The staff was extremely friendly and seems to be lots of friendly locals at the restaurant. Great little American diner in the middle of Kansas (Wilson, KS is the self-proclaimed Czech capital of the U.S. with the world's largest Czech egg). The food was good and is what you'd expect from a small mom & pop place. Our waitress was very friendly & attentive. They had a basic all-you-can-eat buffet for $8.85 that included a salad bar, fried catfish & shrimp, beef/pork, beans, rolls, etc. You can get anything on the menu all day long (breakfast, lunch or dinner). They have amazing looking pies - we bought a whole apple pie but are waiting to eat it at the end of our road trip. We stumbled on this spot one night driving down I-70. The local hotel had just closed their kitchen and pointed us here. SO glad they did. Homemade bierocks, pies, and best chicken-fried chicken and chicken-fried steak we have had. You won't find a better meal between KC and Denver if you like Kansas-style home cooking. On 1/26/14, while on a cross country trip, we saw a sign for this place and thought...rural Kansas...made from scratch...how bad can this be? Sadly- horrible. There was a buffet filled with school lunch looking food, loin of pork in water, fried chicken and typical sides and an unhappy looking salad bar. My partner in crime got that which I tried and it was inedible. I ordered the bierock-I got two. These were mostly microwaved bread with very little bland filling. It may be made from scratch but under seasoned and cooked improperly. Definitely not worth the drive off the highway. read more

Food was delicious! We were the only people in the restaurant when we followed the signs to Made From Scratch. We both had gravy and biscuits and hash browns. The amount of food was crazy! Next time I will get the half order of gravy and biscuits. Their pies are the bomb. We got a piece of pumpkin and a piece of peach to go...both were still great the next day. Would totally recommend and will stop here again on our way to Colorado! For the people complaining about service, etc. You need to understand that time moves a bit slower in towns like Wilson. So we took Geoff B, Susan L's and Richard F's advice and, wow. I don't know if they either don't have working tastebuds, or just don't know what edible food tastes like. My God, I don't think my wife and I have stopped laughing since. It started with the salad bar that was filled with nothing more than old iceberg lettuce, pickled jalapeno's, garbanzo beans, and massive chunks of celery. Just throw a healthy glop of ranch on their i suppose. I mean seriously, how in the world do you put this out as a salad bar? I should step back and say that there were no more than five people in the restaurant at the time. No more than two minutes after the server took our order - fried chicken and fried fish - she came back with two burgers, asking if we'd ordered them. I just can't understand that type of incompetence. Moving onto the actual food, my gravy had clearly been sitting in a pot at room temperature, was little more than a gelatinous blob that moved like jello when I shook the plate. The chicken tasted as though it had the consistency of frozen chicken, and the mashed potatoes were cold in the middle. Did I mention that the gravy was jello? Nothing compared to my wives food. The fired fish was completely frozen in the middle. I don't even know if they cooked it. When we said something to the server she acted as though we were the crazy ones, claiming this was how they cooked all their fish. In the end, the place was little more than a hick joke that's kept us laughing three months later. Can't believe anyone actually eats this food and either enjoys it, or can live to tell about it. read more

The only reason it gets a 3 star is because I think they need to have another person working. Our waitress was sorely overworked and as a result we didn't get very good service. I had a buffett lunch there and was very dissappointed in food. The chicken was so dry I could'nt cut it with a knife. The worst part was the waitress, she had an attitude about her the minute we walked in and acted as if it killed her to wait in us, She was very unfriendly and I think she s in the wrong job and should forget trying to be a waitress. We found this place much the same way others find it. We saw their billboards while traveling down I-70. We are always on the lookout for good chicken fried steak and decided a place called Made from Scratch was worth a try. We made a mistake. This review is more about the service than the food - we never got any before deciding we had waited long enough. We got there about 5:30 PM on a Sunday. There were maybe half a dozen others there when we got there. We spent about 15 minutes deciding that we were going to have the chicken fried steak. They were out of it. We ended up ordering a burger, chicken strips and some fries among our table. Then we waited and waited and waited. Finally at 6:45 PM we had had enough and were ready to get back on the road with some restless kids. We still had a 3 hour drive ahead of us. We were pretty sure our order was the next one, but we had been there way to long. The entire hour plus we were there we saw two other tables get served. I informed the only waitress there that we had waited long enough and needed to go. She tried to tell us they were working our order. I handed her my credit card and said sorry but it was time for us to go. I told her to charge us whatever they felt they needed to, but that we needed to leave. Much to my surprise she ran my card and told me it was going to be $28 dollars and change (for me, my wife and two kids splitting a kids meal). As I signed my receipt to leave I shared my disbelief with the waitress that they were going to charge me that much. Instead of an I'm sorry, she proceeded to inform me that at least she didn't charge us for the drinks. The only thing we were served our entire hour plus there, she gave us for free. I guess the apologies for the lengthy service were reserved for those that actually were able to endure the full brunt of it and not for those passing through that really wanted to get to their destination before dark. We won't be making a return trip here and would advise others to skip the trip as well. read more

This is a small town restaurant that was recommended by someone or I would have never gone searching for it. Two in our party got the hot roast beef. It came on nice bread and was piled high with tender beef that had been cooked until it melted in your mouth. The mashed potatoes were from real potatoes cooked in the restaurant and the gravy was good. I and another person got the bierocks with house made potato chips. The meal was excellent! I think it's great that a place like this exists in this area! I ordered a bierock (the Czech/ German version of a piroshki or pierogi . . . notice the interchangeability of the p/b and k/g voiced and nonvoiced cognate pairs). The cabbage and meat filling was good, but unfortunately the whole thing had been nuked to a point where it was too hot to eat, which also made the bread part so rubbery that it was hard to get down. The gooseberry pie was good (though the ones I bake are better!), and I got a nostalgic pleasure out of seeing the folded-over half pie in the case, just like one of my old neighbors in the Ozarks used to make when a whole pie was too much for just herself and her husband! Had to wait an uncomfortably long time for service while the waitress chatted with people at a different table. Then when she finally got to me, she made a point of casually mentioning that they were closing soon! However, she was very friendly, and the wait for the food was short (of course-- they were nuking it!) To be completely honest, her nose ring also put me off a little . . . I have an eccentricity of not wanting to think about people's noses while eating. But, of course, that is a very minor complaint! read more
