Cute little shop in the heart of Soho! I was visiting from SF and was told to visit this place. Super cute! They have a GREAT selection of jeans and a few that were on a great sale! The people are very friendly and helpful when trying things on and finding something that fits just right for your body-type! Madewell has absolutely stellar customer service. I went to the Soho store and they didn't have this certain pair of combat boots in my size, they called another location and were able to have them sent to me free of shipping costs. About two months into wearing my favorite combat boots, one of the shoelaces broke and I wasn't sure where I could get similiar ones since they are so unique. So I emailed madewell.com customer service and they were able to look up all my information and sent me two new shoe laces for my combat boots. heard this place is owned by JCrew. I walked by late at night and HAD to go back when it was open. It's nice in that it appeals to a few different looks. It's part-euro, part-artsy, part-hipster, part-care-free with a hint (just enough) of preppy-ness. And it was fun reading their "Living in Silverlake" book because I know the area! It also had a community feel to it ..on the 2nd floor, there was a little b-board where people posted notes. read more

Great basics with a unique and hip twist -- that is Madewell in a nutshell. Less preppy than JCrew and more approachable, but just as pricey. I was pleasantly surprised at the sale section though, great tees with satin trims, a silk vest with sweet pockets and pulls, basic v-necks that were a perfect fit - what's not to love, or at least really like about this brand? The sales associates were nice and the store was busy, but not to the point of crowded on a Saturday night. I will definitely visit Madewell again ... and hopefully the next time will be when it comes to SF. read more

I can't afford any regular price from this store, but I still get emails when they have any promotional discounts. Went CRAZY shopping during holiday season when they were having a HUGE sale, it's like giving it away or prices were almost as like buying from Forever 21 (or cheaper). Most of their clothes are pretty simple, casual chick, very colorful, stylish. They have a large selection of jeans but i'm not a big fanatic about them. I have a average women's body and most of their clothes are mostly made to fit for skinny people. I love to mix and match with other brands, can't stick with only one of them. So I heart the tops, sweaters but not into their bottoms. read more

I should probably start off by confessing that Madewell has become my favorite clothing store, so my review may be a bit biased. This store in particular, however, has Lindsay, who is the most amiable and helpful stylist I've been fortunate enough to meet among all of the Madewell stores I've been to. Yes, most (if not, all) of the sales associates/stylists I've met at this store (and others) have been helpful and welcoming. Lindsay treated my mom and me like we were in a private styling session. She gave me great tips and welcomed any questions on styles, sizing, etc. with enthusiasm and without coming off as trying to make a sale. She has a great sense of style and knows the Madewell catalog well enough to be able to compile any great outfit together (which probably isn't terribly hard to do because they have such great options!). And although she has another full time job, she enjoys working at Madewell part-time because she had a passion for styling, which is an important quality in a sales associate/stylist. She also gave me a card with her info, inviting me to keep in touch with her about future styling needs. Although I don't live in NY, I would be open to coordinate a styling session with her and her team with my friends the next time I'm in town. Thanks a bunch for your help on my shopping spree with my mom. I would wish she moved to LA, but that would hurt my wallet way too much! read more

I was surprised to find out that this store was owned by J Crew. It was definitely more laid back. I love their materials used to make their t-shirts. It was like the fashion forward sense of American Apparel + the comfy laid-back nature of James Perse + resort style = Madewell. Its one of my favorite stores in NY now. I've been here twice and I purchased items that I absolutely adore. I really like the design of the store - it is definitely reminiscent of going to a beach resort store but without the tacky island t-shirts and smell of sunblock. Minus a star for not having complimentary alteration services and for not having the cute t-shirt that I purchased the first time I stepped in here. read more

Got a few pieces from the Alexa Chung for Madewell collection. They have a great range of trendy basics! I don't know how else to describe it.. nothing is overly designed- they have good colors and cuts in their clothes and seem like decent quality. Nothing is like too trendy or too basic. I love how the store is designed and I experienced really good customer service here. I am happy to hear that they recently opened one up in SF. Can't wait to try it out and I hope it maintains the same quality as the NY shop! read more

This store has cute clothes, for sure. But good lord....I have never been in such a chaotic spot in my life! The noise, the thronging hipsters, the long, wending lines for the fitting rooms.... Its a miracle that the salesgirls can manage to be so good natured and helpful - but they are! Despite the unsettling feeling of being under assault the whole time I was there, I still happily ponied up at the cash register. I was wandering around the city on Easter Sunday and decided to check this place out. I'm a huge fan of Madewell, and I just wanted to try some shoes on, as I had nothing better to do... I'd been intimidated by the Madewell stores for so long because they looked "posh" and I always assumed that the staff in any posh stores would be intimidating people. This is the best Madewell store that I'd been in! I mean, considering that it's in SoHo, the staff here are really really nice! I'm not saying that New Yorkers are all mean and/or intimidating, but one is persuaded by media to think so... I tried on all the shoes that I'd ever wanted and would have walked out without buying anything, except the belts were on sale... I just had to get one. The one I got was originally priced at $42, but I got it for $12.99! I wanted a leather key chain too, but I opted for the belt instead. The dressing stalls looked pretty organized, and the staff here are not only super friendly but super hard-working. I was looking at the iphone cases that were on sale right where the staircase was, and I dropped one off the table, and one of the girls there and I looked up and down the stairs for it. That was nice of her... but maybe don't have the sales table where things could fall off the second floor? I liked they're sales section- very well organized for a really tiny & crowded store. I should preface this review by saying that I quite like J.Crew and their clothing is very much my style. The only caveat is that I often cannot afford the whole J.Crew style. During my visit to NYC, I made it a top priority to visit Madewell, because although they have an online store, I wanted to see the clothing in person. I wanted to touch the clothing, see what the fit was like, etc. I was not disappointed. Plus, the clothing was a tad bit more fresher and spunkier than J.Crew, which I liked because it didn't scream out "total prep", but "somewhat prep". The prices were also much more agreeable for me and once I found the sale rack (score!), I was very happy. Overall, I bought three great tops/cardigans that are of nice quality and didn't break to bank. Now, I can shop their online store with (more) confidence. read more

I'm a guy so maybe my opinion doesn't matter as much. But, I love the look. It's not quite as preppy as J. Crew and much more appropriate for a younger crowd especially now as J. Had the worst customer service experience ever! That day I happened to be in Soho so I thought why not stop by to get the specific pair of shoes I've been eyeing online and save myself the shipping wait. Normally, I shop at the Madewell located at the Upper East location where the staff is helpful and friendly. I assumed my experience would've been the same. However, the sale associate that "helped" me was inattentive and frankly didn't give a shit. I asked her for a pair of shoes in my size and she never came back. Instead I saw her asking other customers if they needed help. I approached her again and asked where were my shoes? And she said they didnt have my size. So I asked her for another pair. She did come back this time after I waited another ten minutes but with the WRONG shoe. She went back again to get the right shoe but now it was in the WRONG size. Are you serious? I immediately got up and left. I'm normally not the one to complain when it comes to customer service (and even sympathize with other sales associates) since I do work in a high end commission retail environment myself but a thirty min wait to walk out empty handed is disappointing. read more

At first I was really pissed to hear that the Madewell clothing company ("Established in 1937") was owned by J. Crew (they bought the name from the original owners). I had heard the clothes were kinda cheap looking but I decided to take a look for myself. I was a little bit peeved to find that I liked--no loved--a ton of the stuff there. The end of the season sales right before and after Christmas saw the markdown of items to almost half off, which was AWESOME. The quality of the clothing is good, and the selection of accessories is cool, with hooded scarfs, scarf tubes, and big chunky stripes. I'm a little embarrassed going inside the store now since about half of the girls that work there now recognize me on sight. I can't wait until their official store (near Broome) opens. The more Madewell, the better! Now only if they could have a members card and a decent website... read more

This has to be the least friendly Madewell I've ever stepped foot into. Came in today and despite walking by/near almost every associate on both floors.. not a single one said hello or engaged with me nor any of the other customers. I had never been to Madewell before - in fact, probably hadn't seen their clothes at all except for maybe on someone and didn't know it. My friend described it as a younger J.Crew, and after finally visiting their Soho stores I have to agree. We walked in and my friend went straight for their sale section upstairs. I browsed the downstairs before joining her - sheer force of will power prevented me from taking any article of clothing off of the racks to purchase, or even just try on. My friend loves their tees that are uber soft and comfy, and snagged several of them. Sale prices seem pretty nice overall, and I couldn't stop myself from getting just one leather belt since I do actually need those. And the salespeople are so nice!! While waiting for my friend to try things on, I watched a guy help a young customer try to find an affordable dress for a wedding, and he kept bringing her options and talking with her about what she liked and didn't like so that he could better help her. Even the girl behind the register was extremely nice and chatty. I don't remember the last time I saw so many salespeople smiling at once, it was semi-blinding. So now I have a major problem: after rekindling my love of J.Crew, I may start an affair with Madewell pretty soon. read more

I like the two story aspect of this Madewell, in theory. The downstairs was very neat and easy to shop and felt more curated. The upstairs was a NIGHTMARE. I will give it the benefit of the doubt since the sale was an extra % off but it was a mess. There is very little room to pass in the lofty area if you have anything in your hands. I had absolutely no help in the fitting room and had to ask to go in after standing there for a while. They have the same cute stuff as the others but if you are looking for a more personal shopping experience (which is what they are supposed to offer) I would go to a less busy part of town. read more

I've been hearing so much about this place, so I finally went out yesterday to check out the hype. First and foremost, I'm not the kind of person that needs to love every piece of clothing in a store. You know what I mean? If there are few items in the store that I like, it's a good store for me. Ok back to the review: The store is big. two stories. The first floor mainly has jeans and some shirts and the second floor has shirts, tanks, tees, etc. The staff is super friendly and helpful. The fitting rooms are a good size. My one big colossal gripe is how disorganized the store is. They have to put all the shirts on the same floor.. or the cardigans on the same floor. I felt like I was going up and down the stairs comparing things! I found a green sweater upstairs and the salesgirl told me the other colors were downstairs. And the stair case was 2 stories high! Where's the common sense people? The clothes were cute. Not too gap or jcrew-like. I loved the simple v-neck tees and grandpa sweaters. The jeans averaged around $98. They weren't for me though. Aside from that gripe, I really liked Madewell and I'll definitely go back. Last thing - if you spend more than a $100, you get a free Madewell sack. Happy shopping! read more

I love the preppy-hipster style of the clothes at Madewell, but everything seems a little more expensive than it should be given the quality and weight of the materials. I was so thrilled when Madewell decided to open a New York location. I first noticed the pop-up shop that appeared on lower Broadway during the holiday season, but now the shop has settled into its permanent Broome Street location. The clothes are more casual & more reasonably priced than those of its sister store, J. Crew -- perfect for those of us who work downtown. I am a big fan of the knitwear and dresses, and I love the fact that they carry branded goods such as Hunter wellies and Made Her Think jewelry, as well as a small selection of books and magazines. The sales are so worth the search, and the salespeople are awesome, especially Raymond! I'll keep shopping here until I have a job that requires me to wear something other than sundresses and skinny jeans (and even then, it'll be a great place to build the perfect weekend wardrobe). read more

i can't believe i haven't reviewed madewell yet, but i can agree with most of the reviews below. i'm not a jcrew hater tho. in fact, i love them and i love madewell. the jean do a lil big, but they fit me like a glove. i'm a no ass, no hips kinda gal and i can get over how much i love my skinny low rise jeans. i wear them all the time. i used to wear the matchsticks from j crew, but the fit on the skinny low's are impeccable. my bff was in town and i got her hooked on them too. she's more curvy than i and they fit her too. it's like sisterhood of the traveling pants. look out for special thursday nite events at the shop. they serve nibbles and pop. i've been to denim dark thursdays, where it's $25 off jeans and free hemming and embroidery. i haven't seen this invite in a while, but they do have artists come in a design tee and totes. they even once had a bead bar to make jewelry. they are having a crazy final sale right now with 40% off sale items. it's ridiculous. $110 for $18. get there quick. read more

I received the best customer service ever last week at Madewell. First the obvious stuff. I was in the shop with two girlfriends and we bought lots of clothes that were really cute and reasonably priced. The register staff was super efficient and friendly and the shopping experience was great. BUT, here is the star part. I forgot my wallet on the counter. The next day when I couldn't find it and assumed it was stolen since we were in a couple of touristy area but we called the store and they had it. They said that they would happily fedex it to San Francisco (where I live) at no charge. I then got a call from them asking for my email to send a confirmation which they sent. All of this is obviously going WAY above and beyond. But then... I had been out of the office for two weeks on vacation and got back to my desk this morning to 22 new voicemails. Number 22 was from Gregory at Madewell moments after I had left my wallet there. He had called my office number from my business card to let me know that he had found my wallet so I wouldn't worry. Best fitting jeans of my life. The prices are somewhat steep but the jeans ($125) are worth every penny. The Soho location has the best sale rack (upstairs) but only at end of season. The staff is bubbly and helpful (not pushy). Madewell has its own line of leather goods and they are fantastic (beautifully crafted handbags, wallets, and shoes). The shoes left blisters on the first wear but since they are leather, I assume they will eventually conform to my foot. They also ship everything from their website (including to Canada!). I would describe the design as: upscale bohemian cute. If that's you, this is your spot. read more

Never heard of Madewell. I'm 70. Male. From the Midwest. Driving south on Broadway. At Broome in SoHo my son (early 30s) sees the store. Explains the store (I guess). His wife couldn't come (she's home in NC). He's been meaning to buy her a bag from. I say let's get her one. Around the block. Park. Inside (Sunday AM). He calls the wife. She's ecstatic. Texts a picture of the one she wants. They got it. We get it. And a pair of sandals for inside the bag; they've got the correct size-color. 2 sales associates and cashier were wonderful. Guess they got rid of the bad apples that other reviewers got a bad taste of. In and out fast; just the way I like to shop. read more

At a recommendation of a friend, I checked out Madewell. A lot of the womenswear items were synthetic or blends, but I settled for two long cardigans that were a blend of mostly natural materials. I wore one the next week and the material piled after one wear. I was not a happy camper, so I returned the other cardi. I steer clear of Madewell now, but the staff is friendly and the store is cute. read more

this is the only location i've gone to.... but man! if they're all like this, i'd go to them all! i wonder if they have a store in the bay area! a small cute store, two stories...
