Wanted to come here for a while! This wonderful bakery is inside the Bok Building. I got few items to try, plus a loaf of their sourdough bread. The service is nice, and the space is light filled, not too large, but enough seatings. Even if there are no seats inside the bakery you can most likely find seatings in the hallway area. My family and I enjoyed all their pastries, and I really like the fact that these aren't super sweet. Some of their pastries are so pretty also. Cannot wait to go back and try other items!
Since we both had a weekday off we decided to come here on a Wednesday morning. Street parking which we were aware of. We got lucky finding a spot right in the corner! We walked around almost the entire building before finding the correct entrance but now we know where it is! I'll admit I was very overwhelmed when we walked in because we were in line and had no idea what we wanted. So I quickly ordered two items (almond croissant and an apple item, maybe a caramel apple bun) and my boyfriend picked a croissant and a small basque cheesecake. They don't serve coffee so we decided to get our items to go. I was told later by a friend that there is a small coffee shop right next door but they were closed for the holidays. I definitely want to go back when we can get coffee then go in and get something to eat so we can sit and relax there. The almond croissant was amazing (I haven't had my other item yet but I have a feeling it's going to be wonderful!)!
The pastries here are excellent. The croissants are crunchy and buttery. I had the chocolate cake. It's not a regular cake. They make it exquisite by layering it with dense chocolate mousse. Decadent chocolate but not too heavy. Too pretty to eat. Highly recommended
My friend and I went to Machine Shop this past weekend. I ordered savory pastries (jammy egg + shatta, caramelized onion danish, and fall curried squash danish (seasonal flavor, I believe). Even though I usually don't like runny or jammy eggs (I tend to like my eggs fully cooked), the flaky pastry, cheese, and jammy egg complemented each other well. I thought the fall curried squash danish was okay. It wasn't amazing and it wasn't bad, but I would not order it again (due to the price point and overall taste). I saved the best for last though. When I tried the caramelized onion, I loved how they kept the onion's original shape and rings in the caramelized onion tart. Because it was caramelized, bits of the tart got stuck in the molars of my teeth but it was a small price to pay. My friend, on the other hand, ordered the lemon tart (with the torched meringue) and the double chocolate pain au chocolat. Luckily, my friend let me a try a bite of their sweet desserts. I liked how the lemon tart had three different textures (lemon filling, crust, and meringue). When I tried a little of the double chocolate pain au chocolat, I could tell that the chocolate inside the pastry was high quality. Overall, I preferred the savory pastries over the sweet ones. The staff was quite friendly and at first, the carmelized onion tarts were not displayed so I thought they ran out, but one of the workers heard my slight surprise and my complaint and they told me that the carmelized onion tarts would be coming out shortly. The only reason I rated Machine Shop 4/5 stars, rather than 5/5 stars was because I feel like the desserts are quite overpriced compared to the small sizes of the pastries and, in general, I'm not a big fan of their sweet desserts (which is a majority of their menu). I find the sweets too rich, for my taste.
Amazing. Just, amazing. Can't wait to return! Everything looked amazing but I only had appetite for one treat so of course I tried the one with an egg. Looking forward to going back and trying new things and their coffee!
Went in on a busy Sunday morning to great service and an assortment of goodness. I opted to get 6 pastries/baked goods and enjoyed them all. The jammy egg and caramelized onion tart were my favorites and I would definitely go back just for those. I wanted to try the fig + walnut tart, but that seems to be a big seller because I only saw the large one left. Next time for sure! The service was great and I did like that they underpromised and over delivered on the timeline for when the caramelized onion tart would be cooled and it was brought right out to me.
Really really good pastries! Long line so you might want to get there early but overall it is delicious and lots of pastry options! I believe they do run out but they seem to continuously bake and bring out more stuff.
First off I was very confused trying to figure out where the entrance was to this building. Luckily I looked up some reviews and figure it out. I arrived a few mins after they opened the bakery and there was already a line! The line does move fairly quickly and the employees were loading the latest baked goods. This place smelled AMAZING. I wanted to try everything ofcourse but this time only tried 4 items. For cold items I got the lemon tart (AMAZING...the tart and the sweet together made my taste buds dance!), the chocolate cake (for rich and dark chocolate notes very very good). I also got a small coffee cake (my husband and daughter finished this one up immediately once I came home with it haha) and the zucchini tart that just came out of the oven. The zucchini tart was beautiful, savory and also super delicious. Im already plotting a trip back when Im in the area haha. 5/5 stars
Not sure how often they change the menu but everything was different since the last time I was here. Came on a weekend midday this time and there was a decent line, but it was also snowing outside. Pastries delicious as always
This bakery is among the city's finest. Located on the first floor of the Bok Building in South Philly, it provides freshly-baked pastries, desserts, and foods during the morning and afternoon period. Their menu of baked goods changes every month, and often provides specials on weekends. I loved my cara cara croissant, which was super flaky and meshed great with the citrus hints and creme inside. Unfortunately I forgot the name of the other item, but its runny egg also made for a delicious bite. Because I typically take SEPTA and walk to the building, do note that parking will be limited since it's located in a predominantly residential neighborhood. The lines will get busy on weekends and near closing, but the shop is definitely worth the wait! There is shared seating with an adjacent coffee shop on the same floor, and you can also browse at local business around the building when their hours overlap.
Everything was delish!!!!! Came around 11:30AM on a Sunday and unfortunately three things we wanted to order were already sold out Including the jammy egg which made me so sad bc I really wanted to try. Kouign amann was my fave--so flaky delicious!!!
An absolutely incredible bakery in Philadelphia! It's in the Bok building. They seem to change their menu every month and have a variety of fresh baked goods including specials on the weekend. As a vegetarian, I love savory pastries and machine shop delivers! The mushroom one and the spinach and cheese one were both incredible! We also got the orange cardamom bun- HIGHLY recommend one of the best I had. The twice baked almond croissant wasn't my favorite but the almond filling was good- was just wanting more! The service was kind and they helped us choose during our first time there. The seating is nice inside with high ceilings and plenty of tables! You can get a coffee from the nearby shop and enjoy it with your pastries.
Machine Shop serves some of the best pastries in all of Philadelphia. They are nestled in a repurposed school building. The staff is always incredibly nice. In addition to pastries, they make some of the best breads the city has to offer. Every single pastry and bread is exceptional, you will not be disappointed. As someone who comes here often, I can attest to this and won't break down what I've tried because it is all fantastic! I love how so much natural light comes in from the glass garage revolving door. Is this the best pastry destination in Philly? I am not sure. It's been several years since we visited Philly and we haven't checked out other places. However, I must agree that all the hype around Machine Shop is 100% justified. When I told the staff that it was my first time there and asked for her recommendations, she just said that everything was good. We decided on the orange cardamom morning bun, twice baked chocolate hazelnut croissant, and hibiscus lime tart. Just liked the staff said, everything was good, really good. My favorite was easily the flaky yet not too greasy croissant. I have never had a twice baked croissant before; now I wonder if I will ever have another one that's so delicious and high quality. Nope, no Nutella found inside. The morning bun and tart were also impressive. I am already thinking about what to order there next time. read more

This is located inside a cute food and shopping center that was converted from a school. The location is such a unique concept as you can still see the old structure and interior of a school, but it's now bustling with visitors and shops. This bakery at first seems impressive and exciting with its unique selection of pastries and cakes. We got a couple items to share 1. Clementine tart 2. Chocolate croissant - overly crispy 3. Chocolate mousse 4. Cannelle - looked and tasted burnt We were disappointed with all the items we got. Especially the croissant was flavorless and over baked. The cannelle also looked and tasted burnt. The fruit tart and cake was okay, nothing special. Their selection also varies so some of the items you see on yelp photo might not be there anymore. read more
Outstanding bakery! We are visitors from Atlanta-- makes us miss our own favorite hometown bakery that closed down. And if you don't believe me, believe the line out the door 30 minutes after they open! It is so worth it, but plan accordingly. Got the olive and zaatar bread, black garlic and honey focaccia, mushroom tart, onion tart, orange cardamom morning bun, peach kougn amann, and twice baked almond croissant. We also got a chai tea latte at the coffee shop, which is a separate line. Not sure if they were together, but it seemed like it. Anyways, everything was amazing. Flavorful, soft, unique, crafted. And the vibes were immaculate as well. I was happy to stand in line and observe the historic building that we were in and all of the plants around. read more
I recently came to visit here since I really like the coffee shop next door and the Bok building in general, but I just wasn't overly impressed with my experience here. I had heard this place was written up recently and was excited to re-try it, since I came when it first opened. I waited in line for about 25 minutes and when I got to the front, realized that the entire menu is already prepped, I am so confused as to why the line took SO long. The efficiency here did not seem to be a priority, but I think they would also benefit from displaying the menu in advance, to help give patrons time to choose their order. We tried the everything croissant with goat cheese, a baguette, the egg pastry and a coffee cake. I enjoyed the goat cheese croissant, but everything else were not things I would try again. The baguette was a bit over cooked as well, so maybe it was just an off day, but I don't feel a rush to return. read more

France or South Philadelphia? Either way, J'aime Machine Shop! On the first floor of the Bok Building, the space is airy, industrial and cozy all in one. Although Machine Shop doesn't sell coffee, their neighbors Two Persons does. The shared space offers the opportunity to enjoy both your coffee and pastries at the same time. It's hard to pinpoint the star of the show, because everything is good! Honorable mentions during my visit were the everything croissant with goat cheese and the twice baked almond croissant. At Machine Shop, you'll find lots of different pastries to try. The staff is super friendly and told us stories about where one pastry came from. The location is really cool because it used to be a school, and now it's full of stores. They even have a rooftop bar where you can see the city! My friends and I had an extreme amount of fun eating our pastries and enjoying the rooftop. I'll definitely be back to this place again. read more
Food: By far, the best pastries in the city! There are very few pastry shops that get me to try something new every single time and Machine Shop is one of those select few. You can't really go wrong with anything here, but my absolute favorite is the morning bun, which is so light while being crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. And don't miss out on the squash blossom, which tastes like fall perfection. Service: Always quick despite there being a line. Staff is happy to make suggestions or answer questions and are friendly. Ambiance: Nice, sunny, lively indoor area for relax and eat your pasties or do some work. It can get a bit loud because it's located at the bottom of Bok Bar and there are other coffee shops and restaurants in the same space. But that's also the fun of it! Would I go back? In case the number of photos of pastries I have in this review haven't made it real, I have been back and would love to back every day if I could. read more
Love love loveee all the pastries here! Tried the shakshuka croissant (my personal fav), kale and mozz, goat cheese everything, and chocolate croissant all of which were extremely delicious. Love the creative flavors that you can't find anywhere else. The crispy flakes are to die for. Very cute place! James Beard Award Nominee, so I had very high standards for the food. We got the chocolate cake, the hibiscus citrus tart, and chocolate praline bar. Overall, the desserts were good but nothing that blew me away. I'm interested next time in trying more of their breakfast pastries. The actual cafe was so cute and very welcoming, located inside of Bok Building which adds a nice element of adventure! read more

Loved my first trip to Machine Shop! Down on the first floor of the Bok Building, and the interior is so cool. I just picked up treats to go this time, but would definitely come back and hang out inside or meet a friend here. The double chocolate croissant was amazing-I've never had anything else like it! The doubled baked almond croissant was delicious too. This is not just your ordinary bake shop! The staff behind the counter was very friendly and helped me make my choices. Next time I'll have to go a little earlier in the morning before they sell out of done goods! read more
Perhaps overhype leads to my lower review - 3.5 I'd say. Very popular spot and super busy- loved the vibes inside- line moves fast . The kouign amign was really good! Coffee cake and croissant were just not that great IMO. read more

We came across this shop on tik tok and immediately within 5 minutes of watching we were heading over to try it out. When we got there it was a little confusing to find the entrance, but we followed the direction that many people were carrying a bag with the name on it. When we walked in we were not expecting how cute the inside was! There were a bunch of different shops and restaurants that you could go to. We walked over to the machine shop where there was a line and a lot of people sitting around. They were running low on items as we went later on a Sunday, but we got a croissant, an almond croissant and a beget. We were shocked at the reasonable prices! Once we got back to the car we couldn't wait to indulge right into the croissants. Both were so light and airy, very delicious. The beget we ended up using for sandwiches for the week. A must eat in South Philly! Machine Shop is a delightful fusion of exceptional pastries and a welcoming atmosphere that keeps patrons coming back for more. The cafe is in the Bok Auditorium and has a modern yet cozy interior, with comfortable seating and a clean, inviting ambiance that makes it the perfect spot for a relaxing morning or afternoon treat. There is limited seating but people are in and out so you can eventually get a spot if you are patient. I went over on a weekend morning and the lines can be long but it's worth the wait! The star of the show at Machine Shop Pastry Cafe is undoubtedly the pastries. Each item is a masterpiece, crafted with meticulous attention to detail. The savory egg pastry was my favorite! Within blocks from each other, South Philly is full of excellent bakeries from Korshak's bagels to Essen's babka. Machine Shop inside the BOK Building can stand their ground. Here's my experience visiting on a Friday morning around 10 a.m. 1) Pastries: They have a large pastry selection displayed beautifully behind glass- cookies, bread, croissant. I ended up taking home a double chocolate croissant and a spicy mozzarella and kale croissant. Both had complex flavors very much welcomed. 2) Service: Each person was attentive, friendly and will guide you through their favorites if asked. 3) Space: It's in the BOK Building in a design-forward, yet inviting space. The garage doors open letting the air and natural light in. After you enjoy your pastry, head to Two Persons Coffee next door for a latte. read more

So glad I finally made my way to Machine Shop for some breakfast pastries! My friend and I went on a Friday morning and decided to split one savory and one sweet pastry. For savory, we got a pastry that had a jammy egg and hot pepper stew in it. It reminded us both of shakshuka and was really delicious! We also got an orange cardamom morning bun which was so fluffy. Lines are to the door and it's barely passed 9am! Prices have increased by a dollar for a bunch of my favorites. I was so excited to find specialty croissants that weren't crazy expensive like bloomsday cafe but alas for my favorite - chocolate chocolate and blood orange croissant are $6. Which they didn't have this weekend Fancy pastries for $5, plain and pain Au chocolate for $4 as well as baguettes are fantastic here and are now $4 up from $3. Other breads too. And the egg jammy is delicious too! Hopefully prices don't go up anymore but this is my new favorite jawn in the city !!! Shhhhhh read more

tl;dr you can't go wrong with anything at this excellent French-style bakery, but the savory pastries are a true delight Emily Riddell originally operated Machine Shop Boulangerie out of the fourth floor of the Bok Building in South Philadelphia, wholesaling pastries for artisanal coffee shops throughout the city. After a pandemic-induced stint as a pop-up, Riddell opened again in the Bok, this time as a standalone bakery on the first floor. Less than a year after dedicating her brick-and-mortar store, Riddell was recognized by Food & Wine as a best new chef in 2022, and Machine Shop was dubbed one of Eater's best new restaurants. The Bok itself is a converted technical school in South Philly, home to a smattering of boutiques, restaurants, and office space. Machine Shop is in an adaptive-reuse space -- the chipped paint, original radiators and sinks, and industrial doors are complemented by clean, chic finishes. Industrial plastic school chairs are pressed up to communal tables. Light floods through the huge, ceiling-high windows onto the polished concrete floors. Spanish-language music blends with the coffeehouse din. My partner and I arrived at Machine Shop in the late morning on a drizzly weekend, and the line stretches all the way to the Bok's southern entrance. The Machine Shop team does not brew coffee, so the queue moved at a moderately quick pace. Once we arrived at the counter, the staff member couldn't be any less helpful (they wouldn't even share their favorite pastries on the menu). While most items were in stock at that time, I noticed on our way out that Machine Shop was down to its last few pastries. Our pastries were served on Machine Shop's custom, blueprint-style parchment paper, atop a plastic cafeteria tray. We opted for the Everything Croissant, the Twice Baked Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant, and the personal-sized Lemon Tart. Of the three, our favorite was the everything croissant, which boasted a crispy, flaky exterior and a soft, chewy interior. It was sprinkled with a healthy powder of everything seasoning and generously piped with mildly tart goat cheese -- the rich combination instantly reminded us of an everything bagel. My partner and I agreed that we would order this again in a heartbeat. Our other croissant would be described more accurately as a chocolate croissant with a hazelnut spread incorporated throughout. It was denser and chewier, as though it deflated onto itself, and the bitter dark chocolate notes grew on me with each subsequent bite. Lastly, the lemon tart was among the best I've enjoyed in recent memory, between the bright, tangy custard and the creamy, lightly toasted meringue. Each pastry ran $6, and, even after splitting 3, my partner and I were still peckish. While my appetite would outpace my wallet at Machine Shop, all it took was one bite to make me a believer -- the pastries are well worth the wait and the price. read more

Me and my partner consider ourselves croissant/pastry snobs, so when we moved to Philly we couldn't wait to try Machine Shop. I got the shakshuka pastry and a croissant and they were both exceptional. The shakshuka pastry in particular was knock your socks off level with it's perfectly cooked jammy egg and deliciously balanced spices. This is quite possibly the best pastry shop in the US. The shop itself is very open concept with lots of seating and natural light. An inviting and unpretentious space. Service was excellent as well. read more
This is such a lovely hidden gem in South Philly. The entrance was a little hard to find- you need to go through the entrance on Dudley street. I tried the everything croissant w goat cheese, kouign amman, and morning bun. The croissant was my favorite by far. The other two were good, but I've definitely had better so I probably wouldn't get them again. There were so many other delicious options, though- I'm looking forward to working my way through the whole menu. The vibes were cozy but modern/industrial at the same time. It's open and spacious. I think the pastries here are okay. It's definitely not worth the hype. I had the almond croissant and the traditional one. They were hard, dry and burned. It's kinda over baked. Maybe its just me and it's very pricey $5 for a regular croissant. However, I like the atmosphere in there, it's a great place to chill and do your work. read more

This has easily become my favorite pastry shop in Philly. Really good choices between sweet and savory pastries imo and interesting flavor combos. I think the prices are fair considering quality and what it is, the counter people are always nice too. My top items are the jammy egg and peach danish, though my eggs always seem to be slightly over jammy. I find that their flavor combos are well balanced and nothing has been too sweet for me. Love the flaky-ness of their pastries but was surprised that the croissants don't really have much butter flavor. I'd rather pass on the plain croissant and get one of their other options instead. Personally, the choc hazelnut croissant was too heavy for me, but if you're a chocolate lover you'll probably like it. I've been here a couple times and can say that their quality doesn't fluctuate much. The spot itself is really casual but I prefer to take my stuff to go and heat them up a little for peak happiness, will def be back for more read more

The jammy eggs are crispy and savory pastries with a wonderful gooey filling. The eggs are soft and slightly runny really tying in that creamy bite. The pastry flakes apart with each bite, it's very light. I had the mushroom and Gouda one, the mushrooms provided a great savory and meaty bite, the Gouda added a great salty and slightly creamy flavor. A great combination in a delicious treat. I had the strawberry tart. The biscuit underneath helped counter balance the sweet and sour flavor of the strawberries, which were very fresh. The tart itself was not dry and crumbly, it was firm but soft enough to cut apart with plastic cutlery. A little whip cream goes a long way and the sweetness helped tie the dish together. The bakery itself is a cute little shop with a garage door opening inside a former school. It offered pleasant vibes with fresh air circulating into the seating area. It's surrounded by the townhomes of south Philly. Parking is tight but manageable. This is a nice spot to have a nice treat! read more

I've been wanting to visit Machine Shop for a while, and after following their IG, I was even more enticed. We visited on a Saturday morning over the summer - a quick bike ride over and with plenty of parking available. We struggled for a bit to find the best entrance to get to Machine Shop, but after finding a few signs, we were on our way in. For those who have not been to Bok Building, it is such a fun experience! It's an old high school with a lot of the vibe maintained. For being a weekend day, we were pleasantly surprised to see that the line wasn't incredibly long. I snatched us some coffees from another stand while my husband waited in line. The pastries were so beautifully displayed in the cases, and we could see the hustle and bustle going on behind the scenes, which was a nice touch. It was so difficult to narrow down our choices - there were so many! I wound up going for a the twice baked almond croissant and my husband went for the 2 more savory pastries featuring jammy egg, greens, tomatoes, and feta. My croissant was perfectly flaky and the almond interior was a perfect pairing making it special but not overly sweet. My husband loved his pastries, speaking highly of their flakiness and the quality of the jammy egg and accouterments. We snagged a loaf of bread to bring home too, which was also delicious. We enjoyed our pastries and coffee at a table right in the Machine Shop storefront, easily able to find seating and still enjoying the fun ambience. I can imagine it can get pretty crowded but if you stake it out long enough, you can definitely find a spot to sit. I would highly recommend Machine Shop for anyone looking for a delicious pastry or delightful bread in a fun and unique location. We will definitely be back! read more
I am obsessed with this store. Have walked 4 miles to get it for 2 weeks so you know it's good. I pride myself on croissant knowledge and went with a good friend of mine. Theirs are flaky with layers of pastry coming off with every bite. Also their coffee cake is crumbly, buttery and heavenly with every bite. read more
INSANE croissants. Run- don't walk- because within a few hours of opening, they will start to run out of pastries. We came on a Sunday morning around 10:15 am and ordered a mushroom, gouda jammy egg danish and a everything croissant with goat cheese. Ohmygod- the mushroom, gouda and jammy egg might be one of the most heavenly bites I've had in 2023. Granted it's still January and yes- the jammy egg was a smidge overcooked BUT the mixture of mushroom and gouda was so savory and so creamy that I definitely didn't mind it. There was also little cheesy bits on the pastry- essentially the perfect bite. The everything croissant with goat cheese was just okay. It was exactly as you'd expect. A croissant with everything seasoning and stuffed with goat cheese. But part of the croissant was burnt which was less ideal. It also didn't have as much of the buttery layers as I'd hope. Would come back for another savory pastry though and as we left around 11, we noticed the egg danishes were all gone so come early to snag one! read more

I'm so happy and excited to know that Machine Shop now has its own store front, and I can't wait for more people to enjoy the amazing pastries they have to offer! I've been following Machine Shop since it was a pop-up, and I've always been amazed and surprised by their lovely collection. Their Kougin Amann with quince was delightful! The quince tastes like a sweet pear compote and pairs well with the buttery and flaky pastry. Almond Twice Baked Croissant- the buttery and flaky pastry has a lovely caramelized top that adds a layer of depth to the sweet almond inside. Lemon Tart- I'm a huge fan of lemon tarts and this has become one of my all time favorites!! The flavor was so bright, tart and perfectly sweet, and the crust perfectly complemented it. read more

Are they dog friendly?
Are they open Thursdays and Fridays? The website says they're open Thursday through Sunday, but online ordering only works for Sat/Sun, so I'm thinking maybe Thu/Fri are walk-in only?
They are indeed open on Thursdays and Fridays but it's just for walk in sales as far as I know.
