The Marquee House is a beautiful dance club that opened in late August in place of the old Mojitos…read moreCountry Club. There's a terrible dearth of dance clubs in suburban Boston and Marquee is trying to fill the gap. Fridays are Latin nights and Saturdays are what they call "Old School R&B, Hip Hop & Reggae". I'll describe Saturdays below as I've not been to any Latin nights. The club consists of three areas. First, there's a lower room where older (70s/80s/90s) dance music is played. The DJ is good and the room is nicely laid out with some cushy seating, stand-up tables, and a rather long bar. There's plenty of room for dancing. The crowd trends towards older (which includes me!). It wasn't a large crowd tonight; I'm not sure if this is normal or not. Second, there's the main club, which is much larger and much more crowded. There, we have an excellent DJ mixing newer music, e.g. 2000s and on with a few older songs. It's louder and he produces a nice steady R&B dance groove most of the night, omitting the slow dreary hip-hop that has emerged the past decade or so. There are two bars and the place is well-decorated and looks fairly modern. Clearly, a lot of thought was put into how to transform it from whatever it used to look like. The crowd consists of a nice mix of ethnic groups (black, white, & Hispanic), with everyone feeling comfortable and enjoying themselves. The third is what they refer to as the Lounge, which is the section you pass through before you go to either of the clubs I described above. It has a bar, some dancing, and places to sit. It's a good place to go if either of the main rooms are too crowded. They serve some food (pizza, wings, warm doughnuts) there also before the other rooms open at 9:00. The crowd was well-behaved with no one overdoing the drinking and the Creepy Guy count was quite low so women should be happy. There's plenty of parking and there's also a police presence but they had nothing to do and just strolled around. The staff is very nice--a number of them used to work at the old Vincent's down the street. Overall, Marquee is an excellent place for people to dance & socialize without having to go into the city. It may need a little polishing here and there but that will probably be taken care of later. I think it's time for people to get out from behind their computers & tablets and try to actually meet and mingle a bit. Marquee would be a good place to start.

Not a safe space for young women. An older man followed me around, and would not leave me alone…read more Dance Friday staff were only moderately responsive to my report. My two friends (one male, one female) and were dancing together for most of the night. An older man with white hair started circling the three of us, with his eyes lasering in on me the whole time. My friend finally commented on his weird behavior and we all went to sit down. Later on, I heard one song I really like, and got up to dance. The old guy made a beeline for me as soon as he saw me, and got really close to me. I gestured to him to stop (palm towards him, meaning "stop", with a stern look), and went to the other side of the dance floor. He then FOLLOWED ME across the dance floor and kept it right up, dancing really closely and staring at me. I gestured "stop" again, and moved far away from him, and he followed me AGAIN. This dude just would not quit. Then he started waving his hands towards my body, getting close, almost touching me. I left the floor. At the end of the night, I went and told the facilitators. The younger guy I told just stood there, with an annoyed look on his face that read as "this isn't my problem". The older woman I told said that I should have told her about this at the break (even though my friends and I had showed up AFTER the break). She said something about "filling out an incident report", but she didn't explain the process, meanwhile, people were breaking down the lights and equipment, and it was getting noisy. This woman didn't create a space to deal with the issue, and she made no effort to follow up with me. She offered me free admission next time, and she said that she hoped me coming again would involve "shifting my experience" of what had happened. This pretty well pissed me off, as it's this harassing guy's BEHAVIOR that needs to shift, not my perception of it. Having been blamed for not reporting an incident before it happened, and having gotten nowhere with the staff, I got my stuff, left, and never went back. If you are a young woman, do not go! Creepy old men will descend on you, which apparently is just business-as-usual to these people. I imagine they think of it as "breaking down the boundaries" and "being intergenerational", but it's really just a place with poor security, where men are allowed to get away with predatory behavior. Growing old does not magically make a person good! There are creeps of all ages. One of them has white hair and a propensity for circling young women like a creaky old shark at Dance Friday.

Two to three separate DJs per night spin a wide variety of dance music from all genres. Its non-judgmental attitude has been keeping people sane and healthy for decades! The music is hipper, with more variety & consistent quality than the previous locations. Hours are now 8:30 to Midnight except on the 3rd Friday of the month when we start an hour earlier so parents can bring young kids for some adult-and-child-friendly music. Don't worry... no Barney or Disney!! There's even a dance camp run every Summer where the same loose friendly creative juicy atmosphere goes on for about 11 days straight! Be sure to check out the sister dance (and original) Dance Freedom in Harvard Square on Wed. nights, too. If you really love to dance for its own sake as well as for social reasons, if you like to 'sweat your prayers,' if you like shaking off the tensions of the week and enjoy having a body again, you have to give it a try. Pure pleasure. Interesting creative people. Enjoy! Re: "The painful truth" review, there are two sides to everything. I deeply regret the experience this woman had. We have people to help with safety issues and we have had many discussions of behaviors that are not allowed, body language, etc. to prevent such events. We have banned dancers occasionally over the years for behavior like this. We encourage dancers to use their voice (in case for instance the offending person's sight was not good, or gestures were misinterpreted), and there are designated people to get a message across when it is not understood & respected coming from the dancer themselves. Forward people can be found on any dance floor, but Dance Friday IS a SAFE place.

The outside of the restaurant-turned-club does look like its dive bar predecessor, but the inside is dark, classy, and cozy - with a good dose of flashy lights and bling after dark. Since it was a special event as part of the "dbarLIVE" series, we had to make reservations a few weeks in advance on Open Table -- no cover or minimum for the reservation. We had a table of 6 that eventually crammed 8 together in a booth right next to the stage and bar areas. I worried we'd be blasted by the speakers and lights, but the acoustics were robust but well balanced. Our server was great and had good recommendations for drinks and food. Both menus have a ton of options without being too overwhelming. I was especially impressed by how the staff expertly wove in and out of the tables and remained attentive during the performances. I am a slow drinker so I just got The Saint, which I would definitely recommend even though I don't usually get whiskey-based cocktails. (The Tall Man, who does love whiskey, also enjoyed it.) I had already eaten dinner, so I shared the Vietnamese fries and tuna ceviche with a friend. The fries did not quite hit home for me. I enjoy all of those flavors individually, but it ended up being too heavy with the sauces, and the fries got soggy in a way that wasn't that pleasant. (I do like poutine, so go figure.) I really enjoyed the freshness, flavors, and texture combinations of the ceviche, though. The winner of the night was the lemon tart by far -- smoky torched gooey meringue on a perfectly tart lemon filling and biscuit base. Definitely full of gluten and dairy but very worth the indulgence! I'd love to come back for a regular dinner here and would definitely return for a special event too. Parking in the lot is limited, but there's a good amount of street parking.

This is one of the worst nightclubs I have ever been to…read more There was a pretty popular DJ playing here that I was ecstatic to see, so I bought tickets in advance to go see them. It was also one of the official afterparties for Breakaway Mass. The ticket I purchased was also for "floor standing" btw. Little did I know that the "floor" I was expecting to be on when I purchased my ticket online was actually the entire vip area that was barricaded. So the actual dance floor where the DJ is, is ridiculously far from common areas that it just made it hard to enjoy. If that's how it was going to be, AT LEAST PUT THAT SOMEWHERE???? I never would have gone and wasted my time in the first place!! Extremely misleading. At least it was only $25. If you weren't in VIP, you had to be above the stairs next to the bar area and the sofas where there's even less space! Additionally, the crowd here is weak and rude. The workers seemed rude too. Everybody, including those on the dance floor were just standing and going on their phones, not a single person dancing. You needed a wristband to go down to the vip area, and I also noticed only a certain type of person was getting wristbands to go down there *cough cough* ANYWAYS, this was my first impression of Boston nightlife and it was clearly not a good one. At least this subpar experience was good for one thing: it's made me realize how ever-so grateful I am to be a socal resident where nightlife is much better and I will never take it for granted again so thank you :)
