I decided to get a second opinion at Gig Harbor Automotive, and I'm so glad I did. They treated me incredibly well from start to finish and performed a very thorough diagnostic. The technician scoped the engine and ruled out sticky valves completely. Instead, they found that the dealership had installed the wrong spark plug in cylinder 2. What really stood out was that the technician took extra time after hours to walk me through everything he found and explain it in detail. Bottom line: they are honest, thorough, and fair which is hard to find these days. I truly appreciate their integrity and highly recommend them.

I DROVE my car into Bitterlings, approved $500 worth of work, then got 2 more calls about an additional $200, then $150 worth of work needed. $850 total. When I was told I'd be able to pick my car up, I got another call that a part had FALLEN OFF my engine and it is NO LONGER RUNNING, requiring an additional $1050 worth of work to get it running again, a total of $1900. The car was older and almost at 100k miles so the estimated necessary work total had exceeded the value of the car. They still REQUIRED THAT I PAID the $850, even though this work did nothing to fix the vehicle because it NOW WON'T START. I also, went by the shop on a Saturday (not realizing they were closed for the entire weekend) to find my car parked on their lot with the DOORS UNLOCKED and my personal belongings inside. I was lucky nothing was stolen because they have signs all over their office saying they are not responsible for stolen property - so had anything been stolen, it would have been my responsibility, not theirs for leaving my vehicle unlocked on their unfenced, not secure property while they were closed with no one on site for 63 hours. ---- I am upset with the service here because I feel like I was taken advantage of and price gouged instead of hearing from an experienced mechanic about the extent of the work needed to repair my car. I was never given a full picture of the damage my car had sustained, instead I was told small estimates at separate times totaling to a lot of money that never actually fixed the car. Keep in mind, this car was running when I brought it to them so I basically paid for them to break my car and ask for even more money to fix that. I got multiple calls and estimates throughout the day while they were working on my car: 1st call- I was told I was lucky that I only needed $500 worth of work,  2nd call - thermometer needed to be replaced $200, 3rd call - small repair for oil leak $150. After approving all of this work and the 3rd time I had talked to them, they mentioned that the timing chain was stretched but I was told that it DIDN'T NEED TO BE FIXED and I could pick my car up by the end of the day. As the end of the day approached, I called to ask about picking up my car. She called back to tell me that while THE MECHANIC WAS DRIVING MY CAR OUT FOR PICKUP, THE TIMING CHAIN HAD FALLEN OFF AND NOW THE CAR WILL NOT START! To fix this they estimated an additional $1050 of work ($1,900 total). I said no to the work because I wanted to do some research, as now the total of all the work already approved and required, exceeded the value of the vehicle. Moneeba called me multiple times the day after my car broke asking for a decision on doing the additional work but when I asked for the estimates in writing she could not provide anything in writing. Moneeba said THEY DON'T PROVIDE ESTIMATES IN WRITING therefore, I must write it down myself (which is actually against the law in Washington to not provide written estimates for work over $100). She said she would try to put an invoice together with the work I had approved but it took 2 days to finally get the repairs they had done in writing. Still no written estimate for the work required to get the car running again. When I came in to speak to Moneeba and discuss options, she was defensive and demanding that they had done nothing wrong. The only thing that she did to right the wrongs of her shop (and I doubt she would have had I not requested it) was due to the fact that I could no longer drive my car off the property -  was she didn't charge me to store my car on the lot past the week mark while I tried to sell it. I'd also like to point out that the old owner, Don, no longer owns this auto shop and most of these reviews are for the business he ran. Bitterling's is not accredited by the BBB. Save yourself the hassle and stress I went through and go somewhere else!

I happen to own a unique Subaru Legacy. I love independent repair shops where the owner is there every day at the front desk or in the shop. Josh usually answers the phone and knows Subarus well. When I go to any of the factory authorized dealers the service managers don't know Subarus, don't own Subarus, don't touch a Subaru with a wrench themselves. When you go to a specialty shop that is all they do from the front desk backward, talk and think Subaru. Factory authorized dealers hide their service departments. Specialty shops don't and you're always able to have something pointed out in the shop while the car is on a lift. Dealership service managers take a percentage of the repairs they can scare you into for too high a price. Roopair repairs for way less using factory authorized parts or better if you like. Josh has a hard job, harder than a factory authorized dealer. After 17 years he knows he must be honest with customers and helpful to build a long-term relationship. I admire Josh he is direct and honest in a most polite fashion. His sense of humor and honesty is actually delightful and colorful. His customers appreciate his consistency and management. I appreciate the quality of workmanship and dedication. I don't mind driving an hour for specialty service. When that didn't work I drove around determined not to go back and just find another shop to rip me off. Months and months later I finally decided to only see someone who specialized in Subarus and called Roorepair. I didn't even totally describe my problem when they said "Sounds like an axel." And they were right, they fixed it. The price was fair compared to others and they got me schedule & then out quickly. I had a good enough experience that when I was about to 200k miles and needed a tune up, I called them. I was quoted at $1400 and they offered a free loaner car since I'd be dropping it off overnight. Which was a huge weight off my mind of arranging for rides and/or uber. They were honest with me about recharging my AC (they weren't able to for that year) and said my car was in good shape and didn't need extra work, didn't try to upsell me in anyway. They're a good shop.

When it was finished - they called and when I arrived it was ready - not just done but cleaned interiorly smelling fresh and ready to drive. Stan was very accommodating and was very honest in his assessment . Anytime your car is tied up it is difficult - but when working in coordination it goes much smoother - and that was my experience - after a week there have been no adjustments needed or discoveries made .
