Do the employees here not want to greet or help customers? I walked in the other day and the girl who was working there turned around and saw I had walked in and was looking at a jacket, she didn't bother to say hello or ask if I needed any help, which I did, but since it already felt like she didn't want to help since she didn't care to acknowledge me at all, I ended up leaving. I had such a great experience at this Madewell! The gentleman by the fitting rooms and the woman at the register both made my experience yesterday, 13 May, amazing! The gentleman at the fitting room helped me figure out what jeans were for me as it was my first time purchasing jeans from Madewell, and when I was unhappy with the fit of the first two (standard sizing and petite sizing), he recommended the curvy fit which is definitely the best fitting jeans I've had in a long time! Checking out was a breeze, as the woman at the front was so nice, and despite the line behind me, she took her time to walk me through signing up for their loyalty program. I am a huge fan of Madewell; this particular location, especially, because of ALICE! She is the most helpful and the most sweetest SA here, and she went out of her way in finding a particular dress I was looking for. A girl who worked there gave me a pair of jeans to try on, but when I asked another worker what she thought she and told me they weren't made for people who hold weight in their middle, so that's why they didn't look good. I have never had such a problem at any other Madewell. read more

I'm SO glad Madewell now has an online storefront. This is the worst retail customer service I've ever experienced. As many times as I've walked into this store, I've never received a smile, greeting or offer for help. I've walked in with plans to buy specific items several times, and have walked out disgusted and annoyed instead. The younger, hipster sister to J.Crew Madewell stands as a cross between the refined styling of its older sister store and a much more put together American Eagle/Abercrombie. If you're looking for one of this year's "it" accessories - the scarf - look no further than Madewell. The walls of the shop are lined with every color of scarf imaginable, and more season-based prints are curled here and there on shelves throughout the store. It's almost as if they chose to save on decorating the store by the copious amounts of scarves. There's a lot to draw one in at Madewell, especially for perennial casual dressers like me - I mean, the fact that I can buy not only scarves but basic t-shirts (short and longsleeved), in style long sweaters, and various tunic and bubble dresses in any color imaginable means that I'm an instant fan (though I tend to stick to a few basic colors, I'm the kind of girl who relishes being able to buy a favorite sweater in multiples of the same color). There's even a now-familiar denim bar where you can find jeans that are "you" in a myriad of washes and cuts. (Ironic moment, looking at a pair of slip on canvas shoes and noticing the juxtaposition of "made in China" as I stood in a store named "made well") What, then, sets Madewell apart from American Apparel, Gap, or the aforementioned American Eagle/Abercrombie? I'm hard-pressed to tell you - styling? minute differences in store design? parent company? It certainly isn't the pricing - J.Crew's CEO touts Madewell as an "affordable" brand but, barring the $20-30 tees, the sweaters and jeans have a price point of $60, 80, 100 and up, making me wonder why I would really want to buy such basics here as opposed to elsewhere. The all-female staff was friendly in initial greeting but not particularly concerned with follow-up assistance even in a near-empty store. I was happy to browse through and a little excited to find a cache of Hunter boots in the back (not merchandised elsewhere in the store, just rows of boxes neatly tucked under rods of sweaters) as I'm hoping to buy a pair soon but haven't spied them in person before. I pretty much can only shop at Madewell when I'm with my mom and she offers to buy me things (the average cost of any one piece of clothing is probably around $90). That being--embarrassingly--said, the quality of the clothes is excellent. I think I've only ever had to toss/donate one item of clothing from here and it was because my personal style changed--not because the clothes started looking old or falling apart. I also always want to buy everything in the store. The clothes are always very trendy and with the times. The girls who work there are always look gorgeous and are styled in such a way that you want to buy everything they are wearing. The main reason I'm posting this review is because I was shocked that Tysons' Madewell had so many reviews reflecting poor customer service. I've been going to this store since it opened and have always noticed that the staff are especially friendly, helpful, and competent. I'm always approached by at least one staff member asking if they can help me find a size or start a fitting room. In my opinion this store has the best customer service at Tysons. read more

Hopefully one day they'll accept JCrew credit cards (hint hint). I usually go to this store (and one in Montgomery Mall) to view/touch the fabrics then go online to make my purchases since they tend to have more of a selection on the web. The normal buys are layerable pieces or cardies. Madewell to me is like a tomboy version of Anthropologie which suits me just fine. Since the Rockville location of Anthro closed a while ago I find myself lurking in this chain's locations. They offer good pieces for the casual Fridays at work and the weekends. I'm not sure what to say about the service since that's the topic of concern for most yelpers. My mission is to cop a few feels and stealth out but I have to say they always walk by to say hello - maybe I'm touchin' too much or I'm in there too often :p But I definitely favor their website. read more

Madewell is a great store for people graduating from Urban Outfitters and yet, don't want to make the full leap to J. Crew. Lucky for those gals there's Madewell. I've been a big-time fan of MW for awhile now (my wallet? not to so much) and they're constantly stepping their game up. The store is thoughtfully merchandised and is always neat and tidy, making for a good shopping experience (versus rummaging through sale bins and racks). The only downer, as a few other Yelpers have noted, is the customer service. There have been days that I've visited MW after work in my boring work attire and don't look like a Madewell gal and MW clerks have skipped over even saying hello to me. If you look done up and that you could drop a couple hundred dollars, the service is usually phenomenal. Generally, very fake to your face, but phenomenal nonetheless. Now, here's the precursor I'll give you: I've worked in retail myself (about 8 years to be exact) and was always taught to give good customer service, no matter what the customer looks like. Could it be a dude who's ready to drop $$$, with a birthday wishlist for his sister? Or a mom shopping for her teenage daughters? Or a frumpy gal looking to make the wardrobe upgrade? In either case, all three people may not be the typical MW shopper but those MW gals need to mindful of potential sales they could make, not who they think will make a sale. If this scares you off, you might want to check out Madewell's online store- there are sales that aren't always in the store (they don't match prices from online to inside in the store!) and they generally have deals on shipping. read more

I had just about the worst customer experience at this Madewell. I decided to get a top when the cashier decided to inspect my ID for the longest time ever. i've been shopping at Madewell since high school and im well in their loyalty program. The cashier then told me total, which didn't add up to what i thought it would be and then she proceeded to say, "oh it's tax." The math did not make sense. The shirt was not ringing up to the total of the discount on the tag and then she told me, "oh, this shirt actually isn't supposed to be on sale" and proceeded to tear the price off the ticket and asked if i still wanted it. Through all of this, i just felt this encounter was obvious she was not even going to try and i was fed up. I just left and when i looked it up online, it was on sale. read more

I'm happy that this store is in our area...it's only in a few spots I believe. Yes, I am one of those people that covets trendy scarves and as Julie H. pointed out they opted to decorate this place with scarves. They are pricier than some other places, but scarves are usually my only accessory and liven up my jeans and white tee. Whenever I go to Tysons I make a point to pop in here to check out the sale section which is affordable. I got a couple of long cardigans for $20 and a pair of cords for $35. We love Madewell products a lot and like it since it is from JCrew line. But the customer service and handling in this TYSONS store sucks the staff and mean and so difficult to deal with. Looks like they hate their job. I dealt with a lady called Lauren she is thoroughly unprofessional, obnoxious and rude. I had some difficult with an order and the manager never called. Lauren also was of no help and rescinded on her words ! I give this one star due to the complete lack of empathy and customer service in this location ! read more

So, this is J. Crew's bohemian little sister. I would describe it as a combination of Anthropologie, Lucky Brand, Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, and yes: J. Crew. The prints are gorgeous and artsy. The fabrics are luxuriously soft. The shoes are Italian-made and, based on the pair of ever-versatile Suede Sunset Sandals I just bought, sooo comfy and chic. The tops tend towards a relaxed and flattering fit, and their style is way more worn in and laid back than sexy and flashy, but I like that. I also love the 15% student discount, the chic store set-up, and the friendly (but albeit, pushy) sales girls. So why not five stars? -At full price, all their stuff is a complete rip-off (but that's why I stick to the sales rack!) -In some of the thinner tops, the quality is inconsistent. I've bought really durable tees, as well as ones that went through the washer once and came out with tiny holes. They're cool about exchanging or store credit when that happens, though. -Their sizing is not petite-friendly. You know sizing needs to be scaled down when a 5'1, 105 lbs girl gets lost in an XS tee. For real. Oddly, their jeans are so tight that I have to go 2-3 sizes up for them to fit right! Their sale prices are just OK. No super-steals here, but the clothes are so cute that I'm willing to pay up. $20 blouses and skirts, $40-50 shoes, $20-60 sweaters. But this is really cute, comfy stuff that I find myself wearing often, so I don't mind not being a cheapskate and shopping here every once in a while :) read more

Lemme start, I love Madewell! Totally my style. Sophisticated with a mix of boho chic & downtown...perfect. But this store has its ups and downs. I hate the customer service. They don't greet you and when they do you know it is because they have too... But other than that I love the clothes , the jeans especially! Even though they are pricey, the sales rack has quite a selection. Many items have superb quality and feel so soft, but many $50+ tops are just not worth the price! What was neat was that I saw the girl (Abigail Breslin) from Little Miss Sunshine shopping there! Wow! The service in this store is terrible. I'm not the kind of customer who needs to be greeted or followed around the store, but when I have a question I would like to ask it and not feel like I am being bothersome. I would also like a hello, especially if people who are coming in after me are. I had to ask for a fitting room. I wasn't a fan of anything I tried on but I did find the cutest ring, as I'm walking by the cash wrap the girl behind it says in a very sassy tone "just the ring?" I said no I still wanted to look. I found some earrings and a scarf. I go back up to the cash wrap, but the items down that I would like to get. I let her know I have a coupon that I would like to use. She rings up my items, and then reads the coupon. She scans the coupon and then I get the same sassy voice and she says "you want a bag?" I say yes and I'm thinking Ummmm I just bought three small items yes I want a bag. I'll just shop online read more

The employees there are extremely helpful and friendly. Alice is great and was able to put in an order on a dress for me OVER THE PHONE from the Madewell website. The other employees are great too. It is a smaller stores compared to others but the employees there are way better than the other stores I have been to. read more
