I wish I could give more stars since the fam and I come up to Maine multiple times a year and Mac's is right on the way. We only tried New England clam chowder. Looking for the best lobster roll while visiting my son in Lewiston, ME, Yelp lead me here. This is a casual dining spot where you order at the counter and wait till your number is called. There are plenty of fresh seafood options including chowder and lobster stew. There is both indoor and outdoor seating available. I happened to go on the day the lobster salad roll was on special for $16. I also ordered fried pickles for $7. The lobster salad roll was in a nicely toasted hotdog bun. The roll was jammed pack with a mayo based lobster salad which looked and tasted fresh. It was very good and a generous serving. Fried pickles were good as well. I did not see a restroom but there is ample parking. I left full and satisfied after eating outside. I would recommend and would return. read more

I vacation in Maine every summer and Mac's is my standing tradition! It's a dream about meal all year long. This is a no fuss and no frills type of place - just like I like! It is basically a food stand with a few tables and chairs inside and maybe 10 picnic tables outside. It's right off a busier (for Maine) road so take the food to go if you are wanting an ambiance. I prefer it hot and fresh on site! It's also just so fun to watch all the magic happen before your eyes! It's a totally open and small kitchen so you get to see all the dipping and deep fry happening! My must haves: Lobster bisque - que tears. What's so delicious about the bisque is that it isn't thick or floury. It is a butter cream base broth with heaps of fresh lobster. It's a MUST, Fried clam strips - I prefer the strips to the halves because they are just more fun. Crumb coating and as fresh as it comes. Get some housemade tartar and cocktail and you're set! Lobster roll - best in Maine! Really. They load up those giant lobster pieces. I get mine clear meat (no mayo) and it's just ridiculously good. The prices are decent too! I miss the charm of the old red shack but truly it was moldering into the earth so the move was understandable. Their new digs ( the old Gifford ice cream stand on Minot ave. ) suits them. Note there is very limited seating indoors but there are several picnic tables in the surrounding lot. The food is just what you are hoping for in fresh seafood. Lobster rolls come in 3 sizes, your choice of clear meat or salad style with a little mayo. Plenty of lobster no matter the size you choose. Delicious! Fresh cut French fries and coke products in the cooler. Service was friendly and quick. There is malt vinegar for fries which is an A+ in my book! Great food. We had a variety of items from the menu and it was all very good. Fried shrimp, fried chicken tenders, fried clam, grilled cheese, and butter lobster roll. All seasoned well and crispy. Live lobster onsite. Atmosphere was like a seafood market with plenty of seating inside and outside. No bugs or flies to be seen anywhere! We were greeted upon arrival and everyone was friendly. If you're not from Auburn, this hidden gem is worth a road trip! It's an adorable little seafood shack with a great outdoor eating area and a small indoor one also. Every time I stop there the staff greets me kindly with a smile and all seem to have great knowledge of their products. One of the cooks there was kind enough to let my rambunctious 3yr old look at all the lobsters in the big tank. He loved it! Their clam chowder ACTUALLY has clams in it, yes you read right, not all potatoes and onion, actual chunks of sweet clams! Amazing! Their selection of fresh seafood is gorgeous and I always leave with more than I planned. You want nice big sea scallops, they have them fresh almost everyday. They pick fresh lobster meat right at the store that's cooked to perfection, never rubbery or stringy. I can't help but leave there with a pound of each! ‍‍ Oh AND, they'll steam your lobsters for you right there to save you the mess and hassle at home. Always solid but certainly not the place for an inexpensive dinner. Things that could be improved: real/metal silverware would be nice; offering beer would be nice (but I'm sure there's a liquor license issue so probably more trouble than it's worth for them). I keep going back though because the food (especially the lobster rolls) is delicious. read more

We always go to Mac's Downeast Seafood when we want to go out for seafood! They have hands down the best in the area. The sea scallops are always the most fresh, huge, perfectly cooked and delicious thing. Every. Time. The whole belly clams are always cleaned and never overcooked or full of sandy bellys. We didn't have it this time, but the frie haddock is always delicious and on point. All of the retail seafood in the case looks so good I have been to the local competition and I would rather this tiny little place with paper plates and plastic utensils with the freshest and tastiest food over their full service sit down style competitors any day! read more

As a Trucker you shouldn't travel to Maine and not get some local seafood! This is my 2nd time in Maine and I couldn't pass up grabbing a Lobster Roll while waiting for my load to be ready! When ordering understand that "clear meat" simply means it's meat only not lobster salad‼ makes a huge difference! I got mine with butter only I wanted to really enjoy the lobster the bread was toasted to perfection! Personally I will get the larger portion next time because this was gone in no time! Amber was my cashier and she was very sweet helping me understand the differences on the menu! I will definitely be back! This is not my first review for Macs Downeast seafood, but it was my first time witnessing an unhappy customer because he chose to walk in at closing time and tried to order a steam lobster and was told no. I will be the first to say that the owner of Macs has every right to close his business on time. To the trucker who walked in at 6:57pm ordering the steamed lobster.... your a complete jerk and rude bastard. To tell the owner of this establishment that he should cook you a meal because you came from up the road and wanted a maine lobster dinner because your from Washington your a complete jerk off. You had the balls to tell him he has "lazy fisherman" hours.... what a tool. These folks are the kindest and extremely hard working people. Ive dined here at least 10 times in the past 16 months including bringing my coworkers and boss. Lets just say tbat after a week of dining in Maine, mostly in Portland we were most happy with Macs. At Macs you get what you expect to get, extremely fresh and delicious seafood, and great portions. This place was super amazing! My first time here and I got the large Haddock sandwich for $8. It was fantastic and they didn't skimp on anything, it comes with tartar sauce, lettuce, tomato, and cheese. The portion was a good size too! They sell fresh raw seafood, have a lobster tank, and I literally saw a fisherman come and deliver fresh fish while I was waiting for my order. I added a side of coke slaw which was also good. This is classic Maine seafood, but I have never as it this good so many miles from our coast... 5 out of 5 the only downside is the place is small inside and was quite busy on a Friday, (all of us Catholics need our Friday Fish) but there are about 10 picnic tables out in the shade to eat at...
