Our businesses need to know that no matter what we look like or whether or not we are a walk in (just hair cut) we should be treated with respect and be nice. Receptionist/s or staff need to know that "staring down" is not professional or nice. When I asked about and where to park, I was told by receptionist "read the sign." I was really hoping to have a different experience (like other reviews I read) even though I knew I was going to wait and be patient. I just didn't appreciate the unpleasant environment. Amy is amazing! It was my first time at this salon, and I don't think I've ever left happier with my hair. I have really fine, curly hair and almost every salon I've been to has no idea what to do with it. I never dye my hair or get anything new done to it, so I was in desperate need of a change. Amy gave me the exact cut I wanted and also some rose-gold balayage highlights. She really knew her stuff, so I immediately felt at-ease with her. I've gotten so many compliments for my hair already! Can't wait to go back to try a different color. All-in-all, the whole place was so welcoming. I usually dread going to the salon, but I'm looking forward to coming back here. Edited to Add: I went back to the same stylist and he had no recollection of who I was and quite frankly was pretty rude to me. He seemed like he was in a hurry to get my hair cut, and didn't even dry it all the way. The front desk was very disorganized - I wasn't greeted when I walked in and there wasn't a goodbye either. It was a couple of teenagers chatting back & forth instead of paying attention to the customers. I no longer choose to give my business to Madison Avenue, and thought I should update my review to say as much. Okay, I've lived in LA for 2.5 years and have only had my hair cut 2 times..I dread the thought of visiting someone new {and the chance of having a major hair disaster} so instead, I just get my hair cut every time I travel back home and can see my trusted hairstylist. That is until now...I was in dire need of a cut and no plans in the near future to visit home. So I sucked it up and yelped hair salons, finally deciding to go with Madison Avenue. I made an appointment with Anthony, and he was amazing. He gave me such a great cut that I just absolutely love! I will definitely be back to see him and am pretty sure he is my new CA hairstylist. This is nice salon and while you wait they offer you coffee, water, whatever you want to drink and I was there in the morning so they had bagels. Wow! What a clean and classy salon! I love it. I felt comfortable from the moment I walked in. After reading a little online, I decided to make an appointment with a girl named Amy-who was said to be great. She definitely lived up to her reputation! I went into the salon with this gross copper orange blonde hair after a few bad dye jobs and I asked Amy to fix it. I brought some pictures for color suggestion and just asked her to clean up the cut because I'm trying to grow it out. She did an incredible job correcting the color. Because my roots were pretty grown out, she matched it up almost perfectly then added some subtle highlights. The color is perfect! The highlights look amazing! Thank you so much Amy! Amy is exactly what you want in a hair-stylist, she is young, friendly, sweet and very helpful. She did exactly what I wanted, trimmed it (not butchered it, like Supercuts or Fantastic Sams always do) and reached the perfect color. Very worth the money, and she deserved a big tip too! If you're looking for a local salon, I would definitely recommend it. It is very clean and modern looking, and in my opinion definitely worth the price. The first and last time I was here (before last week) was in high school for a prom updo... yeah it's been a while... but I needed to get my hair done by people I knew wouldn't mess it up (2 weeks till my cousin's wedding means no time for damage control) So I had my hair cut here recently with Megan. She was very personable and professional. She did such a great job too! I wish my hair could naturally stay straight and neat the way it did after she styled it. It cost me about $65 for cut and blowdry which is more than the $35-$40 haircuts I try to stick to, buuuut my hair is long and very thick so that price is not bad at all. She paid great attention to detail and made sure I was satisfied with everything before sending me on my way. Will I be back? Probably not too often since I'm perfectly fine with my $35 cuts, but I would definitely recommend it to anyone in the area who is willing to pay in their price range. read more

I've now gone here twice, both time my hair was cut by Kelly. I really like her alot, she is extremely sweet and friendly. The first time I got my hair cut, I was trying to grow it out so merely wanted a trim. I got a discount as it was my frist time, I tipped her like 20 bucks because she was extremely helpful, and spent time with detailing my hair exactly how I wanted it. This last time I was there, I decided to take some length off of it. I told her I wanted some length off but mostly for it just to have A LOT more body. My own fault for talking too much to her, and not paying attention but it ended up much shorter than I had anticipated. I was okay with the length at first but since I didn't get it dried it began shrinking on my way home. When I finally got to blowdrying it once home, it was pretty flat and "mom-ish" looking. Over the next couple days, as my hair got used to the layers it started looking and sitting better but, is still very flat. I have had my hair this length in the past and it was not this flat so I don't know if it's the type of layering she did or what. :( I will say however, it feels so much less heavy and is 100x healthier looking, so I imagine it will grow out to look pretty good. Everyone keeps mentioning how much healthier, softer and shinier it is, but keep saying "it will grow out", not the best compliment I've ever received on a haircut but it's okay. I'm still going to give this place a solid 4 stars though, they have always managed to fit me in within 24 hours of calling, the staff is super friendly, the salon is clean and organized, and I feel like if I had maybe expressed this past time what I wanted better, it would've been a nicer cut. No place is perfect, but this place is certainly close! I thought I would never be able to afford extensions, great color, great cut and a blow out that makes me look like a million bucks but I can! Kelly Gappa is my hairstylist and now that I have been going to her for over six months I can leave an honest and straightforward yelp assessment of her personality, professionalism and eye for style and color. Kelly is not a normal hairstylist. Kelly is someone that makes you excited about yourself. If I come into the salon in a bad mood or just stressed out, I always leave laughing with a huge smile on my face because Kelly so incredibly personable and caring. She keeps notes on your preferences, hair type, what you've done with your hair since you've started seeing her, etc.. and she always remembers me! I can recommend her to ANYONE and say I've NEVER had ANYONE color my hair like she does. She has an eye for it. In fact I receive complements on my hair at least twice a week since I've started going to Kelly. No one wants to spend an arm and a leg and she understands that. Her pricing is beyond reasonable, it almost feels like a steal. The environment is comfortable and clean and there is always plenty of parking. What more could you ask for? read more

I am so happy with my cut and color from this place! I explained that I wanted my color to be more "specific" and brunette (I'm a natural brunette, but have the ombre highlight fade thing going on out of laziness, not because I'm cool). The owner took a look at my face and immediately sized up my complexion and rattled off the color to the assistant. The color turned out perfect and I feel like I don't have to wear a stitch of makeup because it really does wonders for my complexion. Two people did the blow dry at once, so I felt like a princess, and I was thrilled with the efficiency. She also used these wacky looking scissors to take some weight off my hair, and I can totally tell a difference. They are apparently moving to a new place, which is good news because I think the location they're in now doesn't match up with the stylists/quality. BTW, I drove 40 minutes from Hollywood to get here and will be back when I need a touch up! read more

Janice is my lifesaver! A year ago I came to her to fix an ombre that went terribly wrong! She always manages to make time to see me and give me the look and color I have in mind. I booked an appointment to fix my hair crisis! My stylist (is that correct terminology?) was Megan - I recommend her highly. I showed her my hair and she said, "We definitely got to fix this!" Megan balanced out my hair for me and made it better than it was once before. My only quip is the price, but can't really argue if you come out of the salon with better looking hair afterward. Note: This salon's experience was new to me, so what you'll do is put your stuff down at the stylist's station, walk to the back to a small changing area and put on a smock. This smock is to prevent further clippings from falling inside your clothes - pretty unusual to me, but useful! (I didn't have any clippings afterward) Standard haircuts are $40-45, fyi. I saw Madison Avenue Salon while grabbing a jamba juice and the first thing that hit me was it was packed!!! not only with customers, but beautiful hair stylists. I casually walked in with no appointment and asked if someone had the time to cut my hair. To my pleasant surprise Robin Goring came to me and said sure ill help u out.. and with those words I was already getting a shampoo with a very nice head massage. Robin was very friendly, nice and awesome. The only thing that was better was her talent. She gave me an amazing haircut with a Red Stripe across. It came out perfectly. I was super stoked. She told me of all the things i needed to do to keep it in tip top, and she even styled it for me and took pictures for her album. Not only was Robin amazing at what she did, but she also had an amazing personality. I no longer go to any other stylist since I met her and I definitely recommend her to anyone who wants a fantastic hair cut, and a great experience. I made an appointment for my daughter with Char and I must say that she was wonderful. When I arrived, not only was I greeted by the receptionist, but I was greeted by 3 other staff members in which each of them offered either coffee, water or bagels. (it was 9 am). After being greeted, Char sat down next my daughter and asked what she wanted. Even though my daughter was only 10, Char treated her as an individual with importance. She explained the importance of having healthy hair and what the benefits were in cutting her ends. My daughter loved her and I loved how she was treated. I just moved to the area about a month ago and desperately needed a hair cut and I didn't want to drive to Burbank where my regular hair salon of 5yrs is just to get a quick trim. I decided to search on yelp to find the best hair salons in the neighborhood and Madison Avenue Salon popped up with almost everyone giving them a 5 star rating. I figured well what the heck, can't beat a five star rating so they must be pretty darn good! I called in and explained to them how I found them through yelp and read all the great reviews about them. I booked my appointment for the next day with Megan. When I asked over the phone how much it would be for the hair cut they quoted me $45 and they said if I wanted a hair cut and blow dry it would be $65. Wow are you kidding me a $20 difference just to get my hair dried? With a price jump like that I figured I can blow dry my own hair and keep my pockets warm with that extra $20 bucks. If it were a more high end salon in a more upscale neighborhood I would understand the steep pricing but they are located in a shopping center in Northridge, next to a starbucks and an Asian market. When I arrived I was impressed with how busy business was for them. I also loved loved loved how every stylist had amazing looking hair, it made me even more excited to get my done by them. I hate it when I walk into a salon and all the stylists' hair look like it should be falling out due to the amount of damage they've done to it. When I walked in, the front counter had about 4 of their employees sitting around chit-chatting away. I told them who my hair stylist was and Megan jumped up with a super friendly personality and started assisting me right away. I am a major clean freak so when she walked me to her chair I didn't like that fact that there was still hair all over the place from her previous client but nonetheless she swept it up quickly then showed me the back where I put my smock on and sat down to get my hair washed. We went back to her station, she asked what type of style I was going for, I told her that I was growing it back out so just a trim. I liked that she didn't try to persuade me into getting anything else. Megan proceeded to cut my hair and was fast, which I like. At one point she picked up a pair of shearing scissors with some other persons clunk of hair in it and didn't bother brushing it off before using it on my head. Like I said I am a clean freak and watching that light brown/blondish hair fall onto my lap that I know didn't belong to me grossed the 'F' outta me. I bit my lip and decided to keep my mouth shut the best I could, because so far I really like Megan's personality. Towards the end of my hair cut she started to blow dry the ends lightly, I'm assuming so she could see how my hair will fall when dried and to make sure her cuts were precise. I already knew at that point it would be difficult for her to tell since my hair is frizzy when just air dried, so partially dried it would come out the same 'frizzy'. After that she flipped my hair around several times as she was giving me different tips on how to manage and style my hair. She did mention that when I go to style my hair, if something didn't look right, I can come back in and she would fix it for me... Now that's great customer service! I went to the cash register to pay my bill, there was an older lady at the front desk that I found to be pretty abrupt. She told me that it was $45 total for my hair cut. In the middle of handing her my card, I asked if I could add my tip on it. She said, "no cash only", because my hair stylist was not renting a station from them. I offered to call my husband to bring me cash and she said. "no it's okay this time".The whole time she was telling me that it was okay she had an attitude about it, as if this was my fault. She even went as far as telling me that by charging Megan's tips on the CC it would make it look like income for the salon... what does that have to do with me? It sounds more like a personal problem, I'm just the customer right? They forget that they are the ones that assigned Megan to me. They should have told me when I called and made the appointment that my hair stylist is only allowed to accept cash tips. This way I would have come prepared. Then as I was leaving I could hear the older women asking Megan if she had blow dried my hair completely. She asked her 3 times the same question before I made it out the front door. I couldn't help but think to myself how strange that someone who knew I was a new customer and found them on yelp and made an appointment due to their excellent ratings, could be so rude. HELLO don't you know I am going to yelp about it, duh! All-in-all Megan's personality Rocked but she could work on the cleanliness of her station. As for the salon itself I would suggest 101 etiquette training for the women at the front desk... because she just cost you a potential long-term client. read more

I wish I could give it ZERO stars! Ladies BEWARE! IF YOU GO TO THIS SALON, DO NOT TAKE YOUR DESIGNER HANDBAG WITH YOU! My stylist was Shari. The first time I went to her she did a pretty good job on my cut and on my color. I was happy to have finally found someone that did not make my hair too dark which had been my problem with my previous stylist. She seemed nice enough but was full of gossip and off language. Also, I was not impressed with the salon at all. Neither were very clean but as I said, she did a good job with my color so I ignored the little things. The next time I returned with a picture of the cut I wanted and had her do a color/highlight touch up. The cut is HORRIBLE! Nothing at all like the picture. The color is fine. The problem is what happened while I was there. There is no place to set your purse down in the area where they wash out your color. I was not about to leave my purse in the front of the salon at her station. The assistant had me set it down on a ledge area. How does a hair salon not have safe and clean places for their clients to leave their purses? Who just leaves their purse unattended and walks away to the back of the salon? NOT ME! After my color was washed out, I went to get my purse and there was hair color splattered on it. I showed Shari immediately (she is one of the owners). She was rude about it and made it seem like it was my fault for setting my purse down where I had. Let me remind you her assistant told me where to put it, regardless, one of HER employees ruined my purse. The assistant did attempt to get the color out, it did not work. Shari thought I should see if my dry cleaner could fix it (she did not offer to pay for this). The dry cleaner could not fix it, and now my beautiful new Tory Burch purse is ruined. I called her multiple times with no response so I emailed her asking for the salon to reimburse me since one of their employees ruined my purse. Shari had her sister, also an owner, respond. Her sister basically told me to kiss off, it was my fault and they would not reimburse me for the purse. Hello, one of their employees got hair dye on it while I was a paying customer in their salon and they REFUSED to do anything to compensate me. Read the other Yelp reviews before you even consider going to this salon. The ones that are below 5 star read their complaints, they are valid! Honestly I wouldn't care if they are the best stylists out there (they are not) or if this was the most amazing salon (it is not) this salon is run/owned by completely ignorant and unprofessional people. Just to confirm how unprofessional and ignorant the owners of this salon are, here is her email response telling me in her poor grammar that it was MY FAULT one of her employees got hair color on my purse at her salon while I was having my hair washed: This is Char. I make the decisions on what goes on around here. I am well aware of your purse situation because I saw you chewing my sister out ... so I ran back the video and watched exactly what did happen. When you came in , Sheri put your purse with hers on a stool next to her station . She did that so that you did not have to put it on the floor or on her station top. ( Very nice of Sheri to care) Then when it was time to get your hair color washed off , you went over to the stool and picked up your bag and took it with you to the shampoo / color area and set it on a color tray, that stood in the corner . You did that. Not my employee. Then when your hair was done being washed , you picked it up and noticed that it had color on it. You then told my employee that there was color on your bag and he went and got a stain remover wipe to see if he could help remove the spot. He did not spill any color on your bag. So I don't appreciate you blaming him or anyone for that matter for the stain that you created. You put your bag on a COLOR tray . The same trays that Sheri and all of us use to apply color on all of our clients. You then chewed Sheri out for the color on your bag, which once again I do not appreciate! Who do you think you are. I went to Sheri, the owner, for a haircut. I have no problem paying a reasonable amount to have the job done right. The first time I went she cut my hair in ten minutes. It was a cute cut and I had no complaints. Second time I went was a waste of my freakin time! My friend had messed up my color and my hair was a flaming orange color. It was horrible. So I went to Shari, because I was told by someone that she could fix anything. I had already spent a lot of money so I asked her to please charge me reasonably. So she gave me a "deal" I went during my lunch. When I left work my coworkers said, "Good luck!" I came back three hours later and they all asked the same thing..."What happened?!" My hair looked exactly the same going in as it did coming out! All she did was place a few low lights that washed right out when her assistant washed my hair. Even the assistant looked puzzled when she looked at the results! She even went as far as to apologize and then explained to me that there was nothing she could do to fix it because Shari had the last word. Well, when Sheri came around to look at it she said how wonderful it looked, as if trying to convince me, and actually had the nerve to give me her card so I would refer my friends and fam to her. I looked at her assistant and she just gave me an apologetic smile. I was charged $180 for NOTHING! Whatever she did or attempted to do, didn't do anything and my hair still looked orange. I'm neeeeever going back and will never refer anyone to her ever! To top it off her manners are terrible. She wasn't cussing at me but every other word was a curse word. Geeze! Honestly, i love this place. I'm extremely picky with where i get my hair done. I used to go all the way to Hollywood and pay $100-$150 for just a cut. Kinda ridic, i know, but that's the truth haha. So once i kind of got tired of going so much out of my way, i asked around for the best local place. I made my way through a bunch of places all along Ventura which weren't bad but i just never found a stylist that i had a "connection", for lack of a better term, with. Madison Avenue is literally across the street from where i work. So i always knew it was here...it's just in kind of a random shopping center next to a Jamba Juice, haha. My best friend has been coming to Madison for as long as i can remember, and i've gone with her a few times, i just never actually thought of coming here myself. But finally, i gave it a try and just had a random girl named Amy do my hair. It turns out she's a regular where i work, haha. small world...kind of. But anyway, she was really young, cute, trendy, and looked like she could have been fresh out of beauty school, so immediately i was nervous. But she did an AMAZING job on my hair. I was so impressed! I have very fine hair, so it's really tricky to be able to do a cut that works with my face and my hair type. And it's even more tricky to find products that work in my hair without completely weighing it down, but she manages to do it all perfectly. My first time here was about 2 and a half years ago and i haven't gone anywhere else or to anyone else ever since. And the best part!?! $35 for a cut! And i think about $50 for a cut and blowdry. Haha, that's such a bargain for me! I usually opt out of getting it blowdried because i'm just picky with it and it's usually just a waste of $20. Although she has blowdried my hair before and made it look amazing. But still, i'd rather just do it myself at home for free. Anyway. I highly suggest this salon. It's cute, clean, and reasonable. This buisness and a whole bunch of other shops around this place have gone out of buisness. I went there today with my mom and the place was empty and deserted, nothing left. I had a business card from Megan from a long time ago when she cut my hair one time. Unfortunately, she didn't put the hours she works or the salon operating hours on her card. I called the number and left a message on the machine asking when Megan was available. They left a message on my home phone saying Megan works Friday after 3 and all day Sat. I called and again got the machine. I left a message saying I will take an appt Saturday any time after 1:45pm and please put their hours of operation on their outgoing message, because it was after 9am and it seemed to me that they would be open. Then someone left a message on my machine saying Megan usually works Mondays after 2 so if I wanted to make an appt to call back. What??? What happened to the other days they mentioned? Why do I have to go around in circles? It's too hard to make a $%^&* appointment! read more

I just got back from my appointment at Madison Avenue and Josh saved me! After a nightmare of a hair salon experience 8 weeks ago, I had to find a new salon and was reticent to go to Madison Avenue after reading some of the negative reviews on Yelp. Most of the reviews were 5-star so I thought I'd give it a go. I'm so glad I went! I'm happy to say that the five stars were right on point. I LOVE this salon. It's welcoming and cool. Walking in brings a sense of calm and gets you ready for a great experience. My savior, Josh did my color (1"of roots and he didn't blink an eye) and it's perfect. He even made sure I didn't have the "color residue" that so many stylists leave on your scalp. When he told me that his first time clients get a free style, I was overjoyed that my curly hair would be getting a blow out at no extra charge. But that's not why I'm going back to Josh in 6 weeks (roots roots roots!) it's because he's fantastic at doing color, charming and honest about what your hair needs. So happy to have found a hair salon I like and more importantly a stylist that I love. Thanks Josh, see you in 6 weeks! read more

I had a color correction done today without an appointment. I took the day off work to get my hair fixed as soon as possible because I was very disappointed with my results from another salon that was done the day before. I had asked for honey low lights that resulted in very blonde chunky looking highlights. This was the biggest complication that left my hair extremely unpleasant looking and too blonde. I decided to go elsewhere! When I walked into Madison Avenue Salon everyone seemed very friendly and helpful. I had showed the woman who greeted me my hair and how terrible I felt about it. She seemed to really care and understand my frustration. Even though she was busy she called her co- workers and asked them if they wanted to come in for a color correction, and Josh came to the rescue!!! Even though he had an appointment in the next 45 minutes, he took a good look and gave me suggestions that he recommend based on what I had originally wanted. Josh and the owner decided to work as a team and fit me in the schedule to color correct my hair. I am so thankful that they managed to fit me into their busy schedules without me having an appointment. This was a perfect example of teamwork! Josh finished up my hair and left it looking beautiful. We forgot to take a before picture however, I would rather forget that awful experience. My hair is now ready for fall thanks to Josh!! They had also offered me coffee which I think was a wonderful perk of the salon! read more

This review is based on my appointment I made back in March. I saw they had a yelp special and I was in great need of a cut and color. I was booked with Char and she immediately began assessing my hair when I first arrived. I told her what I wanted, and she actually suggested something else that ended up being waay cheaper and I ended up liking it much better. So I appreciate how they don't try to "sell" you unnecessary services. The whole experience was rather new to me...I'm used to being one-on-one with a stylist, but with Char, it was like she had a whole team and she was the "maestra" lol I don't know how else to put it. She had two "assistants" and when she started cutting my hair all the stylists surrounded us and watched. I've never had two people blow dry my hair either. That part I did find unnecessary, however, the blowdry/style being super expensive. Everyone was super nice, though. I had mentioned that I was graduating soon and am unemployed..and Char was nice enough to introduce me to another client in the salon that could know of job opportunities in the field (no luck though, boo). The atmosphere was really laid back and clean, not the most professional but it's better than being up-tight! I didn't care for the style but I loved the cut and highlights. I received the discount and I'm glad I did because it was pricey $165 (I'm a poor student!!) without tip. It doesn't matter though cause I love my hair. read more

I had a really good experience. I found this salon on Yelp. They had posted a promo of 50% off all salon services if you booked with certain stylists. I was lucky to have been given an appt with Taylor. She was awesome! She listened to what I wanted done and most importantly did it. I got my hair colored, partial highlights, a haircut & a blowdry. The bill was $200 and with discount I paid $100....wow, what a deal! Since I had never been to this salon, the promo totally lured me in. Lucky for me, Taylor was absolutely amazing. I will be bragging about her to everyone!!! read more
