I've done a lot of research in the oc and la area trying to find a trustworthy trainer for my pup, from recommendation, Yelp, blogs, making many phone calls. I found out about Cynthia from my friend and other dog owners at the dog park I frequently visited. They all had great things to say and I witnessed the positive improvements that were made. During our consultation, Cynthia took the time to really understand the situation, our goals and did a great job setting expectations for our pup Haku after assessing his behavior. Shiba owners here and the staff are sooo understanding. Haku is 2 years old doesn't like strangers and experienced traumatic encounters with other dogs and people. He is the sweetest pup but he can be aggressive and bite when triggered. Cynthia and her staff helped to build his confidence and his trust with people and other dogs. We started working with Cynthia when we got our first Sheepadoodle puppy this year in February and had our first 1 on 1 lessons when he was 2 months old. We heard about Mac's Canine Consultants and Cynthia through a family member. Our dog, Daisy, is a senior dog (8 years old) who is very anxious. I had my rescue (who was highly super sensitive, biting, insecure, aggressive) GSD 7 months before I decided that Cynthia was going to be the last resort for us. Prior to Board and Train we used Cynthia's other services such a Doggie Daycare and Board for the weekend! Our dog got so much structure, training, play time, rest time and love from Cynthia and everyone on her team! It makes going away a lot less stressful when you know your dog is in the right hands. We also used 2 weeks board and train with Cynthia Jan 2021 and when Hazel came back she was unrecognizable! She learned to be calm, to listen, stay in place, had a potty schedule, could walk with tons of distractions in public and give me "eyes" and not react. I am so glad I found them! I have a 100lb lab puppy that got into bad habits quickly. Teddy, my dog, started demand-barking at me and it got a little scary not gonna lie. Prior to that, he ate my couch, my baseboards, the legs of every piece of furniture, and I was in over my head - not going to lie. I did some quick research one day as I was walking Teddy and he was pulling me all over the neighborhood. I was in tears as he barked and jumped on everything and everyone. He has a deep loud bark and the neighbors were afraid of us and avoided us. I called them in tears after reading their reviews on yelp and Alex answered the phone immediately. He was so compassionate and kind on the phone and accommodated my schedule to come for a home visit the very next day at 7 PM. I think it was on a Tuesday. By Thursday I dropped off Teddy at their training home in Costa Mesa. After a couple of days, I realized I hadn't really asked any questions and I signed a pretty big investment over without really knowing what I was to expect or getting into. I will say I never thought I would be "one of those people" who had their dog on an e-collar or a crate. At that point though I was ready to try anything because I started to have doubts about my ability to care for Teddy in my apartment. I called Cynthia and she relived all of my worries about the crate and my ability to care for Teddy. Regardless if Ted had a ten-bedroom home with a huge family he would still need structure, she assured me. Part of that structure was his crate. After over an hour on the phone with her, she relieved all of my worries and made everything perfectly clear. She started sending me videos of Teddy sitting in Home Depot while shoppers went around him. I was in complete disbelief!! I was so excited to get my dog back. Fast forward almost three weeks. Our rescue dog, Neville, is much happier and less anxious since coming back from his Board and Train with Cynthia. About a month after his adoption, he starting having frequent barking fits including one that lasted all night. All the other comments people have posted are completely true, so I'm not going to restate what what has been said. If you are like us, you have an ideal of what a good dog should behave and act like. You probably seen some youtube training videos or done one of those Petco or Petsmart training classes. After all that, your dog still is not behaving like you want. Maybe you start making excuses for your dog, telling people "he is not always like this" or "that usually never happens." Maybe on walks you start walking faster to keep up you with your dog so there is less pulling and it seems like you are in control. Maybe you find yourself getting more and more frustrated, maybe you get neighbor dog envy and wonder how come my dog doesnt behave like that. My boyfriend and I worked with Cynthia and one of her trainers for one-on-one sessions and for a two-week board and train. Our dog, Jenkins, is a 1 year old chihuahua terrier mix with a lot of energy! He would constantly pull on his leash, wouldn't listen much to commands unless there were treats involved, and would resource guard his toys and bully sticks. We set up five one-on-one sessions which went pretty well. Jenkins learned how to place in his crate and stay there and how to walk slightly better on his leash (he still pulled a lot but we could at least get his attention with treats). Overall, my boyfriend and I were pretty happy with the one-on-one sessions. After the five private sessions, we sent Jenkins to the two-week board and train at Cynthia's apartment. Cynthia has spoken with us and said she would be able to get Jenkins to be off leash and comfortable in public places such as airports (we wanted to take him on a plane). When Jenkins came home, he was only slightly better than when we dropped him off. He could not walk off leash and still pulled on the leash for most of the walk. He definitely could not be in public places without pulling on the leash, barking at other dogs, and trying to say hello to every person. He also was still resourcing guarding. He had slightly better recall when we would give him commands. When we spoke to Cynthia about the results after the board and train, she told us that we would need to constantly be working with Jenkins to see the results she told us she could achieve. Maybe we were naive to think that she could get results in two weeks, but we are new dog owners, so we trusted that if she said she could get him off leash and comfortable in public places, she would be able to do that while he was at board and train. We understand that Jenkins is a high energy and easily distractible dog, but we feel like Cynthia over promised and under delivered. During the board and train, Cynthia uses e-collars with the dogs. When she first explained e-collars to us, she said it was like a tap on the shoulder. However, when she was teaching us how to use the e-collar on Jenkins, sometimes we would shock him and he would yelp while his neck was twitching (we didn't think a "tap on the shoulder" would make a dog yelp). She said it was fine that he was yelping, and that we needed to use whatever shock level would get him to respond to commands, even if it meant he was making noises or yelping. We researched e-collars online and read from a lot of trainers that dogs shouldn't be in pain or making crying noises while using the e-collar: if this happens, then the shock level is too high. I mentioned this to Cynthia later, and she changed her previous answer: she said that Jenkins should never be crying or yelping while using the e-collar. Unfortunately, this interaction made us doubt her credibility. The board and train program is also supposed to come with two free one-on-one sessions. Cynthia told us she would follow up about the one-on-one sessions, but she never did. We decided not to follow up because we felt it was unprofessional of her to not contact us and we were frustrated with the overall process. She ended up reaching out to use months later about joining her facebook group, but never mentioned our free sessions ... Overall, while it seemed like Cynthia genuinely cared about the dogs she worked with, we did not have a great experience. We found the board and train to be a bit expensive, and we didn't see the results we expected. I found Cynthia on yelp and thought, even though she has a low amount of reviews I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt. It's quality over quantity. And boy, was i proven right. I couldn't have dreamed to find someone that was as caring, understanding, and actually truly LOVES what she does with dogs, until i found Cynthia. She was firm but loving. Exactly what we needed. We have had other trainers in the past that we've had private lessons with. All the clicking & treating etc was exhausting and unhelpful. I finally got my boys back from a two week board and train, pug(1 1/2) and terrier mix(7), and what a difference! We sent our 1 1/2 yr old boxer that we adopted at 6 mos old for training. He was quite a jumper. Whenever our son would bring over his 2 yr old shepherd, it was impossible for them to get along. This shepherd had already been through training here and would be joined with our boxer in daycare. After two weeks, our boxer Popeye was brought back to our home to show us what he had learned. Cynthia also gave us some tips and tricks to use on him. I was so emotional. He seemed like a completely different dog. He was so well behaved. When shepherd Von comes over now, both dogs play together until they tire each other out. It's a pleasure to take the boxer out walking now. Cynthia is a caring and animal loving trainer. We took our pug and Parsons terrier to Cynthia. What a difference! Both of our dogs are sweet but needed discipline and we also needed to have the training and tools to maintain it once they came home. I am really happy that we decided to use Mac's Canine Consultants for help with our dog.
