I was in the final days of vacation with my family in Gig Harbor, WA when I noticed a funny sound and some smoke coming from under the hood of our Honda Pilot. This happened just as we were about to get on Hwy 16. We pulled over and checked Yelp for a nearby auto repair shop and Mackert popped up. We drove over worried about how serious the problem might be given we were two days away our departure date and a 600 mile drive home. Chris greeted us at the front desk and was happy to come out and take a look at our car. He carefully inspected the car but wasn't able to pinpoint the problem. He informed us that their shop was booked out several weeks and gave us some other shops to check in with. Knowing we had to hit the road in 2 days Chris said to come back if we couldn't find anyone to help us. We tried four other places who all said they were too busy to fix our car. In desperation, we called Chris back and he said they would make time for our car. Suffice to say Mackert went the extra mile and got us back on the road in a couple of days and home safely. I have to say I do not normally write reviews for places. I always so I will but never do. For this business I have to make the time. I had scheduled an appointment but when I went to fill my gas tank I had an EMERGENCY. Some creep cut the filler hose to my gas tank and there was no way to put gas in my truck. I drove to them and asked if I could just it there until my appointment the following week. They were very accommodating and I was happy that I had even though last minute and not a regular customer they were more then accommodating. The best part is that they looked at truck the next day (Wed vs the next Mon) even though they didn't have an appointment available, and let me know the issue. They ordered the parts and thankfully were in the next day. Which was still four days prior to my original appointment. I can not say enough and wish my schedule was accommodating enough to use them more often. They were very nice and I would HIGHLY recommend them. read more

We moved to Gig Harbor and got our oil changed here last September. We got the wiper blade yelp promotion which was really nice as the wipers were ready for replacement. During the oil change, an additive was used which seems to have stopped us from adding more oil :). A few months later we had an unrelated code/error. I was looking into buying a truck from Gig Harbor Motor Company (a review I'll post here in a second) and saw that this place was well reviewed on some other sites and went for it. All I was looking for was a pre-purchase inspection on the truck. I was informed on the phone that this was a free service, which made me happy. When I got there the staff was friendly and professional. I sat and waited while they inspected the truck and gave me the verdict; as promised, there was no charge. Sitting in the waiting room gave me a good perspective on their customer service. It seemed like everyone coming in was a repeat customer and was treated well. I took it as extra evidence that the shop was trustworthy. If they were closer to me I would use them for all of my auto maintenance. Unfortunately it's about an hour and fifteen minute drive. I took my XC90 in because it had a terrible "clunk" coming from the rear right. I had taken it to another mechanic in Gig Harbor, and after several attempts he couldn't solve the issue (and thus didn't charge me, keeping me loyal). I then took it to Volvo of Tacoma (read my reviews on this place) and they told me it was "nothing" and for $525 they could put a spring isolator on to "muffle the sound." So I took it to Mackert after running into an employee at another store. In one day they had identified and fixed the issue. Great customer service, fantastic techs, good prices. I'm staying loyal to my other mechanic for most basic repairs, but these guys have my business for all major issues. read more

My experience here was great overall. My car was there for routine maintenance and ended up needing a few additional fixes. My radiator hoses were overdue to be replaced, so they were scheduled to be replaced the following day, however the incorrect parts were delivered to the shop. This was probably not the fault of the shop, but it's hard to know for sure. With that delay, the job could not be completed until Monday, meaning I would be without a car for the weekend. Thankfully, Mackert offered to let me use one of their loaner vehicles for the weekend, which was a great option! Throughout the process, they were very good about communicating with me, and I always felt like they were being honest about the needs of my car - I haven't always felt this way when working with other mechanics, so that was wonderful! read more

I left my 2002 Jetta with them, and asked them to verify whether or not my timing belt had broken. They were able to confirm this for me without charging me a dime! They offered to perform a $100 "check-up" to determine how much it would cost to repair my car, but I declined, and decided to cut my losses and sell it for whatever I could get. They allowed me to keep the Jetta in their parking lot for 48 extra hours while I found a buyer. They didn't even complain! Great people here! read more

So disappointed with Mackert Automotive. I bought a car from their previous Service Manager, Jarod, about a year ago for our daughter's first car. The car itself is an amazing value and is awesome! It began to have some issues and I found out that it was most likely a sensor. I told Jarod and he told me to take it to Mackert. He said they would be fair and take good care of us. Please know that the car has VERY LOW miles, (about 49,000 for a 2006) and it only driven one to two times per week locally. First, we took the car to O'Reilly's to have the code read. Come to find out, it was the Camshaft Locator Sensor. I did my homework to see how much parts and labor would approximately cost us from a mechanic's shop. $150 - $200 for parts and labor is the average for a shop to charge. I then called Mackert Auto and spoke with Justin, their new service manager and explained the entire situation and history. He said he would take good care of us. I was told that the diagnostic would cost us $50 - $150. I explained that it is the Camshaft sensor and he said that we should be on the low end for the diagnostic cost, unless they find something else wrong with the vehicle. I felt very confident that the it was the Camshaft Locator Sensor. We dropped off the car at 7:45 am and around 2:15 pm that day I received a phone call that INDEED it WAS the Camshaft sensor. He then proceeded to tell me the cost.... $378!!!!!! I told him that was absurd. That made no sense what-so-ever. He proceeded to basically rattle off a script; they have "overhead to pay", they never said they are the "least expensive in town", their "parts are guaranteed for 3 years", they "only use the best parts" and that their "mechanics are specially certified". Again, I said that was absolutely ridiculous. I asked how much he charged me for the diagnostic. He said $65+. I said "how can that be if I already told you what was wrong with the car and it was exactly what I told you"? He said he charges by how long it takes their mechanic to diagnose it. I was stunned. I called another shop immediately and told them what had just happened. I asked if it was a fair price. No, I was told it was not. I was quoted $128.00 for parts and labor by the other shop. The car has now been fixed and my total was exactly what I was quoted fairly, $128.42 to be exact. He asked if Mackert charged me for the diagnostic after all of this and I said "yes", but he lowered it to $50. He was blown away.... read more
