This morning was their recital. The older kids did a ballet using the music and telling the story of the Wizard of Oz. The choreography was sensitive and obviously put together with a great deal of professionalism. Some of the older girls, in my humble opinion, seemed to have attained to a level of professionalism as well. I think that the recital, itself, provided a vision to the younger kids and their parents just to what level, they could attain, if they so chose. Of course, the choreography was appropriately suited for each age group. But I must admitted that my granddaughter stole the show.

Each spring, students work together and put on a big recital, for which parents have to stand in line to buy tickets. Costumes, production, the whole shebang. Rehearsals are daily the week prior to the program. Every other week of the school year, students attend a weekly class. The little ones take in the downstairs classrooms, accessed either through a back door (which they don't want anyone using when weather is cold, because it puts a chill on the downstairs studios), or through the painfully tight upper lobby and down a set of metal spiral stairs. When classes change, this is a truly hectic scene. I've started just dropping my 3 year old daughter in the lobby to walk herself down, because the stairs make me so nervous! In the changing area/restroom, something is always broken or out of order. The big dance area upstairs is a beautiful space, with plenty of room, great windows, and the tweens and teens seem to take their classes up there. The little girls are allowed to wear whatever leotard they like to classes, as long as they have appropriate dance shoes and purchase the tap shoes provided by the studio (they must all match for the show). Hair is to be up in a bun when possible, and not in a bow. When we came to join the studio in the fall, we may have caught the staff at a bad time. Miss Deborah, the dance teacher for the little ones, had just driven to Chicago and then lost her phone while she was up there. I never could get anyone on the phone from the actual studio, and have not been able to get much information from them via email. Your best bet is just to come into the studio between 4-5:30 one afternoon, to get information in person. It sounds from this review that it is a terrible place, but my daughter *adores* her hour-long ballet class, Miss Deborah, and the other little ballerinas. As long as she continues to enjoy it, we'll keep her enrolled. Maybe someday they'll expand, or get a bigger space. Until then, keep handing out the stickers, and we'll keep paying!

Not only do they provide training in Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Contemporary, Hip Hop, and Tumble, they provide character building too! This is a great place if you are looking for the all-around experience. My daughter LOVES that they are a Christian studio and even leads a bible study for her dance classmates outside the studio! As a parent, I appreciate the appropriateness of the costumes and dances. My daughter has grown exponentially in dance, confidence, and character, while "growing up here!" If someone had never seen the old version and went to it for the first time, they could easily grasp and follow the story. This new version does not make any sense. I mean really... replacing the Russian with peppermint sticks? Is this a Candyland theme? Sometimes change is not good when you are dealing with a classical ballet. As always, the orchestra was spectacular, as worthy lead dancers. However, I'm thinking Ballet Memphis Just doesn't have the talent it used to. So many of the dancers aren't even en pointe anymore! My 17 year old granddaughter has been attending the nutcracker since she was three years old, and says this 2025 is the last time she will ever attend unless the old version is brought back. It seems like everything has been cheapened, for lack of a better word. Even the costumes! The dancers' even lack emotion. I can't make it through the holidays without The Nutcracker and I really appreciate how they recorded the play and donated it to Memphis during the pandemic. I'm at the point where I know the dancers on sight and know their special gifts. I took a tour of the space before COVID-19 changed our lives. I love how you can see the dancers practicing from the street through the massive glass windows. They have dance school, community dance classes and a studio for pilates classes.
