Been there for dinner and drinks a number of times, very good restaurant. Nice atmosphere, casual, slacks and button down. They have a limited menu, let's say 20 entrees but everything is done well and the menu does change. Nice variety of items. I've taken people from larger cities there for dinner and drinks and have not been disappointed. A little pricy for Brownsville but I will go back. We really enjoy this place. Probably best restaurant in Brownsville in terms of quality of food and ambiance. I especially enjoy the seafood dishes, although everything I've had is good. Good wine selection. Theiir maragaritas are good, too. Prices are what you would expect for a place like this in another other city. If some folks think it's expensive its probably because their idea of fine dinning is Chillis. Service is always good and food is delicious. Coffee is also really good. Highly recommend this place. My wife and I come here whenever we want to enjoy a nice dinning experience and feel like we are not in Brownsville given abundance of cheap, fast food in town. read more

This was a birthday splurge. So many positives...the service was really outstanding; the employees made us feel welcomed and our waiter was attentive and helpful but not intrusive. The cocktail i had, a "dirty" martini, was exactly what I had hoped for. The bread was fresh and irresistible. The scallops were tasty but had a slightly slippery mouth feel and was a little mushy of my taste. I would have like a more seared texture. It would have been nice if there was an actual serving of veggies with the scallops entree, and not just a few shred-like garnishes. It was a pricy smallish serving of smallish scallops. The chocolate cake was disappointing, not fresh tasting and dry. Very disappointed with that. My friends' had the creme brulee and were pleased. Importantly, the very loud pop music was upsetting. I love loud music but this was top 40 mainstream clear channel shopping mall music, like Adele, but far worse. I really hope that they either lower the volume substantially or figure out some quality music (World music, Spanish guitar would make sense.) Finally, the restaurant had a great view of a resaca but most of the blinds were pulled shut. Next time i will try the patio and hope there is no music is playing. All in all, I hope to try it again and maybe the scallops will be larger or more numerous and the dessert will be way better. read more

Madeira has instantly become one of my favorite restaurants. The plates are absolutely delicious, the portions are generous, and the menu has something to satisfy every palette. My favorites include the tapas and a tamarindo margarita to start, the Atun Con Costra De Pimienta to follow, and the crem brûlée or chocolate tiramisu style cake with a Carajillo to finish. Moreover, the ambiance and service is perfect. We could sit outside on the deck and enjoy the waterfront or inside surrounded by beautiful art, all while an amazing soundtrack played. Definitely need to go back, since the menu specials change frequently, and more of my favorites are to be discovered! read more

Arrived by plane from Houston. We wanted a wonderful meal and this did not disappoint. Great view, wonderful service, and delicious food. Beef Carpaccio to start, and Lobster in puff pastry. Came here for the first time because we were looking to try a new restaurant. Found it on Yelp and were excited to find a great place to dine. We were returning from the beach, so we were not dressed up. Dressed very casual with sandals on. We were sat right away by the hostess who asked us if we had a reservation (which we did not). Once we sat down, we did not get any menus. After about 10 minutes a waiter came by and asked what we would like to drink. Again, no food or drink menu provided. I asked for a list of drinks, and he brought the wine list. Okay, after we ordered the drinks, we waited for what seemed like forever to receive our drinks. But, still no food menu. The waiters were just standing around by the bar and did not provide us with a food menu or ever come back after delivering our drinks. I had to wave down another waiter to ask for a menu. I don't understand the logic of the waiters here. They were not busy. There may have been 7 tables with patrons. They obviously saw we did not have any menus on our table. We felt very uncomfortable, as though they did not want to serve us. Maybe it was because we were not dressed up, but for whatever reason, we thought it was horrible. So horrible, that we ended up leaving without ordering any food. They didn't ask why or even care that we were leaving. Horrible, horrible service. We would never return here. read more

I was very surprised to find a restaurant of this quality in Brownsville, TX. Madeira had a pleasant decor and atmosphere. The service was good despite the waiter being new and still a bit unfamiliar with the menu. The appetizer abalone in a citrus oil sauce was outstanding. The duck was well done as were most of the fish entrees (Salmon just a smidge overcooked). The triple layer chocolate mousse is one of the best desserts I have ever had. As others have complained, it is a little hard to find. It is directly behind the Holiday in Express along the same resaca (water way). Prices are in line with this type of restaurant. read more

It's a lovely upscale interior with a great location directly on the water. The dim lighting creates an intimate atmosphere inspire of the open dinning room. Service was was very well intended if not a few stubbles along the way. There was a lot of moving around flatware unnecessarily. The wine list is light on diversity and for a Spanish restaurant surprisingly few Spanish wines were represented. Bizarrely I don't think there is actually a Madeira on the menu. I ordered the fish ceviche to start and the tuna for my entree. The ceviche was an absolute delight. It took me back to a magical week in Baja where I ate the most delicious ceviche at a beach shack everyday for a week. The tuna was a miss order on my part. To the cook's credit it was perfectly prepared however the preparation left much to be desired. It was completely crusted in pepper to the point that it overwhelmed instead of adding to the preparation. It was served with a lovely salad of butter lettuce and spinach with a few sun dried tomatoes and some crispy things of dubious origin. A balsamic reduction pulled it all together. Amazing new place in Brownsville, worth the drive from SPI......went with some friends who live there, the building itself is gorgeous! Elegant, and simple, yes, limited menu, but everything was outstanding! Recommend the Madeira Ceviche with mango, and Pear Tart for dessert, gourmet dining 20 mins from the beach is great, since a lot of the good places have closed on the Island (Wild Fork :( ) this is a great option, highly recommended! read more

Excellent Restaurant for the Valley. Went there last night with my Wife for Anniversary celebration. The settIng is beautiful. Menu options different and high class cuisine. Started off with a couple of Mojitos. Excellent. Scallops with Parmesan looked good but the strength of the Parmesan flavor killed the scallop. Wouldn't order it again but that's just our taste preference. Wife had Salmon w/ Capers. They did ask her if she wanted the Salmon fully cooked or 3/4's, which was great. She went with 3/4's and it was just Perfectly cooked. I went with the NZ Lamb medium. It was very good. But not the greatest I've had. The asparagus that came with it though was among the best I've had. Decided to not have dessert but rather a couple of Capuccinos from Nespresso. Having Nespresso coffee is a high quality trademark. Just sorry we didn't get the usual froth we make with our Nespresso at home. Service was absolutely friendly and professional. Pricey? Of course. Never understand reviews from people who want to go out for Fine Dinning and complain about the prices. Few suggestions for management 1) Chairs need filling. They could be more comfy. 2) Better choice of music. There is way too much nice ambient music out there to be listening to high pitch voices while having dinner. 3) Don't think having the bartender go out to the tables and shake the mixing tin for a minute each time somebody ordered a cocktail drink honored the level of classy restaurant that Madeira is. 4) Train the waiters to get that froth right from their Nespresso machine. The restaurant is a lovely setting where we get an excellent meal every time we go. Made a reservation for Valentine's Day but we were not told it was a Fixed Price menu. Found out after we were at the table that it was $80.00 a person for a three course meal not including gratuity! Food was good, not the normal excellent and the service was horrible. Will not go again on a special night but will continue to go for regular dinners. read more

It's located behind a cluster of buildings with medical offices and the sign was three feet from the ground and hard to see. Food should inspire emotion - this place only inspires a strong desire to want to meet the chef and ask, "Are you having a bad day?" I have hope for the valley food scene, especially Brownsville. The place has a nice modern elegant style, with a nice view to the resaca and cobbleheads. I ordered chateaubriand cooked medium -accompanied with a merlot. The plate itself looked decent; I think it might have needed something else besides the asparagus. For this kind of meat and I guess added the investment from the restaurant the price is actually a little decent compared to upscale restaurants outside the valley. Afterwards I ordered the cajeta gelatin with coffee which wasn't too sweet and just enough to feel right and satisfied. In the end the bill came a little higher than $70 for 2 persons, and I don't think I'l be going back anytime soon. That doesn't mean it's a bad restaurant, you would have to check it out for yourself. Comparing this to other "upscale restaurants" outside the valley I would rate this place at a 3.0/5.0. I think they need to add a little more to the menus and their dishes. read more

This is probably the best restaurant south of San Antonio. I have not eaten at any restaurants in McAllen or Corpus Christi that are as good. I have eaten at Madeira several times beginning in October of 2011 and had a different entre each time. It has the best chateaubriand for two I have ever eaten (on several different occasions, it never varied and was cooked perfectly). The Chilean sea bass (3 different preparations are available) was excellent as were the very large seared scallops. The appetizers are great, although rather than the pate-like foie gras, I was expecting seared foie gras with a sauce, However, it was still delicious, and I have ordered it on two different occasions. The lobser stuffed filo is also great. The desserts are limited, but the Chocolate Mousse Cake and the Creme Brule are both good. The wine list could use some medium priced additions in both the whites and reds, but at least there are some labels that I recognized at about two to two and one half times retail which is better than the wine lists in the cities. The food compares very favorably to upscale big city restaurants--Dallas, Houston, Austin-- (as do the prices, but you get what you pay for). Each time I was there I thought the service was excellent. read more
