If I could give Doctor MacDougall 100 stars I would. I have been dealing with a skin problem on my hands for over 5 years. I have gone to at least 6 doctors and NONE of them helped me solve my problem. My hands would crack, bleed and flake and suffered with this for years, it was embarrassing handing money to cashiers. I finally went to Dr. MacDougall in Manhattan Beach and after two different creams Dr. MacDougall had one more magic trick in his arsenal AND that finally did the trick, I was cured AFTER JUST TWO WEEKS!!!! It was an expensive cream that he had to get approval from my insurance company, but he was eagerly willing to do the paperwork to help me. I cannot praise him more highly; my skin irritation has not returned and it has been about 3-4 weeks. HALLULAH My husband is a patient of Dr. MacDougall too and he also has high praises for him. It takes a while to get an appointment BUT IT WAS WORTH IT. HE IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST. I don't want to mention the creams because I don't want people going there to ask for this cream, if it is not right for you, I sure worked for me. read more

Years ago my smart wife told me to make an appointment with Dr. Jamie. I had a thing on my nose I wasn't sure about and my mom has skin cancer history. Well, it was a blessing to find him because I has a basil cell cancer and he found it. Since then, I go twice a year and he takes out the "blowtorch" to keep me in good skin health. He cares, he's smart plus we laugh. And talk about other stuff that just medicine. He is a modest fantastic doctor and I'm glad to have him as my doctor. His staff is cut from the same and they are also right on it. I speak from my heart when I say if you're looking for a dermatologist, give Dr. Jamie a call and you'll be in very good hands. This doctor prescribed Accutane when I was a young teenager. I've had numerous permanent side effects from it and it was definitely an unnecessary prescription. I wasn't informed about the potential risks at all. He may have had good intent but should have been way more cautious prescribing such a serious medication to someone my age at the time. read more

Let me begin by saying I am VERY selective about anyone who provides a service to me, especially my physicians. Dr. Macdougall is hands down one of the kindest, most caring and wonderful doctors I have ever had. I moved away to Northern CA for four years and although he recommended someone up there, I found myself flying back to see him for my annual check. I am spoiled by his care and not interested in seeing any other dermatologist. I have returned from NorCal and even though I am currently living and working in Orange County, I will travel the dreaded 405 to see him! Dr. Macdougall is extremely patient and takes the time to explain procedures, options and even non-dermatological things very well. As his patients, my boys and I found that he took the time to get to know us as people, not just a person passing through his office. I took a moment to read the other reviews (I am a curious individual) and was quite shocked and feel the need to comment on a couple of things. Physicians are NOT going to remove anything from your body and not send it to a lab for a biopsy. To think otherwise is just...dumb. Sorry. Physicians want to make sure nothing is missed at the cellular level and you aren't going to DIE. Why wouldn't you want it checked to be sure? Be thankful Dr. Macdougall is thorough. With regard to the staff, Dr. Macdougall has had the very best staff for decades, with very little turnover. A couple of them have left (one of my favorite front office girls left to become a police officer), but he hires quality people. It is sometimes a challenge to book an appointment, but I'd rather have a doctor who is busy than one that no one wants to see! If you have a more urgent matter, explain it to the staff. They have always been helpful! read more

Dr. MacDougall is an excellent physician. He has a nice manner, is easy to talk to and he listens. I went to him as a random pick from my health coverage, also checked him out on Yelp, and I'm happy to say, he's now my dermatologist. read more

This doctor is deplorable. He removed a tiny bump on my neck at the hairline- he told what it was the moment it was removed. He never said anything about a pathology exam. Then the bill arrives and he charged me $120. To get a pathology exam that was unmentioned at the time of removal and completely unnecessary. I responded to the bill with the amount my insurance did not cover minus that ridiculous charge. Now the miser has taken me to collections and his office manager won't even let me speak to him on the phone. I would never recommend this quack to anyone I know and plan tell everyone that he's just a money hungry piece of garbage and if you want an ethical doctor, go elsewhere. I was a patient of Dr. MacDougall for four years. Made my yearly appointment, they called me as a reminder. I showed up and the receptionist told me "We don't take your insurance any more." I asked if they had been paid in the past, "Yes." She said, "You have to switch insurance from WC to another carrier." I told her that it would not fly with the new carrier. She got really rude and short at that point. I asked if I could speak to Jamie, answer, "No." "You mean I can't see him?" "Yes, unless you switch" with a condescending smirk. I walked out shaking my head, wondering what ever happened to taking care of the patient.....Found another Dr. that cares about my health more that who pays the bill.... read more

I went here for removal of two spots that caused a bit of irritation. Dr MacDougall did the procedure in less than 10 minutes and they came out great. However - I'm giving him 3 stars because the price here is absolutely ridiculous. $300 per removal! read more

Excellent and extremely knowledgeable Doctor. Explained everything clearly. I had a small pre-cancerous dot on my check and he removed it, actually froze it off in 30 seconds or less. No pain and my face is now smooth and flawless once again. Loved the location and easy parking. read more

Dr. MacDougall is the best dermatologist I've ever had. I've been seeing dermatologists for decades for my high risk of skin cancer. I was referred to him several years ago and could not be happier. He is super personal. You do not feel rushed. He is extremely thorough and answers any questions I may have, no matter how small or vain. He also helps me make better decisions in regards to facials and other non-medical skin treatments I get outside of his office. It is obvious he loves his job and is a people person. He is an all around great doctor and puts health, wellness, and patient comfort ahead of all else. I've been hacked up by many other doctors, so I'm happy to report he is very careful and meticulous about any decisions to remove or biopsy anything. I could not feel more comfortable in his care. My long time Dermotologist retired recently and I had to find someone new. a friend suguested Dr. Mcdougall and I am so happy to have found such a great doctor. His office is spotless, the staff is so nice and professional. Kindra, Ryan and the sweet blond girl were terrific and helped me with my prescription. The Dr. Really knows his stuff. He patiently explained everything to me so I could really understand what's going on with my skin problems. Made me feel comfortable, and confident in his exam. I have been a patient of Dr.MacDougall's for more than 25 years. He has always clearly explained every procedure and his preference for one treatment over another. He is always personable and I've always found him to be an excellent example of a great dermatologist. His own skin is probably the best advertisement for caring for one's skin gently and avoiding sunbathing. His office staff is efficient, helpful, friendly. He is a little difficult to get an appointment with- a testament to his skills as a great doctor. The receptionist will always call you (if requested) if there are cancelations that might better suit your schedule. I am happy to recommend him to anyone looking for an excellent dermotologist. read more

I haven't been a patient of Dr. Macdougall's for a while, but felt the need to leave a review. I saw Dr. Macdougall for close to 10 years and he has absolutely ruined me for other doctors! He is hands down the best dermatologist I've had the pleasure of seeing. He is incredibly patient, and very thorough in detailing your condition, his thoughts on treatment and your options. I never felt like I was getting "bum-rushed" out of his office, and never minded waiting for my appointment as I knew I'd get the same in depth attention he was giving the patient before me. He is constantly educating himself on the latest treatments and often would suggest out of the box treatments for me and advocated on my behalf when my insurance denied my medication. I can't recommend Dr. Jamie Macdougall enough. read more

I went to see Dr. MacDougall in 2012 due to a quarter-sized itchy spot on my scalp. I have lupus & I asked if it was related to that. Dr. MacDougall gave me an arrogant laugh and said no, no way. He insisted it was dermatitis & prescribed me prescription almond oil (didn't work). Fast forward a few years, the itchy patch had turned into alopecia with hair loss. My rheumatologist diagnosed it as discoid lupus, referred me to a more qualified dermatologist (Rachel Abuav) who confirmed it was lupus related. She managed to slow down the permanent hair loss I'd suffered. Dr. MacDougall would benefit from a bit more research and a lot more humility. read more

I've only been in to see Dr. MacDougall a few times but every time has been a far more pleasant visit than they had any right to be. I've been receiving a fairly uncomfortable treatment a couple times a year for several years now, but when I moved out to the L.A. area I needed to find a new doctor. Luckily, Dr. MacDougall came highly recommended. And for good reason. He's extremely kind, caring, and knowledgeable, and has gone above and beyond to take care of me. And on top of that, his staff is just as wonderful and caring. I really can't recommend this office enough. read more

First off, let me say that Dr. McDougall is a great guy, super knowledgeable, personable, nice, funny, patient. An exceptional Doctor whom I would recommend happily. To anyone, that is, that has the proper insurance or plenty of cash. Here's what went wrong. I was referred by someone with my same insurance company. I asked the woman at the desk (his wife apparently) if they took my insurance. I gave her my card and she said "Oh for sure!" I gave it to her again after the visit upon check-out and said, "How much do I owe you?" -- "Well it says here, specialist is $35." Great, fine. Here's cash, goodbye, all smiles, all good. Bill comes. huh? Call my insurance. "Oh yea they're out of network, they only take PPOs" Was instructed to ask for Clinical Supervisor (which apparently is also his wife). Call McDougall's office. "Oh no...we don't take HMOs. You have to pay the balance." Their excuse? "Insurance cards have so much written on them, sometimes we mess up and miss things." Aren't you a medical establishment that sees insurance cards all day long? That's like a bouncer at a bar letting in someone underage because "Hey man, have you seen a driver's license? They have so much stuff written on them, sometimes I mess up!" OK - sometimes you mess up. If you mess up, generally you make it right, no? Apparently no. I was told: - "Oh you're just someone who wants to get things for free in life!" - "So you think you didn't get any value out of the visit?" - "I have no time to deal with idiots like you!" (idiot? Really??) - "Yea sure, just go enjoy your free visit and your life and never come back here!" (hello, I paid my freakin co-pay! You messed up! This is your mistake and I shouldn't be responsible for your ineptitude at your job.) - "Who referred you?!" (yea like I'm gonna tell you so that the doctor can tell them they have cancer or some whack medical prank) Seriously, it was an unreasonable response. I'm shocked. Sorry lady, won't be paying the bill. read more

Went in for my annual check up and they refused to bill me under preventative care because I asked a question about a some flaking skin on my ear. Ridiculous billing practices. Called multiple times to explain the situation and they would not budge and send the bill to collections (from other reviews this seems to be a standard practice with billing disputes). They would not listen to any explanation and just demanded the bill be paid. Ended up having to work with my insurance company to have the charge reversed which was a huge pain. read more

I am updating this review today to five stars because somehow Dr. MacDougall was made aware of the issue I encountered with his front office I had a feeling he did not know about the encounter as the response I was getting just did not make any sense. I received a handwritten letter in the mail today apologizing for the events and resolving the issue I was having. That was huge I will call his office tomorrow and schedule an appointment he is one of a kind, they just don't make them like this anymore. I am thrilled to continue our Dr. patient relationship as I feel strongly he is one of the best Dr.'s I have been lucky enought to find. read more
