The team here is caring and professional. I have naturally curly hair and often have difficulty finding people who have skills. Stephanie is fantastic for my hair! I've also seen her work miracles on people with straight hair as well. Laura is a magician for my tween girl. We came in and my daughter had lots of knots. Mac daddy staff are friendly and service is prompt. Like any salon, the quality depends on the stylist. I have gone to two different stylists there. The first one I wasn't happy with because I didn't feel she handled the texture of my hair properly when it comes to color. The next time I tried Emily and have been going to her ever since. Emily takes my ideas and always guides me in a better direction. She considers my skin tones and tells me what is and isn't possible. I came in for the second time recently and loved it! When I first came I needed to dye my whole head one color to hide the red and I wanted dark brown but got black which was fine because I don't get too attached to my hair. They wash and blow dry too which is my favorite part. When I came this past week I had Finn who gave me cute layers and styled my hair beautifully. For $65 I think you get a lot done in usually under or a little over an hour. They are very thorough when washing your head and even added product before styling (my hair feels so soft). Went in for a bang cut and I felt really rushed. I was done in literally 6 minutes and it woulda been sooner if I didn't ask her to keep cutting. I had to have her make adjustments 3 times. And after each adjustment it felt like she was trying to be done and didn't really sit back and ask how I felt about it in a calm patient way. To the point where on the last cut I was sitting up straight leaning forward because I couldn't really relax. And mid-hair cut (so like 4 minutes in), the receptionist came up and told her her next appointment was there. Which just made me feel even more rushed. This is THE BEST my hair has ever felt or looked. I've been wanting red hair for a while now. I walked in with golden blonde hair and walked out with exactly what I wanted. Not only that, but Emily (who is INCREDIBLE oh my god) did my entire family's hair. We all got what we wanted by the end and we are all extremely happy with the results. I'm a 50-year-old professional single mom. I love this place and here are the reasons: It's upscale but unpretentious -- it is open and airy but also neighborhoody. The salon always features interesting art and photography on the walls. Good coffee, good magazine selection, friendly people all around. The stylists are skilled and friendly -- I see Lillian and she unfailingly gives me great colors and cuts (I have a spring-summer color and a fall-winter color -- she always gets it right). My job won't allow me to have an edgy cut, but Lillian makes sure I don't emerge with an "aging mom cut" either. I can bring all three of my kids here. My 20-year-old daughter sees Renee, who is a master of highlights. My 17-year-old son likes Dave (my son also loves to visit the used record store across the street when his cut is done). My 12-year-old daughter has had many different stylists, but she has never been unhappy. The prices are reasonable ($60 for color touch-ups; about $45 for my cuts; $25 for my son's cuts) and they will trim your bangs for free in between cuts (mostly to deter you from attempting to do it yourself) It is not difficult to find parking and there are some great shops to browse if you need to kill time while your loved one gets a cut. There are two antique shops, the funky Cyclopx (used records, vintage toys), and my favorite - Madison Street Shoes (great selection and a great sale rack). read more

I am very disappointed by the service I received. I am not one to leave a bad review and although my stylist was kind I don't think she interpreted what I wanted well. We had a discussion and I showed her the attached picture as to what I envisioned. She mentioned that it might be too light so to avoid damage she would try to do something similar but lighter and a partial highlight which I agreed to but I wanted the colors to blend into my hair and cover a few of my grays. I didn't want my hair to have dark blonde or yellow. It took me about 3 weeks to admit that I didn't really like the color because I didn't want to admit that the stylist didn't do a good job because again she is very sweet but I paid $180 which is expensive for what I received and very upsetting. I called to see if it could be corrected and they said they would charge me "$45" to tone it. I don't think that is fair, it really says something about the salon. I don't think "toning" would fix my issue and let alone have to put for something that wasn't done correctly is kind of upsetting. I wouldn't recommend this salon. read more

Ah, the infamous words of the beloved Kris Kross circa 1992 Unfortunately my experience with this MacDaddy did not make me feel like jumping. I came in and knew it was going to be bad news when I saw two stylists working on a total of three people and two people waiting. I guess I just don't like making an appointment if it's not going to be honored. If you're behind then call me and I will come later. Overbooking isn't cool in my opinion. Although I described my particular hair type to the stylist she seemed unprepared and not very knowledgeable. I was shocked when she was brushing my tight curls and yanking my head all over like I was a doll "does that hurt"?Umm, Ya think? She had to stop in the midst of doing my hair to go and cut someone else while I sat their looking like a freaking scarecrow browsing US Weekly. The best part of my experience here was the receptionist/shampoo-ist/intern Michael. He was really nice, talkative, friendly and seemed to know his stuff though still in hair school (he flat ironed part of my hair) The finished product is just ok and honestly at the level I'd expect from a student. I got home and had to do a few additional things to add a bit of shine and control some frizz. I think this salon could be perfect for someone who has average/normal hair. Jennifer, my hair SAVIOR, is back in action! I have to applaud her choice of new salon. It doesn't feel pretentious at all. The staff are all very welcoming. I really like the space. It's bright and open. They feature local artist's work on the walls and rotate it every so often. The music is groovy, but not so loud that you can't hear what your stylist is saying to you. Jennifer has such a keen sense of what kind of cut and color are appropriate for you. See will be honest in her suggestions and opinions. As always - I left feeling great and 10000 times more beautiful than I did walking in. Michael is a terrific assistant and his positive attitude in infectious. They also have nail services here. I needed a haircut on short notice and made an appointment for the same day. It was my first time to MacDaddy, and I took notice of the pleasant receptionist and relaxed atmosphere in the salon. Stephanie was my stylist and I am so pleased I got her. She listened to my concerns and desires, made suggestions, and didn't make any faces when I told her I had been cutting my own hair. I have thick, frizzy, and hard-to-control hair that doesn't want to conform to a hairstyle, but Stephanie worked a small miracle on it. She transformed my unruly mop into a soft, swingy, face-flattering 'do that kept me flipping my head and humming 'Who's that Lady' the entire walk home (peep that profile pic). Stephanie is everything you want in a stylist- friendly, fun, professional, and, most importantly, talented. I cannot recommend her enough. I saw Renee because Amanda was out of town and there was a huge miscommunication during my appointment. I showed a picture of a longer angled bob and unfortunately that is not what I have now. I did mention I wanted the overall length shorter but definitely wanted the front long.(hence angled bob.) My hair coming into the salon was long and straight with a pretty blonde on the ends-I have no more blonde because she gave me choppy layers in the front and my hair looks like a 5 year old's with no angle. Also, after she cut the front and dropped the hair down so I could see I told her I wanted it long, not short pieces in the front and she said my hair when I came in was short pieces in the front...ugggh no lady. This cut is so botched and pisses me off I wasted $60 and I look like a gd idiot now.. I won't be seeing Renee again. I reached out to Stephanie just to tell her about my recent visit and how horrible my haircut is and she was very understanding. Although I can't get my hair back she rectified the situation best she could and I appreciate that. It's obvious she cares about her business and clients. I live in Chicago, but travel 10 miles to visit MacDaddy Salon in Forest Park. I've been a client of Nelson's for at least 10 years. The reason for my loyalty and willingness to travel (when there are tons of salons closer to my home) is primarily Nelson's talent. I have gray hair, which could be aging if not properly cut and styled. But with Nelson's suggestion, I keep it quite short and the comments I receive are the more preferable, "hip" "great looking." The salon itself is modern and attractive with rotating art exhibits, which makes my regular visits interesting. He's just added a sound bar so clients can tune in to the latest music. Saw stephanie for the first time this weekend. I went in with a mop of hair and the thought that i want to cut it to encourage the curling because i haven't been blow drying lately and that i wasn't married to the length. Unfortunately i think stephanie may have underestimated the curl in my hair - I'm not sure - it is too short so it springs up all at one length and just makes my face look wider. Stephanie was super nice and great to chat with, the salon was clean and relaxed, and overall it was a great experience. Unfortunately I'm left with flat-ironing my hair once i get to work because it springs into curls and looks like a poof mop and my goal was to continue air drying like when I came in - just with more shape and less split ends. read more

After my initial visit Nelson stopped cutting hair, unfortunately. I left the salon for a bit but returned a year ago and started going to Emily. She gives me a great cut and blow dry, and always makes me feel great about my hair! However I dislike dealing with the salon's reception/appt booking staff. Seems like it's never the same person, and when there is limited availability they aren't very adept at suggesting open alternatives. I hate throwing out date after date after date and... nothing. I am a mom of three, I am a teacher. This may surprise you but, No. I don't have time in the morning to style my hair. I have a wash and go routine. However, I've had a boring bob for most of a year and was ready to chop and go back to a pixie cut to get the hair off my shoulders. I had a pixie about 6 years ago and knew I'd like it. Ready for the fun and excitement of a big hair change, I took a chance and booked an appointment after hearing about this salon and having not found a go to stylist in the area as of yet. I met the stylist who asked me for pictures, I showed some different pixie cuts just for reference of shape, sideburn length etc and overall feel. She became negative and told me short cuts require more maintenance than long. She claimed that I might be disappointed by a pixie cut if I don't style my hair because it won't look like the pics I brought in. (As if I can bring in pics of non styled hair - those don't exist on the internet) My excitement level now in the toilet thanks to a stylist who can't seem to be positive and state what CAN work about a short pixie for a busy working mom. Thanks but no thanks! I left and will not be going back. You don't deserve to cut my hair, let alone give me a big length style change after taking the wind out of my sails. I over paid for a haircut from a stylist who did something I could've done to myself at home. Although I walked in about 2 minutes late because I was parking they also said I had to pay extra for a thermal service which doesn't make sense if I paid 65 for a half assed haircut and blowout. Not even a straight line across my head. And not to mention the way she worded "well you walked in late and I have another client so a thermal service isn't possible to add" that was a very rude way to put it. I love getting my hair cut at MacDaddy. Meghan is so fantastic- I've never had anyone give me such consistently great haircuts. She always listens to what I want and then does it- no surprises. Also, she always takes her time giving me a really good blow out- my hair is thick and takes forever to dry, so other people always seem to give up halfway through and I walk out the door with half-dry, frizzy hair. Not here! Love her. The salon itself is great- the people at the desk are always really nice, and they are always accommodating when I call for an appointment. I don't have to call weeks in advance to make an appt. for a cut, which is awesome, because that drove me nuts at my last place. The space is nice- modern and trendy without being cold or snobby. The rotating featured art on the walls is always cool, and gives you something interesting to look at while you're getting cut. I have been to MacDaddy twice and had my haircut with Renée. I have been very happy with the outcome on both occasions! The first time I went from a longer-than-shoulder-length style to a pixie cut, which was a pretty drastic change. Renée was very careful to ask lots of questions and look at lots if pictures to see what I was really envisioning for my new look. She took her time and checked in with me a lot throughout the cut to make sure I was happy with how it was turning out. I really appreciated her careful attention to my wishes, but I appreciated even more that she wasn't afraid to speak up and say what she thought would look good on me too. She also gave me a great product recommendation in a no-pressure way and gave me a tip on dealing with my cowlicks that has made styling my hair so much easier! When I came back for a reshaping and trim, she did just as great a job if asking good questions to make sure she really understood what I wanted. After having the same haircut for many years, I wanted something different. I decided on bangs and was very scared to move forwards with this. I went to Mac Daddy and Gail was my stylist. She gave me long bangs with a swept look. So I can part it in the middle, left or right side. I really do like it a lot. Gail knows what she's doing!
