We have eaten at Mamma's several times over the years and are never left wanting. We thought it would be a mixed bag during the Festival, but we were seated within minutes and the staff were very helpful and polite - which can often be hard to find in the city on a Saturday night - especially in the Grassmarket. I was a bit disappointed with the lack of spinach on my pizza, and finding out after asking for more that I was charged for it. Also, they automatically add an optional 10% gratuity to the bill - however, if I ran a restaurant in the Grassmarket, I'd probably do the same. Mamma's is the only pizza place I've seen that does a gluten free crust - which I'll definitely have to try next time. Now to eat my left over pizza...

    Calamari, black pudding and pineapple!

I love Mamas. Proper relaxed feel, superb pizzas and friendly staff. On the popular Grassmarket in Edinburgh this is prime for attracting tourists, but locals shouldn't be scared off. It's cosy inside, but I've never had a wait long for a seat. Once your sat down, you start to browse the menu - and now comes the hard bit: choosing your pizza. Mama's has a couple of pre-assigned ones but the real star is the 'choose your own' - a basic cheese & tomato (you can have the spicy sauce, which I recommend) and then you can select from a long list of ingredients - ham, chicken, chorizo, spinach, peppers, onions, pineapple, black pudding, haggis (well this is scotland), banana, Nutella. Yup, there's a ridiculous choice of toppings! Oh and I didn't tell you the best bit - if you're coeliac or avoiding gluten for health reasons, not only can they do your pizza base gluten free, Mama's also has beers to suit your disagreeable tummy! Pop in and try my favourite pizza - black pudding, calamari and pineapple!

Feta, green olives, cherry tomatoes - huge slices.

I had an enjoyable experience at Mamma's last night. The staff were really friendly and welcoming and it was a nice cosy atmosphere, with a mixture of locals and tourists. The pizza was very much just cheap, basic ingredients, which I unfortunately found somewhat lacking in flavour. The house red wine was quite nice though. And for beer lovers, they stock Barney's & Innis & Gunn. They do gluten free pizzas too, as well as some snack foods, sides, salads and a there are a couple of burgers on the menu. If you're on the Grassmarket and craving basic pizza or nachos etc, then Mamma's could be a good option, but I generally like something a bit different when dining out, so I don't think I will be returning.

Found this place along Grassmarket street. At first i was not hungry for pizza until I saw their intriguing sign that stated "how many inches can you handle" hook, line and sinker. Staff was great and very friendly. As for the food my basic girlfriend got the basic pepperoni pizza (may need to find a less basic bae). As for me, I ordered BBQ D2. The pepperoni pizza, for a lack of better words was... basic. The BBQ D2 packed a flavor punch. It had sausage with a hint taste of bbq flavor in the sauce. The prawns were pretty good sized enough for a good bite. The red peppers packed a kick but also had a tasty sweet after taste. We could only handle 9 inches of pizza each. And each about 7 pounds, i would say it was a good deal for a good meal.

Mamma's is a great Italian restaurant in the Grassmarket which always gives a delicious, value for money meal with friendly service. I've been here a few times with my friends over the past year and we've always enjoyed ourselves. It's famed locally for its pizzas, but it also offers a good range of other authentic Italian dishes like stone baked steak and lasagne. The meals are served in good, filling portions and I've never left Mamma's hungry, even after having just a main course. Pizzas, however, are their speciality and they offer a plethora of toppings, from spicy Italian sausage to haggis! On weekends it gets pretty busy and can feel a little tightly packed. Don't let this put you off as the food is more than worth it!

The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere, delicious food, and prompt, friendly service. Battered haddock: Easily the best fish & chips I've ever eaten, beating out places I've tried in both London and Australia. The batter was super crispy and non-greasy, the fish was thick and meaty, and the chips were cut to perfection. Mushy peas: not quite steamed peas, but not quite pea soup either. I liked them, though they felt a bit heavy for May and seem better suited for winter. Haggis: If you're sensitive to gamey flavors, run away from it. It was rich and deeply gamey, coated in a light batter. It came with homemade beetroot ketchup, apparently a UK staple, which complemented it nicely. Pickled onions: The only letdown of the meal. You just get two small, un-sliced onions that barely tasted pickled. All in all, definitely worth a visit if in Edinburgh.

It was super busy and full, but we were seated at a table in the corner rather quickly, and since we already knew what we wanted (vegan fish and chips for me, a veggie burger for my son), we ordered, and the food came relatively quickly. My son liked his burger, but the fish and chips? A total disappointment. The "fish" was clearly a premade option from the store, and it was so dense and hard that I could barely finish it. The chips were fine but no flavor so I needed to add salt. The plus was the vegan tartar, which tasted quite good. And of course, I added vinegar. But I was bummed that the ketchup and mayo was in little Heinz packets instead of bottles. This is so unnecessarily wasteful and also kind of a pain to constantly be opening and squeezing them. Our service was friendly and quick, so that's great, but everything else was pretty meh, and to be honest, I don't think I'd come back here.

Both times I've gone, I was greeted by the friendly staff who did a wonderful job keeping everything in order as it was quite busy. I usually don't opt for hot coffee, but as it was a cold and rainy day, I opted for what I believe was a brown sugar honey latte. For munching, I had the strawberry croissant. The coffee itself was very small in size, but it had great flavor. It was subtle, with the perfect amount of sweetness. The croissant was flaky and the layers of the dough filled crust were incredibly delicious. is it the best coffee I've ever had? Certainly not, but the service and the charm of the cafe make it all well worth It. It truly is a must try spot when visiting Edinburgh. The bakery is based on Rodney St, other side from the Marshmallow Lady. They have some seats inside (about 6 perhaps) so you can sit in and grab cake and coffee. The seating area was full when I visited and I wanted cake to take away. They had some cookies (60p each), brownies (£2.20 - £2.50 each) and a couple of cupcakes including red velvet (£2.50). I grabbed a white chocolate blondie and a red velvet to go. I was surprised at so many brownies available (normal, peanut butter, salted caramel, etc) as many gf people have brownie fatigue as thats traditionally the only cake we'd be offered. Service was friendly and helpful. There is a loyalty card - collect the stamps and after six, get a freebie. So, the taste test. I tried a bit of the blondie as I was wandering to Stockbridge. Very sweet, and I'm a sugar junkie so I was glad I only had a couple of little bites as I think the full thing would be too much. I was saving myself for the red velvet cupcake. It was disappointing which I hate to say as I love that places like this are popping up and catering to gf. I could see the top of the cupcake was cracked so I thought this might mean it was overbaked and it was :-( In the interests of research, I ate it all but it was consistently a bit hard throughout. I did like the icing, really good and not fake sweet like Bibi's had ended up. So, 3 stars. I wasn't wowed but I'd return once the hype has died down to see if the cupcakes are better.

We don't really dwell for hours in restaurants, so that note is not something we really needed, and after seeing it in the reservation confirmation, as well as being told twice by the host, there was a little bit of a feeling that the entire purpose of us being at Howie's was to get out as soon as possible so they can have the table back. Besides that tone-setter, the service and food were fantastic. Our server took a lot of time going through the options with us...she gave me a good perspective on the vegetarian haggis I was getting to help me contextualize its flavor and texture with the real thing, and was very nice! The asparagus and pea risotto I had was also beautiful and had good flavor. As a vegetarian, I appreciated that the menu had everything labeled with dietary restrictions.
