A real boutique experience--without the neiman marcus attitude. Yes, it is true this is not a place for $30 cardigans - that's what talbots and gap is for. This is a great place for investment pieces that you won't find in major department stores. There are fun trunk shows through the season that I look forward to. My betsy collection includes a great jacket, a timeless sweater, and some amazing shoes. I've always had great service, but when its busy, I just come back later or wait--they pay attention to your needs and know how to flatter your figure. There's also a great "gambler's sale" at the end of the season, so if you hold out, you can usually find some amazing deals - you'll find me diving in on the first day. If you want cookie cutter fashion, there's plenty of that around. If you want something special that stands out from a crowd-there's betsy fisher. As a male who doesn't know much about women's fashion the assistance I received from the staff at Betsy Fisher was first rate!!! My sales person Emilie was top notch, patient, attentive, generous with her time and more than willing to show me multiple articles of clothing & shoes. After making my purchases, Betsy Fisher offered to wrap my purchases, working from the floor carefully boxing the what I had bought!!! Don't be intimidated by the buzzer on the door. This boutique south of Dupont Circle has been around a quite a few years, and it's staying power is due to Betsy's great taste in selecting pieces for her namesake boutique. The other things going for this boutique 1) friendly staff, 2) selection of sizes above single digits. Many other boutiques have a snooty staff and nothing above a size 10. At Betsy's I find some cool (not matronly) clothes in my size. They also have gorgeous bags, shoes, and jewelry. Yes, it's pricey, but the clothes are designer pieces you won't see everywhere, and you get excellent service! read more

Although I haven't shopped the clothes extensively, I bought a pair of beautiful, elegant earrings at this location. However, more notably than the fashion offered there, is there customer service. Love Betsy Fisher. As someone who lives between Admo/ Dupont this is my one stop shop for the times when I need something to wear but don't have the requisite 2 hours to travel to/ wade through the racks at Georgetown. The prices are comparable to or even slightly lower than Georgetown stores like CUSP, Barneys co-op, Wink, etc. Jewelry and shoes are both very well curated. Clothing selection is deceptively limited as well, but the items are extremely versatile and easy to style as young/ older, formal/ fun. etc. My only complaint is that it's much more difficult to find clothing in my size (2-4) than at stores that cater to a younger audience. But I can't dock Betsy one star for selling out her styles. read more

I stopped here to browse on a recent trip to DC from Seattle, not at all expecting to actually buy anything -- I am a 12/14 on a good day and I honestly did not think they would have anything close to my size, as the norm in stores like this in Seattle is to cater to the 2/4/6 crowd. In any case, as soon as I entered the owner immediately came over to offer me a blood orange mimosa (!) and ask me some questions about my style and needs. After trying on a few items she immediately "got" me - my style, my likes, and most importantly, my body and what would work on it. From that point forward she brought me dozens of things to try on, including a few items that were obviously just for fun and not something she expected me to purchase (like a super over-the-top $600 dress that was just hilarious to put on). There were a few items she brought that I immediately said no to, and she did not pressure or question me at all. Not only did the store carry sizes that worked for my curvy body, but they even stocked cute shoes to fit my size 11 feet that normally resemble large loaves of bread! Big win. In the end, I walked out with two great dresses and a really cozy sweater. Two of the items were discounted by more than 70% so I also managed to get a really good deal. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in DC! read more

This store has great (but expensive) clothing that is well edited. The merchandise isn't at all overwhelming as the store has a lot of open space. Betsy was so nice and offered me a drink. Unfortunately, I had to decline since I was about to head out to an eye appointment. Apparently, they even drive to your home with several options which is convenient. Stopped in while on a business trip to DC in January, based on the yelp reviews. I was 6 months pregnant at the time, so not really expecting to find anything. The staff was extremely helpful but did not "hover", which I appreciated. I lucked out and it was one of their rare sale events, so I ended up with a shockingly comfortable pair of heels (that I am still wearing, and getting compliments on, at 8.5 months pregnant!) and a dress with enough stretch to wear with my bump. I live in NYC where there are plenty of stores (some say it is the fashion capital of the US) but I buy all my clothes at Betsy Fisher. There are a number of reasons. There are brands of clothing new to me that I would not be able to find in NYC. Everything is selected with the professional woman in mind. The sales staff is incredibly helpful. The entire experience is pleasant-how many other stores will make you a cup of tea or give you a bottle of water and let you use the ladies' room? True prices are not the lowest anywhere but nor are they crazy high. They are bridge line prices. Quality is crazy high. read more

I passed this shop everyday on my way to and from work for the past year assuming that it would be too "upity" and pricey for me. I finally went in and was greated warmly by the staff. The selection is a little sparce, but the pieces were all winners! Their prices are a little steap, but their sales are out of this world if you can catch them! Eh, not impressed. I should probably say that I really hate when you have to buzz into a store. I don't know if it's safety thing or a way to know who's coming in, but at 5:30 on a Tuesday night on Connecticut Avenue, there's really no need for that. I entered the store, and a sales clerk just started at me. No "hi", no "can I help you," no "how are you", etc. It was weird. And I was in work clothes, carrying a very expensive purse - it wasn't like I rolled in there in my pjs and looked like I was going to make a scene or something. Strange. While they do have a wide range of sizes up to 14 (which is fantastic, because curvy girls love clothes and will spend the money too), the merchandise was way overpriced. I saw a few Donna Ricco dresses for over $400, when Macy's carries the same brand at about half that price. I'll pay more for good service and a fun shopping experience, but not that much. Just had to share how the clothes at Betsy Fisher are literally awed by those around the world. I bought a gorgeous Magaschoni cashmere scarf and recently took it on my travels to Doha, Qatar. It was the perfect travel companion and easy to throw over my shoulder while traveling on the plane or throughout the city. No matter where I went everyone wanted to know where I had gotten this gorgeous scarf. The staff and Betsy herself have been a huge part of all the amazing compliments I have received throughout my travels. She not only directed me to an alterations shop in Georgetown, but personally drove myself and my husband. Betsy stayed and even payed for the alterations. For years I walked by this store, impressed by the clothes in the window, but assuming it was too expensive for me. I finally walked in, and - wow - I haven't gone to another clothes store since. There are cute, moderately priced casual clothes, and elegant, unique work items that draw endless comments from impressed friends and strangers every thime I wear them! Worth every penny for the sheer joy I get wearing them - again and again (great values!!). I had been a very practical, no-nonsense, safe dresser, but Betsy and her team have transformed my wardrobe and my attitude towards dressing so that I now find it FUN! She loves picking the best selection of designer clothes each season for her customers, and personally travels to where the designers have their studios to do so. I frequently use the store's shop-at-home service; the staff is very talented in rounding up possibilities for day or nighttime wear, and always find items that work. Unfortunately, this establishment contradicts everything a small business should represent. The owners lack integrity and consideration for customers. You can expect unwarranted bombardment from Betsy. She is clearly only looking to sell as opposed to actually pleasing a client and listening to their needs. I always love to stop by this store. I have bought some things here that have served me extremely well over years of wear. I don't tend to spend a lot on clothes, so I don't buy a lot of things here, but when I do, I'm very pleased. And as others have said, the sales staff is great. I created a yelp account just to be able to write this. I just got off the phone with Betsy. Her boutique is marvelous--creative, friendly and way, way beyond my usual budget. But I got a dress there for a family memorial service after looking many places. Her staff was empathetic and truly helpful, working within my budget. On the one hand, it doesn't matter what you wear to a funeral. On the other, wearing something I felt good in helped me hold on to the confidence to run the service. Great dress. The next day I discovered the dress had ripped--an obvious and hidden flaw in its construction and nothing Betsy could have known about. Two months passed while I dealt with the aftermath of the family tragedy. I finally called her today. No receipt. Two months later. "Oh I'm so sorry," she said. "That is unacceptable. Send it back and we will refund you. I don't want you to have any stress about this." I've found during recent hard times that small, compassionate, human encounters such as these make the days bearable. I used to live Betsy Fisher. I used to go in often, talk to the sales staff who worked there (those ladies were fixtures, the three of them who were there for years, and they all exited within a year or two of each other, sadly). I never felt like I wasn't as special if I didn't buy something, either, since I wasn't looking to monopolize the salespersons' conversation or time with other customers. I was there on slow days, though, so we built up a friendship. Betsy was nice, would come out of the back, would call me by name. I visited a few times in recent years, after the staff turned over, but it's not the same vibe. Nobody tries to ask if I need help, nobody really makes conversation, and even Betsy looked at me as though she was seeing a ghost and said, "Oh, long time no see!" then walked away. Nobody wanted to know if this would be one of the times I buy something, since I own hats, belts, scarves, camis, sweaters, and yes, even skirts and tops from them! Wow. But, not everyone wants to make a purchase every single time. I just miss the people who used to work there, in that the replacement folks don't seem to know me at all or want to get to know me, on those same slower days. It does have some beautiful merchandise, but I just want it to have that same, personal feeling again! read more

I have been shopping at Betsy Fisher since they opened in the 1980's. They were amazing then and they have only gotten better and better. First, Betsy is a remarkable woman with the best fashion eye I have ever seen. She can read you and pick out the best ideas that will work on you and the items will last and last. Quality is tops here. Second, the shop is a showcase and has excellent lighting so you can really see what you're getting. Everything is well displayed and you never get that pressured feeling either. Third, they actually serve you drinks, sometimes food, and hold events, so you feel like you're being welcomed into a little community. And fourth, the sales staff is fantastic! They are all expert at helping you look your best. In fact, they won't let you buy something that doesn't look wonderful on you! I go there whenever I come back to D.C. for a visit and look forward to a warm greeting from everyone there. read more
