I really don't like this location. It boils down to the aggressive hard-sell approach of the managers. I was constantly being pestered with "How are ya doing?" "Everything ok?" Geez, let me live... The 14th Street location is smaller, but the staff aren't nearly as annoying and pushy. read more

I'm saddened to say, but my experience at the Georgetown Madewell made me very disappointed. I went in on a slightly busy day, but the amount of rude customer relations I received was insane. I first had to go through 3 employees to get my hands on monogram examples, and I became dizzy! Running in circles, passing me from one associate to the next, trying to put me on "hold" while I was right in front of their faces! One, that happened to be the manager, was rushing me into making a decision on a monogram pattern to the point where it became annoying! She was so in-genuine about it, too. And if that wasn't enough- I had 1 employee attempt to subtly assume I was stealing something because I had my school back pack. Of course, this was after I had made an $100.00 purchase . Now, I understand that this can be a common scenario. I work in retail and understand fully the stress on LP issues. But the employee was all over me and I just had to be blunt and say "I just bought something- I'm leaving now." I love the product and the recognition the company has towards students and young professional women, but I won't ever shop at this Georgetown location again. read more

I'm a big fan of the Madewell, and this store is my favorite location. As one of the larger Madewell's I've visited, this one has fitting rooms both upstairs and downstairs, making the shopping experience more smooth and efficient. Also, the sale representatives here are especially helpful. As a previous Yelpier mentioned, Sophie is super! She has helped be pick out a number of pants and shirts, all of which I love. Madewell is a great store for girls like me who are in their late 20's and want to look laid back, and artsy, and cool but don't want to be as preppy as J.Crew, as funky as Urban, or as girly as Anthropologie. You can get well structured American classics at Madewell that will last a long time and blend well with other pieces. The Georgetown store definitely excels in customer service. I have received a lot of help and attention whenever I have shopped there and I mean even times when I only bought a $20 on sale t-shirt. Whenever I have been in with friends who needed help with buying a dress for a wedding or putting together some work outfits, the sales associates have been very helpful. Obviously, if you go at a quieter time, say on a weekday, you will be able to get more assistance. Upon entry you should immediately run, not walk, up the stairs to the sale section. Madewell clothes are expensive and the discounted merchandise makes it more affordable. Periodically they will take an additional 40% off of already marked merchandise and that is the time to stock up. Definitely check the sale section to see if they have anything you want before browsing the rest of the store. My only reason for deduction of a star here is that they sometimes forget to take the anti-theft device off of clothes. This has happened to me twice at this store and its super annoying to have to make a special trip back just to get this removed. Make sure you check all your merchandise! read more

I love Madewell, and I was devastated when the Madewell in Annapolis closed. Thankfully this one is just as close to my home. The staff was friendly and helpful. My husband wanted to purchased a handbag for me that was sold out online and they held one for us until we could make it up to DC. I used to shop at this store when it was the old Puma store and I love, love, love the design of the Madewell concept in this space. The clothes are great and current without being trendy (ps, you can also get good deals on Madewell products on www.shopbop.com). The purpose of Yelp, though, is to review particular local businesses. As a brand and a company I think Madewell is great - 5 stars - I just don't think this store is a good representation of what the brand can be in terms of service. I think I was spoiled with my first Madewell store. The associates there were so friendly and knowledgeable and always just so nice. Not so much here. I walked in the door and mid-way through the first floor an associate - with poorly chosen Red Lipstick - pops in front of me to elicit her very clearly memorized spiel about the current promotions. Other than Red Lipstick's original dictation, I was in the store for another 20 minutes without any contact with sales staff. When I went to the register to return a few items I had purchased about six weeks ago and purchase new items, the sales associate at the cash wrap went mute when she looked at my receipt. Red Lipstick then popped up and told me in another well-rehearsed spiel that there is a 30-day return policy. I asked what other options I had - as I had my receipt and the tags were still attached - and had to hear the same spiel again. Conclusion: I ended up leaving with the items I purchased a few weeks ago, no new items and a bad taste in my mouth. Moral of the story: Madewell is a great brand and cultivator of other brands but don't expect service to meet the same standard. You're better off shopping at another store (there is a Madewell store in both Tysons and Montgomery) or online. read more

Madewell is one of my favorite "mall stores" because the pieces are unique and funky without being too young and sloppy. You don't see their clothes everywhere like Urban Outfitters or JCrew and they don't have their logo splashed over everything. Love the dresses and tees. Denim shopping is usually a frustrating experience for me as I can never find a pair that fits my body. But my jean dreams came thanks to this store! The sales associate, Nora, was super attentive and helped me find exactly what I was looking for. She recommended the curvy line because I have more of an hourglass shape. It was the first time I've been able to wear a "vintage" jean without the dreaded, massive waist gap us bigger thigh girls are always working with. Like some previous other reviewers I am not a fan of Madewell's parent company J.Crew. Holy menopause batman! Young professional women (their so called target market) are not touching their clothes with a 10 foot pole! However, Madewell is the antithesis of what J.Crew has become. Their styles are chic, artsy, with an emphasis on denim, and have a much better quality than J.Crew. They also have great fits, and a variety of different cuts that flatter all figures. Their clothes look very effortless, but allow you to look put together at the same time. The people who work here have always been very helpful with helping me with sizing, finding more colors, and helping with finding accoutrements to finish an outfit. My only problem is that there have been a few times I found pants that I love, and my size is nowhere to be found. Having a fairly common pant size, with probable high volume is likely the cause, but I am a brat who doesn't get out to clothing ship much so I want my pants when I want them. read more

I don't like J Crew. Madewell is the spawn of J Crew. So I stayed away from it all these years. Almost. But then came along Madewell's Fall 2013 catalog in my mailbox because of ONE unfortunate purchase I'd made some time ago, and it was begging for attention. The stuff they have in right now, is The Sartorialist's dream come true. If you know who I'm talking about, you need to go there right now! Tartan print? Check. Luxe sweatshirts with nonchalant french type print? Check. Silk tanks and feminine blouses? Check and check! Not to mention those jeans that will flatter every body type and beautiful androgynous bags. It's a nod to the 1990s, but with a modern day twist. Maybe it's because Madewell got cooler, or I got un-cooler, but whatever it is that's happening...it's working out very well. read more

The layout and design of this store is just gorgeous - it made shopping here so easy and enjoyable! The staff was attentive and helpful without being overbearing. I was in love with the store before I even realized there was an upstairs! Very high quality products, especially denim and leather goods. They come at a bit of a price, but in my experience it's worth it! Products last a very long time, and returns due to issues of quality are always accepted. Display a student ID or provide a university email address for 15% off, which works on both sale and regular price items, and on top of any other promotions taking place! I've been to this location several times when I was visiting Georgetown, and the times I've visited the associates have always been genuinely helpful. With any questions about sizing, and whether or not there was a particular item available online, I can honestly say that I've had positive experiences with this location. I have been a fan of Madewell since it's inception - as a loyal J. Crew shopper and a former employee, I was all over applying my discount to slightly hipper, more unique styles from the folks at the Crew. And this store (there really aren't enough of them!) does not disappoint for loyal online shoppers... I love the look, feel and service at Madewell. It's hard not to want one of everything when you're inside, and the staff is friendly and keeps offering tips, add-ons and help. I had a great experience inside. I spent a good deal of money on a leather tote at this Madewell about a year ago. Recently, one of the handles ripped and the zipper broke off. They replaced my old bag for free with a brand new one, no questions asked- they just had to take the original and send it back. The layout of the store is very nice and easy to browse. I had never been in a Madewell, but glad I did as I received great customer service from the ENTIRE staff. I did not catch all of their names but the manager down to all three sales reps were not only friendly but perfectly helpful. Honestly, their security guy was even friendly! So, I will definitely be back. There jeans are worth trying on! Different cuts and styles with a lil wiggle room! Love it. I tried on a few different shirts and sweaters and found just the right fit. Worth spending a little more money for just the right look. Although it is casual, you can find some nice dress casual things for work. Also, I spotted some very cute dresses that looked versatile... add a scarf or jacket; wear with sandals to boots; great to accessorize. read more
