My first experience at Maderas was about 3 years ago. After the first time I played there I thought the course was really nice but I encountered some pretty arrogant Staff in the clubhouse. A buddy of mine did not show up and they still charged me for his round, they at least gave me course credit, but they still added players to our group so we had a full foursome for that time anyway so no reason to charge me what I feel is a slightly overpriced rate anyway. Anyway, I was reluctant to play there again. I ended up playing there last weekend and it seems they have turned things around a lot in the club house. The course used to have a pretty snobby feel and culture but during my experience last week I did not encounter that at all. I had a great time and the course was in great shape. I would call this course challenging, not a lot of room to miss off the tee, and with the roughs shaved down and un-watered even with a good shot you can roll off. The greens were beautiful and rolling very nice. The scenery is as always beautiful. The pace of play was perfect. Much better experience this time! read more

We had our wedding at Maderas and absolutely LOVED it. They had great packages that they let you edit to exactly what you want and helped with all the details. Not to mention the food was amazing, especially for a 200+ person event. Laura and the staff were amazing. Although my husband and I don't golf, Maderas is our go-to place when entertaining out of town company and when we want to relax and get a way from it all. Looking at the beautiful hillsides and elegant architecture, it's easy to image that we are miles away from everything. This review is concerning their Easter Brunch. They have a very good selection of food for easter and I particularly like eating outside if the weather is nice. I have been there when the weather is cold and had to eat inside. They have many different choices in food selection. I really like the omelets that you can have custom made to what you want. They also have an extensive choice for desserts as well. The view of the golf course is beautiful as well when eating outside. read more

Just did a golf tournament here this past Friday at Maderas. My company paid a pretty penny to sponsor a hole. My coworker and I arrived on time and checked in. We started to unload our stuff and decided not to call the staff over for a ride till we were finished unloading because we didn't want them waiting on us. Sure enough a Maderas employee pulls up without asking them and starts to get "annoyed" because we weren't finished or ready to go. So we rushed to get everything out of the van. Then we were asked rudely "how much more stuff do you have?" Keep in mind we sponsored a hole so a shade, 2 chairs, 1 table, 3 boxes of giveaways, and a cooler seemed like an inconvenience. We get to the hole and set up with about 20 mins till it started. They left a cart at the hole so we started to drive down to the clubhouse when we were flagged over. The manager along with another employee went to get the cart from us but we said we needed to use the restroom and order food before the tournament. FIRST I asked if there were restrooms scattered throughout the course and he said (with a chuckle) No! (That's odd for a high end bigger course) SECOND then we asked if we can order food from the restaurant and have it delivered ( just to the 2nd hole- not far!) and he said with attitude "No we don't do that here." (Can I say again odd for a high end course)Okay...we basically asked "ok what do we do then?" The guy said "order from the snack bar or cart attendant because it's fast and use the clubhouse facilities." The manager then rushed us back to the clubhouse and waited for us to hurry and do everything. Ugg! Then the nerve of this guy told us "we were starting to give him the impression we were high maintenance!" He said afterwards he was just teasing but with his tone said otherwise-RUDE! We get our overpriced $85 lunch (2sandwiches, 2 drinks, 2 cokes, and 1 pack of jerky) and get back to the hole. It was a Beautiful day, beautiful course, and they had a nice waterfall. The beverage cart attendant (who we saw once and thank goodness we didn't rely on her for food or drink and who I thought was a sweet girl) never came back after that and I even asked her too! Geez I just can't catch a break here! The Tournament ended and they sent this guy to collect us and our stuff. We were struggling to get our shade down and he literally just sat there watching when he realized that he can't go anywhere till we were packed up and squared away. So he shouts to us "are you just about done yet?" And at this point we were loosing patient with the horrible staff so we said "our shade is stuck - so NO!" With a huff and puff he got up and finally helped. Then we carried everything down to the bottom of the hole when he said "oh I ran out of gas." WTHECK?!?! So without calling another course employee to help he asked if WE can push the cart to the top of the hill and he will coast down. OMGosh I was so shocked that this was even happening! So my partner (in a skirt) ended up running up the hill and pushed the dang cart to get him out of there! The guy comes back with a gas can (shouldn't he have filled up then come get us?) and then he watched us two ladies pack up the club cart. We then had to ask him to help us with the cooler after he watched us struggle. We get to the van and same thing: watched us unloaded all of our stuff and asked him to help with the cooler again. Then before we left the manager who insulted us earlier, said " well if it isn't my favorite ladies!" (Didn't appreciate the sarcasm and ok jerk we get it you can't stand us!) We really felt like we were treated as an inconvenience instead of a guest. It was horrible. It's to bad because the course was gorgeous but the staff was NOT up to PAR. I've done so many events and by far this had the worst staff ever. This location for San Diego is an extremely nice area and surrounded by 15 million dollar homes and this is how customers get treated? Not saying other courses aren't friendly because of their location, but for the prices they charge here and the type of golf course they supposedly are-I was not impressed what so ever and will NEVER return! read more

Our experience with Maderas in planning our wedding was OUTSTANDING because of Katy Arrington (Wedding/Sales Coordinator). We visited and were in contact with several wedding venues prior to booking Maderas, and no one compares to the quality and customer service that Katy provided to us in what was almost one year of communication. Unlike other venues, Katy ALWAYS got back to me with my emails (and there were many), generally within 24 hours and I never worried about WHAT IFS. Day of, everything was perfect. The customer service from the entire staff including the banquet Captain, Caitlin was superb, and most of our guests commented on the staffs' customer service. It was also wonderful to hear from a couple of vendors that have worked with Maderas for years that Katy, by far has exceeded expectations. Thank you Maderas! read more

I was informed by a GM at another Troon Golf facility, that while our family was vacationing in the San Diego area, we had to give Maderas Golf Club a try. Wow! was he right. From the moment we pulled into the parking lot, Bill O'Brien and his team treated us as if we had been coming out there for years. What a great experience. An experience that I have come to expect from any Troon managed property and they did not disappoint. The course and layout was fantastic. One of those courses that you could play everyday and never get tired of taking in a new view, or find a better way to navigate a hole. Although very challenging from the back tees, the course was also very playable for the other three in my group including two ladies . After a good round of golf, it is always nice to reminisce about the round over a bite and/or drink from the club's restaurant. We were fortunate enough to be there on a Wednesday night when The Grille puts on their burger buffet. Awesome!!! Every sort of trimming you could imagine was available for that Kobe beef burger along with plenty of other options to choose from. The kids loved the live music while the grownups enjoyed that So Cal sunset on the patio. We will definitely be going back to Maderas Golf Club the next time we make it to the San Diego area. read more

We got married at Maderas Golf Club in November. It was a dream venue. We had looked downtown and other places and were disappointed by the little customer service and personal touch you got for a pricey cost. But, at Maderas, we were treated with the red carpet service. Katy, the event planner, and Michael, the general manager were wonderful. Not only was the planning in preparation smooth and the day of everything we could have ever wanted, but we consider Katy and Michael personal friends. The venue is beautiful especially at dusk. Our cocktail reception began just as the sun was setting and the outdoor setting was spectacular (so guests say... we were taking pictures). And, the indoor private room was great. Our guests said the food was excellent too. I would recommend Maderas as a wedding site without hesitation. read more

I haven't played Maderas in a while and thought it'd be a good time to get back out to it. I wish I hadn't. In fairness, the course itself is in good shape, with fairways well manicured and greens well maintained. The staff was suitably friendly and helpful from the moment bags were dropped. Kudos to the pro shop and grounds staff for their abilities. The problem is in the course itself. I'm a decent golfer, 12-handicapper who plays the blue tees and can navigate driver, irons and putter around a course. The layout at Maderas, however, is unreasonably punitive in the narrow landing areas off many of the tees, and the hazards to the left right and short are often deep brush or overgrown wooded areas that vacuum and lose golf balls at an alarming rate. The greens are hilly, misshapen and try too hard to overtly challenge the player, and flag placement on some of the greens seemed a bit ridiculous. Add to the mix groups of loud, slow and/or inconsiderate players, and it really makes one wonder how the fairly expensive greens' fees attract such a crowd. I've read from some posters that Maderas is "better than the South Course (of Torrey Pines)." Not by a long shot. While more expensive and nearly possible to get on, the South Course provides long, challenging, mixed elevation holes with tree, canyon and landscape obstacles that, while very difficult, offer the player many more chances to correct an errant shot. Yes, some shots are lost, but this course and other proper courses in SD at least offer areas left or right that provide reasonable safety from lost balls. That is how golf is intended to be played, not as an exercise in laser guided shots but as a continuum of shots, good and bad, that lead to a score. The greens of Torrey South are nuanced and visually deceptive without resorting to miniature-golf flavored designs. Public courses being what they are, and the level of class in decorum of public golfers declining as it is, perhaps I cannot say that the Maderas golfer is much different to what one typically finds during a round at Torrey or at a number of other similarly priced venues. I will not return to Maderas. For similar money, Aviara is easily as well maintained and service oriented, but provides for more of the positive attributes described above. La Costa as well. The list goes on. read more

This club does it right. Everything is meticulously detailed to the point of excellence. Not a good course for beginners with the abundance of slopey terrain that is unavoidable. Bring a lot of extra golf balls if you cannot consistently hit the ball straight. read more

Amazing course. Well maintained and manicured. Great vistas. Greens were terrific. I appreciated that the fairways had been recently verticut which means that the owners are investing in the course...rare for a public course. I appreciated the attentive and hospitable golf pros - Justin and Travis. Valets greet at the bag drop and are waiting with a cool towel when you finish. I recently played Maderas and had a wonderful time. It is a great golf course and well worth the cost for the experience. But I was compelled to write this review to let everyone know about the great customer service there. I mistakenly left my $300 rangefinder in the golf cart and didn't realize it until four days later after I got home to Austin, TX. I called the course on a whim hoping it was turned in and indeed it was there! The clubhouse pro offered to mail it back to me at no cost! I was so happy to play there but even more happy to experience the great customer service. Thank you Maderas!!! read more

We had our wedding ceremony and reception at Maderas Golf Club in October and had the most wonderful experience from start to finish. The grounds themselves are absolutely gorgeous. Just driving into the place made me fall in love with the location. Susan was our contact for the wedding and couldn't have been any more attentive and friendly. She was very detail oriented and worked with us to modify the package to our liking. Over the 9 month before the wedding, she was quick to respond and helpful answering any questions I had. The food was incredibly good... much better than run of the mill wedding food. I have friends who are still talking about the au gratin potatoes from one of the dishes! I wholeheartedly recommend Maderas as a wedding venue! read more

I think this place is over rated. I dont mind spending money on fees but the condition was not top drawer. I dont think service was top drawer either. Certainly enjoyable but for $150 you could play Torrey or Aviara (later in the day). read more

My son just had his wedding at Maderas Golf Course. I just wanted to share this San Diego/Poway hidden secret. The venue is just gorgeous, green rolling hills, live oaks, beautiful golf course/clubhouse/restaurant/banquet hall. The photos from the wedding came out unbelievable. But, what I wanted to really emphasize is the service that we experienced. The wedding was in August (it never rains in August) but, we got this weird weather thing and it pretty much rained off and on all day. The staff kept in touch with us, offering an alternate (indoor) location for the wedding to be held in case it rained (which it did). They had it all set up but when the bride insisted at the last minute that the wedding be held outside (rain or shine). They quickly figured out a way to move everything back outdoors, wiped the seats off and the wedding was just spectacular! Then, they immediately set up the indoor location for a cocktail reception in a matter of 20 minutes. I can't imagine any other wedding venue more highly than Maderas! They really take care of you and see that every detail is taken care of. read more

BY far the nicest place i have ever played. I took my best friend out for his birthday and had a great round, even better for him, on the ninth hole 301 yard par 4 he got his first hole in one!!!! The starter (Ken) saw the whole thing and quickly came to congratulate him. The course was well kept and the staff is extremely friendly. I recommend picking up a course book in the Pro-Shop if you are new to the course or haven't played in awhile. The practice green rolls significantly faster than the back nine. read more

It is the best course in San Diego county! It is tough and expensive but it is a great track. Save your pennies and have some fun. :-)

After playing Aviara and Torrey pines, my expectations were off the chart and Maderas, to me, did not meet my unrealistic expectations. But this is a fine track with a challenging layout, good conditions, and good service. Pace was slow when I played and I think that was due to the difficulty of the course, but everyone I met, including the players, were nice. As an out of towner, it is not a must play for me, but I highly recommend this course if you have extra time. read more

We had a beautiful outdoor wedding at Maderas Golf Club in August 2010. We looked at a lot of venues before we found Maderas. It was the only venue that did not charge us an arm and a leg for site fee. I don't like how other places charge for every single thing just cuz. it's a wedding. We chose Maderas over another venue, not only cuz. Maderas had breathtaking views and reasonable prices but Susan, the Special Events Manager was absolutely great! She was flexible, patient and accommodating in every way. She worked within our budget which was very important to us and offered great suggestions to save us money. She was prompt in getting back to us and genuinely worked with our interest in mind. Most wedding packages came with taste testing and I would highly recommend that cuz. everyone have different tastes and preferences...especially when we were very particular and picky about the food. At the end of the night, we were happy with how everything turned out. The food was declicious, service was attentive and the tables were beautifully set up. We had dinner on the terrace overlooking the golf course while the sun set, emiting a beautiful glow. I would highly recommend Maderas for anyone looking for a wedding venue. Perhaps the most overrated golf course I have ever played. Our foursome plays a lot of golf at high end, highly rated courses, so once we saw this course and the reviews we had to give it a try. I don't know where these other posters are playing but they have definitely over hyped this track Course layout is nice enough, but that is where the precipitous drop off begins. Went off at 8 a.m., in FRONT of a scramble tournament. By the 5th hole we were stuck for the next 4 hours waiting on every shot, on every hole behind the SCRAMBLE---try figuring that one out. Course marshals roamed around assuring us the pace of play would pick up---never happened. Once we complained about the delays the friendly marshals avoided us to the end. The greens were ridiculous---at least 3 different types of grass growing on all 18 holes. The greens were the quality of the lowest end muni course that had been neglected for months, to the point that we could actually see a bloom on the grass ends. By far the worst we have played in many years. Next disappointment was where they had the tee markers.....all were moved way up to the white tees and even closer. We were glad to get off this dog track after 5+ hours and $840 in green fees. If you read this post and still decide to give this quilt patched track a try, shame on you. We did have a very nice lunch in the club house and it only came to $130. Overall, for this type of money, you deserve better---much better, and you can get it just about anywhere for 1/5 of the cost. read more

Just played today and if you are looking for the complete golf experience, you HAVE to play Maderas. The club is warm and inviting and the staff are fantastic. We were met at the club drop with smiling faces and the service folks were eager to help. They loaded our bags and directed us to the golf shop where we were welcomed again! The golf shop had every item you would need so we looked for a few hats and shirts. Once we checked in, the outside staff directed us to the practice range where we were able to warm up before our round. The range attendant gave us some local advice and took a real interest in making sure we had everything we needed. The next 4 hours were one postcard image after another! We played from the tees that the starter recommended and it set us up for a great round. Afterwards, we had a drink in the clubhouse and watched the end of the PGA Championship. The perfect end to a perfect day on the links. If you are in San Deigo...Maderas is MUST PLAY! Well done. read more
