I saw Scott Rackett, M D. to manage small areas of what I feared were skin cancers and a little something elee that needed to go. He examined. froze, and excised. All was pleasant, professional and thorough. He gave me a tiny container of Vaseline (more than enough) for the excision site. I was called a couple of days later with reassuring words from the path report. The office is conveniently located and the parking lot ample, with ramps for mobility needs. Unlike many professional offices, the waiting room looks like a stylish, upscale yet unpretentious doctor's office, not a skincare products boutique. Dr. Rackett invited me to call for follow-up or new problems. I'd extend the same to you. read more

I had an appointment with Dr. Rackett and called the office to let them know I would be about 15 minutes late because a work meeting had run over. Reception told me that the dermatologist had set aside a specific amount of time for my appointment and that I would need to reschedule. I understood and rescheduled the appointment for a couple of days later. I attended the rescheduled appointment and paid my bill in full for the procedure at the office. At no point during my initial phone call, when I rescheduled, or when I was physically in the office for treatment was I told that I would be charged a no-show fee. This was especially confusing because I had called ahead to explain that I would be late and was instructed by the office to reschedule. Weeks later, I was charged a $50 fee for the original appointment. If there was a cancellation or late-arrival policy that applied in this situation, it should have been clearly communicated when I called or when I was in the office for my rescheduled appointment. I could have understood the charge if it had been explained at the time, but instead I received a message weeks later stating that finance charges would be applied to an unpaid no-show balance I was unaware of. Very disappointing experience. It feels like the practice is more interested in collecting $$ fees than treating patients fairly. I would recommend looking elsewhere. read more

I made an appt with MB Dermatology per my pediatrician recommendation for my daughter who had a terrible eczema outbreak and allergic reaction. I took her out of school that morning especially to take her to the doctor. When I get there, the front desk lady tells me my appointment was cancelled and does not offer to reschedule it. The office should have been considerate that as a mother it is the worst thing to see your child suffering constantly itching and then to be rejected by a doctor was the worst feeling especially with my daughter standing right there. I'm sure the doctor is great here but the front desk staff disrespected and mistreated me and my young daughter. read more

Always had a good experience with this office for years until they decided to change lab facilities without notifying clients. As you can imagine, pathology is vital in dermatology & can be very expensive. The practice changed labs without notice & now is out of network for many. The only person penalized would be the patient and without having any idea. VERY poor business practice when a very simple email or even a basic sign to inform the patient of the change & to please check with your insurance carrier. I am 71 years old and I have been to a number of physicians. I was originally referred to Dr. Rackett by my retired internist Dr. Kenneth Landis years ago. Dr. Rackett is a very conscientious physician and takes time to assess your dermatological condition. The mood and atmosphere in his office and exam rooms are relaxing and I had an easy time with each visit. Front office staff are cordial and attentive to any waiting patients. I am writing this now because I had to move quite a distance away from his office some time ago and ended up trying out other offices. The one thing that immediately caught my attention was the fact that the other ones tended to look more like I was walking into a department store cosmetics section. Now, if your looking for that type of treatment, then that's great. But for me, who used to be the typical SoCal beach goer when I was a wee lad, it was important that I have a thorough exam of any dermal irregularities. Dr. Rackett provides that type of attention to details that gives me a major breath or two of comfort. With each passing year, all those tiny little freckles and patches can flare up into an unpleasant ordeal. So, even though I now live near East Hollywood, I find it very worth my while to make the long trek to Manhattan Beach. It is always well worth it and gives me peace of mind. Avoid this snake oil salesman at all cost unless you want to waste your precious time. I made an appointment almost a month ago because that was "the soonest they had". Despite the fact that I had serious concerns about a few spots on me I figured if the guy is in Manhattan Beach he's probably decent so I'll wait. They must have sent half a dozen messages to tell me I would be automatically charged if I had to cancel my appointment within 24 hours, so they are serious about getting money that much I know. Then they called a few times to make sure all the insurance info was good to go. Again gotta make sure they get that sweet money...then with only about a days notice they have the gall to call me and tell me they have cancelled my appointment because of "Covid related blah blah". Last I checked all it really takes is a doctor and someone to answer the phones but God knows what this guys overhead is so maybe he needs someone there to bring him his coffee and straighten his tie. I get that staffing may be short but having made my appointment a month earlier I should get priority at the very next time they are taking people but instead I was told that they would have something in February. This office for sure doesn't care about patients and is about that green or they would make it work. Among the casualties of Covid is customer service. This is the real tragedy in America right now...because everyone is so terrified of getting the sniffles that peoples real heath IE mental, routine, elective whatever are getting throw to the wayside. It's absolutely disgusting and shameful. And mark my words for people reading this review, even though they are so short staffed and can't possibly take patients they will have the time to have someone remotely respond and try to spin this as to why they are a great office and they are just following the rules and we are so sorry for the inconvenience. With the current Santa Ana winds in SoCal (yes the horrific fires and there are a few other minor side effects) and with 8% humidity my skin has gotten beyond dry and awful so I went back to Dr. Rackett to see if the office would just let me get a bottle of ointment once again to help solve my awful problem. I pleaded with the person at the front desk and told me I can get an appointment, which could be a week or so, and with the weather changing I may not need any help a week from now. I am in agony NOW! Anyway, the front desk person went back to talk to the "doctor" to see if he would allow me to get the $40 bottle of ointment as I know it will solve the problem tonight as it did wonderfully before. Verdict the "doctor" said NO or DROP DEAD! Again, these guys want the $250 appointment and it is ALL ABOUT $ AND THIS "DOCTOR" FAILS THE HIPPOCRATIC OATH! LET MY SUFFER! read more

Two red flags during my appointment, nevertheless, my chemical peel was a success. I came in for a chemical peel since over the phone, I was told this office no longer performs a V.I. Peel. I was quoted the price of "$200 and up" - and the receptionist clarified that although the peels start at $200, my final cost may increase if I determine with the nurse practitioner that I want to go with a more aggressive, stronger peel. When I met the nurse, we consulted about my chemical peel, in which I really pressed for a deeper peel against the doctor's recommendation, and I was quoted the astronomical price of $450. She applied the peel, she did a great job, monitored my reaction, and asked me to rinse it off a minute later. My skin developed a huge brown scab and flaked off over the course of the next 7 days. I was advised to keep it moisturized with vaseline, and protected with SPF 50 or higher. I was not sent home with ANY aftercare products (that I did not purchase myself). All in all, the peel was successful and about half of my acne scarring lightened or disappeared. Although I like to go to the beach when I can, I take extra precautions about wearing SPF 50 to the beach along with a hat and sunglasses. This wasn't a miracle cure and I will probably desire another peel in the winter, about 5 months after my initial application. For the cost of $450, I will definitely be seeking out alternatives to this office. I asked whether they sell peel packages to get me to come back, and the receptionist said they do not. I'm not impressed with the office, there were a few red flags to my experience, but if you have $450 to blow and you hate the dark marks on your face, consider a TCA peel. Be advised you have a 7 day time period where you don't want the world to see you, so get your groceries and your movies set up ahead of time. read more

While most people come in for their face, we stuck a finger in the Doctor's face! My daughter had something going on with her finger tip that comes and goes. It happened to be fairly noticeable last time we were at Dr. Paul's Immediate urgent care (thanks to my daughter picking at it) and they said, "You should probably have a dermatologist look at it...make sure it's not contagious" Dr. Racket's staff was so helpful and actually got us in on a same-day appointment when I happened to have a day off work (last-minute). Everyone that worked there is so kind and professional! The office is clean, open and welcoming! I am a new patient of Dr. Rackett and I had many dermatologists before this. Some other ones at UCLA and some other ones in Manhattan Beach, i must say he's the best i had so far. All other derms that i saw made judgement really quickly and just prescribe me medication without doing follow up and cares. Dr. Rackett was different, he found out i was allergic to the med that i received and right away did fungal tests and bacteria tests and finally found out i had none of that and just had more sensitive skin as i age aka old age eczema. My skin was extremely aggravated when I first moved to South Bay from Chicago with both eczema and acne. I went to MBD for an initial consultation to get my skin under control. I was given a Rx for an oral and topical medication. After about a month, I wasn't seeing much improvement, so I went back and met with Dr. Rackett. It was at this point that he suggested a combination of his products vs. the original Rx. Within a week, I could already tell the difference and even got a compliment from a coworker on my skin! Yes, they provide recommendations that include their own products, which may cost slightly more than what your $7 prescription card will cover, but I'd rather pay for a product that works than save a couple dollars on a whole lot of products that don't. I went to Manhattan Beach Dermatology about 10 years ago after trying a few other dermatologists in the area. I have difficult fair skin and usually develop a weird rashes when stressed. All through college I had a rash on the lower part of my legs. None of three other doctors I had been to could tell me what it was, nor how to get rid of it. Dr. Scott Rackett diagnosed the rash right away and prescribed an effective treatment. The rash went away as soon as I begun the treatment. I was so happy that I could wear shorts again, after two years of hiding. Another time I developed a staph infection while traveling on the railway from Boston to Vermont. It was a Saturday when MBD's answering service passed my call to Dr. Rackett's cell phone. He answered my call while he was walking his dog. He had me take a picture of the wound and told me exactly how to handle the problem. I went to the ER once I got to Vermont. I have to say this office is incredible. After years of putting it off, I finally made an appointment. I saw Dr. Rackett and I was able to get an appointment within a few days. As recommended, I printed my paperwork off of their website and brought it with me already filled out. I only had to wait about 20 minutes which is actually pretty good considering how full the parking lot was and how many other patients were in the waiting room. The girls at the front desk are very sweet and made sure that I understood my insurance coverage. They also gave me a ton of information on the products they sell and gave me samples of their recommendations (which I have since gone back and purchased). My visit with Dr. Rackett was very thorough- he really is a very kind man. He and his assistant answered all of my questions and when he decided he wanted to biopsy a few things, he gave me an estimate of what it would cost. . Best dermatologist I have ever been too. Nicest staff. He ran tests no one else did and diagnosed me with something serious that 4 other doctors missed. All it took was a biopsy that no one else ever thought of and kept misdiagnosing. Dr Rackett is wonderful. Daniella is fantastic for cosmetic work too. Minimalist, not over the top, can barely see it which is how it all should be not like this freakish work you see every where here where women all look like they have had facial reconstruction in a burn unit. Went in today to get a mole removed for biopsy. My primary care physician said she could remove it... But I didn't want to risk anything so I started looking near my house for a derm that takes my insurance. It honestly took me about a week of looking at web reviews and websites until I found Manhattan Beach Dermatology. The reason why I picked them is because their front desk was very helpful with my questions (especially about out of pocket costs) and their paperwork listed on their website looked the most medically based. I had a bad experience in the past when I went to a derm who recommended injections and other cosmetic procedures... When I was 20. So I always try to find a medically based dermatologist instead of a cosmetically based one. Well I definitely found it! I saw Dr. Racket today and he removed a mole for biopsy. It was COMPLETELY pain free and very quick. Everyone was very nice and explained exactly what was happening. They made sure I was clear about what would happen next, and when to expect results from the biopsy. I definitely recommend going to Manhattan Beach Dermatology! I was pregnant when I first saw Dr.Rackett and I had broken out so horrible that I did not find myself comfortable to leave the house. I went in and Juana at the front desk is by far the NICEST ever and the whole staff is remarkable. Once he saw me, he recommended medicine that they sell at the office and to this day...my face is the best it has been. I leave the house with limited makeup and at times with no makeup and if you knew me, you'd know that is very hard for me to do but I now have the confidence with a clear face. I live in Manhattan Beach and found Manhattan Beach Dermatology through a Web search for providers who offer Levulan + IPL in Los Angeles. I have two dime-sized dark spots on my cheeks caused by sun damage. These were my major concern as they are difficult to cover with make-up and I feel self-conscious about them. Several IPL sessions, which had worked on other sun damage and freckels in the past, had not made a demonstrable difference on these two spots and a few smaller ones on my upper lip. So, I was looking to try a different treatment to see results. I called rand equested a consultation for the Levulan+IPL treatment, which is a cosmetic treatment (obviously, right?). These two sun spots are non-cancerous (or even pre-cancerous) and I told this to the receptionist. I was advised by the receptionist that if I even said the word brown spot or sun damage, that the appointment would then be "medical" and would be subject to my insurance co-pay ($60 for a specialist). That felt VERY wrong to me. I have been to several dermatologists (and med spas) over the years. None of them have ever charged for a medical consultation when I went in asking for a cosmetic service and discussed just that cosmetic issue in the consultation. The receptionist admitted to me that "yes, the lasers that are used for sun spot/damage removal are cosmetic, but a consult where brown spots or sun damage are mentioned are medical." WTF? This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. This has policy has SCAM written all over it! I saw the nurse practitioner Daniela Leslie. She told me I was not a good candidate for the Levulan + IPL treatment and insteaad recommended a VI Peel. I have read about many peels and was somewhat afraid of the downtime. In addition, I am a person of color and had read some fairly horrible accounts of people getting VI (and other) peels and ending up with burning and/or hypopigmentation. I was nervous, but she reassured me I would not experience any of these side effects. I decided to go with the VI peel. The cost was $350, $50-$150 more than any of the other dermatologist's offices or med spas (even in Manhattan Beach) I found on the Web. The day of my peel, I was even more nervous, but again, Daniela put me at ease. After the peel, the itching was almost unbearable, but this subsided with the creams they provided. The worst part was the incredible tightness and itching on my eyelds and around my eyes. My eyelids and below-brow area looked and felt puffy and tight, like they were being stretched out. I was very concerned that this stretched effect was not going to go away and the eyelid and below-brow skin would become droopy. The peeling itself was a bit of a pain, but did not hurt. I followed all the given insructions to the letter. I am one week post-VI peel and I am supremely disappointed with the results. The tightness around my eyes persists. The skin in my eyelid and below-brow area looks looser from where the skin had been stretched, giving me an aged effect. Moreover, I have seen not one bit of improvement in the dark spots of concern on my cheeks or upper lip. I am completely frustrated. I had doubts that the peel would be effective, but went ahead with it anwyway. I spent $350 on the peel plus $60 for the consultation for a total of $410 wasted! Burn!
