What a wonderful place!! it looks like a highway truck stop from the road, a bad motel you see on the byways of America. But once you get into your beautiful over-sized room, with an amazing view of the river out your back door, you'll understand why I liked this place so much. There are Adirondack chairs and a fire pit where guests gather relax with a glass of wine. Each room has its own private deck if they prefer. Then there's Helen's, the best restaurants for miles around right on the property, and It's all just easy, relaxed and unpretentious. The newly renovated River Inn is easily the best place to stay in the Machias area. The rooms are elegantly appointed, brand new on the interior. The location is quite convenient facing the Machias River, situated on Highway 1 that runs from Canada to Key West, Florida. The best restaurant in town is Helen's, one of Maine's best hidden gem eateries, and it's literally in the parking lot of the hotel! So don't miss their fried clams, fried scallops, and onion rings! You're also close to another hidden gem in Jasper Beach, a quiet rocky cove. We weren't fond of the balcony behind our room that runs the entire length of the hotel and functions as a walkway, rather than being private for each room. But thankfully, it wasn't an issue as very few people passed by. The owners did the best with the old motel they renovated. read more

Happy with our choice to make this our home base while exploring Down East Maine. We have a nice renovated room. Very clean, no carpeting (good for cleanliness), nice view of the river. We have just returned from a trip to Maine. We started in Camden which is where we usually go and that was as always, a wonderful and fun visit. On this trip however, we took an extra couple of days to head up to Machias. Unlike Camden which is a tourist mecca for better or worse, Machias is as un-toursity as it gets. It is about 3 hours further north from Camden and less than an hour away from the Canadian border....you enter Canada from neighboring Calais Maine, and end up in St. Stephen Canada which is in New Brunswick. It is an understatement to say this area of Maine (all of Washington County) is awash in natural beauty. A few years ago, Washington County (often referred to as Downeast) decided to call itself "The Bold Coast" which is a perfect description of Machias and neighboring towns which include, Calais, Lubec, Jonesport, Cutler and Roque Bluffs among others. Everything about the scenery is big, bold and beautiful. The coastline is rocky and rugged, and the area is heavily wooded. Fishing and lobstering are the primary ways folks make money up here. We own a piece of property right next to Machias in Roque Bluffs that my husband inherited from his dad. It is a gorgeous piece of land right on the ocean. There is nothing on the land except trees and big rocks and of course the gorgeous expanse of waterfront. We have wondered over the years what to do with it..(besides pay taxes on it). We hadn't been to Machias for a few years so we thought we would check on the property and once and for all decide about next steps....build something on it or sell. There is not a lot happening in Machias, ditto for the neighboring towns, and there are only a few places to stay. We settled on the Machias River Inn and we were glad we did. On the outside, it isn't much to look at but once you enter your room you find yourself in a pretty and well-appointed space. It has all been overhauled in the last couple of years or so. The furnishings are pretty and comfortable...the mattress and pillows were fabulous and the linens and duvet were attractive. There is a slightly larger than usual size refrigerator in the room complete with a freezer which was interesting. There was a microwave and a stocked Keurig coffee machine. Everything was impeccably clean. The room also had a charming electric fireplace. We turned it on; it was adorable and is even capable of giving off heat although we didn't need it too. That said, cool/cold weather comes early to Machias and so this is a cozy addition. There is a sliding glass door leading to an outside deck which overlooks the Machias River. It appears that all the rooms have this lovely view. Outside, there are Adirondack chairs for the inn guests to use. As well, there is a propane lit fire pit and chairs around it, also for guests. We sat out there one night, enjoying a glass of wine overlooking the river watching a murmuration of a group of starlings. It was a magical night and no one else was out there. The room has very dark shades which my husband and I both appreciated. We are super light sleepers and the ability to block out any and all light always helps. The people working at the front desk (we had interactions with two of them) could not have been nicer. During this visit Tom decided that he would sell the land....Machias is just so far from home for us that it is unlikely we would make the drive very often to utilize a house we might build. As well, as beautiful as the landscape is around Machias, there is really nothing to do in town. There are a couple of restaurants both of which close by 7:30pm! There are no other shops to speak of nearby save for a hardware store (although that had some interesting items in it) and some small markets. It is a sadly depressed town from a commercial point of view. It's hardscrabble living for most year-round residents. They are rich in scenery and natural beauty but little else. We always recommend though that visitors to Maine get off the beaten tourist trail....ie Ogunquit, Kennebunkport, Camden and the more southern coastal towns. They are beautiful and great, don't get me wrong. But if you want to see the wild, wooly and virtually unspoiled Maine of old, keep driving north and consider staying at the most pleasant inn. read more

Ive stayed here on 3 separate occasions over the past year and I have to say the prices are fair, the place is clean, and the view in the back river are gorgeous with an amazing view of some wildlife including bald eagles with their nest, ospreys, and seals! This Inn is close-by walking distance to two great restaurants in town and the rooms are what you expect. Remember to change your view point when you are looking at hotels in Machias, ME. Pros 1. There isn's a lot to choose from in the area for motels so this is the one that you can grab a clean and comfortable room with a nice view 2. The staff is amazing and they are always cordial and inviting and they accomodate whatever it is that you are looking for or need. 3. Being in the same parking lot as the newly renovated Helen's restaurant, it is nice that you can walk to a really nice little place and pick up some local seafood or a burger or a steak if you's like (or a piece of their famous pie) 4. The view of the Machias river is pretty amazing (minus the low tide foam) but first thing in the morning with a fresh cup of coffee is divine. Cons 1. Everything is severely outdated with the carpets to the showers to the linens to the beds themselves and if they spent a little on those slight renovations, I feel that this little place would be top notch. 2. If you are looking for a place to go at night for a beer or a night cap while travelling there really are not many options other than Helen's because the local bars make you feel like you are clearly in a bikers bar and you will want to turn right back around I feel that if you are looking for a place to rest your head that serves the purpose and is not that much more expensive than any other similar hotels, then this place will work, if you are looking for the ritz or the hilton, then you need to keep driving read more

Rooms and bathrooms appear to be newly renovated. Clean, quiet, cool location on the river with Adirondack chairs outside the rooms to relax in and watch the river. Mattress was comfortable enough. Pet-friendly. Stayed here one night in-between camping trips in the area... the coin-op laundry was super-convenient and the mini fridge had a real freezer to perfect to refreeze my cooler packs. Decent wifi. Friendly staff. Right next to Helen's... a surprisingly upscale diner with amazingly good food. read more

Nice comfortable rooms with great views of the river and close proximity to a great local restaurant with great Blueberry Pie (Helen's) (literally within walking distance) as well as being within a short drive of the rest of the town. Having stayed at the Bluebird Motel previously which was honestly relatively nice and had fantastic staff, this is a better option if you want a little bit of a nicer room/it's not a motel which seems to usually be a plus. read more

Remodeled rooms super clean on the banks of the river. Chairs outside to sit and watch the world go by with community gas fire pit and a gas grill if you cared to cook out. The price of a nightly stay was very fair so we stayed 4 nights and used as a base camp. Bed pillows AC water pressure lighting you name it it was spot on. read more

We stayed here on our way back from Nova Scotia. Just for one night- last Friday. It definitely has a motel-feel. We checked in and got an actual key (rare and kinda fun nowadays) and settled in to our room at the end of the building on the ground level. the front door was facing west. I know this because the sun was shining bright on the door and they'd covered the narrow vertical window next to the door with some red contact paper. It gave our room a strange eerie red glow. Dislike. I'm not sure when the room was last used, but we turned on the AC right away, but felt like it never quite cooled the room down enough. The room was a bit stuffy. We left the back door open (sliding door with screen) to get some air in. The bathroom was...meh. Odd pink sink/counter with a maroon red shower curtain and towels that have seen better days. I don't think they clean the toilet too well, because it kinda smelled like urine in there. The saving grace to this place is the view out the back door. It's beautiful. Water and Maine-like landscape across the water. You could sit out there and forget about the bathroom. But you're not in control of the outdoor lights, so the bugs come quickly at dusk. The staff we interacted with were really friendly and one great thing- when we checked in, we'd had reservations for two nights. This was the end of a 10 day road trip and we decided we just wanted to drive home Saturday. We cancelled Saturday night when we checked in and there was no cancellation fee. Other than those last two points, I don't think I'll be recommending this place to people. After spending a fair amount of money on nice hotels for the rest of our trip, we were looking to save some money here. I guess we got what we paid for! read more

Quaint with friendly service. Amazing view outside of our room! Haven't seen the eagle yet but we are keeping our eyes out.

Our room was gross. The sink had toothpaste splatter on the faucet and handles and toothpaste in the sink. There was hair in the shower, a huge cobweb above the sliding glass door and dust on all of the baseboards and door. We cleaned the bathroom ourselves and stayed because it was late and we didn't have anywhere else to go with trail access, but definitely would not recommend or stay again. The view was great but our room (#10) had picnic tables, a grill, trash can and ashtray right outside of it so we always had people right in front of our room which made it hard to enjoy the view and felt like we had no privacy unless the curtain was closed. read more

This was a lovely little find. My family and I stayed in a suite and it was large and open and very comfortable. The room offered a back door and small deck to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful Machias River. It was cost efficient but definitely outdated. There's a certain amount of charm, but the beds were old and in need of replacing and you could feel the age of the motel. With a little investment this would be a real gem! read more

I have to rate the Machias Motor Inn on a curve. If this place were in a slightly more urban location nobody would stay there. But the MMI is not in a more urban area and it was not too bad. Checking in, the clerk was very nice and gave me a real key. Cute! The room is just a room. Seems clean and smells clean. The shower, the benchmark for any low priced hotel room was very clean, no mold, no what the hell is that could be found. If you find yourself in Machias, Maine and need a hotel room I can recommend the Machias Motor Inn. Just don't go to Helen's for dinner. read more

Well if you stay go to a regular room overlooking the River. Some really nice views out there, the room was comfortable enough. Not fancy. A red plastic panel in the door was really weird, what's up with that!!! One thing bothered me when the room got cleaned the maid left the back sliding door open and the screen was not locked so anyone could have come in and taken stuff. SILLY!!! Do not stay in the room by the office with a kitchen and one bedroom with king size bed. It's dingy and dank all over. read more

We were up in Machias for a friend's wedding and stayed at Machias River Inn for two nights. We were pleasantly surprised that it was charming, scenic and pretty-well maintained. The room was clean and had everything we needed, including a Keurig for morning coffee. We shared a balcony with the rooms next to us but the views were worth it. We woke up, walked right out the back door and were staring at a beautiful lake. The back of the Inn (lakeside) has a table with a fire pit in the middle which was perfect for the chilly nights. Rooms are clean and well kept. Wifi is weak and some of the basic accommodations are missing such as an iron and ironing board and no continental breakfast. For the price I think at least the traditional basic accommodations should be included. read more
