The stylist had just finished lunch and was engaged in a conversation about how she made cheesecake; she sliced my hair as if she were cutting cheesecake. I have been coming to Sara's Hair Salon for quite some time now. Usually the same gentleman does my hair. I get a blow dry straight and a slight flat iron. A deep conditioner or hot oil treatment is necessary as flat ironing and blow drying without a heat protectant can badly damaged hair. I love going to Sara's to have the same person doing my hair rather than get a new stylist. He knows my hair already and in addition flat ironing the hair at home can also be damaging. I never complain about price increase or prices changes because I know it's quite time consuming doing Natural African American hair. My last experience Tuesday August 15th was very unfortunate. My hair was already washed, conditioned, deep conditioned in addition to a hot oil treatment. My hair stylist blow dried my hair, flat iron and trim the ends which was badly needed. My hair was beautiful. My problem was when I went to deep conditioner my hair a few days later, on my own, my natural curl pattern didn't revert. I thought maybe on my next wash day along with deep conditioner my hair would revert back. Unfortunately it didn't happen. I went August 15th and my hair as of October 18th didn't revert. Unhappily I had to cut approximately 5 inches off my hair my self. However when I went to Hair Cuttery and they noticed I still have much more to be cut while my hair isn't completely damage free since more of it is concentrated on the roots. I do think Sara's is an okay salon if you have relaxed thick hair and can stand lots of heat however if you are natural be aware of potential damage. I'm very hysterical as well as flabbergasted about the condition of my hair however I learned a valuable lesson never put heat to my hair as well as never go to a salon for any blow outs just do it at home. I primarily went to Sara's because I felt as if they honestly cared for natural hair however Its saddening to realize deep conditioner, and hot oil treatments are only offered because it's convenient and easier for them to manage natural hair. First let me start by saying I am an African American woman who has natural hair.I have 4a/4b texture and have been in my natural start since 2006. I have very thick yet long hair but I usually wear twists,braids,and big curly fros.I wanted to try something new since I just moved to Chicago.I will never go back to a relaxer but I wanted my hair straighten for change. My mother and law suggested this salon and told me that they straighten hair by blowing it out with a blow dryer. So I decided to give it a try.I detangled before I went because my hair is very thick and fragile.They first washed my hair like 3 times and then deep conditioned. After that the woman who was washing my hair,starting to comb my hair to prepare for the next lady to blow it out.She started combing my hair with a wide tooth comb from root to tip and I almost went crazy. I stopped her and told her that she can't comb my hair like that.She has to comb from tip to root too prevent my hair from breaking off.She started combing again the same way.So now I'm furious because she's acting like she can't understand english. I asked her if she would give me the comb so I can comb my own hair.She gave me the comb and I got out of the chair to sit in another chair to comb my hair in peace.Anyway,the blow dryer person said as I'm combing " no no no just comb it all one way".I'm like this lady need to shut up talking to me about MY hair. I knew then that they didn't care about taking care of hair. They just wanted money and didn't promote healthy hair at all.So after I finish I got in the chair,I noticed a round bristle brush.She put some heat protecting cream on my hair and then she starting brushing and blowing. The blow dryer was up to the max and the heat was extreme.I have never had heat that hot before. This woman was very rough with my hair with the tugging and pulling. I could just feel my hair ripping and I was looking down to see if I saw my hair on the floor.I didn't see much hair but I think it was breaking off in that brush.So she finished and my hair was down to the middle of my back.I got my split ends clipped and the last part was when this man in another chair started to curl my hair.So that's blow drying and curling iron.That is alot of heat and the finish product was beautiful.However,I hated the experience and I will never go back.All of their customers were AA women spending a hefty amount of money. These people don't care about healthy hair especially natural hair.They just want your money and that's all. My head is still hurting because of all the pulling from root to tip.My mother in law took me there as a gift but I will never go back. read more

Sara's is a great place to get a quick do if you are in a rush. No need to spend 4-5 hours in a regular salon. You are in and out within an hour and a half. Just a quick wash and blow dry is $35! And if you want a relaxer its $55. And you choose either a deep conditioner or clipped ends for free. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is that you need to bring your own brushes. By them blowing drying everyone's head the never clean or sanitize their brushes. Other than that the shop is great. read more

My hair is full of life, flow & bounce and not weighed down with all that oil. I love my hair & since I have been going to them, my hair has been growing like a weed. I have had great experiences every time in the last two years I've visited this salon . The salon is maintained and clean. I tend to visit around 11:00am during the week so the place is not crowded with customers. Even when their is five people there, I have gotten serviced and ready to leave in a little over one hour. I am quite please with the service and styling of my natural hair. The staff is considerate and assist me when I arrive because of my use of a cane. One staffer went out of his way and even assisted me across the street because of two way traffic on a wide street. The price of service is great. read more

TRUE STORY FROM THE DIARY OF A MAD WOMAN: I needed my hair done quickly and couldn't seem to arrange a time with my regular hair dresser, Aretha Cephus. I've only "cheated" on her 3 or 4 times but when I do I always tell her! And when I cheated those few times I've always gone to Sara's Egyptian Salon in Oak Park, IL (on the corner of Madison Between Austin and Ridgeland). My hair is natural (no perm or chemicals and has been that way for years) I've never had an issue in a pinch. Well, this particular day, I called to confirm the price and hours because it has been over a year since I'd been to Sara's. I told the person on the phone that I wanted a wash and blow dry and that's it. The man on the phone said the price was $35. I repeated, "$35 for a wash and set right?" He said "yes, what time are you coming?" I told him I'd be there within the hour. I arrived at the salon and didn't recognize a soul. The place was being operated by a new man and a new shampoo girl who immediately asked me "have you been here before" when I walked through the door. I said yes took a smock and set in the chair to have my hair washed. While she washed my hair she barely scrubbed my scalp and I asked her to do it harder. She looked at me and again asked, "have you been here before?" I said yes again and she just continued to half wash my hair and then said, "you want the deep conditioning" I said no. Just a regular wash and set. She set a towel on my head and pointed to the man's chair. I went to the chair and he started to pick at my head! Pulling it all over the place. Then started to blow dry it and burned me twice. I thought "maybe its because I haven't been here in a long time" but I knew better because Aretha does my hair without incident on the regular. I continued reading my Kindle when suddenly I heard the sound of scissors! I looked up and he said "I'm cutting your ends, no charge." My eye got big! "What are you doing?! I didn't ask you to do that! I have to leave!" He's response, "no charge" At this point my hair would be lopsided if I left it the way he started! My hair was a little bit longer than shoulder length! I had not choice but to let him continue! Now my hair is up to my chin! MY CHIN!!!! That's NOT cutting my ends!!! At this point I'm livid! He finishes my hair and then says, "$45" My immediate response was "What?! Its $35!" The shampoo girls sits at the desk and says "$45" I again explained that I called and was told $35 and they man that did my hairs says, "I am the person you talked to and I own. I said $35 but did not know you had natural hair and that is harder to do so it is $45" Now we are in a full argument because I said, "where in the hell does it say that in this place?! There is no sign that says that!" The girl at the desk says, "You should have asked. That's why it says $35 and up." My eyes got huge and pointed out there should be truth in advertising! There is NOTHING that said $45 for natural hair! Then he says, "Permed hair is $35, natural is $45 and sometimes more." Our argument persists and I explained "I don't have a problem paying for a service but I called and you gave me one price. You should have explained the tiered pricing when I called. Even when I sat down you should have stated that but you didn't" He response was, "I clipped your ends for free $45. I will give you $10 off your next time." I shrieked! "There will NEVER be a 'next time' I will NEVER come back here again! I can't believe this! You didn't clip my ends! You cut my hair! AND IT DIDN'T NEED IT!" The girl says,"I don't know what to tell you lady, you should have asked what the 'and up' means. Its $45" I looked at the two of them and paid the bill (I was already late because of this) and stormed out of the store. My hair immediately frizzed within the first hour of leaving and looked like a puff by the end of the TGT concert! I made some calls and YES! They will be looked into! I use to go to this salon every other week and they do a great job at straightening and styling your hair. I always requested to have the owner (whose name escapes me) style my hair. He's stationed at the first booth in the front of the salon. He took pride in his work. I started bringing my own shampoo and conditioner because I have thick natural hair (I'm African-American) that needs a lot of conditioning. They only charge 35.00 and it's well worth the price because they are quick (1 hour on average) and they are pretty good stylists. read more

Started my review while in house. Greeted immediately all male staff. Hair is every where in the center of the floor, but swept soon after, and bathroom is ok, there's hand soap but no paper towels. Despite the minor details. I really believe, well actually pretty sure. I just had the best shampoo of my life. I gotta find out his name...ahhh Adam is name. Services are steady moving. You get a smock head to a bowl. I requested a deep conditioner. Adam confirmed again while washing my hair and let me know there would be an additional $10 charge. He asked would that be okay. I agreed I really appreciate transparency throughout my service. Not to mention my deep condition include the steam hood, great for the skin and sinuses. Adam he is Awesome! Now I'm nervous because he tells me to wait for one of the other gentleman to have a chair open up. I am afraid of too much heat hair is little past shoulders not quite to the bra. Natural and new, I shaved it bald a little over a year ago. So virgin hair in every since of the word. Now I have Patrick as my stylist. Good job so far on my blow out full of body. With the curl real attention to kitchens and edges. Hair looks amazing. I wasn't aware of the nickel and diming though. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I called before coming in to schedule an appointment and asked for a quote. I came in with my hair not straightened, and he kept saying he couldn't cut my hair or blow dry it. He then told me it would be $100 when he said it was $35 for the wash and blow dry on the phone and $25 for the haircut on the phone. He was plain rude and clearly doesn't know how to do hair or understand hair. Another girl came in at the same time as me, but she had her hair straightened already and he told her $45 after she said her hair was natural. They asked why it wasn't $35 like advertised and he said because her hair is natural. BOTH of our hair is natural but he wanted to charge me $100 just because I didn't come with my hair straightened.
