So I walked to the bar to find out if I needed to be seated or just help myself. The bartender stated to sit anywhere I wanted. I told her I was interested in food as well so she handed me a menu. I asked if I needed to come to the bar to order and was told I would be waited on. BC of previous reviews I timed stuff. 3 min after sitting at a random table I was acknowledged and told she would be right back. 1 min later she was asking what I wanted to eat and if I wanted anything to drink. The food menu did not have wine only beer and soda. There is a separate menu for wine. Stella, my waitress was back momentarily with that. After placing my order food arrived within 10 min. The outside and even the front entry give the vibe of a "hole in the wall" so we were prepared to simply fill our stomachs, especially since we arrived "after the grill was closed" which in this case simply meant that the head cook had left. But a very, very pleasant hostess assured us everything on the menu was still up for grabs. We sat down in the front cafe, which has that feeling of a place that's been around since the 1970's and only occasionally renovated. Given my fifty years of restaurant experience, I was still in the mindset of being content just to have something to eat, so long as it was edible. My wife and I both were blown away. I forget what she had but it was "the best one she had ever had", and my barbeque sandwich was absolutely delicious. The crinkle-cut fries were hot, just crispy enough. Our expectations were exceeded by a mile, and it wiped away any preconceived notions I may have had by looking at the restaurant's physical presence. Our hostess, name forgotten but I hope she remembers being on duty on Wednesday the 13th and making our night, was always smiling, always gracious; and despite her having to attend to the back of the restaurant where the bar was located, she never left us hanging. The icing on the cake was the price! A comparable BBQ-and-fries anywhere in my hometown of Redmond, OR, is easily 17 bucks these days. My meal at The Grove was $12.99, a solid four dollars less expensive and yet still superb, everything I like in a BBQ sandwich and fries. Obviously I cannot speak to the daytime staff, or the barroom experience, but my wife and I left extremely happy and satisfied, and if we ever pass through Cottage Grove again, The Grove will be our first choice for grabbing a meal.

Several performers weren't just "good for karaoke," they were legitimately, bafflingly excellent. Like, "should probably be charging admission or at least bothering Broadway agents" levels. One individual in particular possessed the kind of voice that makes you wonder why they're belting show tunes in a dimly lit Eugene bar on a Friday and not, you know, on a stage where people pay actual money. It was impressively non-awful. Actually, scratch that. It was great. Shockingly so. Drinks? Perfectly serviceable. Major points for the extensive non-alcoholic menu. They seemed genuinely willing to de-booze pretty much anything on request, which is handy if you're the designated listener to Eugene's hidden musical theatre gems. Staff were friendly enough, didn't seem phased by the slightly goth-adjacent vibe the place cultivates. Points for atmosphere. The singer's area wins for comfort - actual couches you can sink into while contemplating the life choices that led that phenomenal voice. The DJ deserves a medal. Actively prowling the darker corners of the bar, gently coercing the shy into public performance? Effective. Almost concerningly so.
