We were in Lake Charles looking for some lunch. I looked at my Yelp reviews and they were all Tex-Mex, so we decided to branch out a bit. I'm glad we did! Our waiter was JD, and he was very funny and very helpful. I had a glass of Chardonnay. For my meal, I had Fish & Chips with green beans, and Mike had tea and a Reuben with onion rings. The fish and chips were SO good! We were here once before, and I remembered that they add some sort of sweet salt to their fries, so I ordered mine without. Although I'd rather have mushy peas with my fish, the green beans were exceptional. Mike ate his entire Reuben and loved it. The onion rings were very tasty too. The Irish pub theme is over done and the waiters and waitresses are wearing kelts.... Too much and super cheesy. HUGE BEER MENU - 5 We ordered the Nasty Irishman burger and when the menu says it has everything... it truly has everything on it. It was delicious and it was messy. The Crab Au Gratin grilled cheese which was delicious as well. The fish and chips were not excellent as there was so much breading that the fish didn't seem to be cooked all the way through. The Shipwreck fries were ok as were the stuffed mushrooms. Finally, as excited as my wife was to enjoy the Rueben... she was disappointed as it was not as good as what her mother makes for her at home. Decided on this place based on the reviews. The drive over was lovely - the large houses on the water. Beautiful! This place is worth the visit. Lovely seating area outside. We chose to sit inside (it was breezy and, you know, the hair!). Service was really good - I believe the waitress was also the manager. Now to the food - chefs kiss! We love boudin balls and these were, for me, the best I've had. I don't like a lot of rice in mine. These were almost creamy on the inside. The flavor was on point and they were fried perfectly. They came with pepper jelly. First time for that but a great addition! We split the Lochness Monster and, I'm here to tell you, that could be a party of 4 meal. There was only two of us so we took a lot of it with us. The reason for the 4 stars was the kitchen left out the calamarie and crawfish. Let me start off by saying their happy hour is AMAZING! Would 100% recommend going just for the deal alone. Everything is half off all drinks and appetizers. I ordered a Moscow mule and Guinness beer and both were good. Also ordered fried pickles and while I could tell they were hand battered, they were very very salty and quite oily. The host was a bit off putting and it felt as they we were bothering the staff by being there. The inside is very small so I would recommend sitting outside. I had a very disappointing experience with McFarlands Pub today. I called at 10:32 AM to place an order, and they refused to take it until after 11:00 AM. This is frustrating, especially since almost every other restaurant will gladly take orders anytime after 10:30. There was no flexibility or effort to help -- just a flat refusal. Poor customer service like this makes it hard to want to support a business. If you value convenience and good service, I'd recommend going elsewhere. read more

MacFarlane's for Sunday Brunch - the menu choices were quite varied and looked and sounded delicious. Got there right before they opened for Sunday Brunch and sipped coffee and checked out a variety of offerings as they passed going to other tables as I contemplated the choices. As I was with friends I was able to sample quite a few selections. All were very tasty. The service was good even as busy as it was. Worst service ever, wanted a drink but the waitress said I had to move to another table after I sat there for five minutes without acknowledgment. I asked if I could sit at an adjacent table and she asked repeatedly if I was with that party. I did not take pictures of food. We went on a Saturday night. It was a bit chilly so we sat inside. There was an artist, singing and playing a guitar. The dining room is small, but quaint, however if you want to have a conversation, do not go when there's live music inside. The waitress tried to sit us at a table which was situated directly next to the speaker. We kindly asked to be seated at a table further away, and she chose a table near the door. I stopped in here on a Tuesday night for a late supper with a friend. We were seated right away. For my Main I ordered the Stuffed Grilled Cheese with a side of Fries and a Bread Pudding for dessert. -Stuffed Grilled Cheese: The Crab Au Gratin stuffed inside the sandwich was to die for and the cheese was the perfect melt-in-your-mouth-goodness amount, but I wasn't happy with the bread. The crust was way too hard so I pulled most of it off. Next time I would happily order the Crab Au Gratin by itself as an Appetizer dip instead. -Fries: The Fries were the Potato Wedge type and I throroughly enjoyed them. They were the perfect size and had just the right amount of crisp to them. I would definitely order them again. -Drunken Irish Bread Pudding: The Bread Pudding was delicious. I loved the whipped cream on top and it slowly melted into the warmth of the Pudding as I ate it. I would definitey order this again! I wanted fish and chips, so I did what folks in the 21st century do...I Googled. We live in a small town, so it's slim pickens. Several local restaurants came up, but I didn't want fried catfish or fried farmed fish. I wanted proper fish and chips, hopefully with mushy peas. My Google search included McFarlane's, so I looked at their online menu. Amazing choices! My BF and I made the short trip to McFarlane's today, and we will be back. The good: Pub atmosphere, welcoming staff, and our waiter (JD) was very knowledgeable. Great selection of beers and a huge menu...but that could also be a restaurant's undoing. The fish was AMAZING. Not greasy, fresh, proper F&C. The Blarney Stones starter was also very good. The bad: Mike ordered a roast beef po boy, and while good, it is being served on the wrong plate. A metal plate with a flimsy fake paper liner underneath is not the vessel. He enjoyed the po boy, but kind of felt like he may be ingesting the paper liner once he got down to the last bits. As for my meal, the chips have some sort of house blend spice on them which did not agree with my palate. JD said something about brown sugar on the fries. No thank you, just some salt please. My side was green beans, and they had that same taste. Perfectly crunchy, with bacon but tasted like there was a sweet element. The upshot: Everything on the menu appears thoughtful. Since I took half my meal home, I wiped off the sweet house blend and these chips are amazing. A couple of minutes in the air fryer, and I enjoyed the fish and the chips! Came across this place on yelp & had to check it out as we were on road trip time and up for anything! Rolled in on a Wednesday night and at first glance we weren't sure if they were open. After taking a peek inside and seeing that they were indeed open, we trickled on in in hopes of easing our hungry with something good and let me tell you, this place exceeded our expectations. Atmosphere: Not jumping on a Wednesday after Mardi Gras by any means. There may have been a total of 6 people the entire time we were there but it was still nice! Customer service: Outstanding! Our waitress was so patient with us after being on the road for so long. She basically ordered our food for us and she didn't miss a beat! Food: Idk what kind of crack gravy they put on the pub fries but it is sooooo good! Highly highly recommend! Not your everyday run of the mill menu that has different names for the same foods all over town. The appetizers we had were: Scotch Eggs - which is boiled eggs wrapped in a pan sausage and coated with their house batter and fried (really good) Blarney Stones - that are jalapeños stuffed with pork sausage wrapped in applewood smoked bacon and fried (good but spicy), Crab au gratin (fantastic) and cod fries. The Remoulade sauce is really good. I was very torn on making a decision for my main course but decided on the Stuffed Grilled Cheese that consisted of cheddar, pepper jack and Gouda stuffed with crab au gratin that was Amazing! The BEST grilled cheese you will ever put in your mouth! And for desert the Chocolate pot their take on Creme Brûlée. Rich but very good On a previous visit I ordered the Pub Fries. It is served in a bowl covered in corned beef, cheddar and mozzarella cheese, and crispy bacon baked and then smothered in brown gravy. Absolutely Devine!! This pub is a wonderful experience my wife and I eat here as often as we can. It is a great place for a nice evening out we have gone casual and dressed to the nines and feel at home either way. Easily the best fish and chips in Lake Charles. Shepherd pie is perfectly done and the temperature and flavor are on point. The artichoke dip is superb and a must at every meal. Finally, The Double Chop, friends I recommend not missing this dish. There is up to a thirty minute wait for them however, I didn't even remember the wait once I took that first bite of this delicious meal. The atmosphere was cozy and the beer selection was pretty legit. My bartender was patient with me and that's always appreciated. Apologies, I have a bad habit of only taking/posting photos of the food I enjoy because I don't enjoy giving not-so-great reviews. I did try to provide menu photos for future guests though. It took us forever to have someone acknowledge us while trying to figure out if we were to find a spot or wait to be seated. We tried to speak to multiple staff simply to ask this. Finally a waitress brushed us off as she let us know someone would come to us. The hostess finally arrived and showed us to our seat. Our waitress was very friendly and bubbly. She was patient and helpful. Food - We ordered a burger, Oysters Rockefeller, and the spinach & artichoke dip. My girlfriend ordered the burger and said it was good. The Oyster Rockefeller was pretty good and the bread served with it was amazing! The bacon seemed to overpower the taste of the sauce but it was still great. I didn't care for the artichoke dip at all. It tasted bland and just not like artichoke dip at all. Drinks - There didn't seem to be an abundant choice of draft beer for being a pub. There were only a handful. We ordered a flight of beer and Blue Moon on draft. Naturally, I enjoyed my Blue Moon. It was served cold and fresh. My girlfriend didn't care for her flight, so she downed them like shots...uhm, I'm not sure if I'll upload that video or not yet. read more

Three stars, because the Pub Fries and beer were good. We were in town for the day, and someone we ran into had suggested MacFarlane's for a beer and a burger. Pulling up, it looked like a fun place! People seating outside chatting and drinking, with outdoor heaters, as it was a chilly night. After a long day, and needing to rest and relax, this looked exactly what we needed!!! Walking in, I was surprised at how small it was, but it did have a nice atmosphere and seemed clean. "Just two?" No 'hi', no 'welcome'.. "Just two?" Yes. With a wave of a hand, "Anywhere." Okay. We sit down. Our waitress legit dropped the menus on the table, and said "Here's your menus" and walked away. She. Walked. Away. No offer of a drink. No offer of a drink menu. Stunned... we looked at each other. AND SHOULD HAVE LEFT RIGHT THEN. But... Everyone has a bad day and it was after 9pm. So. We stayed. As she is cleaning a table, my companion says to her "Can we get a beer or something?" In an obvious way, she says "Ummmm yeah. After I clean this table." Whoa... Okay then. Now I am getting testy. Because the server, Kristen, her customer service is lacking. Looking at the menu, I decide what I want. My companion is way perturbed by this point. Kristen brings water. Yippee!! Asks what we want. We ask for suggestions of a beer, she seems honestly annoyed that a customer would ask about the beer. We order. Weird thing. I order the Pub Fries. The description states that it contains 'corned beef'. She asks if I like corned beef?? Huh? If I didn't, I wouldn't order it. My companion states he'd like a simple burger and can he add mushrooms. Kristen suggests the Limerick burger. She says "We can add anything you want to it" Awesome. Because there didn't appear to be a burger with mushrooms available. Do you want cheese? Sure. Pepper jack. I kid you not. She brings a burger over. With small white mushrooms on the patty, covered by a piece of melted cheese. Not sliced. Not sautéed. I dint even think the mushrooms were warmed before they went on the patty. Ummmm what! We ask a different waiter, because our waitress was MIA, if we could please get some sautéed mushrooms. He takes the dish, comes back, maybe 2 minutes later. With the mushrooms, sliced and diced. That's it. No sautéing was ever done. Luckily, my Pub Fries were delish. My companion picks up the salt. There is no salt. I say "There has to be salt!" Every morning salt and pepper shakers should be filled. I can't imagine an entire salt shaker was used in one day. I pick it up. Oh dear. It is filthy. Filthy. Like dirt is on it. It is sticky and grimy. We request salt. The waitress, grabs the one from another table. That was the only time we saw her during our meal. This was a bust from the get-go. I did notice 3 gentleman come in and sit at the bar. One of them grabbed napkins and cleaned the bar where they were sitting. We would've been better off getting some burgers from a fast food place, and a couple of beers from a convenience store.... read more

Not Worth the Price. I went to MacFarlane's Celtic Pub in Lake Charles for lunch with some co-workers. This was my first visit, and a co-worker recommended the Fish & Chips. I ordered this for $19.99. The menu describes the Fish & Chips as follows: "Two slabs of wild caught pacific cod dipped in founders' beer batter and fried until crisp. Set atop a bed of fresh fried seasoned chips. Served with grilled lemon, homemade remoulade and your choice of a side". After about a 15-minute wait, the food arrives. The plate had 2 small pieces of fish on top of a bed of chips. They definitely weren't two slabs as described on the menu. If i would have been dining alone, I would have sent it back and ordered something else with bigger portion sizes. However, the fish was hot and fried to a golden brown and tasted very good. If you are hungry, do not order the Fish & Chips. They are not worth $19.99. read more

I've been regularly coming here on weekends in the last year and always sit outside on the patio. Variable polite-ness from the host, but never had issues with the waitstaff. You really can't beat the happy hour. Taken from their website: Happy hour is "2:00pm [to] 6:00pm Monday - Saturday All mixed drinks, 140 plus beers, Scotches and anything else behind the bar is half price with the exception of doubles. We think this is the best happy hour in Lake Charles, so come and try those drinks that you have never had and some of the unique ones that only MacFarlane's carries." I'll take that as their mission statement. Come here and try drinks that you wouldn't normally have. They have a great scotch and whiskey selection and you can really tell they are passionate about it! I've also gotten quite a selection of their fried bar food and apps. There is an outdoor deck to sit and dine as well as indoors. The staff has been friendly each time I've eaten there. Wow again what cool hidden gem of sorts. Never thought a place like this existed in the south no offense. Ya walk in and it's like Scotland or Ireland threw up all over the place cause there is so much culture and a huge festive atmosphere. Ok but the main attraction of course is there phenomenal food and drink, can't remember what I got but anything on the menu is definitely worth trying.
