I wanted to take my husband somewhere where he could absolutely feast on seafood for his birthday. Somewhere casual. Those kinds of places are few and far between around here. Honestly, I even considered Red Lobster for a hot minute, then the hallelujah chorus started when I remembered Mad Seafood Boiler existed (thanks Yelp search). The atmosphere is sort of good. The decor is nice, but still feels casual. The tvs on the wall help that, and also allow you to catch the game while feasting. We arrived around 5:30 on a Friday and it was pretty empty, but it slowly got busier by the time we left. It felt like there were a lot of staff milling about, but service was a little slow at the start. So, the vibe was a little weird at first. Bonus-there was a birthday wheel where you could win a variety of menu freebies. He won a free beer. The food was great and at a reasonable price point. Hubby had king crab in garlic butter, no spice and shrimp in cajun butter, medium spice. He loved it all. Said it was cooked perfectly. I had a combo plate with snow crab, shrimp and mussels with everything butter and mild spice (due to spice level recommendations on here). It came with a small piece of corn, about 6 potato halves and surprisingly no sausage (I didn't miss it, so didn't say anything). I had to add hot sauce to the shrimp (mild spice was too mild for me), which was actually good because the vinegar tang added a nice note. The snow crab was a bit overcooked and hard to eat. Mussels and shrimp were perfect. I'd happily come back here again if in the mood for this kind of meal. A fun place to celebrate a birthday. read more

Update: Less than a week later and came back. Even better, as less crowded and seafood was steamed a little less. Perfect. Don't expect big crawfish, but do expect exceptional flavor. Clams and mussels are excellent. Suggest three sauce combo option, and spiciness tends to low end of scale so I would suggest if you like medium order hot, and hot order extra hot. The small combo was still a good deal of food and very satisfying. They really should provide a few moist wipes with the meal as you are going to use your hands. Nice to wipe before, during so you can drink your wine/beer, and after. Still, a different experience for Madison and very good anywhere. Initial Review: We did not try the sushi, but it did look quite good, the chefs were careful, and the selection very good. This review is about the seafood boiling. Lobster tail was large and full of sweet meat. Snow crab was excellent as the sauce/broth permeates the cluster and is awesome. The food was cooked almost perfectly. Done but not over done. Beer and wine only, but a decent selection of both. Good value for the price. A combo easily fed two adults, and I am sure would satisfy a larger appetite. Nice addition to the madison food scene. The food was delicious. And not much interaction on the inside as I ordered on yelp. But Parking is extremely hard.

I like this place. I've tried it three different times and had three different experiences; all great ones. The first time was the soft opening and there were some great specials. Free potatoes, sausage and corn. What a nice surprise. The next time -- there was a special on blue crab! Yes! Love Blue Crabs! The last time -- they had buy one get one for sushi rolls. I love all of these specials. The seasoning is great and the seafood comes out HOT. It is definitely messy -- but worth it. Tip: Get a bowl of rice to share with one other person. It helps with the spiciness. Add potatoes, sausage and corn to make the meal more filling. If you are able -- always get the shrimp and snow crabs. Totally worth it. Large pieces of shrimp that are easy to peel and the crab does not taste like it was frozen for months and does not have freezer burn, thankfully. Great for dates and groups. Family friendly. I am sure kids would love this. They also serve alcohol. Huge plus! Parking is tricky. Street parking or across the street with HopCat patrons. read more

I am not sure why this restaurant isn't more highly rated. This is one of my favorite restaurants around the area! I tried it in the beginning since it was so unique offering seafood boil and since then, I have gone back several times. I like the seafood boil combo a lot - it's such an experience and the value is so good. Combo A ($28.99) with 1/2 lb shrimp, 1/2 lb snow crab legs, 1/2 lb mussels, or 1/2 lb crawfishes or side of sausages, corn, potato, and rice is my recommendation. It can feed probably 3-4 people and the restaurant give you gloves to eat the awesome food. The snow crab legs are my favorite and the crab meat pieces are large. The sauce for the boil can be mild or spicy - it's up to you to decide. If you can't handle spice, I would suggest mild but even mild is quite flavorful. Come and give this place a try if you want a new food experience! read more

The great thing about Madison Restaurant Week is trying new restaurants ... and finding out which ones don't warrant a return visit. Mad Seafood Boiler is one of those restaurants. First impressions are everything, and this place fell short on so many levels: - I walked in the front door and a really pungent fish smell hit me. Good sushi restaurants (think: Red, Muramoto) don't smell like that. - There's a shelf unit of unorganized papers and office-y stuff next to the bar. I understand all restaurants have supplies like this, but typically patrons don't see this stuff, especially organized in a sloppy manner. It just seemed so junky to me. - What is the theme of the decor? The chairs look like they belong around a hibachi grill, the nautical wall art looks like it's from Pier 1, and the light fixtures have an uber-modern flair. None of this stuff goes together. - The menu is a mess! Certain spreads of pages were intentionally taped together so I couldn't see those offerings while other pages had sections of tape on top of the page to hide certain menu items. The staff evidently has to rotate dishes often and/or can't make a decision about what to offer on a set menu. Food first impressions: - My salmon poke bowl was actually quite good and my reason for giving 2 stars instead of 1. - The rest of the food (shrimp dumplings, takoyaki, monster roll, green tea ice cream, fried oreos) were fairly underwhelming. Fast service! We reserved a table for a group of 6 and ended up with just 4 of us but the place had no issues with the changes. Water was brought right up after we sat down which was great. We then ordered the food and the sushi and the appetizers showed up first within 15 min and then the seafood combinations came up after another 10 min. Fast Service for sure. All of the food tasted Fresh and just the right seasoning. As for the seafood, we only wished they came in a bag with the sauce to keep everything warm instead of having it in a bowl. I thought the proper name of this place was MAD BOILING CRAB. It is located in the former AJ Bombers space. Seafood, seafood, seafood is what they serve! And in plastic bags for the most part. Dan wanted to try their whole Maine lobster. And at $19.99/lb, we were all 3 game to try. (Market rates are listed at each table.) The server informed us that the Maine lobster which ranged from 1.25 lb. to 1.50 lb. We all chose garlic butter, no spice, and either potatoes or corn-on-the-cob. True to rumour, our meals arrived double bagged! Luckily we were also given plastic bibs and gloves, plus each table had a big roll of paper napkins (all very necessary). None of us had ever eaten "pre-buttered" lobster before....it was challenging to hold and crack! We appreciated the server's suggestion to place one side of a cracker on the table in order to use leverage to crack the claws...it works. It was an adventure for sure. The seafood broiler is a funky combination of US southern style seafood broiler and Japanese food. The cooked seafood comes in a few different combinations and is great for people to share and converse. My group and I (3 total) usually get combination C which is crawfish, crab legs, shrimp and clams (we sub claims for more shrimp for extra $) for around $40. We also add in a sausage, corn and rice depending on the day. The employees recommended all three flavors which is cajun, garlic butter and lemon pepper with medium spice. It's an awesome combination, so get it! Be warned that the garlic is not light so you will taste and smell like garlic for days afterwards...also ask for double gloves if you are getting crab legs to avoid staining your fingers with the smell. The sushi here is also delicious...nicely cooked/flavored rice with tender raw fish. The poke is good too but lacks options for add-ons and sauces. The cooked seafood is really their specialty, but the sushi/sashimi is a great option if you don't feel like getting messy with the broiled seafood. read more

The crab was amazing, the mussles were soft and not chewy, the shrimp was great and the garlic butter sauce was really good. I would return here for sure if I'm ever in town again.. maybe twice Staff and Service: F We were not greeted at the door. We were not told to enjoy our meal. We were not checked in on during our meal. We had to go get our check. If the service matched the food, this place would be unbeatable. If their model is to ignore patrons though, then ok I'm being harsh but then I would recommend they change that. I've only gotten delivery and takeout here, as a heads up, and I've only gotten sushi and some of the appetizers. However, so far I'm a fan! Delivery was quick, although I usually have done takeout, and that's always really fast too. I always request no extra plastic waste, as I already feel guilty enough about it, and they always respect that by not giving me a plastic bag, soy sauce packets, etc. This seems like something small, but let me tell you-- NO other restaurants have EVER read my request and listened to it. I honestly don't even expect people to, unfortunately, and the fact that this restaurant does indicates a clear level of interest in listening to and serving the customer. The people I talk to when I pick up are always efficient and nice. The sushi is good, with nothing mind-blowing in the normal, extremely-reasonably-priced specials, but I appreciate some vegetarian options including an interesting roll with black rice. Amazing food with amazing service. My boyfriend and I luckily came on his birthday, and this place has a wheel of free items you get to spin for the occasion. We ended up getting a free roll from the wheel! We started off with an order of yellowtail sushi and a black rice sushi roll since it sounded interesting. Both were pretty good but nothing outstanding. The real winner was the shrimp we ordered. 2 pounds of shrimp for only $14 a pound with 2 sides? Yes please! For the record, 2 pounds of shrimp is apparently 56 (yes we counted each and every one). The interesting thing to note is that the shrimp didn't come in a bag like usual. It was served in a black tray, which I much prefer. It was easy to grab the shrimp and dip them back in the sauce in such a fashion. We ordered a combination of sauces for the shrimp and it was so good and so buttery I couldn't get enough. The potatoes were soaked in the same sauce and were phenomenal. On top of that, our waitress was an incredibly sweet lady who checked on us constantly and provided us with everything we needed at all times. Also the logo is adorable. My friends and I decided to eat here for dinner and long story short, the food was good but the service was horrible. We were immediately seated and we waited 30 minutes to finally receive water and get our orders taken which I totally understand, because it was busy but there were others who sat after us that got their orders taken and water served which annoyed us. My friend's miso soup was forgotten and we waited an hour to get our Cajun shrimp. The Cajun shrimp was packed with flavor and so so juicy! The sushi was unimpressionable. I got the 1/2 lb crab, 1/2 lb shrimp and 1/2 crawfish and with the heads on, II believe that it's a little more if you remove the heads. The crawfish was a bit tough, the shrimp was ok and the spices weren't bad. I really just wanted garlic butter without spice. I may ask next time if I could choose that. My husband tried the chicken teriyaki special. He said it was good, but he wouldnt come back for that. This is the first seafood boiler type place that plays AMAZING music. They played Seven Lions, Illenium, and porter Robinson. If you want to eat great food and jam to great edm music, this is the place to go! The flavor of the food is like your typical boiler place. We got all three flavors and got spicy which is the second spiciest flavor they had. I like my foods spicy and I must say it wasn't that spicy. We went on a Saturday night and they were pretty busy but the service was great. If you order crab they give you each a bib, leg crusher and stick. I will definitely come here again. Honestly, it was an awesome deal. -The rolls were absolutely delicious, I even ordered them for delivery the following Friday because how much I liked them! -The Shu Mai was also really good. Savory and addicting. -Combo B was enough for the 3 of us. They bring out gloves and a bib because you have to get a little dirty. Ask for the utensils to help with the crab legs! And I'd also suggest getting some extra rice on the side just so everyone has enough. Spicy wasn't really spicy at all to me, I'd suggest if you can handle spice to just do extra spicy. I wish that the seafood soaked in the flavor a little more, but it was still pretty good! The service was good and they split our check 3 ways with cards. Coming from Charleston, SC, I've frequented good crab boil bag spots. This one could learn a thing or two. I ordered the combo wow and fries to go. For starters, when I picked it up I believe the lash at the window thought I was a driver for a delivery company. She asked me "who are you picking up for, Grubhub?" I gave her my name and she tosses the food through the window on the counter and walks away. At home, the fries were soggy (which is what happens when you pack hot things in styrofoam without venting it). To be expected from some places I guess. My real problem was the bag was bland and could've used a lot more seasoning. There was almost none. It was literally butter and just chopped up cloves of garlic. Kinda disappointing. read more

I really like the concept of mad seafood boiler, but I think it could be better. It used to be that you'd get to pick your sauce, pick your seafood, and they'd deliver it all in a bag and you'd just dig in and it was really casual. Now they serve everything on a large platter. The flavors are overall okay. I really like the "everything sauce" where they mix the garlic and butter and lemon and cajun all together. I think that the sauce is inconsistent though, sometimes "fire" is super spicy, sometimes it tastes mild. Overall though, really fun place to go with a group, and food is yummy. This is pretty much the only place in town you can get a seafood boil. I've had the best of the best in the south and this is probably as good as it will get for Madison. Don't expect fresh seafood because well it's Wisconsin! I thought the prices were kind of expensive, especially if you want to add extra corn or potatoes. I went when they first opened and ordered a pound of blue crab and crawfish with the Cajun sauce/spicy and it was delicious. I went again a few weeks later and when I tried to order the same thing again the waitress kindly told me that their Cajun option was now a dry rub instead of sauce. The only seafood boil I'll eat is if it's nice and saucy so I was disappointed they changed it to a dry rub. The 3rd time I went they changed it back to a sauce instead of dry rub (: I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of seafood boils. read more
