Finally got into Madewell this weekend and it did not disappoint. I have always been a J.Crew fan and this is like J.Crew but with a hipper side. The floor staff were very helpful in finding sizes for me and giving their opinions. They had a great sale section upstairs. Well-designed jeans with contrasting stitchy, comfortable, flattery sweaters, and other basics are countered by brightly colored and elegantly patterned scarves and an amazing selection of truly magnificent leather boots and bags. I love Madewell jeans! I HATE shopping for jeans, but I love how easy it is to go in the fitting room in here with a bunch of choices and then having the staff check up on you and even suggesting finding another size/style for you while you are trying something on. It eliminates the need to have to take off/ put on your clothes to find something else! Amazing! Well, the store is two floors itself, kinda of on the small side, but hey that's NYC for you - space is limited. I visited this Madewell store on my NYC trip (my first time in New York!!) This was one of the stops I made walking in SoHo. I"ve heard of Madewell from JCrew emails and also from people who love JCrew (as much as I do.) The store felt small (b/c of the amount of customers inside the store at once) but it had a lot of cute shirts, laid back t shirts, and trendy jackets/shoes! I didn't really enjoy the atmosphere because most people there were really aggressively shopping and I felt constantly in the way of someone else...which really was a big turn off but unfortunately in SoHo I guess that's the way it is (ppl shopping for the next thing in fashion.) I actually did purchase some Madewell merch but not in this SoHo store but at Tysons. It would be even better if they had a store in San Francisco. read more

Cute two-level store in SoHo that sells cute clothes. Much hipper and more laid-back than its sister J. Crew. It isn't cheap, but they have great sales on things like leggings and jeans. I have a black sparkly cardigan from there that is super adorable and a wardrobe staple. read more

Literally rudest customer service I have EVER experienced in my life!!!!! First, no one offered to help me look for my jean size even though they weren't doing anything else. When I finally do find my jean size and go to the fitting room someone cuts me on line and the sales associate lets her get the room before me even though we both knew I was waiting. Worst she never offered to help me look for anything and she didn't even greet me when I finally got my room (event hough she introduced herself and asked for everyone else's names). Bottom line save your time and go to the flat iron Madewell or stick to it online. read more

This is one of the most irritating emails I have ever received (from Madewell): "We've sold out of the style you ordered. As a result, we had to change your order. The upside is you obviously have great taste. We didn't charge you for the sold-out style,but if you have any questions, please contact us at 866 544 1937 or contactus@madewell.com." I ordered this product with plenty of time for christmas delivery. I paid extra for fast delivery. When i ordered it showed in stock. I NEVER received a notice after ordering, that it wasn't coming until Christmas day!!! I called 3 days before christmas on why it wasn't here yet. The phone person apologized and said it was out of stock for new orders, BUT they just sent mine out that day for over-night delivery arriving the 23d of December. And of course it never came! This was the primary gift for Christmas for a very special person to me. It successfully made this Holiday a little less special. Why on earth would they not email your customers saying it was out of stock in time for me to get something else, and then when I call - say it is coming? They would probably give me the BS that it was a systems problem. A national store can easily make sure these systems and processes are in place and working for the biggest commercial holiday of the year .Then gloating about your great sales season insulting me with: "The upside is you obviously have great taste." i'm sorry they think this is so funny. read more

After perusing the Madewell NYC store, I found the quality of the textile and fabric of appalling low quality. The fabrics were sheer, synthetic or flimsy. The espadrilles from France had plastic soles (were they really made in France?). Once again, our fashion choices are dominated by another overpriced store selling poor quality goods made in Asia. I travel to New York often for work and always make a point to go shopping on Broadway if I have time, and this Madewell location is one of my favorite places to visit while I'm in town. While shopping there on my most recent trip to NYC, I picked out quite a few items that were not available at my local Madewell store back home, and was super excited to purchase them and bring them back with me. Several store assistants helped me during my shopping experience and were all around super helpful and friendly! However, when I went to check out, we encountered a technical issue that prevented the register from accepting any of my payment cards (which I had been successfully using all day). After several failed attempts, the store associate suggested that we try another register, and when that didn't work either, she solicited the help of the store manager and we agreed that it would be best if I just paid for the items over the phone the next day after he system issue was sorted out, and ship the items to my home afterwards. The manager (Chelsea) was also kind enough to give me an additional discount on my purchase to compensate for the time I spent in the store trying to sort out the payment problem. The next day, I received a call from another helpful store associate (Crystal) who checked on all of my items for me and helped me pay for my order via phone with no issues, and I was assured that my items would be overnighted to my home. When several days passed and I still hadn't received my items, I started to get worried that my package might have been stolen, so I called Madewell one more time to check on the tracking number. The store associate assisting me (Daniella) checked on my items and discovered that they had not been shipped yet (they had been mistaken for store merchandise that was on hold for another customer) and she assured me that they would be shipped to me ASAP. She also included a gift card with my items to make up for the confusion. As usual, Madewell amazed me with their amazingly sweet and helpful employees and I am so grateful for the wonderful customer service experience I had as a customer of this location, even in lieu of several unexpected hiccups. I'm so impressed by how kindly and efficiently the employees assisted me in the store (especially considering the fact that it was the day after Christmas and the store was SLAMMED), and I am even more impressed by how well they communicated with me afterwards to make sure I received my package (and compensation for any confusion or mistakes that occurred). In my experience, Madewell has consistently gone above and beyond the customer service standard upheld by most stores, and in my opinion the employees at this location are in the top tier of this company's retail employees. Thank you SO much Chelsea, Crystal, and Daniella for making my experience so positive and pleasant, even when it had a frustrating start!! I will be a customer here for life. :) read more

I love almost everything about Madewell. The prices are reasonable and the styles are amazing. However, about this one particular store location, the sales people are dreadful! I find them to be completely uninterested in helping customers---only until that moment you pick something up--that's when they come running to help you with a size or fitting room. Sometimes I can't even tell who works there because the store gets packed with teenagers who are more appropriately dressed than the staff itself. Overall they are rather rude and aloof. I wish their staff was more like that of J. Crew. read more

When a pair of high waisted skinnies were not available in the wash I wanted she took down my email so she could personally email me when they were available (early October). Where am i??? 5 stars for their customer service and rapid checkout. I came in here one evening to purchase a gift for my girlfriend but had nothing in mind. I was immediately greeted at the door and was told there was 30% off sale items, which is always good. While browsing through a couple dresses I was asked if I wanted to put the items to the side so I can shop easier. Wow! What a considerate gesture! A couple of other associates offered to help out with a size and give some reccommendations. I wish I remembered the names of the sales associates because they were super helpful. I eventually left with a dress and a pair of heels that the cashier was kind enough to wrap as a gift for me. Although this is a women's store, JCrew their sister store is right next door and I will definitely pop in to check that out since I received excellent service from Madewell. read more

While I am actually not writing a review for this store specifically, I'm writing to complain about the complete inefficiency of their online store. I placed an order for an item (they say on the site that sold-out items won't be listed, so the assumption is that if something is available to order, then it's available stock-wise). My order was processed. The next day, I am contacted to call in and verify my billing address, which I do and they say my order is released for processing. A few days later, I was yet again contacted to inform me that the item is actually sold out. When I reply, they inform me that the item actually is available at a store location but I need to call all over again to place a new order. I don't believe I'm being totally unreasonable by thinking its ridiculous to be expected to place orders for the same item multiple times over the course of several days. Talk about inefficient and painful - was my first Madewell.com order and my last. Don't bother ordering if you want a speedy, pain-free online shopping experience. read more

I'm writing about this store in particular, not the brand itself. The male manager I worked with was wonderful and deserves 5 stars, the other employees are the reason I'm only giving 4 stars. I came in one day about 40 minutes before closing, and having previously worked retail I understand how annoying it is having people come in close to closing time; however, I was looking for a specific pair of boots and not wandering aimlessly. The girls upstairs wouldn't move so I could look at the sale section while waiting to see if they had the boots and said in front of me that they needed to turn the music off (a hint for customers to get going) and then started turning the lights off while I was still upstairs. I went downstairs and ended up buying a different pair of boots and waited while the male manager called various other stores to see if they had the original pair I was looking for. He called upstairs and had the associates turn all the lights back on a frequently apologized for how long it was taking to find the boots (it wasn't long, he was just incredibly nice). Overall- not impressed with the employees, but loved the manager and would go here again because of his excellent customer service. read more

I visited the Madewell Soho location last week and my experience was awful. For being a company all about customer service, this location was more than disappointing. I went to the front register to pick up 3 items on hold. There was no line, and only one woman was checking out at the register. I waited behind her and five employees separately went behind the register, ignored me, and left - none of them asked me if I was ready to check out or if I needed anything. Two of them even had time to stand there and had a conversation about their personal lives. After the woman in front of me was done, a kind cashier gave me two of the items that I put on hold and told me the other item was upstairs. I went upstairs and they said it wasn't there and tried to send me downstairs again to double check. Luckily a manager stepped in and said she'd grab the item for me off the floor, how ridiculous to have me go up and down, up and down, especially when you're wearing a headset.. I went to purchase four items, all that were on sale online during a 40% off sale event. The cashier told me none of them were on sale and I was confusing promotion versus sale. After showing her on my phone because she wouldn't let me show her on the iPad, she was annoyed and cold and adjusted the prices because they were in fact on sale. Overall, the employees at this location were rude and disinterested in the customers, and they didn't even know the products or promotions going on.. I had to show her the sale promo. I'll be avoiding this location. read more
