Went with a group of friends to study and eat some birthday pastries. It was a bit difficult at first to find seating because this place is busy! Definitely recommend coming early to get the best pastry selection since they sell out fast. My favorite out of the various ones we got was definitely the goat cheese everything croissant. All their croissants are beautifully laminated and flaky so don't be afraid of the crumby mess that accompanies a delicious experience. Super cool location, the place was pretty hard to find (entrance is Dudley not S9th). It was really pretty and light inside but my goodness the pastries are expensive (as you'd expect for a boutique pastry shop). I was really disappointed with my orange cardamon breakfast roll (or whatever it's called). It neither tasted like orange nor cardamon -- it mostly just tasted like dough rolled in sugar, which is *not* what I was going for. I should've chosen the coffee cake instead. Excellent bake/pastry shop in the bok building We tried a variety of pastries, including the double chocolate pain au chocolat (wish this was more common, with chocolate dough!), double baked chocolate hazelnut croissant, and ratatouille danish. Their dough was crisp and flaky. Sweet pastries were not too sweet, with the dark chocolate notes pronounced. Machine Shop Boulangerie is open Friday and Saturday from 9-12. On Fridays you can order to pick up and Saturdays are for walk-in I tried the ham and gruyere croissant and kouign-amann. They were both super flakey! The croissant had a good amount of ham and gruyere and the kouign-amann was subtley sweet. I have my eyes on other pastries--can't wait to order from here again :) read more

I adore everything I've gotten from Machine Shop! But the jammy egg tart is definitely my fave. I love how their menu always changes with the seasons. The only thing I don't like is that they don't have their own wifi and just rely on Two Persons' wifi, which means you can't access wifi in most of Machine Shop's seating. Yup this place is worth the hype. Came in for the first time today and now it's one of my favorite bakeries in the city, next to KFar and Creme Brûlée. Everything we ordered was incredible, but the jammy egg danish is probably the best thing they make. It was still warm and a skosh spicy. We sat at the bar and polished off everything, crumbs and all. The people in front of us ordered the focaccia which looked delicious. Will definitely have to come back. read more

The bottom line is you gotta show up on the open or within the first 2 hours (esp on weekends) AND I do think certain items stand out more than others (having tried almost everything there). Food worthy of 5 stars but overall have to give it 4. The baguette and lemon tart were the best baguette and lemon tart I've ever had, but I have to knock them down a star for 3 reasons: 1) the prices are very high. Justified for the quality of food, but damn they're high. 2) On top of the high prices, they charged me an extra $4, which I didn't realize until I looked at the prices online after I went (there are no prices posted in the actual shop). 3) They are largely sold out of most things by midday. Now, I realize they're doing pastries that have to be made fresh and take a long time to prepare, but you figure they know the demand for their stuff is going to be high, so why not make enough so that people have a wider selection to choose from in the later hours? read more

I was so excited to try the fare at this bakery after the owner was named to Food and Wine's best chefs list for 2022. Unfortunately, the hype fell well short of expectations despite arriving early on a Saturday morning shortly after they opened to find only a few over-baked (maybe stale?) loaves of bread, a handful of dinner style desserts, and no pastries at all. I was hoping the bread tasted better than it looked, so purchased two seeded loaves that sadly lived up to their looks and will now be used for bread crumbs and the like. So disappointing. read more

Do you want the flakiest croissants, sweet crisp yet balanced kouign amann, a great country batard to make some toast, and a fresh lemon tart? You've found the right place. My brother and I were amazed upon our first bite upon the croissant. So flaky, so many layers, it's not the usual croissant you can get in many of the bakeries in the US. The only minor complaint is that it's almost TOO flaky, that I've lost some of the body of a croissant, but this croissant is really a must try here. The kouign amann is made of croissant dough, equity flaky, but denser with the sugar and strawberry jam that isn't too sweet, making it a perfect pastry for anytime of the day. The lemon tart was amazing- as someone who usually doesn't go for fruity tarts like such, I couldn't help but to grab it when I saw how perfect it looked. The butteriness of the tart is countered by the very light and fresh lemon taste. And lastly, the country batard what a good crust, great taste, fluffy moist interior - everything you would want in such a bread. The baguette to me tasted like the country batard in baguette form, so I would ultimately choose the batard instead when coming back. read more

On a weekday morning - Beautiful pastries but too dark, should have been removed from the oven sooner, when they were golden brown. Explanations of each pastry too obscurely placed with print 1/16th of an inch high. Menu difficult to read if you're over 40 as text is minuscule. Unfriendly servers at the counter! Just a "good morning" would have been nice! Wow! The customers were brooding, not a smile or friendly vibe to be had, all glumly glued to their phones. I've been wanting to try this place since moving to Philly last summer. Unfortunately, it was not open when I tried summer 2021 so I was happy to finally get the opportunity to go. I treated myself and got six different pastries. Overall, I would say the pastries were good, but fell a little short in terms of what I was expecting. I got the kouign amann (both the original and strawberry). I was not the biggest fan of this pastry. Kouign amanns are actually my favorite French pastry and I felt like they did a good job compared to other locations in Philly. However, the two pastries were burnt and overly dense. It was also very small for the price. The strawberry pastry also did not have much of a strawberry taste. The apricot danish was pretty good and was one of my favorites but thought it could benefit from a little more sweetness. The spicy greens and mozzarella croissant was tasty although the smokiness of the mozzarella was a little bit overpowering for me. The cardamom orange pastry missed the mark for me but my partner enjoyed the taste. Lastly, the rhubarb/vanilla spiral was not my favorite in terms of flavor but had a nice lightness/flakiness that is often hard to achieve. And that's it. I probably won't go out of my way to return but would def stop by if I was in the area and the timing was right. read more

UNSANITARY AND RACIST CASHIERS. We asked for four baked good and the girl picked out everything with her bare hands, which was extremely unsanitary. She also knocked over a stack of danish when she was reaching for something and picked it back up with her hands. We were confused but didn't say anything until we saw her putting on gloves for the next customer. At this point we realized she was being racist, making fun of customers thinking they don't know better, and treating them differently. We went up to the other cashier who's a tall guy in glasses and said we didn't want this because she used her bare hands, he had horrible attitude, didn't even try to apologize for the unprofessionalism, tried to swipe it under the carpet and asked if we wanted a refund. I asked him to exchange for new ones, when the girl came over and heard what happen also didn't bother to explain what she was doing. They did not offer any sort of compensations while completely understanding that they did the wrong thing, Had very high expectations but the shop should make better judgement when hiring people. My friend and I came to try this place out for the first time today. Based on previous reviews I have high expectations. I got a few croissants and the first girl packed it all in one single paper bag but I didn't noticed until I'm already at the check out counter. So when I got to the check out I asked this other girl if I can have another bag to separate them. She got the bag and then proceeded to dig her hand WITHOUT GLOVE and grabbed the croissant (there was no bakery tissue in the first bag either). She could have just give me the bag and I can do it myself. That was so unsanitary because her hands were all over the check out kiosk, handling cash, and etc... Yet she doesn't have the common sense to understand not to touch someone else foods with those dirty hands. Such a disappointment! read more
