laundry a public health hazard. read more

BLACK MOLD & LEAD ISSUE IN REGENTS PARK!!! (There's videos as well) My family and I were currently renting a 2bdrm 2ba from MacProperties @ Regents Park for $2593/mo. We have had a black mold issue in our unit 2x since we moved in Jan 2021. The first time, there was a huge black streak on the living room wall. Maintenance came 2021 to paint over it until I asked for a new wall. They came back and tore only that piece out behind the wall it was completely wet, the maintenance man didn't replace it with green board just dapped it dry with a rag. During this time I was currently pregnant with my daughter who is now 1yr old and was suffering migraines the entire time. This year end of July 2022 my daughter was walking around playing and dropped something behind my husband's surround sound speaker. I went to move the speaker and noticed mold again in the same wall this time on the bottom and vent. We immediately put In a service request to have it repaired. The issue was delayed and both me and my husband were putting service requests in. This time we decided to hire a mold specialist ($475) who came to take samples indoor and outdoor in which he concluded in his report (we provided to the management company) the black mold severe, the air quality is terrible and something needs to be done ASAP. We were consistent in contacting maintenance but 1 person again came to pain and another person came with a rag and spray can, NOT TO CORRECTLY fix the problem. We contacted the property mgr James Ellsberry, he offered to reimburse the money we paid for the specialist. We asked if we could be moved but he said he'd have to reach out to leasing to see if that's possible. He also said there's about 80 or more other units with reported mold. The leasing manager Rebecca Kobe called me with the options of being transferred to another unit either downgrade from our or upgrade from ours either way they dont price match and it's nothing else she can do. Days later another young lady called and offered if we want to early end our lease because of the mold problem we could pay $4,000. We immediately contacted a Chicago Tenants Law attorney because this company has no reasonable accommodations and are negligent to leasing agreements. I explained i have a 1yr old, I'm currently pregnant (high risk) and this issue has caused illness for my daughter, husband and myself. I gave them doctors statements as well but no help whatsoever just basically for us to keep paying them. My attorney submitted a 14day letter to the management company in which today Sept 30, 2022 it has expired. read more

People, hear me: DO NOT LIVE HERE. I made the mistake of not thoroughly looking into MAC property management before we moved and it was a terrible decision. One good thing about our apartment on Drexel is that the workers are pretty good about shoveling the sidewalk during winter. One good thing about the management is that they were pretty helpful (sending pictures and videos of the apartment) before I signed the lease because we were coming from Texas and couldn't make it up to view anything beforehand. Now, for the important stuff: * The walls are incredibly thin and you can hear just about everything your neighbors are doing...THIS IS NOT AN EXAGGERATION. Forgot to set your alarm in the morning? No problem! Just wait for your neighbor's alarm to go off so y'all can get up together! * The floors are wood (which is nice for spills and such), but they are also old and super creaky. So, if your neighbor's alarm isn't enough to wake you up, his or her walking on the floor will. * If you complain to management about loud neighbors throwing parties or making excessive noise, nothing will really be done. Call the police and then keep calling the police. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. * There are rats in the building during the summer/fall months and management does not really care to fix the problem. They like to make it seem as if they care and will call an ineffectual pest/rodent control company to put a few glue traps down. We ended up having to set bait and then maintenance did not come to remove the rat (as we were told they would). * Rent is kind of pricey considering all the issues in the buildings and low quality throughout the apartments. I'll admit I liked the space but, TRUST ME, you can find a nice amount of space for a much higher quality apartment. * The fitness center is a joke with a treadmill and elliptical. The multi-purpose machine for weights is often broken and it may be months before it is actually fixed. If you like the idea of a fitness center, but not the ability to actually use it...this is the place for you. :) * The front gate is often broken. If a false sense of security is what you desire, RENT HERE! In addition, the directory that people are supposed to use to call you at the gate frequently malfunctions and you have to get up and go let your guests in. Complaining about this to management typically takes 3-4 weeks for them to fix. * So, recently, MAC fixed the front gate and installed a tension type of device that made the gate hard to push open when you're trying to leave. Yesterday (June 25) MAC "fixed" the gate to where it would not open AT ALL (from the inside OR the outside). I literally had to climb the fence to get in...RIDICULOUS. BUT, if you enjoy unpredictability...move here!! * Recently, there was a new rule implemented that if you submit an online maintenance request, you must allow maintenance people to enter your apartment regardless of if you are home. They do not clean up after themselves and may even leave a gift to indicate they were there...such as pee on your toilet seat! They do some quality work, people. * The free internet often goes out and you have to be home in order for someone to come to your place and fix it. I guess you really do get what you pay for. * Management here is very lax and the office staff does not always seem to know what they're doing. Some of the people are pretty friendly but, let's get real, being friendly doesn't make up for all the other hassles that are MAC Property Management. I've since moved out, but will update this review if necessary (like if they coincidentally decide to send me notifications of any charges--which they shouldn't because I created a document and had the manager sign indicating that I didn't owe anything). read more

Decided to rent from MAC properties in Hyde Park since it was a beautiful area and close to mine and my partner's job....this has been a nightmare. Let me explain: I have seen multiple water bugs in my apartment due to the plumbing issues throughout the building. I see them at least once, if not twice, a month and submit a complaint each time. Instead of replacing the pipes, they send out pest control to spray the perimeter which does not help at all because its not getting to the root of the problem. They are coming up from the DRAINS, not from outside. They say its a common problem, but I actually have owned a small rental property on the far south side for the last 3 years and have never seen a water bug (my building is 110 years old and I am in the process of having the pipes replaced simply because they were old). We have also had multiple water leaks due to the faulty pipes and also had brown water coming from the kitchen sink. Once again, maintenance says that the pipes need to be replaced, but MAC is not budging. Again, I care enough about MY tenants to get the pipes replaced, so hearing this from MAC is a slap in the face especially when they charge well over $1100 for at least 10+ units in this building. I have a 2 unit building with only 1 unit occupied ($1000 per month in rent), and I care about that tenant and her child enough to make sure that they have clean water. I will be reaching out to 311 and seeking legal assistance. Pest control and water leaks are definitely city code violations, and if MAC won't do anything, I am sure the City will at least fine them until they can get it together. read more

I would say this is the worst mgmt company I have ever had to deal with. , you can't get ahold of any managers that are in charge. They have validated my sons disability rights. Have promised over and over again that they were willing to work with us to get a bigger place so that the lease would not get broken. I am my sons POA who was shot in the Lincoln Park shooting this May. My mother already leaves in a Mac residence so we wanted to stay with the same mgmt company but get her a 2 bedroom. Because of my Sons disability and needing a wheelchair the current building is not wheelchair accessible. It has been a whole month and no one from Mac has tried to work with our family. I say stay away from them especially if you have a disability because they will violate it. read more

Mac Property, although seemingly for the Hyde Park community, has proven itself yet another covetous entity. At the beginning of the pandemic, they were quick on the task of ensuring that they would be of help if there were any issues in regard to paying rent. As the days went on, their messaging changed to encouraging us to pay rent because they needed to "pay their workers", which disregards the financial downturn which effects the individual residences directly. My roommate and I have been pushed around to different departments with the promise of working with us during this time, however, have continuously not been given a solution. Each person we have discussed our issue with, we have been given copy and pasted responses which include solutions that are entirely irrelevant to our problem. Our current issue, although enhanced because of COVID-19, is not caused because of COVID-19, rather it was a predatory move that resulted in our rent spiking and was put into effect amidst the pandemic. Our request has been simple, but because of the incompetence of this office, it has escalated into a true dispute. The leasing agents cannot communicate effectively without a prewritten response. Whether they are not trained properly, or given the autonomy to make decisions, or they are purely just not fit for the position, these office workers are not able to handle questions outside of where to pay one's rent and how to make a work order. We have been given the run around with no direct contact to a representative that can be of true help, though we've asked repeatedly not to be directed to a "department" rather a person, this has fallen on deaf ears over and over again. The last email that was sent (today) requested we sign a nondisclosure, which is why I'm on this platform writing this warning to residence who are thinking of signing a lease with MAC. This situation only highlights that MAC is nothing more than a slum lord masked as a human focused rental company. I have lived here for close to 3 years, and whenever you have a problem, you are basically on your own. the office manager/maintenance manager is no help at all. I have a problem with a tenant that lives above me that is a chain smoker. We share plumbing and so all the smoke has been streaming into my apartment since December 2023 and to date nothing has been done about it. I don't smoke and I am forced to inhale the 2nd hand smoke from 2 people. Additionally, my apartment smells like a big dirty filthy ash tray, all of my leather furniture, carpeting, curtains, comforters are filled with smoke. I also live over a laundry room and people are in the laundry room from 5am to 3am daily, so I hear the machines and the door constantly slamming and the machine lids constantly slamming. The lock on the door stays broken so anyone can enter. They also smoke in the laundry room. The Maintenance/ office Manager/ Super and Asst. claim they don't smell anything. How convenient. Needless to say. If you need to accomplish anything you will have to call the state, the police, Fire dept etc. because you are on your own. To date nothing has been done and I have written to corporate, and they have that the matter is in process. I guess in process of killing me. That is the truth. Before this incident we had a man that went dumpster diving that would drag garbage out of the dumpster and line it all up in the hallways and against the back of our building. He also has spiritual awakenings and would walk around all night with work boots on with no carpeting on the second floor where carpeting is required. After 8 months of complaining about the noise the office finally got him and the current people to get carpeting. They can care less about what you are going through. Pay your Rent and pay it on time that is all they are concerned with. This place is being run like a low-class ghetto. read more

I only gave 1 star because 0 isn't an option. These are the most incompetent individuals on the planet. They will charge you for things you don't owe, they are the opposite of helpful when it comes to needing assistance, and they don't understand how to read their own leases. I've rented from Mac for the past 3 years and never once did I have a good experience with them. I only rented from them because they effectively have a monopoly on the Hyde Park apartment market. They should be sued for their criminal negligence and predatory practices. Good riddance to them and thank god I no longer am a Mac Properties renter. read more

I wish I could give this company 0 stars. Horrible customer service, no one will ever be up front with you. They lied about redoing all the wiring in the Algonquin buildings just to be shut down by ComEd for illegally pursuing those wiring issues. (Google Algonquin in Hyde Park and you'll see it all over the news.) They left families in the dark and the cold on Christmas because THEIR wiring posed safety issues. The situation was so bad they allowed us to break our leases because they could not guarantee we would get back into our apartment. When we went to collect our things our door was often left completely unlocked so anyone else coming and going from the building could enter our apartment. We would get 30 minute time increments to go and collect our ruined items in the dark. Even the gift cards and other "help" they offered was useless since they deemed me "ineligible" because I was NOT opting to move to another Mac Property. Now after finally getting out from under Mac Properties, they are too incompetant to respond to any previous landlord verification requests. Despite it being a standard request for previous tenants, not a single person I talked to seemed to understand what I was asking for. I applied for multiple apartments and every third party system that was used came back as "Landlord Unreachable." It's truly a shame no one filed a lawsuit against this company for their abhorrent practices. read more
